Happy Wordless Wednesday everyone! Today's post is *mostly* wordless with a bit of cheeping.

I found these baby cardinals in a nest inside a hanging basket at the nursery.

Me and my all time favorite doggy patient.

If you didn't know already, I was a vet tech for 5 years before I started Pawsitively Pets. I do still consider myself a vet tech, although I'm currently not employed as one. It's what I went to college to do and I still believe that's where I will end up again one day.

Vet techs are like nurses, but only for pets and animals. We do all kinds of things! We are nurses, anesthesiologists, x-ray technicians, phlebotomists, laboratory technicians, dental hygienists, janitors, dog walkers, mentors, teachers, surgical technicians, pharmacy technicians, receptionists, animal handlers and more all rolled into one job description! I'm sure I left something out, but you should get the idea.

I thought it would be neat to share some of the cool things I've done during my time as a vet tech. I realize that not everyone is going to think some of these things on the list are "neat", but people who work in the field of veterinary medicine have a certain type of appreciation for them that only we can understand...
There are several different styles of cat carriers to pick from. After writing about why you need to take your cat to the vet in a carrier, I thought it might be helpful if I shared some of the best cat carrier styles available.

The most important thing to remember when choosing a carrier for your cat is to pick something that suits your needs and your price range. Here are some of the best cat carrier styles to choose from.

Soft Carriers

These carriers are nice for a few reasons. They aren't bulky or heavy which makes them easy to carry. They also usually come with a shoulder strap which is also great for easy transport. Since soft cat carriers aren't bulky, they are easier to store and take up less space. They usually have plenty of openings, which can make removing a cat easier.

Soft cat carrier.
Photo via greekgeek

In the past, I emailed a few rescue groups asking about it but never received any response. I'm sure they're busy and have their hands full with other things.

Then I started seeing a blog hop that is hosted by Dogs N Paws that supports pet adoption. I've decided to turn my "Spotlight Sunday" into an adoptable pet day. I haven't really done Spotlight Sunday in... well, forever but it's been on my blog "schedule" almost since I started blogging.

Anyways, I'd also like to thank Brian and his dad from Brian's Home for giving me some advice about sharing adoptable pets on my blog. So, without further adieu here is my very first featured adoptable pet - Angie!
If you're at BlogPaws, I hope you're having a fantastic time and can't wait to hear all about it! Most of you know that I wasn't able to make it this first year of blogging, but maybe next time.

Anyways, on to this edition of Social Pet Saturday. If you don't know what this segment is about, it's just a collection of stuff I've found in the last week that I have found interesting, funny, cute... you get the idea. I've got a big collection of cool stuff for this week's post!

Cute Puppies Alert

Quite recently, I've come across three awesome blogs that star puppies! These guys are new furry bloggers and I'm sure they'd appreciate it if you stopped by and said hello.

First is Alfie, a precious beagle puppy who lives in the UK. He graciously awarded Pawsitively Pets with the Sunshine Award this week and says the following about the blogs he passed the award onto:

"All the blogs I have chosen are ones who inspired me to start Life as Alfie so I would like to thank them!"

In that article, I briefly mentioned that it's undesirable for female birds to be egg layers and many readers wondered why this was the case. Well, I have the answer for you - it's called egg binding. Egg binding in pet birds is a very serious and sometimes even fatal condition.

Photo via Brian Legate

I'd like to tell you what exactly egg binding is, the symptoms to watch for, treatments, and how to prevent your female bird from laying eggs. I do realize that chickens are meant to lay eggs, so the prevention portion of this article is not meant for them. Chickens can also become egg bound, however.

Photo via maplegirlie

It's been awhile since I did a veterinary medical terminology 101 post, so here we are today. I recently thought up another interesting terminology word. The word is "crypt-" or "crypto-". I'm not talking about a scary cemetery or Superman's weakness. Here is the definition of today's word, crypto-:

"A combining form meaning secret or hidden. It is used in the formation of compound words."

Basically, it's something called a "prefix". A piece of a word you place with another word to make a completely new word. Hopefully, you followed all of that. The most common way this prefix is used in veterinary medicine is to describe a condition in male dogs called cryptorchidism. This is pronounced "kript - or - kid - iz - m".

