Dr. Cees Vermeer, one of the world's top researchers in the field of vitamin K, founded a vitamin K research group in 1975, which is now the largest group investigating this area of nutrition science.

How many people have adequate vitamin K… care to guess?

Just about zero, according to Dr. Vermeer and other experts in the field.

Most people get just enough K from their diets to maintain adequate blood clotting, but NOT enough to offer protection against he following health problems—and the list is growing:

•Prostate cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer and leukemia
•Arterial calcification, cardiovascular disease and varicose veins
•Osteoporosis
•Brain health problems, including dementia, the specifics of which are still being studied
Vitamin K comes in two forms, and it is important to understand the differences between them before devising your nutritional plan of attack.

Two Basic Types of Vitamin K
Vitamin K can be classified as either K1 or K2:

1.Vitamin K1: Found in green vegetables, K1 goes directly to your liver and helps you maintain a healthy blood clotting system. (This is the kind of K that infants need to help prevent a serious bleeding disorder.)

It is also vitamin K1 that keeps your own blood vessels from calcifying, and also helps your bones retain calcium and develop the right crystalline structure.

2.Vitamin K2: Bacteria produce this type of vitamin K. It is present in high quantities in your gut, but unfortunately is not absorbed from there and therefore most of it is passed out in your stool.

K2 goes straight to vessel walls, bones, and tissues other than the liver. It is present in fermented foods, particularly cheese and the Japanese food natto, which is by far the richest source of K2.

Vitamin K2 can convert to K1 in your body. As a supplement, K1 is less expensive, which is why it's the form used for neonates.

Making matters even more complex, there are several different forms of vitamin K2.

MK8 and MK9 come primarily from dairy products. MK4 and MK7 are the two most significant forms of K2, and act very differently in your body:

•MK4 is a synthetic product, very similar to vitamin K1, and your body is capable of converting K1 into MK4. However, MK4 has a very short half-life of about one hour, making it a poor candidate as a dietary supplement. After reaching your intestines, it remains mostly in your liver, where it is useful in synthesizing blood-clotting factors.
•MK7 is a newer agent with more practical applications because it stays in your body longer; its half-life is three days, meaning you have a much better chance of building up a consistent blood level, compared to MK4 or K1. MK7 is extracted from the Japanese food called natto.
For those who are interested in getting a supply of vitamin K2 we do have it in our store.

Vitamin K Research is Clearly Impressive
In 2008, a German research group discovered that vitamin K2 provides substantial protection against prostate cancer, which is one of the most common types of cancer among men in the United States. According to Dr. Vermeer, men taking the highest amounts of K2 had about 50 percent less prostate cancer.

Research results are similarly encouraging for the benefits of vitamin K to your cardiac health.

In 2004, the Rotterdam Study, which was the first study demonstrating the beneficial effect of vitamin K2, showed that those who consumed 45 mcg of K2 daily lived seven years longer than those getting 12 mcg per day.

In a subsequent study called the Prospect Study, 16,000 people were followed for 10 years. Researchers found that each additional 10 mcg of K2 in the diet resulted in 9 percent fewer cardiac events.

There is also research emerging that vitamin K can help protect against brain disease. However, it is too early to say exactly what types of damage it prevents, and how, but it is an area of intense interest to vitamin K scientists right now.

Getting More Vitamin K into Your Diet
Eating lots of green vegetables will increase your vitamin K1 levels naturally, especially kale, spinach, collard greens, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts.

For vitamin K2, cheese and especially cheese curd is an excellent source. The starter ferment for both regular cheese and curd cheese contains bacteria—lactococci and proprionic acids bacteria—which both produce K2. You get the benefits of these bacteria when you consume them.

Both types of cheese have the same amount of K2, but curd cheese has less fat. If you eat 100 grams of cheese daily, you get 45 mcg of vitamin K2, which will lower your risk for heart attack by 50 percent, according to existing studies.

