Who owns the statuses? Who controls the pictures on your facebook account? Better yet, who controls this post? According to Facebook, they do.

Who owns the statuses? Who controls the pictures on your facebook account? Better yet, who controls this post? According to Facebook, they do. Facebook, in the latest turn of the fuzzy concept of “ownership” and “licenses” on a social networking site, made everybody give a collective “huh?” Now we’re all trying to figure out — who controls what, exactly?

It’s not uncommon for sites offering hosting for user-generated content to reserve some rights to use the material for promotional considerations. Our host (our lovely, great and gracious hosts), WordPress, has the same deal in their TOS. For material you put up on their servers, you expect it. But, when we want that licensing right to cease we do the obvious thing — delete that shit.

This isn’t a big deal for us, getting used, in fact we’re excited when we get linked to, our stuff gets quoted (with the proper attribution), or people leave us a comment. Honestly, we get 2 hits day and we love when people humor us like they care. We’ve even had spam bots lift our posts to generate traffic to their sites, but they linked here so we were okay with it. Use us, abuse us, please.

We still like having the security that once we delete our stuff our gracious hosts can’t use it anymore. The illusion of control is better than nothing. Now Facebook decided to challenge our little illusion, and we’re a little bit confused.

In the new Facebook TOS, they hold on to their licenses even once you removed the content. Even if you close your account. To make us even more confused, they reserve licensing rights for sites that post a Facebook share link (like our share this button at the bottom, you know, in case you wanted to help us out). According to Facebook, once we ask for some shameless self-promotion, they can do whatever they want.

In some twisted way, everyone likes to think their content outranks and outwits their contemporaries. Your editors harbor delusions that our stuff is somewhat funny and insightful. It’s a survival mechanism. If we didn’t, we’d stop writing (like we did for the past 2-3 weeks, but that was due to laziness). On the same token, we like to say who can use our stuff and to what capacity. We’re a bit territorial, and we seriously doubt they’ll ever use any of our content, so why even include the clause? Even if we never invoke our right, we still like having it around. It’s the same idea as owning an assault rifle, SUV, or a sports car – you’re compensating for something, so you need to remind yourself that you still got it.

We’re squarely in the “what the hell is Facebook trying to pull?” category. We do appreciate the idea that, seemingly overnight, Facebook has moved from potential scourge of humanity with to many spammy apps to an epic battleground between artists and Corporate America. Now we have something else to direct our ironies towards.

Editor’s Note: Apparently we here at Partially Bigoted Zealots have more influence then we give ourselves credit for (and trust us, we give ourselves a lot of credit), because as of…sometime after this was posted, they responded with this notification on the Facebook Home Page.

“Over the past few days, we have received a lot of feedback about the new terms we posted two weeks ago. Because of this response, we have decided to return to our previous Terms of Use while we resolve the issues that people have raised. For more information, visit the Facebook Blog.

If you want to share your thoughts on what should be in the new terms, check out our group Facebook Bill of Rights and Responsibilities.”

We’ll keep you updated on the latest of these mind-numbingly gripping events! Stay tuned to Partial Bigots!

Your editor’s have often contemplated converting from our Protestant version of Christianity to Catholicism. The main selling point? Saturday night service. Anything to sleep in on a Sunday. We were told by our Catholic Mother (who converted in our teen years, causing a Mini-Holy War in our house…we’re part Irish, you can imagine the kitchen terrorism that followed) that this wouldn’t “fly” in Catechism. Their loss, we still date their woman. However, a recent Vatican declaration may have us seriously considering the switch again. The Vatican, taking a page from it’s Galileo maneuver, decided to bury the hatchet with Charles Darwin.

The Vatican decided that the whole evolution thing had some oomph behind it. In fact, somehow, those crazy Catholics think you can espouse Darwinism and still be a good Christian. Pssh, what?

