I've been continuously debating whether to shell out the cash to get this service. I trust the folks at Automattic and I'm pretty sure it's a great service. However, I was wondering what advantages it would provide over my current cron job solution.

My server automatically backups up databases and all files multiple times throughout the day. I store a folder of a daily backups for an 'X' number of days and another folder of weekly backups for an 'X' number of weeks.

I also periodically download a copy to my local machine. Another remote server also automatically connects to my main server and syncs the latest backup files continuously in case someone were to damage or delete the backups as well.

What do you guys think? Is VaultPress necessary for my setup?

Bravo Paul, great article. I am following you guys and hope the best for you. A lot of people need to read this, specially if they are not living in the US / CA area. Innovation is global but fundraising is a different thing in the Silicon Valley. As for the coffee, tell your mum to send you a packet of Greek Loumidis coffee (like in the YouTube video). Its healthier. Best regards and a happy new 2011 :)

Thank you for the review, I actually found this review by first discovering your company Notifo which I'm researching and thinking of trying out for alert notifications for monitoring of machines (real and virtual / cloud-based) to be sent to my iPad and Google Nexus S (I'll beta test if you need some testing). Alas, I also have a MacBook Pro 17" (mid-2009) and love it (am just about to double my RAM from 4 to 8 GB). My MBP is open and connected to a second Lenovo L220x display (both the Lenovo and the MBP are on Ergotron arms that float above my desk - works great). My only "problem" with the MacBook Pro 17 is that its high res screen is almost too much high res so I find myself sometimes squinting at text in some of the Apple UI. So I'm wondering if the new 27" ACD with its incredible resolution creates the same "problem" for people like me who find themselves squinting? Of course to overcome this I can use the Screen Zoom option with both the mouse and trackpad.

Oh do I wish that the six months that we spent mostly focused on the money hunt for iNest back in 2000 could have been used on building the business. We eventually got the B round and successfully flipped the business, but if all those trips to Silicon Valley had been customer sales calls we would have been much farther ahead of the curve

I figured it out.

go to your s3config.yml and check the folder you are point to. I was missing the initial '/'. After adding it, everything worked great.

I have a nasty habit of reading critical reviews AFTER I buy a product, and this is exactly the kind of comprehensive review I was looking for (I share the same anti-Monster bias). Like many others have mentioned, the $300 price feels high, but many other noise-cancelling products are pricey.

I recently purchased these in anticipation of a 12+ hour flight, and I was sure glad I did! These were my first set to have noise-cancelling technology, and I'm in love! (I haven't tried any other noise-cancelling sets for comparison, though). Another great feature is the unmatched comfort - I could leave these on for hours without getting irritated ears! The mute button on the side, as the author mentioned, are great for air travel (talking to attendants, and listening to captain announcements), but it's hard to imagine the feature being useful in more than a couple other situations. The folding feature, I found, was also great for traveling, and the included case protected the set while shuffling around loose in my carry-on bag.

The excessive branding is annoying, especially since I'm not a Dre fan, but otherwise I like the way they look. From my experience, the sound performance is incredible, but I have little experience with other sets; I don't find the bass overpowering like others do.

Do they feel cheap? I can't deny it, but the perceived build quality is on the same level as my roommate's Bose set - each are light plastic. The cable shielding is thick with these though, which prevents extra noise from bumping or rubbing the cable (this has been a constant problem with my previous Sony and Bose sets!).

Lastly, I'll mention the sound leakage. Yes, it begins to noticeable leak around the 40-50% volume level of my laptop. However, because these are powered 40mm drivers, 10% volume on these is the same as 25% volume on my other sets, so I will never be using them at 50% myself. Still, it would be annoying to others in quiet environments.

The bottom line:
I will not be returning these to the store. I'm sure a person could find a lot more for $300, but I like the overall style and especially the comfort of these to afford the extra. It appears that they have been slightly refined and improved since the initial release, at least. Certainly not the best purchase I've ever made, but good enough to keep.

