The most common type of cancer in the United States, skin cancer, is also one of the most treatable if caught early.

As mid summer approaches, it isn’t only beach goers who are in danger of exposing themselves to harmful UV rays- golfers, runners, and anyone involved in outside activities are at risk. One in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of their lifetime, according to skincancer.org

The ABCD’s of detection are vital to self-examination and should be done as a regular routine.  The American Melanoma Foundation defines the ABCD’s as asymmetry, border irregularity, color variation and diameter. Watching out for these can alert you as to what changes or developments should prompt an examination by your doctor.

            Asymmetry: One half is different than the other half.

            Border irregularity: The edges are notched, uneven, or

            blurred.

            Color variation: The color is uneven. Shades of brown, tan,

            and black are present.

            Diameter: Diameter is greater than 6 millimeters.           

Other Warning Signs:
• The appearance of a new bump or nodule
• Color spreads into surrounding skin
• redness or swelling beyond the mole
• pain
• tenderness
• itching
• bleeding
• oozing
• scaly appearance

 At the Parker Center in Paramus, NJ, patients are given a careful history and physical examination if skin lesions are detected. “Early detection of skin cancers such as basal cell, squamous cell and malignant melanomas allows for curative surgical removal”,  says Dr. Paul M. We felt it was important to share this study with our Bergen County plastic surgery patients, as it shows people must take active and proactive steps to keep their face looking as young as possible.

This study specifically followed groups of twins that happen to share the same DNA, yet were exposed to different stressors such as divorce, antidepressant use and weight fluctuations.

The following is a snippet from the actual study results:

Results showed that twins who had been divorced appeared nearly 2 years older than their siblings who were married, single or even widowed. Antidepressant use was associated with a significantly older appearance and researchers also found that weight played a major factor too. In those sets of twins who were less than 40 years old, the heavier twin was perceived as being older, while in those groups over 40 years old, the heavier twin appeared younger.

According to Dr. Guyuron, “the presence of stress could be one of the common denominators in those twins who appeared older.” Additionally, researchers suspect that continued relaxation of the facial muscles due to antidepressant use, could account for sagging. And though they do not advocate gaining weight to look younger, researchers note that losing abnormal amounts of weight not only have harmful effects on a person’s health, but on their appearance, too.

And while technology now offers us the ability to fight aging through plastic surgery, it’s important to be proactive and keep life stressors to a minimum for those that truly want to look their best.

However, if the presence of stress is something non-negotiable in your life, it’s also important to take a variety of other steps to ensure your skin stays as elastic and young as possible. This would include drinking a full 6-8 ounces of water a day, taking plenty of vitamins and supplements, avoiding excessive sun exposure and stopping unhealthy habits such as smoking.

I am a 41 year old Breast Augmentation patient of Doctor Parker.  I want to share with you my journey that brought me to Dr. Parker at the Parker Center and the end result of his work.  I am speaking to you as if we are long time girlfriends and I am helping you decide for yourself if this is right for you.

My longing for “normal” breasts began in my early teens.  As we all know women’s breasts are different shapes, sizes and volume.  My problem was that one side was at least two (2) cup sizes smaller than the other.  Try to fill out a full B when you have an almost A on one side.  Plastic surgery was not an option for me at that time. Braces were considered a luxury item…imagine breast implants!!

As I grew and life gave me four (4) children (which I breast fed them all) I knew that it was time to actively search out the best plastic surgeon in New Jersey for me. I was terribly embarrassed with how my breasts looked.  It was so frustrating for me to find dresses or shirts that looked and fit good on me.  Also, I am in a bathing suit a good part of the summer; this particularly posed its own set of challenges as no matter how “wonderful” the top was, I just could not make it work for me.

I interviewed several surgeons and just didn’t feel that connection with them.  It was important to me to be treated holistically, not as a number.  A friend told me about Dr. Parker and I set up an appointment.  From the moment I walked in with my list of 27 questions, and I kid you not, there were 27 questions, Dr. Parker and his staff made me feel as if I was the only patient of the day.  By the way his office was quite busy.

My experience was comforting, informative and solidified my choice.  Dr. Parker was very patient and answered all my questions during my examination.  It was his soft spoken nature that eased my nervousness.  I must say, when you walk into Dr. Parker’s office, you feel a sense of calm and comfort there.

After taking a day to think about all the information I had before me, I called Dr. Parker’s office and told them I wanted to go ahead with my surgery.  It is quite impressive that they treat you before, during and after your surgery.  The steps they take prior to surgery truly made my recovery so fast; almost too fast!