You can obtain all the K2 you'll need (about 200 micrograms) by eating 15 grams of natto daily, which is half an ounce. It's a small amount and very inexpensive. It'll only shrink your wallet by about two dollars a month.

If you don't care for the taste of natto, the next best thing is a supplement. Remember you must always take your vitamin K supplement with fat since it is fat-soluble and won't be absorbed without it.

You need not worry about overdosing on K2—people have been given a thousand-fold increase over the recommended dose over the course of three years have shown no adverse reactions (i.e., no increased clotting tendencies).

Although the exact dosing is yet to be determined, Dr. Vermeer recommends between 45 mcg and 185 mcg daily for adults. You must use caution on the higher doses if you take anticoagulants, but if you are generally healthy and not on these types of medications, I suggest 150 mcg daily.

It is quite likely that doses of several times that amount are safe for the average person, but we just lack the research to confirm it at this time.

Vitamin D is Vitamin K's Best Friend
Dr. Vermeer makes the point that vitamin K will never be able to do its work alone. It needs collaborators—and vitamin D is an important one.

There is a synergistic effect between vitamins D and K.

These two agents work together to increase MGP, or Matrix GLA Protein, which is the protein responsible for protecting your blood vessels from calcification. In fact, MGP is so important that it can be used as a laboratory measure of your vascular and cardiac status.

If you are concerned about your bones, you must balance a nutritional triad:

1.vitamin D
2.vitamin K
3.calcium
Increasing calcium is good for your bones but not so good for your arteries, which can become calcified. Vitamin K protects your blood vessels from calcifying when in the presence of high calcium levels. So you really must pay attention to the synergism of all three of these nutrients if you want to optimize your benefits.

Laboratory Testing for Vitamin K is in its Infancy
Vitamin K measurements in blood plasma can be done accurately, but the results are really not helpful because they mainly reflect "what you ate yesterday," according to Dr. Vermeer.

Because there are no good laboratory assessments, he and his team have developed and patented a very promising laboratory test to assess vitamin K levels indirectly by measuring circulating MGP. Their studies have indicated this to be a very reliable method to assess the risk for arterial calcification—hence cardiac risk.

They are hoping to have this test available to the public within one to two years for a reasonable price, and several labs are already interested.

Additionally, they are working on developing a home test that would be available at your neighborhood drug store.

At this time, however, there is really no commercial test that would give you meaningful information. But since nearly 100 percent of people don't get sufficient amounts of vitamin K from their diet to reap its health benefits, you can assume you need to bump up your vitamin K levels by modifying your diet or taking a high quality supplement.
This is one reason that we use the Shaklee Protein Drink. I know for myself, it has helped me. Especially during a very difficult health matter that I went through. I was so depleted of protein and didn't realize just how bad until I started taking the ESP.
But we weren’t surprised.

An essential element of the Shaklee Difference is quality control through testing. Shaklee quality means first defining specifications for and then screening raw ingredients themselves for purity and potency, testing each batch of manufactured product to ensure that what is on the label is in the product and to ensure the product has not picked up any contaminants in the process of manufacture. Shaklee conducts over 80,000 of these tests annually, and then guarantees the performance of every product once it is in the consumer’s hands.

Shaklee’s testing of our products actually goes far beyond the kind of testing that ConsumerLab.com put Vita-Lea and other products through, and that is why we continue to rely on our own quality standards and testing.

But we thought you might be interested in hearing the positive results of this recent review.

Note: ConsumerLab.com is a third-party testing company which tests products for manufacturers of nutritional supplements for a fee, but also sometimes conducts product reviews such as this one. Shaklee did not request to be included in this review or compensate ConsumerLab.com in any way. Access to the complete results of the review is available only to those who pay ConsumerLab.com for subscription membership.

Shaklee VitaLea Here

Please feel free to share our blog with a friend.

Now most people can, but for me, my stomach just wont let me. So I have to break things down and eat just bites at a time all during the day just to get it all in. And that is still not good. I thank God for how I can eat now because a few years ago I couldn't eat much at all. (that's a whole other story)

But this is what I had for Thursday:
I had a chicken sandwich for lunch, dinner was stirfry- full of veggies and I had a yogurt today.. Still no fruit, but, I did buy some today!

