Holiday Shows

Another cherished Christmas tradition, family-favorite shows “Christmas in the Smokies” and “Twas the Night Before Christmas” return to share holiday cheer for another year!

Christmas in the Smokies is Dollywood’s favorite Christmas tradition. Celebrate the joy of the season DP’s Celebrity Theater while a cast of fourteen singers and dancers performs holiday favorites while accompanied by a band of nine live musicians.

Join the Baxter family and their larger-than-life mouse friends as they experience their own Christmas miracle in Twas the Night Before Christmas at the Pine Theatre.

Enjoy these classics on our indoor stages, then stroll through the crisp mountain air to experience outdoor performances of “Appalachian Christmas,” “Holiday Wild Roots,” and “O Holy Night.”

Want to sing along? Here’s the first verse of O Holy Night:

O Holy night! The stars are brightly shining

It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth

Long lay the world in sin and error pining

‘Til He appears and the soul felt its worth

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices

For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn

Fall on your knees; O hear the Angel voices!

O night divine, O night when Christ was born

O night, O Holy night, O night divine!

New this year!

After a couple of year’s of fireworks, this year, Dollywood is holding nightly drone shows with the theme of Joyful Season of Light

Watch as hundreds of festive drones dance to festive tunes, lighting up the night with Christmas cheer in a new holiday spectacular your whole family will love.

Don’t forget the rides!

Home of plenty of thrills, from mild to wild, Dollywood has a roller coaster for just about anyone in your group who loves them. Guest favorites include the Wild Eagle – America’s first wing roller coaster reaching 21 stories above the park, giving riders a chance to feel like they’re flying above the mountains. There’s also the Tennessee Tornado – a zooming roller coaster with a 128-foot drop through the mountainous hillside, hitting speeds of nearly 70 mph!

And now open is Big Bear Mountain is the longest coaster at Dollywood, taking guests of all ages on a family-friendly expedition in search of the Big Bear. Circling Wildwood Grove for nearly two minutes on 3,990 ft. of track, this gigantic coaster is a first of its kind at Dollywood with onboard audio, including music and announcements from Ned Oakley himself.

The Peddler Steakhouse

The Peddler Steakhouse will be open Thanksgiving with its regular menu and regular hours –open daily for dinner at 5 p.m. and at 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

The restaurant is well-known to locals and tourists alike. Many guests cite The Peddler as being their favorite dining experience when they visit the area. One move that sets them apart from competitors? Seeing your steaks cut right at the table.

This rustic restaurant is a living piece of history too. Constructed around the original owner’s dream home along the banks of the Pigeon River, you’ll see historic touches all around. The original logs from the home are present in the front dining room, which is constructed over the rock patio that originally sat in front of the house. Best of all, you can get a table overlooking the river.

Custom Cuts

The custom-cut steaks are the star of the menu. Get a New York Strip or a ribeye in 10, 12, or 16 oz sizes. If you’ve got an even bigger appetite, additional ounces are available to add! Guests claim the filet mignon will absolutely melt in your mouth and is well worth the visit. However, The Peddler also offers fresh rainbow trout – a regional delicacy.

For a more upscale evening, The Peddler offers a lengthy wine menu and would be happy to help you pair a glass or a bottle for your meal.

For a sweet treat after your meal, make sure you’ve got room for Kristi’s chocolate cake. This warm cake served with vanilla ice cream and hot fudge rounds out a decadent experience.

It’s time to settle in for Some Creepy Smoky Mountain Ghost Stories. It’s campfire season and that means smores and ghost stories! We have a few to curl your toes and keep you company while you’re in the Great Smoky Mountains in a cozy and safe cabin. Or if you feel adventurous, go check out the haunted spots yourself!

Roaring Fork and Lucy

Along, the narrow, winding, Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail are rushing mountain streams, glimpses of old-growth forest, and a number of well-preserved log cabins, grist mills, and other historic buildings. Visitors might also see Lucy looking for a ride.

According to the story, Lucy lived with her family in a cabin along the Roaring Fork River in the 1990s. She died one night when the cabin caught on fire and burned down. When she died, a man named Foster discovered Lucy’s body on a very cold night in the middle of winter. It is said that this man had seen that she didn’t have any shoes and offered her a ride on the back of his horse. He would take her home. However, this man couldn’t stop thinking about her. He later stopped by the house to see if he could marry the young girl. The parents told him that Lucy had died many years ago. He realized she had died before he had offered her a ride home.

Dare To Visit

It is said that Lucy has been seen wandering near or on the trail. You can visit, Lucy’s home – if you dare.

The cabin where Lucy lived is said to have another ghost woman there. Rooms are still for rent in the 200-year-old cabin. One family staying in the cabin went out for some food because the kitchen was messy, and the table was covered the items. The couple came home and went to bed. When they awoke the next morning, they found that the table was set and complete with everything they needed including napkins, plates, and utensils.

Another family stated the door was open when they arrived. They went to dinner later that night and when they returned, the door was open again. The next day they had made sure that the door was locked tight and latched. There was no way that it could be opened without their key. However, when they returned, the door was open. An old goat cart inside with extra pillows and blankets is said to show up in different parts of the room.