Organisers of a papal-backed conference next month marking the 150th anniversary of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species said that at first it had even been proposed to ban Intelligent Design from the event, as “poor theology and poor science”. Intelligent Design would be discussed at the fringes of the conference at the Pontifical Gregorian University, but merely as a “cultural phenomenon”, rather than a scientific or theological issue, organisers said.

Saturday service? Check. Support of evolution and working to stop hating science? Check. Can someone confirm if that reason will hold up in Catechism?

Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, the Catholic pointman on cultural issues, admits the Church hasn’t always played nice with Darwinism, and they kinda feel bad about it. However, now the Church is all about the apes-to-human chart we all grew to love on the Bill Nye intro. The announcement, timed to coincide with the Darwin’s birthday (Happy Birthday! We really don’t want you to burn in hell!), will send some shockwaves through the scientific and religious communities.

Hell, the Vatican even believes that some of the Darwin’s idea can be traced back to some of the work by St. Thomas Aquinas. A Saint. One almost wonders if the two communities might become fast friends (ignoring the fact most people had already come terms with this, maybe the fringe elements might be happy) and set aside their differences and sing kumbaya. That people will finally embrace the idea that science illustrates the mass complexity and awesomeness that God created, instead of undermining it. Or that religion doesn’t hate reason or logic, but embraces and celebrates as sign of the brilliance of God? Or, more than likely, we’ll just hate the Catholics.

A Disquiet Follows My Soul. Battlestar Galactica rocks.

So I’m a little late on the ball, I apologize. But still, what better time to write and read a review about what is arguably the best show on television then right now? Probably two days ago when I could clearly remember the episode. Spoilers. Duh.

Sean’s take: “A Disquiet Follows My Soul”, the second episode in Battlestar Galactica, takes a different path then the intensely epic premiere. Following the revelation that Earth is a frakked up, nuked-to-all-hell planet, the future of the fleet is looking grim. Almost every main character has taken a turn for the worse. The President has gone AWOL, the Vice President is a raging separatist. Admiral Adama doesn’t give a shit. The humans and Cylon are discussing the possibility of an alliance. You see Chief Tyrol standing up for the Cylons, while Tigh sticks to his XO guns. Gaeta takes the biggest shift.

The once bright-eyed tactical officer on board Galactica, has taken a complete 180. The loss of his leg was just the start, and with the current “alliance” with the Cylons, he’s turned bitter. It’s a Gaeta that I don’t like to see. Now that Dee is gone, who will be that bright eyed young officer? But it’s a good twist for the character. Bitchy Gaeta doesn’t hold back. In the only Starbuck scene, he baits her and threatens her, egging her on. When she leaves in a typical Starbuck huff, we’re led to believe Gaeta wants to talk mutiny with the rest of the crew.

The tone for this episode is drastically different to the season premiere. While in the premiere, so many questions were answered and so many characters changed (okay…all of them), this focuses more on the Politics and Bureaucracy of the fleet. We’re still dealing with the fallout, but unlike the Sometimes A Great Notion we don’t see this as a tragedy. Now, the fleet has accepted their fate and given up. Lee (now just a Quorum delegate), again, seems to be the only one trying to hold the fleet together but with Zarek in full blown cylon hating mode it’s for naught; the Quorum easily buys into the fear leaving Lee on the wrong side of a political argument.

From the possibility of the human/Cylon alliance comes what is essentially racial tension. Yes, it’s always been there, just look at the occupation on New Caprica, but the alliance brings it to a new level. Under the alliance, the Cylons want to be considered part of the fleet. Given the same rights, the same protection, in exchange for Cylon FTL technology. Of course, most of the fleet would consider killing the Cylons a better option. Zarek leads the fleet in a anti-cylon frenzy. The “racial” issue will surely be one that is developed more over this season, and the Gaeta-Zarek alliance of the bitches will add an interesting aspect to the show. The New Caprica arc dealt with the effects of an occupation and terrorist versus freedom fighter debate; this new racial tension will focus more on the after effects of war and how all the dehumanization of your enemy stands as a barrier to normalizing relationships.