And for Friday:
Breakfast - peanut butter sandwich. Lunch - few bites of left over stir fry, dinner- whole wheat pasta with shrip sauce with toasted whole grain bread. Once again, no fruit.. but I do drink unsweetened fruit juice. I know it's not as good as having the fruit.

As you can see just from the past few days, I'm still not reaching the much needed food groups that's required each day. But as we go through this Healthy Eating, I'll go more into what is considered a healthy diet. And in doing this, it also gives you a place to start on how and where to change your diet.. So keep tracking what you eat each day and we'll work on this togehter.

Blessings,
Patty
Please feel free to share our blog with a friend.

Do you really know if you eat ALL the foods you're supposed to? Are you getting the amounts of fruits, veggies, grains, etc.. in your diet each day?

I feel that everyone should write down every day for a week, what they eat just to see if they are eating right. So, just to see what you do intake each day, Start writing down for the rest of the week what you have for each meal and snacks. Then later this week I will post some info on what your supposed to each each day.

Even if you eat what you consider a healthy diet, you can still be lacking in many areas. So drag out a little notebook and begin to track what you consume each day.

I'm going to try and post here each day what I eat.. just so I can see how far off I am of a healthy diet. If you would like to post your eating, feel free to do so!

Tuesday - Lunch- Leftover guacamole salad with wild rice. Had tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, onions, garlic and spices.
For dinner I had squash spaghetti/sauce w/toasted wholegrain bread with olive oil and garlic. snack today was 1 slice whole wheat bread with peanut butter.
hmmm didn't get in any fruit today.

Wednesday - I had homemade manicotti, steamed green beans and stuffed eggplant with toasted rye bread with olive oil and garlic.. and I just had to treat myself.. I had a 25 cent candy bar and sprite today. Seeing I had been on the run all day, didn't leave me much time to eat anything else. So, once again.. no fruit..not enough grains and not the full serving of veggies.
Please feel free to share our blog with a friend.

Why?

Consumers reported changing their eating habits due to specific health concerns. Among the greatest worries were heart health and dietary cholesterol intake. The major dietary concern (reported by almost half ofthose surveyed) was reducing fat.

Animal protein is a major contributor to the fat in the average American diet. Americans eat plenty of protein, but it is mostly from meat, eggs, and dairy sources, which are usually high in saturated fat and cholesterol.

In contrast, Energizing Soy Protein is high in protein, that is naturally low in fat, and naturally lactose and cholesterol free. It also provides all the amino acids, including the nine essential ones your body needs but cannot manufacture itself. Using the newest methods for assessing the quality of protein, soy protein that given the score of 1.0 — the highest rating possible and equal to that given animal proteins such as those from eggs and milk. Energizing Soy Protein products are also good sources of calcium and iron.

In addition, Energizing Soy Protein provides naturally occurring beneficial plant compounds that are being extensively studied. Soy contains isoflavones, especially genistein and daidzein. These are intriguing to researchers because they are phytoestrogens and maybe related to soy’s ability to regulate hormonal balanceand deliver long-term health benefits.

Some soy protein products are alcohol-processed, which removes isoflavones. Energizing Soy Protein is water washed to retain naturally occurring isoflavones such asgenistein and daidzein. Shaklee uses only non-genetically modified (GMO) soy protein certified through an Identity Preservation Program (IPP). This programassures that the soy we use is tightly monitored and controlled from planting and harvesting to processing.

Who Might Benefit from Energizing Soy Protein?
• 58 million people who are concerned about heart health
• People interested in reducing their intake of the typically high-fat, high-cholesterol animal sources of protein and supplementing their diet with a plant-based protein source that is naturally low in fat and lactose and cholesterol free
• Vegetarians or vegans looking for a high-quality protein source that contains no animal products
• People interested in the health benefits associated with consuming soy
• Anyone interested in supporting the body’s natural ability to ward off hunger and maintain energy for hours
•Helps build muscle, skin, and hormones
•Supports the immune system
•Retains normal cholesterol levels
•Promotes heart and prostate health.
•Contains soy isoflavones, which can help minimize hot flashes and promote breast health.