Elkmont

Our Smoky Mountain Ghost Stories continue with Elkmont Ghost Town which is about 8 miles. Take US-411 from Gatlinburg to the Sugarlands Visitor Center. Then drive toward Cades Cove for about 7 miles until you see the sign for Elkmont Campground.

A trip to Elkmont is sure to be filled with mystery and storytelling. Once a settlers’ village, then a logging community, its lively existence came to an end as a wealthy visitors’ country club community that Smoky Mountains National Park let fade into its current dilapidated state.

Today only eighteen of the 70 buildings are to be preserved by the National Park Service. The Appalachian Clubhouse and Spence Cabin were rehabilitated in 2010 for day use. Park crews also completed preservation work on four additional cabins in 2017. These four cabins are now open to the public to walk through and view.

Remaining Cabins

While the remaining cabins are closed to the public until preservation work can be completed, visitors can explore the Elkmont area on foot. Hiking the Jakes Creek and Little River trails leads visitors past the stone walls and chimneys that mark the former locations of the other resort cabins that once stood in Elkmont and were allowed to deteriorate.

Perhaps you will see some of Elkmont’s former residents roaming around.

Just 15 minutes from Gatlinburg, Elkmont offers hiking and exploring opportunities. There are trails, a cemetery, dilapidated buildings to admire from outside and refurbished buildings that can be explored and even rented for special occasions.

Next up on our list of Smoky Mountain ghost stories is the story of Lydia. Originally the Greenbrier Lodge, the log inn catered to wealthy hunters and tourists. The lodge was renamed and reopened as the Greenbrier Restaurant in 1980. It is said that a young woman named Lydia haunts the building, even now.

The story is that Lydia stayed at the inn on the eve of her wedding. The next day, she dressed in her white wedding dress and headed into town to marry. When her fiancée failed to show at the church Lydia returned to the lodge heart-stricken. Still in her dress, Lydia hung herself from the rafters over the second-floor landing. One version of the story is that Lydia’s fiancée was later found dead after being mauled by a wild mountain cat.

Frightening Staff & Guests

It’s said that Lydia, still broken-hearted, roams the Greenbrier Restaurant frightening staff and guests, causing trouble when she knocks food off the shelves of the restaurant’s pantry. The owners, according to southernspiritguide.org, have observed a figure pass a doorway after closing time. “Some years ago, the young son of the owners did see a woman who vanished when he called his father’s attention to it. In 2007 the Greenbrier’s owners allowed the members of the East Tennessee Paranormal Research Society investigate the restaurant. The investigation did capture some photographic anomalies, though the best evidence was an EVP. In it a female investigator addressed the spirit, ‘God bless you, Lydia, I’d be happy to hear from you if you’d like to speak to me.’ A moment later a female voice cheekily responded, ‘Then I’m not dead.’

The Cussing Cover

This one on our list of Smoky Mountain ghost stories is about Mavis Estep who was married to Basil long before the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They called Cades Cove home and they and their children lived in a two-room cabin along the Whistling Branch stream.

Mavis was terrified of being struck by lighting and thought for sure that would be the way she would die. She had been born during a thunderstorm and thought she was fated to be killed by a lightning bolt. She never stayed out in the rain and banished metal beds from the family’s home. This was not to be the case.

Mavis made many quilts and her favorite was a patchwork made with pieces of one of Basil’s shirts, which was a red flannel. Mavis called it the “Cussing Cover” because Basil had been wearing the red flannel during their first marital spat. According to local legend, that spat included some colorful language.

A Broken Promise

Mavis fell ill and when it was apparent that she didn’t have much time left, she gave Basil some instructions. First, she gave him permission to remarry but made him promise that he would never sell any of her quilts and that he never place any of her quilts upon a metal bed. Basil agreed.

Less than a year after Mavis’s death, Basil took a new wife, Trulie Jane Lawson, who also lived in Cades Cove and was much younger. Trulie Jane found that Mavis’s old wooden bed simply wasn’t big enough for her. She persuaded Basil to buy them a metal bed. Now, you know Mavis didn’t like that!

One evening, when the weather was particularly cold, Trulie Jane asked Basil if they could use one of Mavis’s quilts to stay warm. Basil allowed Trulie to bring a quilt onto the metal bed. Trulie chose the Cussing Cover.

Lightning Strikes

In the middle of the night, Trulie Jane awoke to a startling sight: Mavis standing at the foot of her bed. The specter locked eyes with Trulie and started screaming and cussing up a storm. Trulie woke up her husband in a panic, but when Basil was roused from his sleep, Mavis had vanished. Despite Trulie’s protests, Basil assured his wife that it must have been a nightmare, and they both returned to sleep.

A few hours later, a flash of light burst into the Estep home and knocked Trulie Jane right out of bed. When the smoke cleared, she found Basil, lying on the floor, burnt to a crisp, where the metal bed had once stood. The rest of the cabin remained untouched, and the Cussing Cover was in pristine condition. There hadn’t been any thunderstorms in Cades Cove that night, just the stray bolt of lightning that ended Basil Estep’s life.

After Basil’s death, Trulie Jane didn’t want anything to do with Mavis’s quilts. She gave them to one of the Estep daughters, who in turn sold them to a collector. The Cussing Cover is still out there, possibly for sale in a shop around the Smokies. Make sure to ask the story about any quilt you buy.

Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort Ghosts

In July of 1980 two teenage girls visiting from Kentucky were found dead at the Holiday Inn. The story goes that one girl was found in a stairwell leading to the roof while her friend was found a few hours later in her room lying on the floor next to the bed. The girls, friends from Crestwood, Kentucky, were taking a short vacation to Gatlinburg before the start of their senior year of high school. After going out to a local lounge and steakhouse, The Rafters, the girls were seen leaving with a local drifter. He was arrested the following day and charged with strangling the teens. The girls were in or near room 413, and that’s where paranormal activity – including odd noises within the room – center.

The hotel is permanently closed.

Another haunting at the hotel is said to be the spirit of a man named Alvin. Supposedly the spirit of a longtime employee, he has been reported in the kitchen and seems to cause some poltergeist-type activity with kitchen utensils flying through the air.

Another more spectacular ghost story has been told about the hotel’s seventh floor. This is where a scout leader murdered members of his troop.

The Holiday Inn was later renamed the Garden Plaza Hotel (formerly 520 Historic Nature Trail) and operated until it was demolished. The hotel has been replaced with a Hampton Inn It’s unknown if any of the spirits have remained here.

Cades Cove

We love Cades Cove any time of year, but it also is the most well-known location of haunted places in the Smoky Mountains. With its abandoned cabins, churches, and cemeteries, Cades Cove makes for an eerie scene as dusk approaches.

There are a few Cades Cove ghost stories that have been told for decades. One is the tale of “The Cussing Cover,” which can be found in The Granny Curse and Other Ghosts and Legends from East Tennessee, a 1999 book by Janet Barnett and Randy Russell.

When’s the best time of year to visit the Smokies (What to do in the different seasons, highlighting the upcoming fall)?

Let’s start with autumn!

Crisp fall mornings and warm afternoons are great for taking in the incredible mountain trails. And with 850 miles of backcountry trails, there’s a path for everyone in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Appalachian Trail

Approximately 70 miles of the Appalachian Trail run through the park. There are 342 structures maintained in the park, including five historic areas with 97 structures preserving Southern Appalachian heritage, according to the National Park Service.

Hiking in the Smoky Mountains is a great way to take in the stunning colors of fall. Because elevation ranges from less than 1000 feet above sea level to 6600 feet above sea level, you can see the fall foliage in the Smokies from a variety of locations.

Check out our blog posts on hiking trails in spectacular Cades Cove and waterfalls worth the hike.

Fish on!

With 730 miles of fish-bearing streams and another 1,300 miles of tributaries, fishing in the Smokies is a great pastime.

Year-round fly fishing is permitted in the park. You can start fishing thirty minutes before official sunrise but must finish up no later than thirty minutes after official sunset. Either way, it’s a sure way to avoid crowds in the Smokies.

More Fishing Facts

Fishing is allowed in all streams in the Tennessee section of the park, except for Lynn Camp Prong upstream of its confluence with Thunderhead Prong. Detailed information, including a complete list of regulations and a map of fishable park waters, is also available at any visitor center or ranger station.

You will need a valid fishing license or permit from either Tennessee or North Carolina to fish in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. No trout stamp is required. While licenses and permits are not available for purchase in the park, they can be obtained in many nearby towns or online. Special permits are required for fishing in Gatlinburg and Cherokee.

Be a leaf peeper!

Leaf Color Change of 2023 is here! Stretching over 500,000 acres into both North Carolina and Tennessee, the Great Smoky Mountains are home to thousands of species of plants and wildlife that have been thriving and diversifying for millennia, as one of the world’s few International Biosphere Reserves.

Take a drive along one of the scenic highways, or perhaps travel down one of the 800 miles of trails or just sit on the deck of your American Patriot Getaways cabin and enjoy the profound lifecycle of trees as they change their summer canopy into a crazy quilt of flaming reds and coppery oranges.

When To Visit The Smokies:

So as not to miss it, plan your visit anytime in the middle of October to early November. Farmer’s Almanac predicts Oct. 12-28 as probable dates for peak fall color in Tennessee. American Forests’ Estimated Fall Foilage Map can show you what’s happening where you are going and when.

GOLF

Visit the Smokies to Golf – yes, you can still golf in the mountains. There are several excellent courses.

Gatlinburg Golf Course is an 18-hole course designed by noted golf course architect William Langford. In 1993 and again in 2007, the course underwent major renovations by Bob Cupp & Associates of Atlanta. Today, the completely rebuilt greens and reworked fairways offer seasoned duffers as well as beginners a challenge on every hole.

As the Web site says: “Teeing off is a little different in the mountains. The natural landscape in Gatlinburg makes for quite a few uniquely designed holes. Grab your clubs and test your skills on the beautiful Gatlinburg Golf Course, situated in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. The course features some of the most picturesque rolling hills in the area.

Located just five miles from downtown Gatlinburg, the course lies adjacent to Dollywood at 811 East Parkway. Call for more information, tee times and fees (865) 436-4178.

When is the best time to visit? So as not to miss it, plan your visit anytime in the middle of October to early November. Farmer’s Almanac predicts Oct. 12-28 as probable dates for peak fall color in Tennessee. American Forests’ Estimated Fall Foilage Map can show you what’s happening where you are going and when.

