Well this one had me stumped.

A message with a zip file attachment was blocked and held in the Mailscanner quarantine.

Going into the Mailwatch system, and releasing it - it immediately gets blocked and quarantined again.

So - whitelist the sender - still gets blocked. You can see the ‘WL’ above showing that it’s whitelisted, but still blocked as ‘Bad Content’.

Check the Mailscanner conf files - all looks ok - still gets blocked.

Turns out that in my Mailscanner.conf, the settings for archives.filename and archives.filetype point direct to the relevant archives.rules.conf:

Archives: Filename Rules = %etc-dir%/archives.filename.rules.conf
Archives: Filetype Rules = %etc-dir%/archives.filetype.rules.conf

For standard Filename and Filetype Rules - it’s different:

Filename Rules = %rules-dir%/filename.rules.rules
Filetype Rules = %rules-dir%/filetype.rules.rules

These two rules files, differentiate between messages from the localhost/postmaster and other addresses.

There were no such options for the Archive filename and filentype - so here’s the changes I made:

In Mailscanner.conf:

Archives: Filename Rules = %rules-dir%/archives.filename.rules.rules
Archives: Filetype Rules = %rules-dir%/archives.filetype.rules.rules

In %rules-dir%/archives.filename.rules.rules:

Send the localhost/postmaster to %etc-dir%/archives.filename.no.rules.conf
Send the default to the original %etc-dir%/archives.filename.rules.conf

In %rules-dir%/archives.filetype.rules.rules:

Send the localhost/postmaster to %etc-dir%/archives.filetype.no.rules.conf
Send the default to the original %etc-dir%/archives.filetype.rules.conf

The rules files are the originals, the no.rules files simply contain:

allow . - -

hope this helps you solve the problem of retrieving quarantined files with attachments from Mailscanner.

cheers,

Paul.

We could even call it eco-friendly!

Basically, you just need to enable zlib in your php.ini. There are various ways to do that, a number of them through admin panels which make it very easy..

Here’s some posts which outline this and other processes for turbo charging (and ecofying (is that a new word?)) your wordpress blog:

Every now and then, my laptop needs a clean re-install. On my list of essential programs, is anti-virus. Over the past few years, I’ve gone for Norton Internet Security. It does a good job I think, even if it seems to slow my system down a bit.

Well, this morning I was chatting with my twin brother Peter (we’re supposed to be identical, so how come I’m better looking than him?)..

Peter pointed me to Microsoft’s new offering - its free anti-virus program - Microsoft Security Essentials

Hmm.. how does that compare to Norton Internet Security.. A quick search revealed some interesting updates.. It seems, that Norton still has a reputation for slowing the system down somewhat. BUT.. quite a few people swear by a few other free programs, and which seemed to have excellent feedback. The same ones cropped up again and again.

I think maybe, we might be close to the point where free anti-virus, malware and security might just do the job..

I was asked to tell more about the new book by Ben Benson I mentioned briefly in an earlier post - http://paulcoughlin.com/money-want/; how I heard about Ben, where to get a copy of the book, and more about the content itself.

This book (and his other book on the actual 7 Laws of Wealth) is available from Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com (ISBN 0956389805) or direct from Ben’s website: http://7lawsofwealth.com/million-pound-book/

I actually heard about Ben Benson from my dad, who was listening to a radio show here in the UK - Chris Evans on Radio 2

On Ben’s website, the summary of the book is:

“This is the book that everyone is talking about! Already a International Bestseller, the ‘New Rules of Wealth - Dispelling the 27 Myths of Personal Prosperity’ will guide you to question your beliefs and your relationship to money. One of the hardest barriers to deal with whilst creating wealth are the old rules and conventional wisdom that is perpetuated through our families and society.

The ‘New Rules of Wealth’ deals with these sacred cows and provides a framework to help the reader overcome old habit patterns and conditioned responses. It also addresses the biggest reasons why most people reach a level of success and never move beyond it.”

The book starts with introduction to the idea that how we think about money, directly affects our ability to create wealth. As Ben rightly points out - our beliefs about money (and our beliefs about our personal value) will be the biggest factor in determining how wealthy we are.

If you have limiting or false beliefs (which you probably have, because you are reading the book), then it will be very hard for you to become wealthy. Importantly, these beliefs are not always visible - we have deep levels within the mind where these things can hide, unseen, but still have a very powerful effect. Lots of useful real-world examples, including an explanation of the famous ‘Pygmalion Effect’.

Importantly Ben draws attention to the fact that money itself is not what matters - it’s all about our ability to fully experience life - and money can help with that. It gives us options, choices. The book sets out to be your guide as you re-evaluate and re-position your thoughts about money. Only when you let go of these limiting beliefs, can you begin to work towards achieving wealth.

Before Ben systematically covers all the myths he has come across through personal experience - you first complete an exercise which reveals what you really believe about money. There are a series of sentences about money, which Ben starts and you finish off. For example Money is _________________

Note: I have worked extensively with the likes of Bob Proctor, Paul Martinelli and completed many other coaching programs, and this still revealed some hidden negative beliefs I have about money! You absolutely must do this exercise before reading the book.

The results of the exercise will surprise you, and also show you whether you have a predominantly negative or positive view around money.

