Today was nuts, right?
Google launched a petition.  Wikipedia voted to shut itself off.  Senators’ websites went down just from the sheer surge of voters trying to write them.   NYC and SF geeks had protests that packed city blocks.

You made history today: nothing like this has ever happened before.  Tech companies and users teamed up.  Tens of millions of people who make the internet what it is joined together to defend their freedoms.  The free network defended itself.  Whatever you call it, the bottom line is clear: from today forward, it will be much harder to mess up the internet.

 
The really crazy part?  We might even win.
Approaching Monday’s crucial Senate vote there are now 35 Senators publicly opposing PIPA.  Last week there were 5.   And it just takes just 41 solid “no” votes to permanently stall PIPA (and SOPA) in the Senate.  What seemed like miles away a few weeks ago is now within reach.

 
But don’t trust predictions.  The forces behind SOPA & PIPA (mostly movie companies) can make small changes to these bills until they know they have the votes to pass.  Members of Congress know SOPA & PIPA are unpopular, but they don’t understand why–so they’re easily duped by superficial changes.  The Senate returns next week, and the next few days are critical.  Here are two things to think about:
1. Plan on calling your Senator every day next week.  Pick up the phone each morning and call your Senators’ offices, until they vote “no” on cloture.  If your site participated today, consider running a “Call the Senate” link all next week.

2. Tomorrow, drop in at your Senators’ district offices.  We don’t have a cool map widget to show you the offices nearest you (we’re too exhausted! any takers?).  So do it the old fashioned way: use Google, or the phonebook to find the address, and just walk in, say you oppose PIPA, and urge the Senator to vote “no” on cloture.  These drop-in visits make our spectacular online protests more tangible and credible.

As expected Yahoo will be closing down Yahoo Site Explorer this year. Yahoo has just announced the date for the closure. This coming Monday, November 21, 2011, Site Explorer will cease to exist.

The short Yahoo blog post reads:

With the completion of algorithmic transition to Bing, Yahoo! Search has merged Site Explorer into Bing Webmaster Tools. Webmasters should now be using the Bing Webmaster Tools to ensure that their websites continue to get high quality organic search traffic from Bing and Yahoo!. Site Explorer services will not be available from November 21, 2011.

 

Bing Webmaster Tools has much of this information, with the big exception of competitive linkage data, which is a huge exception.

There are third party tools including Majestic SEO and SEOmoz but with the loss of Site Explorer, there will likely be no search engine-provided look at your back links.

If you are a Google+ user who wants to put your posts there and on Twitter and/or Facebook, the tool for you is Publish Sync: a Chrome-only extension. There are not many options for cross-posting your updates to Google+ as well as the other social networking services. This one seems to do the job. You will only be able to use it in Google’s Chrome web browser, however.

You can download the extension from the Chrome web store and install it in your browser. It places an icon in the toolbar that looks like a vine with two leaves. Click on the icon and it provides four services, which can accept Publish Sync content – Facebook, Google+, Twitter and the lesser known Plurk (see image below). At the bottom of the drop down box are buttons for sharing the page you are currently viewing in the browser. You can share a link or Like it on Facebook or give it a +1 on Google+, which is the equivalent of a Facebook Like. You can also invite other Facebook friends to use the extension.

Set up the app by clicking on one of the four service buttons. You will either log into that service and authorize the app, or if already logged in, just allow Publish Sync access to your account by authorizing it. Then go to one of the services and type in an update you want posted. You will see below the box where you add the update check boxes for the other services. Select the ones you want to cross-post the update to and it sends them on to that service when you send out the post. Below is an example of how it looks on the Twitter site.

At the time I wrote this the Facebook integration was not working. I clicked on Facebook and the link opened a tab that said, “Please try again later.” I’m guessing it is either blocked or overloaded right now. Hopefully the developer will get this fixed or traffic will slow down making it possible again.

It would be nice if this extension allowed me to type a post in the address bar and click the button to cross-post to all the selected services. Other Twitter Chrome extensions let you do this so I know it is possible. I’d also like to be able to select some text on a web page and right-click it to post the text. This is also possible since Twitter’s Mac app adds this functionality not only to Chrome, but Safari and Firefox as well.

If you’ve ever done “keyword research” for your websites, you know it’s a minefield. Unless you have a Ph.D. in keywordology, you’ll quickly be bamboozled by comparing ”visitor volume”, “seasonal trends”, “exact versus phrase match” and all the other related variables that go into finding “good” keywords to target and write articles for.