Photo via shimown

In the past, I've shared a lot of interesting noises that pets make. So far, I've shared a crabbing sugar glider and a hissing hedgehog. Today, I wanted to share some guinea noises. Yep, guinea pigs are not silent creatures and can actually make a lot of noise. Guess they have a lot to say!

This first noise is commonly called a "wheek", because that's kind of what it sounds like. The guinea pig in this video is wheeking because he's excited about getting some tasty bell pepper to eat. We used to make guinea pigs make this noise a lot at the vet's office when we were doing things to them that they didn't appreciate. Of course, it was more of a distressed and shrieking wheek at the vet's office.

I know most of you consider your dogs to be your children and hope you are celebrating this weekend with them.

Today, I want to share something special I received from For Love of a Dog Jewelry. Last month was Jeffie the Dog's birthday from the Talking Dogs Blog. In honor of his birthday, his mom +Sue Kottwitz held a month-long birthday party with lots of fun games and prizes. I was lucky enough to win a pair of earrings handmade by Sue.

My super cute dog mom earrings!

I know that many people don't have human children, but rather look as their pets as their kids. Chocolate covered strawberries are a favorite treat for moms on Mother's Day, but unfortunately can't be shared with the family pets because it's toxic to them. I recently found a great alternative treat that dog moms can share with their pooches and decided to give it a try.

These treats are frozen yogurt dipped strawberries. Perfect snacks for moms and their furry kids! I wanted to give these a try because they look delicious, Shiner loves strawberries, and I thought they'd be a great snack for my own teething baby human. Here's what I did -

You only need 2 ingredients to make these treats - Plain Yogurt (nonfat is best if your sharing with your pooch) and strawberries. You'll also need some parchment or wax paper too.

Only 2 ingredients needed - strawberries and plain yogurt.

I was lucky enough to win a very awesome product from my friends Cody and Caren over at Cat Chat not too long ago. What is the product you ask? The World's Best Cat Litter! No really - that's what it's called. Cody is a CATvocate for World's Best Cat Litter. So is it true? Is it really the world's best cat litter?

Forest scented clumping litter from Word's Best Cat Litter.

I got to test out this cat litter with Honey Delite - if you haven't acquainted yourself with her yet, you can do so here. Keep in mind that I know very little about Honey Delite still, although I am so very glad that she has really started to come around. I was fairly certain that Baby Frosty did not use the cat litter because she was spending more of her time outdoors before she passed. (Again, thank you everyone who left kind words after her passing. I really appreciate it.)

Hope you're able to have a nice tasty margarita or perhaps a tasty taco at some point today. For those of you who aren't really sure what Cinco de Mayo is, it literally means "5th of May" in Spanish. It is celebrated in Mexico and the US on the same day that the Battle of Puebla took place on May 5, 1862. The Mexican army won the battle against the French who were going to invade Mexico City. This day celebrates that victory, even though the French eventually did go ahead and make it to Mexico City later on. The Battle of Puebla is remembered as a victory that was won against all the odds. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day.

Here in Texas where I live, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated quite a bit. Mostly with some margaritas and tasty Mexican food - who doesn't love that? I am not hispanic but my boyfriend as well as my 2 children are, so we like to do some fun stuff for Cinco de Mayo. Of course, you don't have to be hispanic or Mexican to celebrate!

I decided to make some of those pretty Mexican paper flowers with Lily over the weekend. Then I got the idea to put one on Shiner's collar. I'm going to show you how you can make your own pretty paper flower for your dog's collar. That way, they can look extra festive on Cinco de Mayo!

You'll need some tissue paper, scissors, and green pipe cleaners. I usually have an abundance of different colored tissue paper from birthday parties and Christmas.
First of all though, I'd like to give a VERY big thank you to everyone who stopped by and left kind comments on my post about Baby Frosty's passing away. I am fine, as I can admit that I was not attached to her, but the feeling of guilt was there after the event. I know her life would have ended at the shelter, and am happy I could have tried to give her a little more time. Even if it wasn't for very long. So anyways, thank you everyone. I really do appreciate it.