Why Choose Shaklee Energizing Soy Protein?
• 14 grams of protein per serving
• Uses only IPP-certified non-GMO soy protein
• Highest-rated protein quality
• Natural vegetarian protein source
• Naturally cholesterol free
• No saturated fat
• 1 gram of total fat per serving
• Naturally lactose free
• 50% of your daily needs for calcium
• All the amino acids, including the nine essential ones you must get from food
• Water-processed to retain naturally occuring isoflavones
such as genistein and daidzein
• Choice of Creamy Cocoa or Natural Vanilla flavors
• No artificial flavors, sweeteners, colors, or preservatives
added
• Kosher certified

How to use:
Mix 3 tablespoons of Shaklee Energizing Soy Protein with a glass of milk, juice, water, or your favorite beverage. Optional: add fruit and blend.

To learn more, visit our site for Energizing Soy Protein
Please feel free to share our blog with a friend.

So this week I wanted to post a very simple recipe but one that is delicious.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Honey Baked Apples:

4-6 Delicious Apples

4-6 TBL Honey

¼ cup Orange Juice

Pinch Cinnamon

I like to take my apples and cut just the tops off. Then take a melon baller and scoop out the core section. Just don’t go through to the very bottom of the apple. Then mix the Honey and Orange Juice together. Spoon this mixture into the center of the apple. Then sprinkle a little cinnamon on top. (If you like, you can also add some raisins and very fine chopped nuts to this mixture)

Place apples in baking dish. You can add just water or a little apple cider to keep the apples moist while baking. Bake in 400 degree oven for about 1 hour or until apple is tender. If your apples begin to brown to fast, simply cover your apples with a little foil.

Let cool for about 10 min. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose. People with influenza can potentially infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 days after becoming sick. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.

What can you do to protect yourself and family?

1- build your body immune system. Take lots of Vitamin C during the cold and flu season. With your body built up, you are able to fight off colds and flu much better and in some cases may not even catch it. Why? Because your immune system is so strong, it can fight it as it attacks you. That's why I am strongly suggesting to everyone to start an all-natural Sustained Released Vitamin C. With this, it is released into your system over a period of time. It’s not dumped in all at once. You will want to take several during the day to build your system. And also your children’s system. They are in daycare and schools where others are not building their systems. So you want to keep your child’s system built up to fight off anything that’s going around in your school or daycare.

2- Come off of sugar or cut back as much as you can. Sugar suppresses the immune system. There is enough sugar in one can of soft drink to suppress the immune system for 8 hours.

3-When you sneeze or cough - they say sneeze and cough onto the bend of your elbow. Not touching your hands to your face to cover it.

4- Wash your hands often. Make sure you wash them with soap and hot water. Washing several times a day helps keep the virus from spreading.

5- Keep a bottle of Shaklee Basic-G - Take a spray bottle of water and add Shaklee Basic-G Germicide. Spray down your home every so often.
Where would you want to spray?
Doorknobs,
Faucet handles,
Toilet handle,
Fridge door,
Computer keyboards (just a note here.. do not spray the keyboard, simply wipe off with cloth dampened with spray OR use the Basic-G wipes)
Counter tops
Appliances
Wipe the arms of your furniture
Wipe down children’s toys
Handle of your brush and combs
Ladies, wipe off the handles of your make-up brushes from time to time.

Any place that you have to turn, pull, touch with your hands.Simply do this a few times a week to cut down on any viruses that could be passed.

6- Keep a few Basic-G wipes in a ziplock bag in your purse. When you head out to places you can wipe down such things as your shopping cart handle, public bathrooms or other facilities.