Also of note, this was Ron D. Moore’s directorial debut. He didn’t knock your socks off with his directing (though he does have a foot fetish) but does an adequate job. The episode does have a “first time director” vibe, but not of a young film student who just grabbed a camera. If Moore continues developing his directing skills, he’ll certainly be a formidable director. For now, the shots are little predictable, set-ups you can see coming and the visual symbolizes is a bit heavy-handed. However, his writing skills and the acting chops of the cast make this moot. Kevin Smith once opined that Galatica only needs someone to yell “action” and “cut”. This episode shows us why, but also makes us appreciate what the damn good directors do on the show.

CNN is a bunch of tools -- wait, what? Why is nobody yelling? What is this? A decent show? GO AWAY INTELLIGENT CONVERSATION!

Color us confused, perplexed and astonished. After flipping through the channels the remote ineveitably landed on CNN. Expecting a audio and visual barrage of superflous graphics and a stately, urgent music bed we’re met with no music, no graphics. Just 4 guys partaking in an intelligent discussion on Afghanistan. In 5 minutes, no mass generalization or completely obvious statement has been uttered. It’s a really intelligent discussion. No one is raising their voice, waving their hands wildly and no inane comments. What is this doing on CNN? On cable in general? What the hell is this doing on TV? I feel like I’m watching C-SPAN, but with better production values.

We’re watching Fareed Zakaria GPS, a lame name that cries for overproduced graphics and soundtrack. Granted, we’ve only seen 5 minutes (not including the end bit, were reader-suggested famous quotes were played), but does CNN still have some integrity left? HOLY SHIT! They just recommend a book? To read? And learn? About society? What the hell is going on? Is this Bizaro CNN? Make it stop — WE CAN’T TAKE THIS!

Oh thank god, the overproduced and melodramatic “Special Investigations” is on now. The world returns to normal.

It was a historic moment. Moving people across generations and races, and now, you too can own a piece of history. It wouldn’t be a real historic moment without some swag you could take home to prove that it actually happened, and you paid attention long enough to pull out your credit card. Is there a better way to remember this moment? A moment that defines a generation and breaks a new barrier in race relations. Let us answer: no, how could you remember without your special CNN headline t-shirt? It’s impossible. If there is anything to love about America it has to be our swag. Nothing is sacred until we immortalize it on a t-shirt or a button. So where can you find the best inaugural swag? On the internet of course.

What better way to express your approval of your country then a virtual board you can use for the Bananagram Facebook application? That’s right — Facebook. You can use the Presidential table while simultaneously showcasing your approving Facebook status (that you updated via Twitter). Hot damn, tell the entire world how historic Obama’s inauguration was!

CNN Headline T-Shirts

Let’s face it, if you followed our liveblog yesterday, CNN is the most prestigous name in journalism. When talking about professionalism, you naturally think of CNN. So, how can you combine your two loves: CNN and Inaugural awesomeness? The CNN Headline T-shirt. For about 15 bucks, you’ll never forget CNN’s coverage and Obama’s history making day.

Some Jerk’s CafePress

In an unprecedented move of synergy, it looks like CafePress, The Rolling Stone and Rock The Vote are all about the swag. The Obama Inauguration store is up and taking your orders. They got buttons, tote bags, a free hat (if you spend $50!) and even stationery. This, honestly, is the place to go if you’re feeling lost without any inaugural memories. What better way to express your excitement then writing a birthday card without Obama’s face on the front?

The Inaugural DVD

The best swag, obviously, is available at the official inaugural site. Including this $30 CD/DVD set that includes tracks by Maroon 5, Death Cab for Cutie, Common and Stevie Wonder. Yep, when you thought there was no way to combine their musical stylings (or need to) in an single album — Obama has done it. That’s how inspiring this man will be — he can make the mixtape from hell possible. The CD/DVD set also includes some of Obama’s moving campaign trail speeches. Don’t forget to check out the other swag at the official store — including wine glasses and more tote bags!

