The weirdest and most fantastic car number plates captured on Malaysian roads

According to TheStar on 9 November 2009, the most expensive number plate in the country is for a vehicle registered in Terengganu but owned by a businessman in Johor Bahru. The number TAN 1 went for a pricely sum of RM200,090.

So, there you go TAN 1 spotted on the road!!

Baby born on AirAsia flight

A baby boy arrived unexpectedly on board an AirAsia flight

Gave birth above 2,000 feet

Flight AK5606 was on its way to Kuching but had to be re-routed to the low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) in Sepang, 30 minutes after the aircraft left Bayan Lepas Airport in Penang.

Liew Siaw Hsia, a 31-year-old waitress from Taiping, took the flight last night when she was just 27 weeks pregnant, a week shy of the recommended travel ban for pregnant mothers.

When she boarded the flight, she said that there was already some discomfort. But 20 minutes into the journey, she started feeling contractions.

Edd Razhe, the personal assistant to the AirAsia chairman, said when the pilot was informed of the emergency, he contacted the control tower requesting a diversion to the LCCT.

"When I started feeling a lot of pain, I was still too nervous to ask for assistance. It was when I couldn't take it anymore that I asked the passenger beside me for help," said Liew.

She said that the flight attendants tried to calm her down and to hold on from giving birth, but the pain was too unbearable.

"They immediately asked the other passengers sitting around me to move elsewhere, and asked for a doctor on the PA system," she said.

On the flight was Dr Ronald Tang, another passenger, who quickly volunteered his services to the nervous mother while the cabin crew held her hand throughout the entire ordeal.

The healthy baby was safely delivered in mid-air. He became the first born in an AirAsia aircraft.

As soon as the aircraft landed, a waiting ambulance and paramedics whisked the baby and mother to the Putrajaya Hospital.

Edd said although it was an emergency, situation in the aircraft was normal and under control.

AirAsia director of operations Moses Devanayagam visited the mother and child yesterday to congratulate them.

"I would like to congratulate Liew and wish her all the best of luck.

"Delivering a baby at 2,000 feet is indeed a very rare experience, and certainly she will cherish the moment forever," he said.

AirAsia chief Datuk Tony Fernandes, who is in Bangkok flown back to Kuala Lumpur to celebrate the arrival of the baby at the hospital.

AirAsia has announced that it will provide a lifetime of free flights to both Liew and her son to all (AirAsia) destinations.

Britain's favourite departmental store Debenhams is set to open a 20,000 sq ft store in Kuala Lumpur next year

By mid-April 2010, Debenhams will occupy 3 levels in Lot 10, a major upmarket mall in shopping district Bukit Bintang.

The new store at Lot 10 will bring in a number of first-in-Malaysia ranges such as the highly anticipated Principles by Ben de Lisi; Butterfly by Matthew Williamson for women; and labels carried by London Fashion Week designer Henry Holland.

Future LRT and MRT in KL

Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (SPNB), the state-owned public transport operator, plans to spend up to RM7 billion to extend 2 light rail transit (LRT) lines in Kuala Lumpur.

The 2 extension lines will cover a total of 34.7km and is due to start early 2010 and fully completed by end of 2012.

In line with the extension of LRT lines, SPNB will also embark on fleet expansion.

It was also reported that the Kota Damansara - Cheras Line will begin construction as early as 2011 and completing in 2014.

1. KELANA JAYA LINE EXTENSION (formerly PUTRA)

Current average daily passenger volume is 180,000.
The preferred alignment will begin from the Kelana Jaya station,
passing through 13 new stations,

including an interchange with Subang Jaya KTM commuter station,
before ending at Putra Heights interchange with Ampang/Sri Petaling Line
covering a total of 17km.

Fleet expansion: 35 more train sets of 4 cars per set configuration.

2. AMPANG/SERI PETALING LINE EXTENSION (formerly STAR)

Current average daily passenger volume is 170,000.
The preferred alignment will begin from the Sri Petaling station,
passing through 13 new stations,

covering a total of 17.7km.

Fleet expansion: 13 more train sets of 6 cars per set configuration.