Taking a few extra steps now can help fight off viruses, flu’s and colds this winter. And these few simple steps can save you much time and money at the doctor’s office. Not to mention the amount of money that you would have to spend on medications and prescriptions.

To Your Health,
Patty Dooley
http://www.4u2behealthy.com

If you would like to know more about Shaklee Basic-G,
please contact me at patty@4u2behealthy.com
Please feel free to share our blog with a friend.

They didn’t support it. And, in fact, they didn’t even know about it until it was published a couple of weeks ago (J.W. Goodman et al, Urol. Res., 37: 41-46, 2009).

Before I get into the results of the study, perhaps I should start with an explanation of why you would even want to do that kind of study.
Let’s start with the problem - kidney stones. They are extremely painful, and they can damage the kidney - particularly if they form over and over again.

To a urologist the solution is simple - just drink two liters of water a day.

The problem is that you have to really, really, really like water to drink two liters a day, and most people just aren’t that into water.
In fact, previous studies had shown that even when patients had a previous kidney stone and were told by their urologist to drink two liters of water a day, the average result was an increase of only 0.3 liters a day of water.

So this group of urologists asked what people were drinking instead of water.

The latest trends show that soft drink consumption is decreasing and consumption of sports drinks and energy drinks is increasing. And, there was absolutely no information on whether sports drinks increased or decreased the risk of kidney stone formation.

So they decided to look at two well-known sports drinks, Shaklee’s Performance and Gatorade, to see whether they would increase or decrease the risk of kidney stone formation compared to the consumption of an equivalent amount of water.

They looked at the effect of each sports drink on the amount of citrate in the urine and by how much they increased the pH of the urine because each of these decreases the risk of kidney stone formation.

They also looked at the effect of each sports drink on the amount of sodium and calcium in the urine because each of those increases the risk of kidney stone formation.

Performance significantly increased the amount of citrate and the pH of the urine, while Gatorade had no effect on either of them.
Neit her Performance or Gatorade had an significant effect on sodium or calcium levels in the urine.

Thus, they concluded that Shaklee’s Performance was superior to either Gatorade or water alone at deceasing the risk of kidney stone formation.

Now you might be tempted to say that this study was of more interest to urologists than the general public. But my guess is that if you have ever suffered through a kidney stone this study is of great interest to you.

But to me the more important conclusion is that, once again, independent clinical studies show the superiority of Shaklee products.
To your health!

Dr. Stephen G. Chaney, PhD
Full Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Nutrition
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Dr. Chaney has been teaching biochemistry, biophysics and nutrition to medical and dental students for over 30 years. In addition he has an active program in cancer research, focusing on chemotherapy. He has authored 80 publications in peer - reviewed journals. Dr. Chaney was instrumental in establishing nutrition education as an important part of the medical school training at UNC at Chapel Hill.
Please feel free to share our blog with a friend.

( I use brown rice or wild rice)

Directions:
1-Bring a pan of water to boil and cook the peppers and tops for 5 min. Drain and set aside.
2-To make the sauce, heat half the oil and add half the onion and garlic. Stew gently for 10 min., until the onion is soft. Add the wine, honey and tomato paste. Let simmer 1 min.
3- Add the tomatoes, cinnamon stick, cloves, bay leaf and seasonings. Simmer, uncovered, for 30 min., until the sauce is thick.
4-Strain the sauce through a sieve and set aside. Heat the stock to the boiling point.
5- To make the filling, warm the rest of the oil and add the remaining onion and garlic. Cook gently for 10 min., until the onions is soft. Turn up the heat and add the lamb, ground spices, and seasonings. Cook for 5 min. , stirring, to brown meat.
6- Add the rice to the lamb mixture. Stir well, then pour over the boiling stock. Cook over gentle heat for 15 min., until all the liquid has been absorbed and small holes appear in the surface.
7- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Stuff the peppers with the rice mixture and replace their tops. Pack them into a dish and pour over the sauce. Cover and bake for 1 hour. Allow to cool before serving - this dish is best made a day in advance.
Please feel free to share our blog with a friend.