Get your Inaugural swag now America! If you don’t it’s like this never happened, and no one will believe when you said you watched it on TV.

Apparently, a black guy did something awesome.

11:16 — Here comes Hillary! Wolf Blitzer mentions that some people were hoping she’d be sworn in. Haha, PUMA’s don’t hurt yourself!

11:18 — CNN, “In 92, Clinton raised between 50-60 million dollars to become President. This inauguration cost more than that.” Thanks CNN, probably the most useful thing you’ve said all day, and it still sucks.

11:29 — Silence fell over the crowd. Oh, and go figure, they’re running behind schedule. Are we surprised? No. This is America, for crying out loud.

11:40 — So the “W” stands for Walker? Well damn, I thought it was like the “S” in Harry Truman. Is Anderson Cooper choking up as he tells us that this is the last time “Hail for the Chief” will be played for Bush?

11:43 — Obama’s got his baller look on, he’s a player.

11:45 — “George Walker Bush,” “William Jefferson Clinton,” and “Barack H. Obama”. What are you trying to say, Mr. Announcer? He’s not a terrorist? (Thanks to Bryan over at GeekSpeak for the joke)

11:46 — At least CNN has stopped talking now. The only tool left is the announcer.

11:48 — Invocate this! Wow, he even rhymes. Clever.

11:50 — For a gay hater, he has great rhythm. (Yep, we went there.)

11:51 — Bryan: That combover right there? That’s the Lord’s combover. (We’re gonna give him contributor status soon.)

11:52 — The Partial Bigots go to Church, we swear.

11:54 — I really didn’t want to go to hell today, dammit. The First Lady of Soul (That’s right, there’s THREE first lady’s today, bitch!) has what could be the most ridiculous hat I’ve ever seen. Maybe. And that was a scary note she just hit.

11:56 — 11:54 — General consensus? This bow on her head is ridiculous. Awesome, but when Joan Rivers does her Inauguration Fashion Grading, she’s gonna fail.

11:58 – Joseph Robinette Biden is officially the 47th Vice President of the United States of America. And I think we can all agree he has the coolest…maybe queerest…middle name yet.

12:00 — GEEK ALERT! John Williams composed this! Bring on the lightsabers! WHAT THE HELL??? WOLF WHY ARE YOU TALKING????

Major musical geekdom up in here. Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Anthony McGill and Gabriela Montero performing a John Williams composed piece. Our music major brother would probably cry. Not even kidding. Oh, and for all those not aware, seeing how it’s noon, Obama is now the President of the United States. I prefer POTUS. Go black guy!

12:05 — What are you trying to say John G. Roberts? That he’s a terrorist? Huh? Oh yeah? Well what’s YOUR middle name? George? LAME. YOU’RE WHITE MOTHER FUCKER.

Obama and Roberts probably should’ve ran through that swearing in thing a few times before going live.

Steve Watts, another GeekSpeak guy, has this: “YOU PRESIDENT THIS COUNTRY, OBAMA. YOU PRESIDENT IT SO HARD!”

12:09 — So finally, we can say “President Obama” with no douchebag saying “Elect!” right after us. Find another schtick, tool.

12:13 — And here comes the part when he asks us to work to make America better. Please, I already have a blog, what more can I do?

12:22 — He’s talking about the need for work and sacrifice, and I’m sitting here in my bathrobe.