From then on, Ben goes through the top 27 individual myths, including a great quote for each, an in depth explanation of typically where the myth comes from, why it is counter-productive to believe it, and importantly - why it is indeed a myth. Cleverly, each myth is then followed with a solution, and replaced with an alternative New Rule of Wealth.

I wasn’t sure whether to actually list the myths, but I think because it won’t reveal any of the valuable book content, it should be ok. But you’ll need to read the book to get the explanation, solution and the resultant new rule!

Remember - these are MYTHS I wish I could also include the 27 New Rules of Wealth, but I think that would be giving too much away.

Well, this book is a great and easy start to getting going with Wealth Creation. Of course Ben has his other new book, The Seven Laws Of Wealth - which is not released until January 2010, but looks excellent.

I was chatting with my dad about success, and we got onto the subject of Warren Buffet and his extraordinary success.

Of course he’s know as an investor, but there are many investors - what makes him so successful?

And then I realised - it’s because Warren Buffett invests in people, not companies, not stocks, not tangible assets - but people. Before he invests, he talks to the people behind the business. And he’s developed the skill in spotting people who are a good investment, a good bet.

And if the people are a good bet, whatever they will do is also a good bet. With good people, you don’t need to know what they are involved in, you can trust them, knowing that whatever they get involved in will be an expression of them, and they will do their best to create value and success - whether or not you had invested in them.

What a smart guy.

So this, as usual, brings up the question - How Can We Use This In Our Own Life? Well, there are always the two main contexts - outside and inside.

Inside - we invest in ourselves - pursue self-development, expand you awareness, and develop your ability to ‘use’ yourself effectively.

Outside - this is all about our interaction with the world around us. For success, this is often about relationships.

I’m reminded of a poll that Marcus Buckingham mentions - he asks ‘What is the single most positive factor that contributes to a successful and long term relationship?’ - in this context it was about marriages.

After interviewing thousands of happily long-term married couples, there was one clear winner.

Was it ‘a sense of humour’? - no

Was it ‘good money management’? - no

Was it ‘good sex life’? - no

Was it ‘mutual respect’? - no

The single biggest factor - was where each partner, saw more within the other person, than that person saw within themselves.

So the husband saw more within the wife, than the wife saw within themselves.

And the wife saw more within the husband, than the husband saw within himself.

Kind of like seeing the potential within our partner, and investing in our partner and that potential, by giving to them, and the relationship and committing for the long term..

See more in other people, than they see within themselves.

This also happens to be a core component of successful coaching and counselling.

- to your success,

It’s quite good by the way. And then a few people have talked to me recently about wanting to make more money, so I’d thought I’d write about the very thing which dictates how much money we will earn:
The Law of Compensation…

So, The Law of Compensation states that the amount of money you will earn, will be in direct proportion to, and the combination of:

The Need For What You Do

Your Ability To Do It

The Difficulty There Is In Replacing You

What does this actually mean, in real terms?

All three factors are addressing this idea of ‘value’. Value itself always has a context. Putting something into a context, means connecting it to it’s surroundings in a meaningful way.

I think it was Howard Gardner (Harvard guy) who said something like “Intelligence is creating value within your cultural context”.

Your cultural context is the relationships within and around which, you will provide value. Your market and your customers

So let’s look at these three factors more closely:

1. The Need For What You Do

Is there a need for what you do? - is it big enough to provide enough opportunity to give value. And do you have access to that market, i.e. is it within your cultural context.

There could be a narrow need with fewer people, which has a higher value, or a wider need, with a lower value - as long as the need doesn’t limit your market, and you have the ability to connect to people within that market, you have this one covered.

Needs can be discovered through exploring, testing and asking.

2. Your Ability To Do It

Even though you might have identified a need, if it’s something that you’re not very good at, and there are other people who are better at it, then you can’t provide as much value as they can. If however, you are the best in the world at it, then there’s a good chance people will actively seek you out personally, and be willing to pay you a premium.

Ability can be developed through experience and training.

3. The Difficulty There is in Replacing You

This is my favourite. If you decide to provide a service that is widely available, is easy to do and requires no skill, then there will be lots of other people who can also provide that service, so you cannot stand out in terms of providing value.

If however, you provide a service that only you can provide, and it is combined with a need, and you can connect with these customers, then you have very high value. No-one else can do it. You are priceless.

The reason this is my favourite, is that it opens up the question of “What could I be the best in the world at?” - and of course the answer is being you. Only you can be you. The trick is to know who you really are, and how you can provide value which is an expression of who you are, to a market that you can reach.

We are all unique of course, and that’s no accident. If you can discover your uniqueness, you will also discover your gifts and talents - your natural abilities. When we do these things that come naturally to us, we are really expressing our uniqueness, and we feel great. The trick is to connect them to a need, and develop them so that we improve our ability. Just because they come naturally, doesn’t mean we have developed them to the level of skill and mastery.

Natural gifts, talents and abilities can be uncovered through self-exploration, coaching, mentoring etc.

Remember this is all within the context of earning money. For some people the experience of happiness comes from relationships, children, altruistic pursuits.

But if you simply want to earn more money, then learn more about and embrace the Law of Compensation. Provide high value within the context of a reachable market.

- to your success,

Paul.

p.s. Bob Proctor first introduced me to the Law of Compensation. Thank you Bob.
