On Stage Dance Studio

On Stage Dance Studio is the top dance studio in Stratford, Ontario. They are vibrant, fun, and love to perform for their city. Their previous website struggled to keep up with the growing demands of a growing studio, and so I was hired to bring the groove from the dance floor to the web. Once a content strategy had been developed, a fresh website with bold photography and beautiful type was created, highlighting not only what happens in the studio, but also what happens in the community.

The site was built on WordPress so the staff at On Stage Dance could update the site themselves. With new features like online photo-editing, custom post types, and a beautiful new dashboard, WordPress was the perfect solution for this project.

The site has been designed using CSS media queries, which help the site look at home in either a desktop or mobile browsing experience.

To promote the Corona Beach Getaway contest, Grooveshark partnered with Corona to build DJ to Getaway by Corona Light, a platform for creating party playlists that allowed guests to add songs to via text or Twitter.

My role in the project was two fold: to design the user interface and develop the front-end for the platform. Approaching the project with progressive enhancement, the site takes advantage of the increasingly powerful capabilities of newer web browsers, while still providing a usable and even enjoyable experience for users of older browsers.

Patrick Rhone, creator of MinimalMac.com, released his first book “Keeping It Straight” in the Spring of 2011. To promote his book, I designed a simple but elegant site that matched his signature style and showcased the reviews his book had received from other respected writers.

In 2010 Hello Kelly recorded their new album, (EASYFORYOUTOSAY). Once the album was finished, the search for a record label to distribute the album began. I designed and developed an electronic press kit for the band to send to labels, distributors, managers and booking agents. The EPK was incredibly successful, and the new album is due out this summer.

Fraser Speirs is a mobile education consultant who works with schools and technology companies to enhance their approach to 21st century skills, teaching and technology provision. In 2010, Fraser lead Cedars School of Excellence to be the first school in the world to roll out the Apple iPad on a 1:1 basis. As a result, schools and educators from all over the world seek Fraser’s expertise in both consulting and speaking roles.

In the spring of 2011 Fraser asked me to develop a cohesive brand identity for his consulting work, which resulted in a new logo design along with a whole new website marketing his offerings as a mobile education consultant.

On March 11, 2011 a massive 8.9/9.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Pacific Ocean near Northeastern Japan. In response to the struggles facing the people of Japan, we’ve created this project as a way to raise awareness and funding for the relief effort.

For this project I partnered with Mike Precious to pull together a community-driven project to create a letterpress poster. Taking the beautiful design work Mike created, I coded the front and back-end for the site. The poster is now on sale, with proceeds going directly to the Japanese Red Cross.

Grooveshark and Pepsi MAX partnered up to put on a party at SXSW 2011, and wanted an interactive way for their guests to pick the playlist. Working alongside John Ashenden of Grooveshark and Daniel Aminzade of djtxt, I designed and helped build a web app that allowed guests to tweet or text their vote for the next song in the rotation.

Church Theme

After the success of the Rugged BandThemer theme, Adam Pickering came back to me to have a layout with three different design styles created for his new venture, ChurchThemer.com.

Once I designed a layout for both the home page and interior pages, I set to designing three distinct styles for the theme: Minimal, Grunge, and Glossy. Because of the thought and strategy that went into the design of the layout, Adam and ChurchThemer.com was then able to apply even more styles to provide further aesthetic options for their potential customers.

When UpThemes approached me to design a new premium WordPress theme, I wanted to find a niche that was being under serviced. Having had several charities approach me in the last year for WordPress work, and knowing the financial constraints these charities were facing, I knew that creating a beautiful, functional and effective WordPress theme for charities was the right thing to do.

I was helped in the project by the wonderful people at UpThemes, especially Chris Wallace who provided design direction throughout the project. I also met with Richard Dew, whose marketing experience at an international charity helped me understand the needs of charities, and to utilize the lessons they had learned when researching how charity websites can be effective. Built on that experience, as well as my own experience designing for charities and with the WordPress platform, I designed a website that lets charities take control of their web presence, and helps them effectively reach those they wish will partner with them on their journeys.

Tim Latham approached me to redesign his WordPress site which at the time was, as Tim put it, “an embarrassment.”

I first developed a layout that placed more emphasis on highlighting the impressive client list Tim has accumulated, that presented his educational materials that will soon be available for purchase, and to continue building his blog. Tim wanted a clean layout with a slight grunge feel, which was accomplished through the use of blending photography and textures.