Sean’s Speech take:

12:08 — Obama chant, followed by several dignified, dramatic pauses. Thanks the now Former President Bush. Dignified, go figure. What else.
12:09 — “But because we *dignified pause* the people *dramatic pause*…” Oh he is good.
12:10 — Way to hit every economic issue on the head in under one minute.
12:10:45 — Ovation.
12:11 — Strong wording about bonding and togetherness. Bring the people together. Quoting scripture, always good.
12:11:45 — Ovation in regards to Obama saying “We all are free” without a dramatic pause.
12:12 — Our journey is hard, we understand. Oh, CNN, did you have to have a close up on Spielberg when he said that? Yes, we know he has more money then all of us, don’t remind us.
12:13 — Great usage of slavery related phrases. Makes all Americans feel as one. He is one slick President.
12:14:00 — Ovation.
12:14 — Quick mention of Energy and the Environment. “All this we can do, all this we will do.”
12:15 — He’s hitting every major issue on the head, it’s only been 7 minutes! Cure world hunger! Come on, do it! Do it! I know you can!
12:16 — I guess I’m okay with you saying we’ll spend more consciously instead. I guess the market is a pretty major issue.
12:17 — “Our founding fathers”, unity language. This speech is filled with it.
12:17:38 — Oh, totally mentioned the fact that his father was born in a small village. Baller. Look at him now.
12:18 — “We are ready to lead once more” and “We are friends of all nations”. Repairing our image so soon?
12:18:51 — Mention of withdrawing responsibly from Iraq and working on Afghanistan.
12:19:24 — Ovation, because we will not apologize for our way of life.
12:20 — Unity language for everyone. Worldly unity. Religious unity. Unity everywhere! Unity!
12:21:01 — Don’t be on the wrong side of history, bitch. That’s pretty much what Obama just said.
12:21 — Hey world hunger! Hey, he just said we must change the way we consume the worlds resources! We should help them? He’s fixed everything! It’s only been 13 minutes!
12:22:37 — Katrina reference.
12:22:42 — Hurting economy reference.
12:22:48 — 9/11 reference.
12:22:53 — Family reference.
12:23 — As Americans, we have duties to be responsible.
12:24 — “Men, women and children of every race and faith…”, once again, this speech is centered on unity.
12:24:41 — He just reminded us that he is black.
12:25 — Anecdotal reference about the Revolution and our nation’s freedom and unity.
12:26 — Wow, he’s really good. He’s really really good.
12:26:24 — “God Bless the United States of America”.

12:29 — It must suck to be this Poet, you have to follow Barry and perform an art form that only 10% of Americans care about.

CNN is a bunch of tools, even when nobody is speaking. No name-key for the poet, and cut to shots of people on the mall leaving. Tools.

12:31 — My girlfriend is going crazy listening to the way this woman speaks. “It reminds me of the way Microsoft Sam would speak”.

12:37 — “Black won’t be told to get back. Brown can stick around. Yellow can be mellow. The Red man can get ahead, man. And white can do what’s right.” That was probably the coolest thing ever, especially coming from that guy. Awesome.

12:38 — Our national anthem really, really, really sucks.

12:40 — Oh, here comes CNN, and Anderson and Wolf rope in the their Token Black correspondents.

12:44 — I’m not going to lie, as soon as CNN starts talking, I stop paying attention. Oh were you at the inauguration of Nelson Mandela? Were you really John King? Well this is NOT THE SAME. Yes they’re both black, but that’s IT.

12:48 — Obama is walking Bush to the helicopter, that will escort him off into retirement. Facebook statuses everywhere rejoice.

12:52 — And Wolf makes another pass at the Obama girls. Someone needs to talk to him.

12:53 — Why do we care about Michelle Obama’s outfit? Because she is the first lady. And the first lady, being a woman, has to set a good fashion example for the entire nation. Bitch.

12:54 — And Bush is now officially “quarantined” on the helicopter. Facebook statuses are reupdated to reaffirm their happiness.

CNN just spent 45 seconds on how Obama gets the helicopter, no mention of Jill Biden’s hooker boots.

12:55 — And suddenly we forget who Former President George W. Bush even was.

So what did we learn? CNN is a bunch of tools and we’ll stick to network news from now on.

Some black guy is doing something of relative importance today. We're partial towards it. We also are partial to pretending we can liveblog.

