My apologies for not writing frequently, a lot has been happening in my life lately! I’ve been quite busy recently, praise the Lord! I love staying busy. :) So what exactly has been happening? I have begun to do live stuff in Austin. I’ve sang at several Churches now, and am really enjoying the live aspect of being a musician. I have an opportunity to sing and speak at a youth conference; I’m praying about that right now. (Don’t want to get in over my head.) Though I’ve been doing live stuff, I haven’t left the studio behind! I’m producing for a good Brother in Christ of mine (Michael.). He is a gospel rapper, so I’ve been creating and producing beats with him. Together we are reaching an audience that I couldn’t reach by myself. (There are a lot of lost people and new Christians that only listen to rap. We give them rap about Jesus Christ instead of sin and lust.) I know the whole idea of Christian rap may be odd, or perhaps repulsive to some of you. However, remember that there are many on the streets of Austin that need the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They will listen to rap and rap alone; when rap tells them about Jesus Christ and the Truth of His Word, it is a life changing event for them. I thank God for the opportunity that He has given to Michael and I to reach out to those on the streets AND those in Churches with the Truth of His Word. God has been blessing us with opportunities to minister in different places and it has been a huge blessing. I found Paul Washer’s comments on Christian Rap quite interesting. Check it out here.

Anyhow, so I’ve been producing for Michael, working as a web developer, and writing new songs. And I’m still finishing high school. The label has recently released my album to the radio stations around the country. I’m not sure if those stations will be willing to play my music, but it would be neat if they did. Everything is copyrighted and the royalty stuff is in line now. I think I’m going to wait awhile on recording the next album, maybe a year or so. Lord willing I’ll collect some new gear, and I’ll be able to apply some new techniques that I’ve learned recently to my audio. Thankfully the label took my files and mastered them to sound good.

So, you wonder, what’s next? Well, my album is coming out to digital stores officially tomorrow. I’ve got some cd signings at Hastings coming up, and some more live events in Austin coming up. I would be posting all this on Facebook, but due to the spam filters being turned up, they accidentally disabled my account again so I’m waiting for them to get back with me. :)

I’ve got to go to bed now, I have an early morning waiting. :)

Blessings and Christ,

Patrick Coffey

P.S I just realized it’s valentines day. LOL, happy valentines day. (I’m not a valentine fan.)

Changes!

Hello everyone! I know it’s been awhile since I posted, but I’ve been pretty busy. :) My album, Come Back, is now available at the label’s store, *click here to check it out*. I also have an event coming up, a CD signing at a local Hasting, so if you are in Tx, or passing by, stop by this Hastings store! I just wanted to give you a heads up, I am going to be changing my website pretty dramatically soon. I’ll be incorporating my blog into it, with the ability for anyone and everyone to post comments. Eventually I’ll be deleting this blog. I’ll also be setting up an online store for CDs, T-shirts, and other items that I’ll have. That’s all I’ve got for now, Stay well and warm! If you had one more minute of your life, and you could say anything about anything to anyone or everyone, what would you say? That’s an honest question, and it’s a tough one. Comment below and tell me your answer!

New Photos

Remember the photoshoots I talked about previously? Well, the results are in. Check out some of the new pics here! I’m excited about these photos, not because I like to look at pictures of myself (LOL), but because some of these will likely be used in my Album Art.

Many thanks to Kristen Sowell for the wonderful job on the pictures. We struck up a cool deal; I programmed her a website and she did my photoshoots.

On a musical note: (Ha, get it? OK, I’ll admit, that was another stupid joke. Sorry guys.)

The producer at TMG has finished mixing/mastering my music. He did a great job! One of the songs sounded like it was missing something, so I did a remix myself and added some effects. I don’t know if I’m allowed to do that contractually, if not I’ll just go with his version. I contacted him last week and let him know the order in which the songs go, and the name of my album, this month (November) the artwork gets done. I’m waiting to hear back from him on whether or not we can use my remix, and on where I can submit my photos. When he gets me that info, I’ll get them the footage from my photoshoot, and I guess I’ll be scheduled for artwork.

On a high school note:

I finished my high school liturature! Yes! Now I only have 3 subjects to finish before I complete all of my credits.

Well, I gotta run.

Blessings and peace to you all,

I hope that you have been well in Christ Jesus.