Billed as North America’s largest pedestrian suspension bridge – Sky Bridge is 680 feet from tower to tower. There are long-term plans for some attractions on the other side, but for now, the bridge in Gatlinburg is an experience all its own – with incredible mountain views.

Visitors get off at the new Skydeck, where they can sit outside and enjoy the scene, buy a beer, do some shopping or find the other adventures including the SkyTrail. The recently completed SkyBridge has garnered praise and interest from around the world.

Ober Mountain Aerial Tramway

Take the Aerial Tramway 2.1 miles from downtown Gatlinburg and a 1,500 foot rise in elevation. The two 120-passenger counter-balanced cars provides an amazing aerial experience and sites. The Tramway departs from downtown Gatlinburg and whisks riders up to Ober Amusement Park and Ski Area. You can ride up and back or hang out at the top – to take in the sites, eat and play – year round.

In the winter of 1972 an idea to provide a safer, more comfortable way to reach the ski area was needed and the Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway was born. The tramway was completed August of 1973.

Gatlinburg Scenic Overlook

The Gatlinburg Overlook is located on the Gatlinburg Bypass which runs between the Gatlinburg Spur and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Bypass is open 24/7, year ’round except in inclement weather (snow and ice) and there are no admission fees.

The views are beautiful at any time of the year, especially when in the Fall months (October-November) when the tree leaves turn brilliant colors of red, orange, and gold. The views are truly outstanding during the winter months following snowfall. This is one of the most photographed areas in Gatlinburg. We stop every trip to the area.

There are four parking areas on the Bypass where visitors can exit their vehicles and take in the views.

Gatlinburg Space Needle

The iconic Gatlinburg Space Needle is a 407-foot observation tower that overlooks downtown Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains. Ride the glass elevators to the observation deck for a 360° view. Free viewfinders enhance the “unequaled panorama.”\

Check out the webcam before you go.

The Space Needle is located at 115 Historic Nature Trail
Gatlinburg.

Take a drive on the Foothills Parkway

Visitors to the Foothills Parkway can expect to see breathtaking mountain views and stunning fall colors. The 16 miles between Wears Valley and Walland – completed in 2018 – offer multiple pull offs to hop out of the car, stretch your legs, and take in the scenery. If you’re wanting to see more, continue underneath Highway 321 and drive up the east side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for another 17 miles. The Foothills Parkway ends at US-129, also known as The Tail of the Dragon.

If you can handle 318 curves in 11 miles, continue the drive for more sightseeing! Please note: there are no services, such as gas stations, on the Parkway.

The Blue Ridge Parkway

Located on the North Carolina side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this classic 469-mile drive was built to connect The Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Shenandoah National Park all the way in northern Virginia! You’ll hop on the Blue Ridge Parkway just before entering Cherokee, North Carolina and enjoy driving your way up to the higher ridgelines of the mountains. With multiple pull offs to stop and enjoy the mountains as you go, take in the fall foliage in the smokies from both sides, but Please Note: there are no services, e.g., gas stations, on the Parkway.

Newfound Gap Road

Newfound Gap Road is also known as US highway 441. This road traverses the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is a classic scenic drive. This 32-mile long highway connects Gatlinburg, TN to Cherokee, NC. Along the way, there are multiple pull off spots for you to hop out, stretch your legs, and take in the stunning scenery. When you reach the state line approximately 15 miles from Gatlinburg, stop and take a walk along the famous Appalachian Trail. Or continue your drive to Clingman’s Dome or even Cherokee!

Cades Cove

If you only have one day in the Smokies, we recommend seeing Cades Cove. There’s plenty to see and do there, from hiking to biking to history walks. There is something for everyone! The 11-mile loop road traverses around a large open meadow and is one of your best bets to see wildlife in the Smoky Mountains. Give yourself all day to complete this leisurely and scenic drive. Take plenty of breaks to get out, have a picnic, and learn about the Cherokee and settlers who called this land home before the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Roaring Fork

Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a 5.5-mile long, one-way drive just outside of the heart of Gatlinburg. Feel like you’re driving through history while taking in historic buildings, a mountain vista or two, and listen to the babbling streams. You’ll forget you’re only minutes away from town when you see wild turkey, grazing deer, and even the most famous Smokies resident – the American Black Bear.

Looking for the easiest route to get to these scenic roads? Be sure to check out our post on how to avoid traffic while you’re in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

Colorful Fall Hikes

Hiking in the Smoky Mountains is a great way to take in the stunning colors of fall. Because our elevation ranges from less than 1000 feet above sea level to 6600 feet above sea level, you can see the fall foliage in the Smokies from a variety of locations!

Clingman’s Dome

The highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is easy to access. Enjoy driving on the highest road east of the Mississippi River to get to the parking area of Clingman’s Dome. When you arrive, follow the paved trail for a steep half mile to the observation tower.

On a clear day, stunning 360-degree views await. Observe the fall color from the high elevation. Depending on your visit, you’ll see that it’s changing slowly on its way up the hillsides.

Make sure to bring a jacket on this hike. Temperatures at Clingman’s Dome are 10-12 degrees cooler than they are in Gatlinburg.

Chimney Tops Trail

The trail to Chimney Tops has been extensively changed since the 2016 wildfires. This hike may be less than 4 miles round trip, but don’t let the distance fool you. This steep hike is a workout! You’ll climb nearly 1,100 feet in less than 2 miles to the overlook. Take in the fall colors of the valley below and look to the Chimney’s “next door neighbor” – famous Mt. LeConte.

