OK normally I would apologise for the forthcoming rant but I see no reason to apologise and would be happy to engage in the debate directly with anyone who wants to…

Lately I have been growing more and more concerned at the moral stance taken by certain agencies and names in the SEO industry and I feel that a rebuttal is in order.

The thing that tipped me over the edge was http://ratoutyourcompetitor.com/ (No im not linking that – partially as I dont want to but more because I would suggest some people may throw some links at that site that could be dodgy)

This “im white and your evil” crap has really started to get to me, who the hell are you to set the moral agenda. Simply following what you consider is gospel handed down from Google isnt SEO and messing with peoples livelihood as a result of your opinions is foolish, short sighted and more morally corrupt than the ‘problem’ it claims to address.

I have also seen a number of agencies spouting that they have a no link buying policy and advising others against that practice. Whilst I completely understand why agencies might have the public stance of not doing anything that goes against the Google guidelines I feel insulted and disappointed if they extend that as a moral position.

Picture if you will two companies, an agency that doesn’t buy links or do any manipulation and a company that buys links in a responsible way whilst informing the client of the risk/reward of any tactic.

The agency claims the moral high ground (Morals set by Google, why the hell we should care what they state I have no idea). They squeeze their monthly fee from the client whilst breeding fear within the client that any slip might cause complete removal. Its a tactic of the corporate leech, pulling every penny they can for the minimum return on the expectation of long term results.

The company buying links on the other hand often states up front what the risk/reward is and helps build a case to justify any risk. Without risk in many industries clients simply will not compete and no amount of good content and wishful thinking will change that fact.
The link builder delivers results and value, value that can be measured.

Who is the morally bankrupt in those opposing positions? I know where I sit.

If you promote the site mentioned in this post, I wouldn’t tell me. You are likely to lose my respect….

Its the end of 2010 and its been a mixed year. I have ditched the SEOidiot tag after many years of the highs and lows of being known and often introduced as ‘Idiot’.

At the start of the year I set some goals, most of them I have happily completed or at least made decent progress on completing.

But there have been some things to make it a bitter sweet year: -

The sad passing of Jaamit (Please give to the appeal for donations)

I didnt know Jaamit as well as some but in the time I did spend with him he never missed an opportunity to give me some abuse (Rightly) and shame me with his dedication and professionalism. I always felt a wave of guilt passing him preparing his talk at Thinkvis when in fact I was sneaking away for a cheeky Peroni.

We also lost an old friend this year in Gman. Geoff had suffered with his illness for as long as I knew him. He actually got into MFA (made for adsense) spam as a result of having to pay his medical bills when his employer left him high and dry.

Geoff was the man who taught me that ugly sites get clicks, that people click standard blue and that scale is vital once you prove there is margin. He once told me that he had over 80,000 .info domains in play, truly the act of throwing enough at the wall to make it pay.

Ill miss them both.

Its also been a year of adjusting the way I work and that’s still a project that needs some work, changing who I work with and what I work on. I am returning to concentrating on my own work as much as possible and removing any partnerships I have had as they haven’t worked for me.

Now enough of all that. Its time for the positives!

So in one quick stream, this is what has happened since I went 100% by myself in business rather than under contract with people. This is about 16 months of stuff but it all seems to fit in to one post. OK so in that time I have: -

Been to…
Cocoa Beach
Daytona
Tampa
Orlando
New York
Atlantic City
Phillidelphia
Toronto
Las Vegas (3 times)
Los Angeles (twice)
San Diego
San Francisco
and a bunch of other places

Ive spoken at….
SES London, SES New York, SES Toronto, SES San Fran, Thinkvisibility, A4U London.
Some of them went pretty well I hope…
Thinkvis for example -
“he still managed to pack a huge amount into his session which was a real highlight of the day for many people”
Without doubt the most entertaining session of the day
he has more than a touch of genius, his ‘what would a spammer do’ session went down a storm with a lot of laughs

Other stuff….
We paid off our mortgage, 4 years ahead of schedule
I dumped the Idiot moniker
I started 3 businesses (More on the way for 2011)
I gambled in Atlantic City and Vegas, in AC I won enough to pay for the hotel and the trip and in Vegas I lost but got a free t-shirt (woot)

And even though that sounds like a busy year (It was) we also managed to take a month off to travel the USA in August. Through my persistent promotion and belief in the power of outsourcing and deriving your income from largely location independent sources I still managed to turn over 80% of what we would have in the UK whilst driving through the deserts of Nevada.