3. KOTA DAMANSARA - CHERAS NEW MRT LINE

The proposed new LRT line from Kota Damansara to Cheras, measuring 42km, will be upgraded to a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system because of high population density.
A possible extension from Kota Damansara to Sungai Buloh KTM.

The proposed alignment showed the new line running from Kota Damansara along Persiaran Surian to the Damansara-Puchong Expressway and then heading towards the city centre along the Sprint Expressway, through Bangsar Baru and Jalan Bangsar.

It will then run parallel to the existing Kelana Jaya Line to Nu Sentral in KL Sentral, then Pasar Seni and Masjid Jamek before heading to the Golden Triangle along Jalan Raja Chulan.

The route will then pass Pasar Rakyat in Bukit Bintang and then Jalan Tun Razak where it will join Jalan Cheras.

It will continue along the road and the Cheras-Kajang Expressway to the Balakong interchange near Cheras Batu 11.

There will be around 30 stations along the line, including a few interchange stations. Below is an indication of the proposed alignment:

Ion Orchard vs Orchard Central

I was sooo freaking busy lately... but anyway I was in Singapore chillin out at Ion Orchard and Orchard Central over the Merdeka weekend.

Ion Orchard is like Singapore's response to KL's Pavilion. Very nice facade but the interior is simply too small, low ceiling, cramped and congested, especially the food court during office hours.

The Louis Vuitton there is amongst the best retail store I've ever seen. It is also the largest LV boutique in Southeast Asia.

Orchard Central has a hippie decor but the mall is still quite vacant. The outdoor escalator overlooking Orchard skyline is quite cool.

I was quite disappointed with the stores in Orchard Central especially the small small ones that look like stores in pasar malam, except these ones selling expensive goods. The 10 floors just failed to excite my shopping/dining, for that I would choose Ion Orchard.

By 2012, we will welcome yet another lifestyle-themed "Megamall". This time it is in the KL Sentral locality.

Nu Sentral will consist of a new 7-storey shopping mall and an adjoining 27-storey office tower, located adjacent to the KL Sentral transportation hub and along Jalan Tun Sambanthan.

Nu Sentral is part of a multi-billion "Lot G" integrated development that will also include another 2 office towers and a boutique hotel standing beside the mall.

The mall will be linked to Stesen Sentral, a nearby monorail station, nearby office towers and the proposed integrated station for a new Mass Rapid Transit line linking Kota Damansara and Cheras.

Nu Sentral will also be Kuala Lumpur's first "green" shopping mall by adopting internationally recognised building standards as well as implementing environmental-friendly and energy saving features.

Natural daylight will be brought in by a series of "skylight boxes" randomly placed at the roof of the atrium.

Above the 7-storey mall, there will be a 2-acre sky park, a megaplex (cinemas) and leisure space for cafes, open air events and concerts.

The "rooftop" entertainment concept will surely be the talk of the town when it opens.

Nu Sentral is destined to be a new shopping paradise in Kuala Lumpur, with plans already underway for many more shopping malls around the city centre such as the large-sized mall nicknamed as "Vision City Forest in the Mall".

(I don't know but KL seems to be competing with Singapore and Bangkok when it comes to shopping malls?)

Theme park to be built in Mutiara Damansara

Malaysia’s first and Southeast Asia's third KidZania indoor theme park will open in a "yet again new mall" in Mutiara Damansara in 2012

It has been confirmed that the developer of Mutiara Damansara, Boustead Holdings and Khazanah Nasional Bhd will be bringing the increasingly popular Kidzania international indoor theme park to Malaysia.

The indoor theme park will be housed in a RM80 million spanking new 7-storey mall, to be called Curve NX, also to be developed by Khazanah and Boustead. The location of the new mall is believed to be next to McDonald's drive-thru, opposite IKEA and near Tesco hypermarket.

"Kidzania Kuala Lumpur" will be a family entertainment centre, typically comprising a child-sized replica of a real city. The city is managed by children and has buildings, shops, streets and vehicles. The park is to allow children to learn about the adult world by actually engaging themselves in various professions within the 'city'. *Sounds cool?