The end result of my surgery was amazing.  I love my new breasts!  My self-confidence has been raised ten fold.  I cried when I was able to put on clothes that before I would have never even considered.  I went bathing suit shopping and could not believe my eyes.  I am ever so grateful to Dr. Parker and his staff for taking such good care of me from start to finish.

There are a few things I would like to share with you that will really help in the process before and after.  There will be a time when you are fitted for your new breasts.  PLEASE LISTEN TO THE STAFF and go a bit larger than what you think looks good.  I was very reserved with my size and still feel great about my choice; however I probably would have gone up one size more.  What you do is put on a special bra and tuck an actual implant in it.  It was my experience that you look bigger that way as opposed to how you look after your surgery.

Once you have your surgery, there are feelings and sensations you experience that you may not be fully aware of.  For me it took a good few days to get used to the idea that something foreign was in my body.  Then the crackling noises began as well as the squishing.  It is all normal. One such patient that experienced uncertainty about breast augmentation was Diane.  She was actually referred to our office by 3 different people who had their breasts operated on by Dr. Parker and experienced phenomenal results.

She too wanted to have her breasts enlarged, but “wasn’t quite ready” when she came to see Dr. Parker in 2007.

Women across America are reporting that cosmetic surgery gives them the “boost of confidence” necessary to reach higher levels in the workforce – even amidst mass layoffs and corporate downsizing.

The following snippet explains some of the findings from the study:

In a new telephone survey compiled by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) of 756 women between the ages of 18 and 64, many reveal cosmetic plastic surgery procedures now appear to be an important rung on the success ladder.

•    13 percent (more than 1 out of 10 of the 115-million working-age women) say they would consider having a cosmetic medical procedure specifically to make them more confident and more competitive in the job market.

•    An astounding 3 percent (nearly 3.5-million working women) say they’ve already had a cosmetic procedure to increase their perceived value in the workplace.

•    73 percent (almost three out of four or, 84-million working women) believe, particularly in these challenging economic times, appearance and youthful looks play a part in getting hired, getting a promotion, or getting new clients.

•    80 percent (four out of five or 92-million working women) think having cosmetic medical procedures can boost a person’s confidence.

Parker.  Crediting ‘natural’ results to state of the art techniques and surgical judgment, Dr. Parker reveals in the following article what every potential eyelid surgery patient must know to avoid a case of plastic surgery gone-bad.

New Jersey eyelid surgery (or Blepharoplasty) is an extremely popular cosmetic procedure to firm up and smooth out lines, wrinkles and folds in the eyelid area.

Men and women alike have been known to embrace the procedure, as wrinkled or puffy eyelids can cause a person to look unnecessarily old, tired, sad or angry.  Yet the real challenge for any prospective eyelid surgery patient is finding a doctor that will help them look ‘natural,’ as opposed to ‘operated on’.

And while most people believe that a fake, wide-eyed look is a natural consequence of eyelid surgery, our renowned New Jersey plastic surgeon, Dr. Paul M. Parker explains how updated techniques and skill in this particular area of surgery can make a tremendous difference in achieving natural-looking results.

“With any aesthetic surgery we strive for an “unoperated” look- but with eyes it is essential to err on the side of conservatism.  The eye is a finite structure where millimeters matter,” says Parker.

To avoid this “operated look “It is important to estimate just the right amount of skin, muscle and fat that needs to remain in performing an upper eyelid and lower eyelid Blepharoplasty.  In performing an upper lid Blepharoplasty, I take out an appropriate amount of skin, a small portion of underlying muscle and fat from the inner aspect of the eyelid to debulk the heaviness of the upper lid and simulate youth”. In performing a lower lid Blepharoplasty, I remove the “herniated fat” causing the puffy appearance of the lid, tighten the laxity of the lid margin itself with a lateral canthopexy, elevate and suspend the underlying obicularis oculi muscle and remove a conservative amount of skin.”

In addition to examining the eyelids, Dr. Parker will also evaluate the position of the patient’s eyebrows as well as any wrinkling they may have between the eyebrows or on the forehead during the patient’s initial consultation. He will also discuss options to rejuvenate these as well, including the injection of Botox or surgical solutions to these areas. Surgical solutions include a brow lift or modified brow lift procedure to be done simultaneously with eyelid surgery based on the individual patient’s anatomy and desires.

Finally, in order to achieve natural-looking results with Blepharoplasty surgery, Dr. Parker stresses the importance of conducting a thorough pre-operative analysis of the eyelids and the areas around them. He will then carefully discuss the various surgical and non-surgical options with the patient to work out a detailed treatment plan.

