Originally, Paul Dateh was only supposed to be a violinist. Beginning his violin studies at the age of four, it seemed that Dateh’s future in the classical industry was set in stone. But, on his first day at The University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, Dateh suddenly dropped his major in Violin Performance and enrolled in the Jazz Studies program instead. The move shocked his colleagues as it was hard to understand why anyone would walk away from fourteen years of classical training to begin learning an entirely new musical discipline. But, Dateh knew that he wanted to be more than just a classical musician; his goal was to become a musician, in every possible way.

Since first appearing on the music scene two years ago, singer and violinist Paul Dateh has gone on to garner millions of views on the web as well as national exposure on television and in print. Now, Dateh has teamed up with guitarist Ken Belcher to create “The Good Life” – a concept record that offers a fresh and original take on acoustic urban folk music.

“The Good Life” is a seven-song EP that follows the life of a man living out his adulthood. Classic, well-known stories of finding happiness in each moment and the search for love are presented in new ways with Dateh’s pure voice and lush string harmonies filling in the lines while Belcher punctuates each sentence with the soulful strumming of guitar.

Being fully trained in both Classical and Jazz styles, Paul Dateh & Ken Belcher’s influences are extremely diverse. Some of their influences include Bela Fleck, Stephane Grappelli, Alan & Marilyn Bergman, Stevie Wonder, and The Clientele.

In preparation for the release of “The Good Life”, Dateh and Belcher have been touring throughout the United States performing to sold-out crowds while also continuing to build a solid following online. The duo will also be making their first five-week tour in Japan starting in November.

Option 1. Create an artistic interpretation of what “love” means to you and mail it over to us. Your piece must meet a minimum size of a standard 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper, although you’re more than welcome to go larger if you like.

Send your submissions to:

Paul Dateh
P.O. Box 53685
Los Angeles, CA 90053

Please note that all submissions will become our property and will not be returned; but we will give proper credit (so make sure to include your name!). :)

Option 2. If you’d prefer to save on postage, make us a video instead! Record and upload a time-lapse video of you creating a piece of artwork that demonstrates what “love” means to you. Or, if you want to keep things simple, you can just upload a video or photo of yourself holding up a sign that shows your definition of love in one or two words.

Videos should be a maximum of 15 seconds and must be uploaded to a hosting service such as <a href="http://blip.tv"title="BlipTV" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/blip.tv');">blip.tv or <a href="http://vimeo.com"title="Vimeo" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/vimeo.com');">vimeo (make sure downloading is enabled!). Your video must also be issued under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license (so that we can have permission to use your video and also properly credit you). For more information on Creative Commons, go to <a href="http://creativecommons.org"title="Creative Commons" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/creativecommons.org');">CreativeCommons.org.

Once your video has been uploaded, email us a link to video@pauldateh.com.

Option 3. Do both options 1 and 2! :)

One last disclaimer: Because we are not the music video’s directors, we cannot promise that your submission will be included in the final video. Ultimately, it’ll be a decision for the head director to make (not us). But, we promise that we’ll do everything we can to include you!

Phew! Okay, no more rules. All that’s left to say is that we’re really excited to see the creations you all come up with, and we hope you have fun while making them!