The theme park was first created by theme park innovator, Luis Javier Laresgoiti and is the idea of Mexican businessman Xavier Lopez Ancona.

There are now an increasing number of Kidzania parks around the world, including in Mexico City, Monterrey, Tokyo, Jakarta while others are being planned for Dubai, Bangkok, Lisbon, Barcelona, Santiago and Seoul.

Last year, Khazanah Nasional roped in Danish toymaker to open its first Legoland theme park in the southern Malaysian state of Johor, neighbouring Singapore.

Japanese discount chain Daiso and British departmental store Debenhams were recent major openings in Mutiara Damansara. Major local corporations such as Nestle Malaysia, Dialog Group, TSR Bina, UAC, Batu Kawan and Mudajaya will soon move their offices to Mutiara Damansara and a new 5-star hotel will be built next to the Cineleisure complex.

Edison Chen visits KL next week

Canadian-born Hong Kong celebrity Edison Chen will be in Kuala Lumpur June 19-20.

To my surprise, Edison will be in KL to open his 2nd boutique Juice in Bangsar.

The "highly anticipated" opening ceremony will take place on June 20th at 3pm, where the boutique brand owners Edison Chen, Kevin Poon and special guest Sam Lee will join Juice KL local partner Edwin Choong to usher in prosperity with a traditional Chinese lion dance performance.

The goods will be available for purchase after 5pm, where the general public will be allowed into the store. After that, the celebrations will continue with an afterparty at Zouk Club KL.

Edison, whose showbiz career was destroyed following a sex scandal with several Hong Kong female celebrities, will be focusing on his fashion business.

The luxury hotel brand Raffles will have its first hotel in Malaysia - The Raffles Kuala Lumpur - which is expected to open its doors in 2011.

The Raffles Kuala Lumpur will be at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, along Jalan Bukit Bintang. Featuring 200 rooms and suites, each with a minimum of 50 sq m (about 538 sq ft), it will offer the most spacious hotel in the city.

Raffles Hotels & Resorts' signed an agreement on May 28 with Harmoni Perkasa Sdn Bhd. Harmoni Perkasa is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Urusharta Cermerlang Sdn Bhd.

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur is 51 per cent owned by Urusharta and 49 per cent by the Qatar Investment Authority.

"The name Raffles is associated with exceptional standards of service, hospitality and cuisine. We look forward to working with Raffles Hotels and Resorts to bring a luxurious lifestyle experience to Kuala Lumpur," said Harmoni Perkasa chairman Tan Sri Zainol Mahmood.

Owned by Fairmont Raffles Hotel International (FRHI), Raffles Hotels & Resorts is expected to expand from seven Raffles hotels now to 23 hotels worldwide by 2012.

When opened, the Raffles hotel will compliment the luxurious Pavilion mall.

Raffles is now the rate leader in seven out of the eight markets it is in. In Dubai, the rate leader is the Burj Al Arab in Dubai. In Singapore, Raffles last year closed at an average room rate (ARR) of S$1,000 (RM2,420) per night.

FRHI executive vice-president David Roberts expects the KL hotel to have an ARR that is a fifth higher than the leader at that time.

Currently, the rate leader in the capital is Mandarin Oriental at over RM600 per night.

The "6-star" Pavilion KL Residences were completed recently.

Meanwhile, Chris Cahill, COO of FRHI said the group had always wanted to extend the Raffles portfolio to Kuala Lumpur.

"Now we have an ideal strategic partner and an unrivalled location."

The group also owns Fairmont and Swissotel brands of hotels and resorts.

Raffles Hotels & Resorts' public relations and communications manager Vivian Koh said Raffles Kuala Lumpur will offer six restaurants and bars including a specialty restaurant, an all-day dining restaurant, a lobby lounge, a lobby bar, a pool bar and a Cafe Stelle located at the Couture Pavilion precinct.

A True Chicken Story

Do you know Malaysia has one of the highest chicken comsumption per capita in the world?

My first internal audit fieldtrip to a chicken company came as a surprise to me. I was not expecting to count chicks/chicken in this first job of mine and also in the first month of work as an audit assistant.

