Ever wonder why one EMR vendor charges $10+K and takes 1 year to implement a Lab-to-EMR interface and another EMR vendor charges $3K and takes 3 months? You aren’t alone. This is a common question in our industry. With that said, everyone acknowledges the benefits of interfacing. As mentioned in a previous post, pathology groups are eager to service the needs of their referring physicians. Many times, though, it comes down to…yes, you guessed…TIME and MONEY.
So, what are some alternatives to Lab-to-EMR interfaces? Here is a quick list…
1. Secure on-line access to lab reports- this service can be made available almost immediately in lieu of a results only interface or simultaneously while the interface is being built. In some cases, if the EMR can support, uploading the lab[...]

In the practice of medicine, at the beginning and end of each day there is a patient and a waiting family. Behind every code, every number, vial, slide, policy, and case there is a life. Lives are quite literally on the line, with people doing their job well at every level.
Cost is always at the top of referring physicians’ list when adopting an EMR solution, and there is no shortage of pricing and package options in the EMR market.
EMR adoption continues to rise, and connectivity or interfacing those systems falls next in line on the list of priorities for referring physicians. So when your practice is counting the costs, don’t overlook the price of interfacing. Costs passed on to your referring lab or labs can quickly add up. Many of today’s LIS’s (laboratory information systems) are well equipped to handle the HL-7 or version of messages, but the EMR vendor holds the key.
EMR companies charge for every interface, and this price doesn’t generally include development. Ask your vendor how much and how quickly they’re committing[...]

If you were to poll pathology labs and ask what the most important factor in competing for referring physicians’ cases, you would get a multitude of answers. Some of the most common we hear are connectivity (ability to interface with physician EMR), lab/pathologist reputation, marketable/usable lab reports, etc; but the one factor that we hear the most is SERVICE.
One of our clients is a great example of service being a competitive advantage. Since its inception, NephroPath has incorporated same day resulting into its service level. So, all results (including Electron Microscopy) are provided on the same day the biopsy is received. This investment in service better equips NephroPath’s referring physicians to provide the most effective patient care possible. In turn, NephroPath’s case load continues to grow.
What are some other ways path labs[...]

One more question might be interesting to ask in relation to the questions above – does your vendor have a traditional software model or are they a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) company? We’ve published several posts over the past year on the benefits of the SaaS model. One that you may find helpful is SaaS, Healthcare IT and customization. [...]

Anyone else noticing how the topic of social media keeps coming up more and more often in this industry???

As mentioned in our recent post, Meaningful Use and Pathology Labs, we stated we would start forwarding on information regarding the affects of Meaningful Use (MU) on pathologists. Check out this CAP article called Experts Detail Meaningful Use Challenges, Opportunities for Pathologists. In it they talk about the demand for interfaces and they list 8 objectives (8 of the 15 core objectives – eligible physicians must choose three required core measures and substitute alternate core measures where necessary) specific to pathology. Here is the listing…

Computerized physician order entry (CPOE)
Report ambulatory clinical quality measures to CMS/states
Implement one clinical decision support rule
Provide Patients with an electronic copy of their health information, upon request
Record demographics
Maintain an up-to-date problem list of current and active diagnoses
Capability to exchange key clinical information[...]

It is no secret that pathology groups are fielding calls from their referring physicians, hospitals, and healthcare partners to build EMR interfaces. Check out our previous post Impact of EMR adoption on the Pathology Lab. The first impact that we noted in that post is labs must spend $ on LIS-to-EMR interfacing. We also note that this means hiring adequate IT resources to deliver on the increasing interface volumes. If you are a pathology group that has decided to look at an LIS-to-EMR partner instead of hiring internally, another good post to review is 6 Factors: Choosing LIS-to-EMR Partner.
Recently, we’ve had discussions with numerous pathology practices that are getting those calls from their referring physicians but are concerned about the cost. This concern is definitely warranted. An example we talked with last[...]

Terminology- it is interesting how perceptions are formed based on a particular set of words even if those words are the only real differentiators of something. Word usage does make a difference.
We enjoy reading Bruce Friedman’s posts on Lab Soft News. If you aren’t already, you should following him on Twitter @labsoftnews.Yesterday’s post Who Will Build the Diagnostic EMR (D-EMR) as a Substitute for Today’s LISs? was of great interest to us because of our focus at Pathagility. In it, Dr. Friedman introduces the term Diagnostic EMR or D-EMR. Following is how he describes his vision of D-EMR:
“I envision that such a system will be cloud-based system and encompass and support all of the leading hospital-based diagnostic services (i.e., pathology, lab medicine, radiology, and cardiology).”
Dr. Friedman goes on to describe what LIS vendors will[...]
