Today’s topic: Nunc Coepi (“Now I begin.”)

In this short podcast, I describe the spiritual principle of Nunc Coepi, a Latin phrase that translates as “Now I begin.” This is especially meaningful as we live through Lent. It addresses our need for courage and perseverance as we face difficulties, trials, or failures.

Also, on a personal note, I relate some of my recent health issues that led to an unexpected hiatus from the podcast, as it relates to this topic. It is a joy to be back!

The care and feeding of your soul comes from a life of prayer that is coupled with sanctifying grace found in the sacraments, chief among them—the Eucharist. This episode’s focus on prayer comes from my conversation with author and blogger, and longtime friend, Barb Szyszkiewicz, who brings us a new book, The Handy Little Guide: PRAYER.

I recommend Barb’s book not only for yourself, but as a gift for others. It’s short and an economical purchase, too. It’s the latest in The Handy Little Guide Series from Our Sunday Visitor.

In our saint segment on the podcast, we power up with inspiration, wisdom and advice and drawn from several saints on the how-and-why’s about prayer. (Plus, you’ll find many prayer-related podcasts in the notes for episode 259 that I hope you’ll investigate if you have time.)

Ramping up for the feast of the Sacred Heart on June 11, in this latest episode of Among Women, we’re diving deep into devotion of the Sacred Heart with author and speaker, Emily Jaminet. Her latest book is called Secrets of the Sacred Heart: Twelve Ways to Claim Jesus’ Promises in You Life and it is absolutely red hot wisdom on the subject. You’ll also learn about enthroning the Sacred Heart in your home or elsewhere. One of my favorite stories that Emily tells is about a lonely woman whose experience of isolation during the pandemic was transformed by this devotion. Oh, there’s so much more! I also give a short read from the book on the life of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque whom Jesus used mightily to bring this devotion, eventually, to the world.

I’m happy to share the latest episode of Among Women.

In the past year, I’ve been trying to avoid burnout. The coronavirus pandemic has brought scheduling challenges and changes that have required me to take a harder look at discerning how I spend my time. What am I saying “yes” to —in terms of my use of time? Keeping my calendar in front of Jesus, and keeping a daily prayer time, and keeping Sundays holy—and as a day of joy—have been life-saving. Trusting Jesus with my calendar is key, whether its job related stress, or what I’m cooking in the kitchen this week. That’s why I’m talking to Rachel Balducci, author of Overcommitted: Cut Chaos and Find Balance. Our identity is not about what we do, but who we are in Christ. Rachel’s message calls us to greater holiness first, and doing what God wants us to do.

I also share about a Franciscan founder of two religious orders in the U.S. and Germany, Blessed Frances Scherviers. Frances was a woman who used her time well, helping to invite troubled women into a life with Christ.

Listen to Among Women 256 at my AW website OR hear this episode on iTunes or on the iHeart Radio App.

:::

On a personal note: About midway into the podcast you’ll hear me share that I may be posting less frequently in the coming weeks. That has already started if you’ve been looking for me. But as I’ve shared on the podcast before, this is a one-woman apostolate and when things get crazy around here, it does impact my posting schedule. I’m currently assisting in my elderly mother’s care and I do need some space to do that. The message of today’s podcast of giving your schedule or calendar over to Jesus is really relevant here for me. I’m asking him for graces every day to be serving where he needs me most. Please know that I do miss you, and I thank you for your prayers for my family in the meanwhile.

Hello and happy new year!

As we open 2021, I feel led to a back-to-basics approach with Among Women, and I’ll be doing an “espresso shot” series throughout the coming months on Mary’s titles and her feast days. (And yes, I know this is the Year of St.

Joseph… so I’ll be adding that aspect along the way as I can!)

Here’s the first short-and-sweet one on Mary, the Mother of God!

Between the espresso shots (the shorter version of AW) and my regular length podcasts, we’ve passed 300 episode in all. Recently I’ve been asked about what’s next for Among Women… and with the ongoing pandemic, and my normal workload, all I can say is that I’m just going to be keeping on as steady as I can in 2021. I’m praying for discernment regarding sharing Among Women in other ways, and I’d ask you to join in that prayer of petition.

In the meanwhile, thanks for listening to Among Women and I wish you the peace of Christ and the joy of Mary in the new year!

I have no deep wisdom to share as we wrap up 2020. Other than this: we are already in the new year and we ought to embrace it… it started on the First Sunday of Advent and right now we’re getting ready for the Christmas season. And that means awakening to the goodness that we are really do have a Savior who loves us so much that he took on human flesh, to show us how to live. (I offer a few more thoughts about the coming of Christmas on this recent episode of Among Women.)

There’s no denying the angst and heartaches of this past year, but there’s no denying God’s grace either. So in that spirit, I wish you joy amidst it all. You are in my prayers.

May you find Jesus in new ways, and may you see him especially the tender faces you see in person, or on Zoom or FaceTime, or when you meet him and receive him at the altar.

May our Lord fill every empty cup, and may HE be the source of our fellowship in the days and years to come…that we might also joyfully fill one another’s cup. Amen.

Merry Christmas!!

I don’t know about you, but life seems to have sped up on me. As I review my schedule I know it is related to my increased workload at my job, and my increased home responsibilities amidst the enduring months of this pandemic. Yet, as we come to the final week of Advent, my schedule seems to be slowing down, and that’s a real blessing.

In recent weeks, I’ve been able to release two podcasts for Among Women. The first one is dedicated to caregivers and I hope if you are a caregiver, you’ll appreciate the resources offered there. Listen by clicking here: AW 254: Thanksgiving for Caregivers

The second one just came out this past week and offers a little perspective as we approach Christmas, plus offers a delightful new book for children, I’m A Saint in the Making. Plus I do something I’ve never done before, I read aloud an essay from Charles Dickens, “What Christmas Is As We Grow Older.” Something about that essay just tugged at my heart as we’ve all faced many losses with the pandemic, the most important being the death of loved ones, and an increasing awareness of our own mortality balanced against the hope of heaven. It’s a bittersweet read, but a reconciling one, too. Listen to the whole podcast by clicking here: AW 255: A Saint in the Making

Podcasting is a joy for me, but it has been a time struggle with my increased pandemic-related stressors in recent months. That said, the temptation is strong to “add more” to the current slow down, and I’m resisting it. I’m finding the need to rest and recharge needs to part of this season’s “Christmas list.”

That said, I’m committed to preparing and recording Among Women, and I’m going to be kicking off the new year by doing a monthly Espresso-shot series on Mary — her important feast days and titles. And since we’ve just learned that we are in the Year of St. Joseph, I’m sure I’ll be adding some new notes about him as we talk about Mary. Plus, I’m looking forward to a new guest line up starting in January.

So, I’m resting…. that’s good for my creativity and allows me to plan what’s coming next with care. And I hope you have some down time for rest and recreation, too, in the coming days. And I hope Among Women will be a part of your time.

If there’s a topic you’d like to hear me cover of Among Women when it comes to Mary, or some other interest you might have, let me know. I’m still the only one who answers the emails at amongwomenpodcast@me.com or the Facebook messages when they come in!

Thanks for listening, and a special thanks to those of you who subscribe!
