This was the most recent project I was a part of here with the team at 1st Playable. We wrapped things up on this one not to long ago, and its cool to hear about the kids online getting excited about it. It was a demanding project, but the end result is something we are all proud of. I think the kids out there are really going to enjoy it :)

Right after school got out, I entered my thesis in a couple of film festivals, and I heard back from another one! It's the 7th annual Takoma Park Film Fest. I hope I can go down, it's in the DC area. It would be cool to meet up with friends down there.

Here's a new illustration, it's involved with the Sad Earth thing... This is his sidekick!

Also, here's a random experiment I tried today (its a self portrait). I've seen some really cool stuff in this style and I'd like to practice and get good at it. I like to think of it as a graphic design-animation hybrid type of art. Anyway, I'm going to try to keep doing this type of thing.

It's supposed to represent the various types of art that are a part of the community in Sarasota (They came up with the concept, and wanted symbols of some kind on a palate)

I've been trying to limit the amount of material on my thesis character that gets out there, but here's a little something to show you how Ardy's looking these days:

As you can see, the textures are looking pretty nasty, especially that displacement on the body, but don't worry, he'll get there!

Lip Sync

We've been working on this Lip Sync project for a while now, and we turned it in about a week ago. But I wasn't that happy with mine, so I went back and did a lot of new work on it. The first one I turned in looked pretty bad, but I think I can at least show this one without being embarassed. Here's a link to the new and improved version:

Man, I cannot stand this book. If you google Tom Bancroft, you will find some good art, but none of it is in this book. This stuff is so unappealing. In reading it, I felt like most of the designs had really even proportion, and were all basically the same. I mean, look at the cover. That kid's eyes, nose and mouth are all the same size and are evenly spaced. Also, is head, hands and feet are exactly the same size. And I really hate those Mega-Man type feet where it just starts from the knee and spreads out with no ankle...
I AM NOT TRYING TO BASH TOM BANCROFT! The man can draw... he has a cool blog too... but I just CAN'T stand this book. The thing that really irritates me is that this book was REQUIRED for one of my classes. I took one look at it and said no thanks. There are some people at my school that absolutely love this book. They can't get enough of it... I don't get it guys... Here's where I like to go to look at really well designed characters:

Hello all! There's been some pretty cool discussion lately on the school forums about some recent "animated" movies. Most recently: Monster House character design. I've been putting my 2 cents in on the forum, but some really cool stuff came up and I figured it was blog-worthy.

The character designs in Monster House are uninteresting and unappealing. They are very bland and that comes from generic, even proportion. I've seen a lot of this in my short time as an animation student, but they are basically normal human proportions with slightly enlarged heads, hands and eyes; plus all the facial features are the same size and are evenly placed on the head.

Another hot topic was appeal. A lot of people have said that the characters in Happy Feet had appeal, but I completely disagree with that. Many artists confuse appeal with cuteness. CUTENESS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH APPEAL! Appeal really just means anything that a person likes to look at, but it also includes pleasing, simple design. (This stuff is in "The Illusion of Life," by the way) The photorealism and over-complexity of the Happy Feet penguins are appeal-killers. When I think of appeal, I think of thoughtfully designed characters with interesting body shapes. Really shapey stuff like Yogi Bear, Mr. Incredible, Looney Tunes, or Monsters Inc. That stuff has simple, shape-based design, and would be a lot of fun to animate.

In prepro, we had to do "beat boards" which are basically rough comps of 5 or 6 important story moments. This is my story. Basically, these two characters bump into each other and do the thing where you both step in the same direction and can't get by each other. The tall character is having a lot of fun, but the little guy gets really mad and smacks him...