“To make sure everyone is on the same page, I personally find it helpful to supplement these consultations by having the patient spend time with our professional photographer and computer imager to review ‘imaged’ pictures of what we believe the patient will look like after surgery, in addition to actual before and after pictures of prior Blepharoplasty patients,” notes Dr. Parker.

And not surprisingly, the procedure has grown equally popular nationwide– as recent statistics from the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery show that American men underwent 20,280 male breast reduction procedures in 2007, thus making it the 4th popular procedure available for this particular demographic.

Additionally, statistics from the UK now show a 44% increase in male breast reductions between 2007 and 2008, as the procedure has received a tremendous amount of media attention following commentary on former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s enlarged male breasts.

But as the numbers seem to indicate, male breast reduction procedures (New Jersey statistics included) are here to stay.  And for good reason—as the procedure has done more in the area of reducing insecurities and embarrassment that accompany gynecomastia (or enlarged male breasts) than any other procedure to date.

In terms of surgery,  male breast reduction is actually quite straightforward as performed at the Parker Center for Plasitic Surgery.  The patient will first be given general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, so they are perfectly comfortable and do not experience any pain.  Following that, Dr. Parker will make a small incision at the base of the areola and remove the unwanted  fat and glandular tissue in the breast with ultrasonic liposuction.

This process of removing fat and tissue takes approximately one to two hours, depending on the amount of breast tissue to be removed.  Dr. Parker then closes the tiny, un-noticeable incisions with dissolvable stitches. The patient usually awakens rapidly from surgery at the Parker Center and leaves the facility within one hour.

Postoperatively, a male breast reduction patient experiences little pain.  They will need to wear a snug-fitting compression vest for 1 to 3 weeks. The patient may shower the day after surgery, perform light activites, drive and return  to work when they feel comfortable, usually within a week after surgery. They may begin exercise within 7-10 days.

Considering the straightforward nature of gynecomastia surgery, the quick and painless recovery as well as the natural appearance of the breasts afterwards, it’s no wonder why men increasingly  are opting to have the condition surgically reversed, rather than suffer from the embarrassment and distress that often comes from markedly enlarged breasts.

According to the results of the study, breast augmentation, liposuction and eyelid surgery ranked among the top 3 plastic surgery procedures performed last year, with over 10 million surgical and nonsurgical procedures preformed across the country for 2008.

And while the study also reports a 12 percent decrease in cosmetic surgery procedures between 2007 and 2008, our practice actually experienced a 5 percent increase during this exact same time frame!

One of the newest tools on the market is called Isolaz.  Isolaz is an IPL machine with four heads to choose from depending upon the condition I am treating.  The head of the machine is a vacuum system. None of the other laser machines have anything like this. It grabs skin and doesn’t permit the light to get out so it stays very concentrated in that area. It’s beyond good. There is no damage and you just work in the area you want. The laser uses different strengths of light…low, medium and high.  Blue and green for acne, purple light (blue green red) for sun damage and broken capillaries, and red (the hottest part) for hair removal.  I have seen incredible results, especially for acne. I was actually chatting with Liz about how nerve wracking it must be for patients at other cosmetic surgery practices that have to cut out pictures, bring them in and hope that the doctor’s plan for their face or body matched the post-op image they had in their head.

My interest in becoming an aesthetician was born out of my own personal battle with acne. My earliest recollection of skin problems started in 6th grade when I felt like I was treating one pimple for an entire year. All through high school and college I could never depend upon my skin to stay clear for any important events. Pat:

Right around the time I decided to go ahead and schedule surgery there was a news story about someone dying during elective surgery. That didn’t discourage me, but reinforced my commitment to really do my homework. I used the Internet extensively and checked physician’s licenses, how long they had been in practice, their background, residency program, training, board certification, and facility accreditation. My recovery was a pleasant surprise. Before I even left the recovery room, I could already see a big difference in my thighs. I had surgery on a Tuesday and was back at work the next Monday. The little bit of soreness and bruising from the lipo was manageable and my eyes were swollen for a few days, but within a week, even that was minimal. My biggest fear was the pain, and I cannot even explain how painless the whole thing was. Everyone associated with Dr. Parker’s practice made me comfortable at all times—physically and emotionally. My main concern was the recovery. I was expecting a lot of pain. I’m a hairdresser and use my arms a lot for styling and cutting hair. I took off 5 days including the surgery day and was back at work with no problem. The biggest surprise I had was the outcome. I’m petite and was nervous that I would wake up with these big round things. But I look so natural and they feel so real. It sounds corny, but I am even standing up straighter. I wear whatever I want. No more padded bras!