I flipped on the TV today and tuned into CNN, no real reason for it. I had just gotten back from class and buying books (a week after classes started), and so what else would I have to do? I’ll pretend to be involved in society and the world by being up-to-date on various events. That’s my excuse at least, sometimes I just watch CNN, other times MSNBC. Sometimes I watch CSPAN and even CSPAN 2. Yes, I do enjoy it, okay?

Anyway, so delicious smoothie in one hand, Public Relations book in another, computer at my side, my eyes glaze over as I tune in only to the flashing box of moving images and soaring sounds. Today is a very important day in American history. Apparently some black guy is doing something of relative importance. So much so that all the news channels are covering it. Pretty much all day too. What the hell did I miss out on? I wasn’t asleep for that long!

Regardless, upon learning this information, I contacted my cohort, my partner in crime, and my brother. He was unaware of this as well. I was disappointed in him, he should know better. Either way, after some quick bantering, we both decided to try and “liveblog that bitch”. So that’s what we’re going to do. Or at least try to. We’ll see how it goes.

9:56 — I haven’t even had my coffee yet and all CNN is going on about is that the Obamas and Bush’s are having coffee. Cruel CNN, cruel. Oh, it maybe brandy. No one is sure, but apparently this part is a big deal. This is where all the secrets are handed over. (“We have a secret 24/7 pastry chef.”)

(It should be noted that if one of the secrets is not about the Stargate Program or Atlantis or anything related to obnoxious Science Fiction, I will be pissed.)

10:05 — CNN just showed a shot of empty spaces around the Washington Monument, we’ve already abandoned him, you’re on your own Barry! Also, we just spotted a Brazillian flag, the foreigners are already invading. The Obama Presidency is already a fail!

10:09 — Wolf Blitzer just pointed out Muhammad Ali. He sings like a butterfly, stings like a bee. “He’s always going to be a champ.”…Yes Wolf Blitzer, you did sound like a tool.

10:10 — CNN remarks about how Obama is the “President of the People”. Drew says: “I thought we just elected him President for minorities…”

10:15 — CNN keeps mentioning this “coffee” and pointing out the VIPs who get the awesome seats. Anderson Cooper is really pissed that Dustin Hoffman gets the good seats and he’s stuck in the studio. CNN also points out how big of a tool Reagan actually was.

10:18 — Here come the Supreme Court justices, best subplot of the next 8 years: Which one will die first? My money is on JP.

(Steven Spielberg is there! I want my 8 bucks back for War of the Worlds!)

10:28 — That announcer made saying “Majority Whip” and “Minority Whip” probably the coolest thing ever. Barney Frank however, kills the mood. President Bush will be leaving the White House in about 8 minutes time. This was a pointless update.

10:43 — “NO ONE TALK OVER THE OBAMA IMAGES!” Wolf Blitzer, tool.

10:44 — Is Jill Biden wearing hooker boots?

10:48 — Brief discussion about Dick Cheney and Joe Biden. Dick Cheney is wheeled out in a wheel chair. Is it bad that I couldn’t help but laugh? Probably a little. President Bush and President-Elect Obama just got into the car. CNN is talking about how cool it is that the new car has little LED lights that illuminate the little flags. How cute. “The Car version of Air Force One”. Someone just said that it “has some James Bond-ish features”. CNN. TOOL. 5 inch armour, 8 inch thick doors. Run flat tires, bullet proof glass windows. Jet engines, missiles and mini-guns. A little red button.

10:54 — So, our first black President gets a Cadillac limousine. Good lord, someone is gonna beat that into the ground, but it sure as hell won’t be us (for once).

11:04 — There’s a black guy on Capital Hill! CNN remarks on how the color black, especially in regards to cars and Washington has recently been related to funerals, death, and sadness, but this black car (and guy) has such a different feel. A feel of joy and change. CNN seriously has the worst journalists ever.

