Somethin’ to Du: Go to First Ave’s annual ‘Mats Tribute

You know that for the past three years First Ave has hosted a ‘Mats tribute concert that benefits Twin Cities Music Community Trust, right? And for the past three years we’ve been able to giveaway tickets to lucky PaulWesterberg.net readers. This year is no different. What is different? This year they’ll be paying tribute to ol’ Sorry Ma Forgot to Take Out the Trash, which. . . hang on to your hearing aids and canes. . . turned 30 in August.

Westerberg makes “Bastards”-like cameo in Glen Campbell video

“Westerberg — who has been out of the public eye for about five years now and famously didn’t appear in the Replacements’ video for “Bastards of Young” — makes a surprising yet typically coy cameo appearance in the video for the title track of Campbell’s acclaimed new album, “Ghost on the Canvas.” The video actually starts off as a direct homage to and/or imitation of the classic “Bastards” clip, with Westerberg playing the part of the dude loafing on the couch staring at the stereo speaker. Paul reappears throughout, too (though not as part of the weirdly hip, young band behind Campbell). The Minneapolis music legend’s involvement makes sense (sort of) if you know that he wrote the “Ghost” song for Campbell. And if you’re a fan, you should know it right away upon hearing the song — classic Westerberg”.

In case you missed this yesterday (like I did), The Village Voice has a nice little Q&A with Paul about that new Glen Campbell record. It includes this little tidbit. I, for one, would still buy a Paul Westerberg record.

As far as the grown-ups go, are you thinking of putting out a proper solo album again, or have you had it with the industry?

I’m always writing and I have plenty of songs, but I think the Glen Campbell record is a bit of a test to see if people still buy records. Or go for my stuff. I’d like to go on record and say something concrete, but I can’t. So, we shall see.

Mats reunion? Maybe. Mats box set? Most certainly…

While a reunion may be unlikely in the near future, Westerberg has spent a lot of time recently combing through his past for a planned box set. “On a whim I got to dig through some old tapes,” he says. “I found one song I never put on anything for people to hear. Then I dug deeper and found the original ‘Good Day’ [from his 1996 solo LP Eventually]. That pretty much stunned me. I have to close this box set pretty soon because this could take the rest of my life just going through all these things and going, ‘God, why was that there.’”

What’s the weirdest thing you two(TS an PW) ever did together?

“One night we were in L.A., staying at the Hyatt on Sunset Boulevard. As a dare, we told this cab driver we’d give him a hundred bucks to drive us backwards all the way to Small’s, which was a bar on Gower and Melrose. He actually did it! He went down Sunset, crossed down Fountain, the entire way in reverse.  I don’t know how we didn’t get pulled over by the cops, but it was funny  as shit”.