My apologies for the lack of updates, I have been pretty busy writing some new songs, doing school, camping, getting my drivers licence, studying music, and surfing the waves that life (or God, since He is my life) rolls my way.. Despite the busyness, there really is not much of an update to give you. I have written a couple new songs, but I expect it will be awhile before you get to hear them, so I’m not really even sure why I’m telling you about them. :D

The production of “Come Back” has been going slowly recently. I finished my job with the vocal tracks, and sent them in for approval. After being approved, they have been waiting in line for an audio engineer to mix them with the instrument tracks, and master the final results. A few days ago, an engineer contacted me and let me know that my project has been added to his 2010 October schedule, so I anticipate that the mixing will begin shortly, and the production speed will increase slightly. I mentioned in an earlier post that I had a photo shoot done. Well, the photos are in-process and will be submitted to the label soon for the development of the album artwork/booklet theme.

I have also been studying music quite a bit lately, listening closely to the mixing jobs of professional engineers, and carefully analyzing and recreating techniques. I recently met a wonderful young man of God that is a songwriter as well. We have lightly discussed the production of his music in my studio, so I am (as the Lord provides time) studying his genera of writing. We will see what the Lord brings out of this, if He does, but as an still-learning audio engineer I should leap at any chance to increase my skills and knowledgeableness in audio production.

Let me think for a minute and scrub my brain for anymore updates…

... … … … … loading 5 seconds remaining … … … … …

OK, the search results were “0”, so I guess that’s all I have to tell you.

Alright, alright, so that was the dumbest joke you’ve ever seen on the web. I know, I know. Sorry for that nugget of confusing corniness. If you know me personally, you are probably tired of un-funny jokes, so just skip that part up there. ^

Blessings to you all, and remember, never stop telling the world about Jesus.

Today, I got news back from the label saying that the tracks sounded great, and were approved for mixing and mastering. YES! So I’m happy about that. :) I guess I’ll be scheduled for mixing/mastering sometime, and will (hopefully) be able to give ya’ll more details soon.
I also had a photoshoot done today. We got a lot done, and the photographers were awesome (many thanks to them). We still have a little bit to do, it was rainy/cloudy today so the natural lighting was off, and we ran out of time, so another shoot is scheduled for next Friday morning. I also mentioned that I’m coming up with some new website ideas and templates, so hopefully when I get the photos, I’ll be able finish up work there and launch the site.
I’m also researching how to get an artist page on the new (came out on Wednesday) iTunes Ping. If you don’t have an account, be sure to check it out at least. It’s pretty neat, if you like music and have friends who like music. I’m not sure how it works yet, but am determined to figure it out. :) Gotta stay on top of stuff…

Thanks for reading! If you haven’t yet, check out my Facebook, myTwitter, my website, and my iLike.
Blessings to you in Christ Jesus,
Patrick

Another Update

Hello subscribers and readers!

I apologize for not updating you sooner, as there has been updates to give, but I have been quite busy with music, school, family, designing websites, and life in general.

As of Monday, I submitted my vocal tracks to TMG for review. I recorded them in my own studio here in Austin, and sent them to the Production Department over the internet. I am a bit anxious to see what their decree is, as I don’t consider myself to be a singer of excellent quality, but I’m fairly sure that the quality of the recording is at the least acceptable. We will see.

Hopefully within the next month or so, I will also be having a professional photo shoot for my album artwork, EPK, website, and other graphics-oriented promotion materials.

I am also re-designing my website, as new needs occur and old ones pass away. After the new photos and graphic design is done, I’ll finish the site up and launch it. I anticipate the new site will be more graphically pleasing, and provide new levels of interactive functionality. I have been slowly working on the templates and styling sheets, but things will really start coming to life with the fresh photos and data come in.