I read this review after purchasing a pair of Studio Beats for $299 from the Apple store (gift card, don't worry, I didn't actually throw down that money myself). Here's what I love about them, awesomely comfy on the ear and since I'm a woman with a smaller head they fit nicely on my head without adjustment. The bass is amazing I must say and they are perfect for listening to music in my office. I bought them because of the noise canceling capabilities and so far I've noticed that they are able to block out wailing children on the subway among other disturbances. I haven't gone a plane with them yet, but I used to have the Bose Quiet Comfort and they were just OK. I feel like you can hear more of the intricacies of the music with the Dre Beats. I used the Bose on flights and while the background noise was reduced I wouldn't say they were amazing. We'll see how the Beats hold up on my trip in Feb. As for looks, I bought the studios in white and so far no smudging or anything. The one thing that bothers me a little is the noise leakage. You can hear these things from a mile away. I get paranoid on the train that people can hear what I'm listening to mostly because most people don't listen to Debarge on a regular basis but also because I abhor people whose earphones leak music for all to hear on quiet trains. Overall, I really like them, but I agree that if I actually had to pay for them myself I would try to find a cheaper alternative. Thanks for the review!!

Thanks for stopping by RLW - glad you enjoyed the post. Hope you'll subscribe to my blog.. It has been about 9 months since I lost most of this weight and I am still around the same weight (currently 134lbs). Actually, I had gotten so used to eating less that my stomach probably shrunk and I got fuller easier.. which can be good in the long run but I actually lost even more weight without noticing it. I got down to 128 pounds before consciously having to eat a bit more to maintain my ideal weight.

Now that I've shed the fat and I'm trying to gain muscle and have been eating an extremely high protein diet (~1.25g of protein per pound of lean body weight, which is about 150g per day for me... which is a lot of lean beef/chicken and some protein shakes) and more regular workout time.

Good to know about the Zone diet. Haven't heard about B12 shots with Atkins.. will definitely be avoiding that!

Happy New Year,
Paul

Great challenge and result! I did something very similar about 10 years ago but I did not keep it off. About two years later I started gaining it all back - mostly due to schedule and eating out more. I used the Zone (low GI, lifestyle plan) and it is really the way to go for long-term BUT like anything, you have to be disciplined. One thing I did learn though happened about three years ago. My father was talking to me about my heft and he convinced me to try the Atkins Plan. I achieved ketosis with the bad breath and the body strain/ kidney strain etc. I lost 17 lbs in a matter of about two months using it but then started reverting my food intake again and started gaining. What I did not know is that once your body experiences ketosis, there is a different storage technique it uses for regained fat molecules and it is MUCH tougher to get rid of later! So, as a post comment to the many posts I read here, the most important thing, IMO, is to follow a balanced eating plan like the Zone for life and be done with it. The denial of natural food elements like only protein is not healthy in the long run and has a nasty side-effect later potentially. Several of the female workers in my building where I work started last year with the high-potency B12 shots and the Atkins-like diet. They ALL went through the same stages, loss of color, dark circles around the eyes, dramatic weight loss, now all but one of them is big as a house! They gained it back! The eating habit must be a part of it. Although I still am way over my ideal weight now I know that the most important element is the limiting and controlled eating. I am currently 50 lbs overweight Paul but I am told I have two layers of fat - yikes!

Technically, you *can* just plug these Rokits into your computer (even the headphone jack) and they will work. I suggest using an external interface for better quality and all of that, but at the end of the day it will still work without it. Your decision.

Cheers,
Paul

Hey, thanks for the review. I just decided to buy a pair of these today to monitor sound in Final Cut Pro / Soundtrack Pro. I was originally looking for something about half the size and price, but even though I mostly do offline editing of films and the audio gets ProTooled afterwards, I've found it really helps to know where the sound is actually at to know if a take is even usable. Plus I hope to get more into the audio end of things eventually.

I actually already have a pair of good old studio monitors, a hand me down from a recording professional, but I would have to get a preamp for them. One of the things I liked about these is that you don't need a preamp! So I'm a bit disappointed about the need for an external interface... I'm wondering if this will be necessary even if I connect the speakers to the line out of my Mac Pro (as opposed to the headphone jack). I also wonder if there's a way to connect to the S/PDIF output on the MacPro... I suppose that means I need a DAC of some sort. It just seems that most of the external interfaces suggested are more expensive and have more bells and whistles than I really need (like mic inputs).