So in the early morning of March 18, I travelled to a semi-rural town of Sitiawan (and Lumut), on the west coast of Perak state. I visited my client's feedmill, a broiler farm and a processing facility. Next time I would love to visit their breeder farms (mother hens) and hatcheries.

Here's what happened:

Visiting the feedmill allows me to understand what matters most in producing good quality chickens.

Chickens nowadays eat better than myself, their feed comprised of 20+ ingredients formulated by and cooked under computerised systems, rather than putting some stuffs in the wok and frying them manually in the kitchen.

This is the final product known as chicken feed, which was cooked above 80C. It has all the ingredients, vitamins, organic growth hormones and antibiotics, exactly what's required by teens like me too.

Bear in mind, chicken food has salt as well for their taste buds.

I don't really know what is this but it's definitely one of the "good" ingredients to make the chicken feed, or perhaps something like our herbal soup but for the chickens?

The so-called kitchen for chickens is obviously much more complicated than our usual kitchen at home. The machines here are superior than our Panasonic microwave ovens.

When the chicken food is cooked, it can be stored in gigantic tupperwares known as feed silos.

And that's the end of the feedmill visit.

The following morning, I visited the broiler farm.

This is perhaps the largest broiler farm the company has. The company produced more than a million chicken every 42 days in all its 16 broiler farms combined (and not 60 farms).

This farm has about 15 chicken houses, just like those longhouses inhabited by humans you see in Sarawak, Borneo.

Each house is taken care of by one master, either from Indonesia or Nepal or Bangladesh.

WOW...WOW...

20 days old chicks

"I've never seen sooo many chickens in my life," I cried as the chickens were busy chirping about their good food.

All of sudden, a small-sized fellow fell off the gap in between the platform floor and died almost immediately.

Poor thing.

(The purpose of the gap is to allow chicken excrements or shit to drop to the ground, then collected for other purposes. As such the chickens don't play with their shit if it would to lay on a flat surface.)

As the air temperature outside the house rises, the house curtains will be closed automatically.

With good ventilation (fan turbines at the side) etc, the temperature in the house is always kept 7C cooler than the outside to prevent overheating and dehydration amongst the young chicks.

My colleagues and I also spent some time hanging out with the chicken farmers, wait, it's now called chicken supervisors.

This was the truck transporting the chicken feed from the feedmill to the farm. Its role is the same as the restaurant waitress.

Next stop is the chicken processing plant. Photos are not allowed inside but I managed to take quite a number of shots. (ok maybe I got less integrity)

After 42 days of birth and growing up with good food, these chickens are harvested and slaughtered by we humans.

It's really a sad sad ending.

In Malaysia, all chickens are slaughtered in Islamic halal way. After going through many worldwide standard procedures, there are 3 main things done to "cleanse" the chickens.

What I didn't know before this was the chickens were hanged upside down and left to bleed after slaughtering, as they travelled in a "monorail ride". Most of the chicken blood must flow out from the body as blood is an agent for pathogens.

Incidentally, I also saw Jesus Christ's cross in the main chamber at the so-called chicken mortuary.

Here the chickens are chilled to low temperature to maintain its freshness.

The machines are sophisticated enough to drill and screw up the chickens to remove their internal organs and genitals.

Imagine thousands of male and female chickens are raped like this everyday.

After going through 20+ steps and some hygienic procedures, the chickens are ready to be packed as a whole bird or put into trays for further processing, normally the "tearing" stage.

I witnessed myself the whole bird being tear apart by machines to yield your favourite KFC drumsticks, wings and breast meat.

My main concern is whether all the chickens produced daily can be sold immediately.

In bad economic times like now, the answer is no. Then the chickens will be stored in refrigerators as big as my entire house at -18C... and kept there till Tesco buys them.

A word of advice to housewives out there is that those Tesco chickens are still very fresh indeed. Don't worry! (I can't say the same for chickens at Giant and Carrefour)

Lastly, guess what happened to the chicken heads after slaugthering?

I know the answer is scary.