11:09 — CNN is moved, because Obama is BLACK, and originally we only counted black people as 3/5th of a person.

Our Mother: “Well he’s only half-black, so let’s do the math.” (After some mental math, Mom determines he’s 4/5 of a person. America: still keeping a brother down.)

11:13 — CNN, once again you have official cemented your place as some of the most gigantic tools in journalism. Why?

They ordered a satellite shot so we can see what this looks like from space?!?! Probably like, uh, NOTHING. ‘Cause it’s SPACE and 2 million people on the ground won’t be seen.

Yes, I know you like to do something groundbreaking and original. But you tend to always fail. CNN = Fail.

11:14 — We’re moving to a new post to stop the paragraph killing, so go there.

What the frak just happened? We’re not sure what’s gonna happen next — or what the frak to say. We’ll try anyway. After the jump, Drew’s spoiler-heavy review. Sean’s take will come later. For the love of the Gods — don’t look if you haven’t watched it yet. Thanks to the awesome folks as the GalacticaBBS for taking really awesome screen grabs, like the above.

Drew’s Take: Talk about dire. A comment told to me earlier, completely encapsulates Sometimes A Great Notion: “This show is just sad. It’s always been dark, but now we’re at entirely different level.” We don’t open up with a big bang, get all the answers, or see the plot bound forward instead we witness the fallout. We’re used to our heroes struggling on despite every setback; for one simple goal: Earth. With that motivation gone — their entire worldview — what’s left? Ratcheting back and letting us watch the demise of the crew is horribly perverse. The episode is damning. Laura Roslin has serious doubts about her faith and her role; Dee struggles to see a purpose in a post-Earth life and kills herself; Adama goes into a drunken rage blaming himself for all the people he’s sent to die for apparently nothing; and Starbuck just has her life totally frakked up. Nobody gets back off the mat.

Only Lee, to an extent, manages to keep his head in the game. But even Lee admits he’s at a loss on what to do. He’s standing up because someone has too, and no one else seems interested. The writer’s (smartly) decide that Lee bumbling for words in front of the Quorum isn’t worth showing — all we see is the doubt behind the scenes. The only reason we know he’s the only one with his head on straight is the fact he’s the only one sober. When the Other Adama gets back on his feet, he’s still drunk as he walks into the CIC. His courageous speech, mirroring his Earth promise in the miniseries, lacks his normal confidence. It’s angry, distraught, and tired. There really is no recovering from a blow like this, at least not any time soon.

The character moments in the episode are complemented with what seems like a barrage of the new information opening up new questions. The 13th Tribe were Cylons, Starbuck finding her crashed viper and body, and Ellen Tigh as the Fifth Cylon. Really, we were only told 3 bits of information that most people surmised over the long hiatus. Still, watching the on-screen confirmation unfold, you’re stunned. Before you know it, Dee’s killing herself and you have no time to digest anything. This episode is like a jujitsu move — taking the momentum from the previous 4.5 seasons and sending us a whole new path.

I really don’t know what to say about Starbuck except: Holy Frak. When she finds her charred Viper and body, and Leoben runs away — the most mystic, psychobabble spewing Cylon in the show runs the other way — it takes the show to a new disgusting angle. Burning her own body is the twisted cousin of the “One Year Later” jump; we’re not turning back from this.

I think it’s too early to pass judgment on Ellen being the Fifth Cylon. It will depend on what happens in later episodes. This does add a whole new wrinkle to Tigh’s arc. Considering it was just in the closing moments we learn the secret there isn’t much to go on. I will say, that this episode, as stellar as it is, was hurt due to the long hiatus. It’s been admitted by Ronald D. Moore, and evident in how the episode unfolds, that episode was not built as a reintroduction. Revelations and Sometimes A Great Notion need to be seen back-to-back. Sometimes A Great Notion will hold up well, and probably even better, when watched at the intended pacing. This episode is one of the strongest of the series and a great reminder to the universe we’re coming back too.
