Shipping Changes

We quietly changed our shipping options this month. We've limited shipping to United States and Canada following the postage increases set by the United States Postal Service. This happens every year, however the additional challenge of USPS handing off our goods to local postal services in other countries has proven to be a higher risk than we would like. Unable to provide tracking numbers, shockingly steep customs fees, lengthy shipping times, and lost packages are simply not fair to us or our customers. We have loved all of our international customers and will continue to brainstorm better options for the future.

National Stationery Show

You may have noticed that it's been a little quiet around here. That's because we've been gearing up for the upcoming National Stationery Show. We've reworked our packaging, branding, website, collateral, product shots, etc. and we're finally ready to share it with you! We're debuting at the 2012 NSS, May 20-23 at the Jacob Javits Center in NY. If you're attending, stop by and visit us at booth #1570. We'll be giving away some product samples!

We have three new international retailers to tell you about! Dilly Dally Kids is an adorable toy store in Vancouver that is now stocking some of our favorite onesies. Check out their cute shop below. Ella Eco in Sydney is pretty much stocking our entire line including tea towels, pillow covers, totes, cards, onesies, and more. And Orphan Socks, a beautiful, new online retailer in the Netherlands, now has a sizeable stash of our greeting cards. Thanks Claire, Elinor, and Eva! studio notes

We're away from the studio this week to conduct a bit of house surgery on a flooded basement. We will be back fulfilling orders Tuesday, September 20th.

Thanks to Julie at Remodelista for featuring our tea towels this week! We're running low on some of the patterns, but we will be restocking when we return.

And thanks to Amy and Anna at EcoSalon for inviting us to be a part of the (Sustainable) Fashion's Night Out gift bag this week at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn. We wish we could have been there!

You may have noticed that things are looking a bit different around here. We've been redesigning our shop website! There are still some things that need to be tweaked, BUT we're pretty proud of how it looks now. Our goal was to minimize wherever possible. We'd love to hear what you think. What works? ... but not powerless. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who was affected by Hurricane Irene. Our families and homes are safe, but Irene has left our studio inaccessible and without power. We will be shipping orders out as soon as power returns and the roads are passable. The power company estimates 5-10 days, but we hope it will be sooner. Rena's latest venture is providing retail strategy services to creative entrepreneurs from designers to shop owners. Her blog is unique and particularly valuable because it is full of inside advice from the perspective of an actual shop owner. (She co-founded Rare Device in San Francisco.) Rena is currently off frolicking in Asia, so she organized an impressive line up of guest bloggers to fill in for her. We were thrilled to have been asked to join in alongside so many bloggers, makers, and thinkers that we have long admired. Thanks Rena!

Our onesies, notebooks, and linen pillow covers are now available at The Vitrine, a wonderfully curated online deign shop bursting with beautiful objects from independent designers! Vitrine is a glassed-in cabinet or display case for displaying delicate or valuable articles such as objets d'art or merchandise in a shop, museum, or house. You can find our products here.

And if you're in San Diego, you can see some of our pieces in person at Product Porch! Product Porch is a 6-month experimental retail collaboration between Specific Merchandise and The Vitrine at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Blaire Dessent & Brooks Hudson Thomas are taking over the MCASD museum shop in the Downtown MCASD location at 1001 Kettner Blvd. throughout the run of the exhibition Phenomenal, which will be on view through January 22, 2012.

We've added a destash section to our Etsy shop. All of the items are new and unused. Some items are materials from products we tested out but decided not to carry, while others are simply supplies from discontinued items. For most listings, larger quantities are available so just let us know if you like a different amount and we will set up a custom listing for you. The floursack towels are already sold out, but stay tuned for new items in the near future.

We recently received a copy of Creative Calendar Collection created by Basheer Graphic Books out of Singapore. We're thrilled to see our very first calendar next to the work of so many of our favorite designers and we're excited to be a part of a publication out of Singapore where we grew up! Many thanks to Euphemia Toong for finding us and for her wonderful communication. Below are a few shots of the book, including ours and a couple stunning designs that we hadn't seen before. I'm not sure if this edition is still available for purchase, but it looks like you can find the current one here.

Check it out, we finally have a catalog!

It may not look like much to you, but it's taken us months to put together. We had convinced ourselves that we would work on our catalog after we finished developing the next idea ... or after we took some new product shots ... or after we restocked something that sold out ... or ... you get the idea. We were building up an outdated notion that it had to be this uber final document. We were treating the catalog like our products which have to be complete and consistent, instead of like our website which is continuously updated and evolving. We're not going to a trade show tomorrow. We're not printing physical copies of the thing. No one else knows what we have or don't have up our sleeves, so no one can know what is missing from it. Yeah, it all seems so obvious now.

Working on the catalog in combination with our wholesale policies and order forms has forced us to think about our production and branding and taking the next step. We have lots of ideas for the future, so hopefully our catalog will be updated and improved frequently. In the meantime, your constructive criticism is most welcome and if you're a shop interested in carry our goods, email us for those forms!