I do like to keep new things coming out, so I have launched two new features on my current site. The first, and most exciting feature is the rss mailing list. Yall can now subscribe to my updates via email. Just navigate to my front page and fill your email address into the form under the Recent News section. Please feel free to subscribe to the list! It makes it quite easy to be updated! Also, if you have a mind too, please invite others that you know would like my music to do the same! The second new feature is the bio. Go to my Lyrics page of my website, and click “Read About Patrick Coffey”. Many thanks to my author-mom for writing this. :)

Now on a different subject, many people that I know and meet ask about my current album and it’s progress. But most of them also ask; “Are you planning on doing another album sometime?”. The answer to that is “yes, most definatly.” I am already working on sound ideas and songs for the next record. (hoping to change the sound and give you guys some new stuff. :) ) However, the new record is not a priority right now. Generally the next question they ask is “do you plan on performing?” Short answer, yes. Long answer:

Just because I make music doesn’t mean that people are going to find out about it, so the next priority for me (after the current album is out) is to go out and (Lord willing) grow a solid fan base. Do evangelists evangelize to no one? Nope, they go out and find the lost so they can preach to them. Do teachers preach the sermons God has given them in an empty hall? Not so far. Do Christian musicians sing the songs that God has given them to no one? No. If we have a message to preach, we have to go out and preach. My next objective is finding places to play my music and lead people in true worship. (also known as live performance.)

Well, this gets you all up-to-date. :) Thanks again for reading! Don’t forget to subscribe to the mailing list. :)

Blessings to you in Christ our Lord,

Patrick Coffey

New Stuff!

Holla ya’ll!

As you may have known from the recent RSS feed tests, I am switching my primary blog service from Google Blogger to Tumblr.

Tumblr is a great, simple, easy to read format, and I have implemented a more functional, easily used comment system, including logins from Twitter, Facebook, Open ID, Yahoo, and Disqus. Anyone with one of these accounts can comment on my tumblr blog, not just folks with google accounts.

Tumblr also includes a great iPhone app that I can make use of. Another great thing about this switch is that when I post on Tumblr, the RSS feeds will automatically take those posts and add them to Blogger, and vice versa. I’ll still keep up with by blogger account, but If you would like to comment on something, please go here for a more enhanced commenting experience. (LOL, right, an “enhanced commenting experience” , like you’re going to walk away from the computer saying “Wow, I feel so… enhanced! That was extreme commenting! Dude!!” I’m sure you get what I mean though, it’s better than blogger.)

Another new feature:

You can now go to my website, and there (under the recent news) is a little subscription box. You can now subscribe to my posts and newsletters by email! Just enter your email address (All addresses are confidential and will remain as such) and click “subscribe”. Done! Every time there’s an update to be had, you’ll get an automated email! And no, I won’t spam you or bore you with dumb stuff.

You can visit this new blog here:

http://www.patrickcoffeymusic.tumblr.com

Stop by and leave me a comment and a like!

Be blessed in Jesus Christ,

Patrick

What is Christian Music About?

As you may know, there is much controversy in the Christian world over appropriate music styles, generas, and artists. Some claim that only classical styles of music are pleasing to God, and will cold shoulder you if they find that you listen to now-a-days Christian radio. Others accept all musical styles, and allow their musical taste to govern what they will/won’t listen to. I’m not here to justify either state of mind, but I would like to express my opinion on the matter.

First off, we need to understand what Christian music should be, and what it should not be. In the scriptures we (as followers of God) are commanded to glorify God in all aspects of life. (1 Corinthians 6:20) If any music is not glorifying God in a positive manner, it is not of God but of the world (carnal). If the music is of the world, it is enmity against God, and we Christians should probably not listen to it. (Romans 8:6-7, Titus 2:12) One might say “well, it doesn’t contain anything bad, it’s fine.” However, it is my opinion that God made no distinction between “acceptable” carnal things, or “non-acceptable” carnal things. The Bible tells us that God hates the things of the world, and we should not love the things that he despises. Regardless of whether the worldly music immediately arouses sinful behavior, we should abstain from listening to it; when we fill our minds with things that are of the world, we will find ourselves losing focus in our walk, and straying. What goes in comes out. If worldliness is going into the ears and eyes, it will be the result. If truth, God’s Word, and godliness are going into those ears and eyes, godliness will be the result. Even though some secular music may seem harmless, we should trust God’s Word, and He tells us to refrain from indulging in worldliness. (We are to be in the world, but not of it.)

So, my opinion is that a Christian should not be listening to worldly music. But what exactly is worldly music? What is Christian music?