Always make sure to obey the signs and never climb past a barrier. The extensive fire damage in this area makes the rock surfaces past the barriers unsafe.

Dollywood transforms into a fall and Halloween themed wonderland this time of year for the Harvest Festival presented by Humana.

Always a favorite, Dollywood’s Harvest Festival is filled with fun and whimsy, music, food, and rides. As the mountains come alive with vivid color and the smells of autumn, so too does Dollywood in Pigeon Forge.

LumiNights

After sundown, award-winning Great Pumpkin LumiNights presented by Covenant Health illuminates the evening sky with the glow of more than 12,000 pumpkins of all sizes. The return of Hoot Owl Hollow introduced last year is a must see. The glowing owl and its dozens of friends roost in the trees, atop buildings and across the hillside.

Look for the Bat Archway, the Field of Sunflowers, the Friendly Spider, the Harvest Lights in Craftsman’s Valley, the Wall of Pumpkins, and the pumpkin frogs at Timber Canyon.

Ober Mountain Amusement Park and Ski Resort is a “mountaintop of fun, excitement and beauty.” Little and big kids alike AND all the adults can find entertainment at Ober – outside or warm and cozy inside.

Once you reach the top, outdoor adventures at Ober Mountain include Skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and the children’s play area – Cubbies Snow Zone – where younger children can just, well, play in the snow.

Find lift pass rates here. Ober Mountain offers ski and clothing rental, along with lessons for young and old. Ober Mountain has 10 trails from beginner to advanced, including a freestyle Terrain Park. There are seven lifts to get you there. Check out the Slope report and the live webcams. One camera points at the activities going on. The other camera is the Mountain Valley view.

Snow Tubing

Another great adventure on the mountain is snow tubing. Ride an inner tube and giggle down the 400-foot hill. There are 10 lanes to keep the fun moving. At the bottom, the snow tubing slope has a “magic carpet” that takes the standing riders to the top, avoiding the exhaustion of schlepping up the hill.

Check out some of the fun in this Ober snow tubing video and then get your tickets here.

Inside, visitors will find ice bumper cars, ice skating, a carousel and several casual restaurants.

Ober Mountain Wildlife Encounter is home to a black bear family, including Minnie, BJ, Holly and Chief; River Otters that play at the underwater viewing area, beautiful Bobcats, Fox and Birds of Prey in an enclosed aviary. The Nocturnal House includes various species of native Smokies wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, flying squirrels, turtles and snakes.

In addition to that, The Wildlife Encounter at Ober Mountain is a privately funded, municipally sponsored zoo, licensed by the U.S.D.A. as an exhibitor.

How to get to Ober:

Take the Ober Tram, which is 50 years old this year! The cable car has been taking passengers from downtown Gatlinburg to the Ober amusement park and ski area since August 1973. Check out this video for a taste of what you’ll experience!

The lower terminal of the Aerial Tramway and the Aerial Tramway Mall are located downtown at 1001 Parkway.

The Aerial Tramway transports riders 2.1 miles from downtown Gatlinburg up to the Ober Mountain Adventure Park and Ski Area.

Or drive Ski Mtn. Road to 1339 Ski Mountain Rd, Gatlinburg.

Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair – October 5 – 22

These skilled craftspeople demonstrate their talents as you shop.

Each participant is subject to a rigorous jury process to ensure the uniqueness and quality of their respective products. All items represented are handmade and of utmost quality and without duplication. Look for exceptional pottery pieces, molded leather, copper art, local candy makers, and many more unique items.

Are you looking for a waterfall hike? The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a popular vacation getaway for good reason. We have beautiful mountain peaks, many of the highest in the eastern US. We’re also home to more than 2900 miles of flowing streams. Flowing streams means plenty of waterfalls! Ask any visitor to the park and you’ll hear how much they loved a certain waterfall hike in the Smokies they visited with their family. While each tourist has their favorite destination, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite waterfall walks in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that are also family friendly and easy enough for any member of your group.

Cataract Falls – The Easiest to Access

The trail to Cataract Falls is a nice and easy walk for any family. Start at the Sugarlands Visitor Center and follow the self-guided nature trail. Along the way, you’ll be able to climb inside a giant sycamore tree and cross a bridge over a babbling stream. The stream is a great place to climb in and look for salamanders along the way.

As you wind your way back to the falls, you’ll cross under a park access road before climbing a small set of stairs. At the top, turn right and wander back to the waterfall. Take care to stay on trail by the waterfall and not be tempted to climb the hillside. Lots of erosion has exposed too much of this fragile area.

You can return to the visitor center the way you came. This gentle trail is 0.75 miles round trip and makes one of the best hikes for kids in the Smoky Mountains.

Laurel Falls – The Most Popular

Laurel Falls Trail is arguably the most popular hike in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With an 80 foot waterfall as the “payoff” for this hike, it’s easy to see why. This hike is best for families in the Smoky Mountains who like to get an early start, or families who want that last minute activity before heading out to supper. Laurel Falls gets extremely busy during the late morning and afternoon.

Follow the paved trail for approximately 1.2 miles, being sure to pay attention to little ones, as there are a few drop offs along the way. This is one of the few places you’ll find mileage markers on a trail in the park as well, so no more asking “are we there yet?!”