Now this may seem a little indulgent but hell here goes. Here are a few photos from that trip and a story at the end, the sort of story that happens to me all the damn time (I wish it wouldn’t)

So some great places and one memorable night when I got lost on the Nevada desert. I drove till after midnight and then found the only township for about the next 200 miles. One Motel only appeared to have any rooms, a small independent clown themed motel.

Yes I said CLOWN themed.

I walked in, paid for a room and went up the stairs to see what lay in store. Opened the door and flipped on the light. I swear things scattered…
Every room had a picture of a clown above the bed (Mine was a large harlequin – eeek) and a life sized clown statue. I think it would have made the ideal Stephen King movie if the owner took the place of one of these statues each night and lay in wait.

Ohh and to top things off I later find out that the motel was right next to this old cemetary

Photos: Credit

I flipped the light back off ran back down to reception and said “Erm I’m sorry but i’ve decided not to stay” The receptionist replied “mmm yeahhh” (As is ‘we get that a lot’). I dived back in the car and sped off into the night.

At 2am I finally found the next town and crashed in some chain motel. The roads had been silent, scary and the road signs all had bullet holes in ….

Sorry if this has seemed a tad boastful and self indulgent post but hell if you have a year of experiences you better write about them too. I already have my goals for the coming year down and will publically commit to them in the coming days.

I recently spoke at A4U in London on the topic of Negative SEO with Dave, Ralph and Marcus.

Someone asked me after the session if they needed to be aware of anything to help protect their blog from damage. Bear in mind what I am about to explain is probably illegal and this isn’t a guide, its a warning on how to avoid the problem.

So, is it possible to take down a wordpress site without knowing hacking or renting a botnet, paying a hacker etc etc

Yes probably…

Say you have a wordpress site and haven’t prevented directory browsing in your plugins directory (add a line to your .htaccess that says ‘Options All -Indexes’ to prevent that).

The competition could look for plugin names in your source code then confirm it exists by browsing the plugins directory. If they then found a plugin that wasn’t too popular they could set up a way of trying to dupe you.

They could set up a one page site about that plugin with an announcement saying that they had taken ownership of the plugin and now supported it.

They could email you saying that they had taken over the plugin from its author and that you needed to upgrade your version due to a potential security issue and helpfully attach a zip file of the new upgraded plugin.

You might trust them and install that new version. The new version however isn’t that new, its the same as the old version but now they have inserted a few lines to add a hook in the header.

These lines insert the verification code for Google Webmaster Tools.

Now you have a competitor who has verified control of your domain on a fake google account.

They can remove files (removal request on the root?)
They could mess with the config of the www v non www

In short they could make your site disappear

So to avoid: -

Never accept a plugin from anywhere other than wordpress and vet the code
Watch the notifications in Webmaster Tools to spot anyone else getting verified for your domains.

Back at the start of the year I made some goals public for this year and here we are mid way through and I decided to look at how I was doing.

I started writing this post by the side of the pool in San Diego and now I am sitting in a Starbucks in blazing Las Vegas 3 weeks into a vacation experiment with a week left to go and a 10 hour drive to SES San Fran ahead of me through Death Valley.

Here were my goals for this year: -

1. Sell my flat to nearly clear my main mortgage (1st / 2nd Qtr)
2. Get Kerboo to 500 customers
3. Make 80% of my income location independent

Updates: -

1. Flat Sale – cash price agreed, sales going through in the next few weeks. Will use that cash to clear almost all the mortgage on our main house.

2. Kerboo continues its steady growth, not quite at the 500 yet but we are about to launch v3 and open the floodgates.

3. Make 80% of my income location independent.

Done… I have a team assembled via oDesk and working well, I have someone in the UK who manages a variety of tasks for me.

I thought when we set off on this trip that managing all that remotely would be a chore, I have been surprised with how smoothly it has gone. Sure there are a few lessons I have learnt that I will be taking back but I have learnt that as long as I set time and have Wifi I can run my business from anywhere in the world.

OK enough typing, Vegas for another day then off into the desert towards San Fran…

After having a discussion with Matt Davies and others on Twitter today it became clear that many SEO’s are now getting increasingly frustrated by the way large brands can buy links without care whereas smaller brands get toasted.

The sad truth is that if you are a large brand you can really do whatever you like to manipulate the index as Google have to include you.

Google cant remove large brands as the average searcher will not think
“Ahh I cant find brand X, they must have been doing something naughty”

They will think
“Where the hell is brand X? Google has gone really shit!”

Sure they will occasionally do a token penalty for a few days but that action is aimed at making us SEO’s think twice about doing paid.

Does it make me think twice?
No

Does it make me angry?
Yes

Shaun over at Hobo has posted a great blog post about why outing isn’t a great idea for us in SEO too

Who is to blame?