So now on to more pleasant things. Let's start the mood off with the stuff that is sure to make you smile. :)

Cutest Video EVER!

If you're following Remy over at One Blue Dog, (If not you should be!) you probably saw the absolute cutest video ever earlier last week. Remy's been trying to get his kitty brofurs to like him, and guess what - they finally do! Well, Linus does anyways. You seriously have to go and watch the video for yourself.

Lately, I’ve been reading a lot of articles about bloat
prevention. Were you aware that there is actually a surgical procedure for
bloat prevention in dogs? It’s called a “gastropexy”. But first, let’s make
sure you’re aware of what bloat is. Bloat or Gastric Dilatation/Volvulus (GDV),
is a life-threatening condition with a very quick onset. It’s considered a
medical emergency.

During an episode of bloat, a dog’ stomach distends with gas and
fluid during dilatation. During volvulus, the stomach rotates on itself. The
junction at the stomach and esophagus is pinched off as well as the pylorus.
This makes it impossible for the gas and fluid in the stomach to escape from
either end. All the contents of the stomach begin to ferment and build up
pressure. Also, since the stomach is twisted at both ends this cuts off blood
circulation causing necrosis.

Lily as a baby.

Almost 10 years ago exactly, I found my dog - Shiner. I am not sure if I should call it an adoption or a rescue, but I literally did find her tied up in an alley. You can read the full story here if you want. Anyways, about a year later I became pregnant with my first daughter, Lily. Another nine months later she was born.

I want to share my experience of what happens to the family dog after a baby comes into the picture. So many dogs and other pets end up at shelters because their owners don't find them compatible with the new family lifestyle.

Will the Dog be Forgotten?

My answer to this question is no. Shiner was my first child and yes I treated her like one. She was the first dog I parented as an adult. So what happened with Shiner after my daughter was born? Did I throw her out in the yard and forget to feed her? Of course not!

I did have a different post ready for today, but after I prepared it I discovered some bad news. I went out to check on the barn cats and as I was walking in the yard I came across Baby Frosty under one of the plant trailers. She had passed away.

I have been concerned about her because after my last update here, I think that I saw her maybe once about 2 weeks ago and that was only for a brief moment before she ran off. I believe she passed away maybe 2 or 3 days ago but I have no idea why. I do feel bad - guilty even - about her death and really wish I was able to have given her better.

RIP Baby Frosty

On the bright side, Honey Delite, the other barn cat is thriving and doing really well. I hope to give you an update on her next week.

Does your cat hate their carrier? Probably, but it's still really important that you use one when you're transporting them somewhere. Specifically, the veterinarian's office. It's also a pet peeve of veterinary staff when people bring their cats in without a carrier. Transporting a cat in a carrier is mostly for their own safety, although the cats might disagree with us there... There are several reasons why you need to take your cat to the vet in a carrier - here are some of the most important.

Shiner and I have both had some fun features on other website in the past couple of weeks. Note: This post was published on my WP blog previously, some of you may have already read it.
No, this post is probably not what you had in mind. It’s
not always easy to tell the sex of your pet bird just by looking at them. In
some species of birds, males and females look just the same. I’m going to tell
you how to sex your bird. That is, differentiate between male and female. There
are a few ways to do this, depending on the species of the bird. Here are a few
examples.
Sexually Dimorphic Birds - How to Sex Your Bird Using Physical Differences

Sexual
dimorphism is -

“Distinct
difference in size or appearance between the sexes of an animal.”

Many birds
are not sexually dimorphic, meaning that the male and female look the same and
have no real physical differences as far as appearance is concerned. If your
bird is not a sexually dimorphic species, then you will need to learn how to
sex your bird by different means which I will list below. Here is a list of
birds that have distinct differences between males and females.

Parakeets

Adult male
parakeets and female parakeets can typically be identified by the color of
their cere. A cere is the band just above a birds beak where their nostrils are
found. A female’s cere is usually brown or tan. Sometimes, a female parakeet
will have a slightly crusty cere.

Male
parakeets have a blue cere. Although, it can be hard in some cases to tell the
difference between the two because the ceres sometimes appear as a pinkish and
bluish iridescent color.