The most interesting feature of this waterfall is the fact that a bridge transects the waterfall. You’ll cross at the base of the upper falls, so make sure to see both sets while you’re here. You’ll return to the car the way you came.

While this trail was paved to help prevent erosion, but make no mistake – it isn’t stroller friendly.

Don’t want to fight the traffic and find a parking spot? Don’t worry! The tan line of the Gatlinburg Trolley drops off here for a small fee all summer long.

Grotto Falls – The Most Unique

For the family who loves waterfalls, Grotto Falls is a must see in the park. While there are many places you can see waterfalls, Grotto Falls is the only one you actually walk behind as part of the trail! To reach the trailhead for Grotto Falls, you’ll need to drive the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. The Grotto Falls parking area is easy to find and well-signed. This is another hike you want to start early in the morning. Limited parking and a 1-way road means you may not find parking.

Once you get parked and ready to hike, you’ll follow the sign on the Trillium Gap Trail to the left for approximately 1.3 miles. This well-worn and widely graded trail is a gentle walk. When you reach the falls, a 25-foot cascade is a real treat. The shallow pool at the base of the falls is a great place to look for salamanders and cool off your feet on a summer day. If you’re coming for just the waterfall, turn around here.

Otherwise, continue on 5.5 more miles to the top of the famous Mt. LeConte. It’s important to note this road is closed from December to mid March every year, so you’ll want to make sure the road is open before deciding to take this Smoky Mountain waterfall hike. The road is also not suitable for RVs, buses, or long vans. For 2019 and 2020, Trillium Gap Trail is closed for rehabilitation From May 6 to November 14 from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The trail will be open on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and federal holidays.

Spruce Flat Falls – The Off Trail Adventure

Planning a trip to Cades Cove? Definitely save some time for this secret waterfall! Spruce Flats Falls is a local favorite for getting a quick walk in the woods.

On your way to or from Cades Cove, you’ll turn off at the Tremont Road. Follow the signs to the Tremont Institute and park here. From the parking area, you’ll wander up the hill on a gravel road and follow the signs for the Buckeye Trail. You’ll pass through parts of the Tremont Institute property before intersecting a second trail.

You’ll take a left and head up a short, but steep hill. At the top, be rewarded with views of the road below and Thunderhead Mountain and the famous Appalachian Trail above. You’ll have a short downhill and use a unique foot log with carved in steps before reaching the waterfall. The trail is a bit more rugged here with rocks and tree roots, but it is easy to follow.

The tiered waterfall makes a few unique places to explore, and the stream isn’t too deep for a quick splash. You’ll return to your car the way you came for a challenging, but fun, 1.4 mile walk.

Baskins Creek – The Hidden Waterfall

Baskins Creek Falls is thought of as a hidden waterfall in the park. The trail to it is unique in the sense that you’ll begin your hike by going downhill to this waterfall instead of up. You’ll park on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail almost immediately after turning on to it. Take the Baskins Creek Trail to your left and follow the trail slightly uphill for just a moment before it levels off and drops down. Walking through this area, you’ll get an up close and personal look at the fire damage from the 2016 wildfire that ravaged the park and the city of Gatlinburg. Witness first hand how fire ecology, while damaging, creates new undergrowth and allows new trees to take root.

At approximately 1 mile, you’ll need to cross a stream with no foot bridge. Try your best to stay in the water and avoid creating erosion around the stream. After another 0.25 miles, you’ll see a side trail veering to the left. This unmarked trail leads up a steep hill to a small family cemetery.

At mile 1.3, reach the trail junction on your left down to the waterfall. The trail becomes quite rugged and steep, so take care with your footing as you head down to the waterfall. When you reach it, you’ll see a 40-foot falls. Cross the small stream and have a snack and snap some photos before you begin the climb back up to your car.

This trail drops approximately 700 feet in elevation, so give yourself plenty of time to climb back up on the way out.

It’s important to note Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is closed from December to mid March every year, so you’ll want to make sure the road is open before deciding to take this Smoky Mountain waterfall hike. The road is also not suitable for RVs, buses, or long vans.

Hen Wallow Falls – The Quiet Waterfall

Located in the Cosby section of the park, this hike will see far fewer crowds than some of the other walks listed here. You’ll park in the hiker parking area, easily visible and marked with a sign, before walking down the road and heading left into the woods on the Gabes Mountain Trail.

The early section of this hike takes you through an area that was hit by catastrophic flash flooding in 2015, and a high wind event only a few years earlier. After approximately 1 mile, you’ll cross Rock Creek on a foot log and head on an uphill climb. When you reach the ridgeline, check out the interesting rock formations and gorgeous lichens that formed on these rocks.

At mile 2.1, you’ll see a sign pointing you steeply downhill to the waterfall. While the falls start narrow at the top, the water fans out slowly down the 90 foot drop. It’s a truly stunning sight after a heavy rain. You’ll return back to your car the way you came.

Abrams Falls – The Classic Waterfall

No trip to Cades Cove is complete without a trip to Abrams Falls. This classic Smoky Mountain waterfall hike should be a part of your vacation. At 5.2 miles round trip, this is the most difficult walk of the line up. The well worn path is easy to follow and quite wide for a large portion of this hike. You’ll be close enough to the creek to hear it for nearly the entire length of the hike, although thick rhododendron doesn’t make it easy to access for most of the walk.