The sad reality is that unless we are working with a big brand we have to be more careful. The truth is though that the only people who are reporting and outing sites are other SEO’s and Google ignores us….

The only chance you have to get banned is if you manage to get a staff member of Google pissed off or you do enough really bad crap that an algo penalty gets tripped.

Carry on… Nothing to see here…

Not me Guv….

They said that they had an automated system where all they had to do to deploy a site was FTP up a few files and folders to each host they used.

However the system they designed required them to also create a cron job on each host. This was A: Slowing them down and B: Some hosts dont allow it

Well here is a simple and easy solution to it for anyone who needs one: -

Create a page on your main site (hidden or behind some sort of protection) where it contains a number of IFRAMES
Each of these IFRAMES contains the page you would have called from the cron on the remote site
Then create a cron job on your central site to load the page with the IFRAMES in it.

Simple really

This post is going to be pretty unusual for me and may well annoy many people but its a lazy Sunday morning and following a few conversations I have had this week I thought I would explain the theory behind building a scalable and distributed link network.

Sound useful? OK well settle in this is going to be a long and rambling stream of thoughts

OK so before we start lets lay out why and what we are looking to achieve here. If you take a look at the link profiles of any competing set of sites its almost always obvious that if they compete on terms beyond the home page they will be doing this from some manipulation of the anchor text pointing at their internal pages.

To manipulate this internal anchor text you need to be able to control what text people use when linking into your site and this means we have to: -

A: Find places that allow us to control the anchor text
B: Buy links
C: Have lots of sites under our control

Now sites that allow us to control the anchor text are either hard to come by or easy for any search algo to discount.
Buying links is costly and frowned upon (Ohh grow up its Googles fault you have to do it so get on with it )
Having lots of sites under your control is obviously a better option (We will do the maths as we go to show you that)

So how would one go about building a network of sites that we can have under our control?

Funny you should ask, I will share how I would do it (Not that I do this sort of thing

GOLDEN RULE
We DO NOT want any of these sites to be traced back to us in any way either detectable by the search engines algo OR by the manual spam teams

We are going to be able to control everything about these sites from our central control panel.
We are going to utilise very cheap hosting
We are going to outsource the content creation

Lets get started
We will first need to create a database on our central server

We need this database as we are going to send all the content out to the remote sites in our network as each page is called on the remote server. This will allow us to have complete control over hundreds or thousands of sites without having to log in and out or maintain CMS’s across lots of remote hosting accounts.

Here are the fields youll need for each table
First the table that holds our content for the sites
content_tb
This is the table that will hold our content for each page on the site

SiteID
SiteURL
Pagename
Pagetitle
Pagemetadesc (optional)
Pageh1
PageHTML
Datecreated
Live (y/n)
RedirectionType
RedirectionDestination

site_db
This table holds our sites and allows us to know when each one is due for renewal and also what fake whois we used to reg them with (Come on grow up )

SiteID
SiteURL
RegDate
ExpDate
WhoisName
WhoisAd1
WhoisAd2
etc
HostingCo
Costpermonth
Paidby
ftphost
ftpuser
ftppass

links_db
SiteID
Textmatch
LinkReplace
Live (y/n)

templates_db
siteid
templateid
templatecontent

OK you get the idea here – we are creating a database that will hold all our remote site details and also act as a database of the content on these sites as well as the links we will insert into them.

So now what we need to do is to get some sites.
We can buy some if you like or we can register some. Bear in mind though that if we reg some then this will become a longer term plan than buying them.
If you are registering them then please also make sure you give fake info for the whois (ON EACH DOMAIN) we do not want all the network to be traced back to us via who owns the damn things. It is fine if you want to register using the same credit card as this isnt public information (Unless there is a court case one day but thats not going to happen again…)

We will also want to potentially vary the registrar we use but thats more for paranoia reasons than practicality.

So lets assume you now have a bunch of domains we can use and you have added their details to the database. NB The database will be held on our central control site (Dont make this the same as your main domain, some site that is anonymous is great – think of it like a fake shop front on a gang bosses hideout)

Now we need somewhere to host them. We are going to use very cheap hosting. This makes our cost base low but means we will have to be creative on how we serve the sites.

Heres a search for cheap hosting on G

Loads of companies with prices like £5 a year or £1 a month. Most of these will be fine for us.

The minimum requirement for us is that the hosting deal we buy for each must be capable of: -

PHP
.htaccess
FTP access
Ability to call a remote file by file_get_contents (we have other options but…)

Most hosts will allow that lot though.

Got that? OK we are ready to go!