Well, as stated before, Christians must honor God in all that they do, including music-making. If a “Christian” musician is using the talents God has given him to bring attention to himself, he is not really a Christian musician. Why? Simple. Who is he worshipping? God, or something else? He may speak a sweet line (Matthew 7:22-23), but does he live a life that pleases God? When he is on stage, is it obvious that his heart longs to honor God? If his desire to please God in all is not obvious, he is worshipping mammon (or himself), and is of the world. We see what Jesus says about that in Matthew 6:24.

If he is a true follower of Christ, however, it will be quite obvious to you. If it is not obvious that a musician is serving God with his/her entire life, then stay away from his/her productions. Be extremely cautious; if you listen to someone’s music, you are accepting its words as being good and true in your mind, and will conform to it’s words with time. Music is strangely very very powerful. If it is feeding you lies, and you choose to accept those lies in a musical form, you may find yourself believing them. If the music feeds you lies, don’t listen to it. Christians are to walk in the light (truth) and are not to take part in any way with darkness (aka, lies.)

It may seem that I have just labeled all musicians as being worldly, and unfit for Christian ears, and I can see where that might be supposed. There are many artists claiming to be Christians that make beautiful music that seems to be worshipful, but their life is bearing rotten fruit. (Andrea Bocelli for example, sings beautiful hymns, however he is openly living with a woman that is not his wife. bad fruit; out of my iTunes.) I’m not trying to take jabs at anyone, and certainly do not want to take the seat of a judge or be legalistic. However when choosing the music I listen to, I must analyze these things, and I believe that you must as well. There are good, Christian artists out there, we should listen to them instead of todays pop, care free, carnally cultured productions.

OK, I have now made a distinction between music that I believe is appropriate for Christians to listen to, and music that I think to be inappropriate. Back to the question of the title; “What is Christian music about?” Music is about lifting up a joyful noise to God in praise, as David did many times in the psalms. An artist can also use music to speak to his brothers in the audience.

I think of music as a mail system. The artist is the letter writer, the envelope is the harmonically structured sounds, and the lyrics (words of the artist) is the letter. We artists don’t want to put so much time and effort into the envelope that the audience doesn’t ever open things up and get into reading the letter. We want the audience to not only enjoy the music, but also to be encouraged in their walk on the straight and narrow way. It’s not our job to candy-coat our messages with music, or “make the medicine go down with some sugar”, but it is our job to lead people in praise, and speak truth to them through music. Like I said before, music is extremely powerful. If you accept the music, you will eventually accept the words as being truth. The Christian artist’s job is to speak truth to his audience, and bring glory to God.

Christian music is not about “rocking out”. It’s not about “using only classically calm music, and only singing hymns” either. (acoustic instruments have been used to worship things other than God just as much as electric guitars and drums. There are some awful hymns out there as well as awful rock songs.) Christian music is about praising God; lifting up His holy name, and speaking (hearing) the truth. That’s it. It’s not about entertaining, or being entertained. (Not that it shouldn’t be fun) Whether you are worshipping with an orchestra, or a band; as long as you are worshipping in Spirit and in Truth, giving all glory to the Father, God will be pleased with your works. Whether you listen to classical hymns and four-part-harmony, or band music; as long as the music is made in Spirit and Truth, it is feeding you the truth and ministering in a Godly spirit.

Now, some people would choke at this point, and say “Well what about these crazy Christian metal bands and stuff like that?” Well, as I said before, make sure the artists are bringing glory to God and worshipping in Spirit and Truth before you listen to them. I’ll say, Personally, I have not found a metal band that is worshipping God, and I don’t think I ever will, as the style attracts much attention to the lead screamer and the jumping-around-guitarist. If I did find one, I wouldn’t listen to it. No offense to you metal guys, if you’re apart of Christian metal band.)

Remember, the music we listen to is extremely important, and it influences us a lot. Let us all choose to listen to good, God honoring music, and let us Christian artists concentrate on creating God honoring music.

I hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts, thanks for reading!

It may seem that I’m being over cautious, but in my mind, that’s better than being under-cautious.

Well, this is a new blog. I’m trying to sync it with my Blogger account, so everything I post on blogger will show up here. I think the visual aspects on Tumblr are much more pleasing than blogger, so I may end up linking this from my website. We’ll see. I guess I just need to figure out how to make Blogger my main post center, and let the rss feed work out the rest.

For the King,