For 2.5 miles, you’ll wander on gentle uphills and along a ridgeline in a gorgeous forest. You’ll also see some signs of devastation where a tornado tore through the area in 2011. Fortunately, the forest has been able to recover well.

At mile 2.6, you’ll see a footbridge to your left to take you out to a small beach area to view the raucous waterfall. Take great care in this area. While the deep pools look inviting for a swim, the strong undertow and unique geologic formation of this waterfall make it a deadly area to do so. This trail is frequently listed as one of the most dangerous in America due to the numerous swimming accidents occurring here.

Enjoy the waterfall and have a picnic before returning to your vehicle the way you came.

A reminder that on Wednesday and Saturday mornings during the summer, Cades Cove is closed to vehicular traffic until 10 a.m. to allow ample space for bicycle riders and walkers to enjoy the road. Starting this hike in the morning, going on a weekday, or in the off season will be your most enjoyable way to see this waterfall. It has been reported that nearly 1000 visitors a day trek to Abrams Falls during the peak season.

Lynn Camp Prong – Off the Beaten Path

Lynn Camp Prong doesn’t get a lot of accolade, but it should definitely make the list. This lovely side trip makes a great place to unwind after spending the day in nearby Cades Cove. It’s easy to access and doesn’t require a ton of extra time on your schedule.

Follow Tremont Road past the Tremont Institute. The paved road will turn to gravel. Now, you’ll be following along the old railroad bed for three miles until you reach the parking area.

If you have extra time, it’s always nice to grab the autotour booklet and make the guided stops along the way as well!

After parking, you’ll follow the Middle Prong Trail. This old rail grade is nice and wide with decent footing. After approximately half a mile, you’ll see the gorgeous and multitiered Lynn Camp Prong Falls. At more than 30 feet high, this waterfall is absolutely breathtaking, especially after a hard rain.

If you’re feeling adventurous, travel another quarter mile up the trail to view another multitiered, albeit smaller, waterfall with a beach for viewing. Turn around and return to your vehicle the way you came.

Time for some rest and relaxation!

Sometimes we just want to avoid crowds in Gatlinburg and get away from everyone except our loved ones when we vacation. The Great Smoky Mountains is perfect for doing just that. The Smokies are the place to enjoy the quiet of the mountains, a secluded cabin, walks in the woods, wildlife, fishing, or a peaceful kayak/canoe trip. This is where you can take a hike, find mountain streams, waterfalls, and amazing views. You can take a scenic drive and stay in the car, with the windows down, smelling the wonderful mountain air.

Here are our favorite ways to avoid crowds in the Smokies.

1.Take a Scenic Drive

Driving in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a wonderful way to stay close with family and friends while taking in the stunning natural beauty, the flowing waterfalls, the incredible wildflowers, and the wild animals. The park was created in 1934 with auto touring in mind.

Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is 5.5 miles long and a one-way looped, narrowing road. You’ll drive past well-preserved vintage cabins and grist mills. They’re quiet snippets of history. Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is open April through November.

To get there, take the main Gatlinburg Parkway (Hwy 441), make a turn at stoplight #8. You will follow Historic Nature Trail Road to the Cherokee Orchard entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You will come upon signs to follow for the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. The motor trail makes a loop and ends in Gatlinburg. At the stop light, turn left onto Hwy 321 and you will return to the Gatlinburg Parkway.

Cades Cove is one of our favorite places! A lush valley surrounded by majestic mountains. Cades Cove is known as one of the most stunning areas of the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee.

Don’t be surprised if you see Deer, Black Bear, Coyote, Groundhog, Turkey, Raccoon, and Skunk! There’s lots of animals that call this place home!

For motorists, there is an 11-mile loop road that circles the Cove. The loop is a great feature that offers tourists the opportunity to sight-see at their own pace and to avoid crowds in the Smokies. Always remember to pull off to the side of the road and let other motorists pass if you’d like to stop and taken in the views.

Rich Mountain Road offers another fantastic route to view Cades Cove. This route is an 8-mile one-way road that ditches pavement for gravel, really bringing you closer to nature. Take it easy on this path and really soak in Cades Cove as you head up the mountains and back to Townsend. Check out our guide to Townsend and The Foothills Parkway.

This road leads you away from Cades Cove. You cannot go back into the park without driving back to the main entrance of the loop road. The road is winding and steep; a 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended by the National Park Service for this route.

Upper Tremont Road

Upper Tremont is a hidden gem. It is the road away from it all, offering you a peaceful drive. You’ll know from the gravel path that it’s the road less taken by tourists. Upper Tremont Road can be found near Wears Valley, on your way to Cades Cove. It’s another scenic drive that allows you to really enjoy the wonders of mother nature and avoid crowds in the Smokies. This is especially true during the fall season. If you want to get out and experience the area, that option is available, too. Be sure to pick up the self-guided auto tour booklet from the start of the road. Stop at all the waypoints and learn the rich and varied history of Tremont.

On the Upper Tremont Road, you will find several hiking trails to choose from: waterfalls, rivers, and tree-shaded parking areas. For more scenic drives, check out our blog post.