On each remote site we will be uploading one index.php file and a .htaccess file.
The index.php file will be our ‘handler’ and will respond to and deal with every request the remote site gets. The .htaccess will give the index.php file the ability to do that.

The way the flow works is this: -
Visitor comes to someremotesite1234.com
They request someremotesite1234.com/about_our_company.html
The .htaccess steps in and tells the server that index.php handles all requests for pages on this site.
The index.php page takes the full url and passes the domain and page to the central content server on our secret domain.
It passes: -
someremotesite1234.com
about_our_company.html

Now the central site takes over and pulls from the central DB: -
The content for this page and passes it through the link functions on the central server that will parse the content and add any links we specify centrally for this page.
Its also checks and finds the template that we use for the someremotesite1234.com domain and puts the content into this template.

The central site then returns all this as a finished page to the remote site that serves the page to the user.

Phew – still here?
That may sound very confusing but it really isnt if you have been doing this type of thing for a while. Bear with me and we might have an opportunity later to learn in more detail, for now this is just an outline of the system anyway.

So you may have noticed that we passed the content for this page on the central server through some functions that added the links if we had any.

The way that works the total string of content we had for the page requested is passed to a function that looks in the links table and checks for any text that matches a record in there.

So on our example the about_our_company.html page may have a paragraph like: -

At Johnson Brothers we have been serving the Coventry area for nearly 30 years, providing excellent customer service for anyone looking for holiday insurance. Contact us today if you would like us to arrange a quote.

This gets passed to the links function and it looks to see if it has any matches
In the links table we have specified that if on this page we see “for holiday insurance. ” we replace it with

This allows us to control all the content AND all the links for these remote sites through one central site.

The template simply allows us to create the site templates and layouts on our central server and therefore always only upload one standard index.php file to any new sites we create.

All that happens with the templates is when the page is called it also calls the template which looks a little like: -

And then the template functions simply replace the tokens @@token@@ with the content from the DB (Sidebar is just a loop through all the pages we have for this domain)

This way we can have a unique template for every site (NOT JUST UNIQUE CSS FFS) and we can project all coding styles – so we can have sites that look like they are wordpress powered, sites that are table based, sites that are plain css.

OK so thats the real basics of how we serve the pages.

How do we get the content?
We outsource it of course, we pay for paraphrased content.
Its important to note that these sites arent intended to rank well on their own and we arent creating content for traffic reasons we are merely creating content for the purposes of having a real looking organic site that will get indexed and can provide us with a link.

So we might have sites that talk about hobbies, pets, holiday guides, fake engineering companies, fake organisations etc etc

We will link build to the network as well as we go from sites NOT in the network itself.

RULES
Do not create sites with the same whois
Do not create sites on the same host
Do not create sites too close to any other site
Unique template on each domain
Unique content on each page
Do not interlink (If you do know what you are doing)
Do NOT leave footprints

Footprints are any way in which the search teams or algo can tie your network together.
Don’t put the same analytics on each domain (If you add Google analytics to any of these I will personally come round and shake you)
Don’t re-use the same templates
Don’t add the same structure or footer info

Trust me once you have had several thousand sites burnt all at once by Googles spam team youll learn that lesson.

Don’t add lots of links to each site

Bear in mind that it probably costs you somewhere north of £40 to place a paid link with a site and often this level of links means you get something on a sidebar or footer or added in a way that is easy for the search engines to detect and kill.

If you control it all you get links in the BODY of the content on sites that arent likely to be found easily and shouldnt be able to be tied together easily by the search teams.

Its also worth noting that the cost of these links is approx: -
Hosting / Year = £7.50
Domain / Year = £7.00
Content / Site = £15.00
Updates and Mngmnt = £ 5.00

£34.50 ish total per site

I am thinking of arranging a chat session somewhere for this if anyone wants to learn it in more detail.

Happy spamming.

Someone asked me today at a client whether they could allow their sales and marketing people to watch the web stats in real time as they sent out their latest email broadcast.

So what we set up was a nice big plasma screen in the meeting room, a buffet lunch and Get Clicky on the plasma live.

GetClicky for those who don’t know it is a fantastic and very accessible web analytics service that allows you to put the power of analytics in the hands of the people who use it.

One great feature in Get Clicky is the ‘Spy’ feature. This allows you to see in real time as people hit the site.

As Clicky is so friendly to view and tries to resolve the IP of the visitor to the company who owns it we could often clearly see a known customer or prospect coming into the site from the email and watch them as they browsed the site.

One sales guy even stopped eating the buffet to run and get a pad to take notes of a prospect browsing slowly through products he didn’t even know they used.

See the panel on Automating Twitter