2.Take a Hike

The Great Smoky Mountain National Park has more than 150 trails to choose from with over 800 total miles of hiking trails. Likely the more difficult trails will be the least crowded.

From the Sugarlands Visitor Center, 2 miles south of Gatlinburg, drive 8.6 miles east on Newfound Gap Road. There you will find two parking areas, where a gravel path leads to The Grassy Patch and the beginning of a 2.3 mile hike to Alum Cave Bluff. This moderately difficult hike is 4.6 miles round-trip or 5.1 miles on to LeConte Lodge. The round-trip to the cave bluff takes about 2 and 1/2 hours, but allow about 3 and 1/2 hours to LeConte Lodge. The Alum Cave Trail is the most popular and well-known route to Mount Le Conte. Features include Arch Rock, 1993 summer storm damage, Inspiration Point, Alum Cave Bluff.

Rainbow Falls Trail

The Rainbow Falls Trail is fairly challenging if completed all the way to Mt LeConte. Allow an hour and a half to Rainbow Falls and four hours to Mt LeConte. Hikers will gain nearly 4,000 feet in elevation by the time they get to Mt. LeConte. The point of departure is at Cherokee Orchard Road – Turn at light #8 in Gatlinburg and follow the Airport Road 1 mile out of Gatlinburg into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The name will change from Airport Road to Cherokee Orchard Road.

About 2.5 miles after entering the Park, Cherokee Orchard Road approaches the Rainbow Falls parking area. You will find the trail head at one edge of the parking area. Features of interest include the 2.8 mile point when you arrive at Rainbow Falls. At the 6.6 mile point you will come upon an Alum Cave Trail junction which leads left 0.1 mile to the LeConte Lodge. You can hike from Cades Cove too.

3.Avoid Crowds and Go fishing

Year-round fly fishing is permitted in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You can start fishing thirty minutes before official sunrise but must finish up no later than thirty minutes after official sunset, either way, it’s a sure way to avoid crowds in the Smokies. Here are a few other fishing facts worth knowing:

Douglas Lake is a beautiful, 30,400-foot lake with a maximum depth of 140 feet. The fishing is grand here – just ask my nephew Alex and my brother-in-law Matt. There’s room to play, boat, swim. The lake extends 43.1 miles upstream from Douglas Dam and only has about 17% of the shoreline developed. Rolling hills of farmland and residential areas surround the lake.

4. Kayak or Canoe

The Great Smoky Mountains includes many rivers and what better way to enjoy them than in a kayak or a canoe. Here are some of our favorite spots for creeking and tracking or just floating (you will have to paddle at some point unless you are sittin’ pretty in the middle seat). You can rent a kayak or canoe or bring your own.

Avoiding Crowds In Traffic

If you’ve got a peak season trip planned to Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg, you know that traffic can sometimes be a real pain. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to stay out of much of the traffic and continue to enjoy your trip to the Smoky Mountains, for example: a visit during the week will be much less crowded then the weekend!

Take the Trolley

There are more than 100 stops throughout the Gatlinburg area, making riding the trolley convenient and easy. You can even use the trolley to visit the Great Smoky Mountains! Take the tan line to the popular Sugarlands Visitor Center, Laurel Falls Trail, and historic Elkmont. It also goes to the historic Arts & Crafts Community known as The Glades.

Veterans Boulevard

If you’re not looking to get right into the middle of town, taking Veterans Boulevard can help you avoid traffic in Pigeon Forge. If you’re coming in town from Highway 66 at exit 407 or off Highway 411 from exit 432, Veterans Boulevard may be your best option. Veterans Boulevard parallels the Pigeon Forge Parkway and can take you in to town at stoplight #8. By utilizing Veterans Boulevard, you can still access Dollywood and Splash Country. Why not rent a cabin near Dollywood and not only avoid that Pigeon Forge traffic, but maybe even catch a fireworks show from your very own porch every night!

Teaster Lane

If you need to travel through Pigeon Forge to reach your destination, you’ve got an alternative to the main Parkway.

Running from stoplight #2 all the way to Veterans Boulevard, you can take Teaster Lane and get in to Pigeon Forge at stoplights #2, #2A, #3, and #4. It also may be the easiest way for you to access The Island during times of high traffic.

In 2019, new development is underway on Teaster Lane as well. The Mountain Mile and Tower Shops began construction with a drive-in style movie theater called August Moon in the works. Check out all the new attractions you can visit in 2019 and 2020 over on our travel guide.

They even offer non-dairy, dairy free and gluten free flavors.

Located next to Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, the Crazy Mason was started by husband-and-wife team Bo and Sherri Steele who “built a life and a family together with dreams of doing something big and just a little crazy.”

Bo brings years of experience in business, working in the food industry and as a distributor, while Sherri’s marketing background, creativity and design skills help put a unique touch on everything they do together, the couple say on their website.

Where This Unique Ice Cream Began

“As locals in the tourist-friendly town of Myrtle Beach, S.C., the idea for The Crazy Mason came out of a desire to start something new the area has never seen before. Sparked by a love of all things sweet and a flair for creating unique, picture-worthy treats the Steeles developed a concept that has become an immediate hit with locals and visitors alike.”

“Using more than 100 ingredients, including locally grown produce and toppings sourced from partnerships with local bakeries and businesses, the family remains focused on keeping things local and giving back to their communities even as they expand into new markets.”