One of the easiest ways to shortcut the entire process is to search your webserver logs for the keywords that people actually USE when searching Google (or other search engines) before visiting your site. All you have to do is trawl your weblogs for these “Bonus” keywords. You can do it manually, or use software to do it automatically. I do a bit of both, with Google Analytics doing the automation for me.

When you discover a keyword that someone used to find and visit your site, it’s a great feeling. If it’s a keyword you wrote an article around, it’s proof that your SEO is working. If it’s a keyword you DIDN’T write an article around, that’s even better because it shows that Google trusts your site enough to send you traffic for a Golden keyword you didn’t actually optimise for… and now you can write an article around it to get more visits!

For example, say your main keyword is “toy electric train”, but, one day, you notice someone visited your site for the keyword, “electric model train”. When you check at Google, you’re only on page two for that keyword. How hard would it be to get more visitors for “electric model train”, when you know that, without trying, you’ve generated traffic for it from page two of Google? Pretty easy, right? That’s why I call them bonus keywords!

But now Google is starting to hide the data containing the keywords from webmasters. When people do a Google search while logged in to their Google account, the search is done at a secure page, an https request. The results of the secure search are show to the Google user as normal, and the click on the chosen search result takes them to the website they want to visit… BUT the search keyword is NOT passed to the destination web-server.

It’s estimated that about 10-12% of searches done at Google are secure ones, which doesn’t seem like a problem, until you consider what would happen if Google switched ALL searches to the secure system. All referral keyword information would be hidden resulting in webmasters losing “Bonus” keyword data, third party analytics software being unable to track “keywords to sales” and advertising platforms that display ads based on the incoming keyword searches would stop working.

So why would Google make the switch to secure searches? Well, it would be an obvious way to let everyone know (including lawmakers and regulators) that Google cares about “user privacy”. Not only cares, but is actively switching people to secure searches. Who could argue that making the switch would be a good thing? Of course, the fact that it kills “bonus keywords” and “keyword to sale tracking” for webmasters as well as certain advertising methods would be just coincidental. Interesting, Adwords ads still reveals the search query to the advertisers! I guess Google is assuming that, 1: people can tell the ads from the organic results and, 2: are happy to give up a measure of their privacy to advertisers that they’re not happy to give up to the websites appearing in the organic results. That’s quite a big assumption…

Of course, Google says that webmasters need not fear! If you use Google’s Webmaster Tools (GWT) you can, “receive an aggregated list of the top 1,000 search queries that drove traffic to their site for each of the past 30 days”. Woohoo. I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t like GWT at all. I’d much rather do my own digging through my weblogs or via Analytics than trust the “aggregate list” from GWT.

It was a quite lucrative niche within Web marketing… selling cheesy “get wealthy quick” ebooks or software (step one, download… step two, install… step three, RICHES!) working with scumbag marketing and advertising tricks including false scarcity (only 500 ever!), fake screenshots ($5,567 per day!), fake testimonials (“it was super quick to make money” Joe, Dallas) and fairly a lot spewing a stream of lies to make sales.

Sadly, mainly because human nature is what it is actually, pushing all of the emotional buttons worked, as well as the junk goods sold like hot cakes to desperate and lazy people. Many cheesy “marketers” created tiny fortunes and then, naturally sufficient, sold their “expertise” inside the type of “coaching programs” where they explained how the scam worked, giving rise to yet much more junk goods and deceptive sales letters.

Needless to say, the marketers were looking for easy ways to accept payments, and they primarily utilised Clickbank, who not only processed the credit card and paypal orders, but also provided a pool of prospective affiliates to help promote the junk products after which cut the checks to pay everyone. Possibly they just didn’t care.

So, if the marketers, affiliates and Clickbank produced cash, as well as the buyers could get refunded quickly if they so wished, where was the dilemma? Well basically, the digital marketplace suffered from the unethical advertising tactics being utilized to sell the junk goods. When a customer had bought 1 of the junk goods, I’d guess they’d be really unlikely to ever obtain anything else from Clickbank once again. Here are a few of the additions Clickbank have added to their terms and conditions for vendors to abide by. They’re successful, for all digital products, from September 1st 2011…

No False Scarcity

Yep! No extra, “only 500 copies available“, unless it is essentially accurate! Clickbank will ask on the product submission form if quantities are to be limited and will stop sales when that number is reached. They say that the same offer can be “reopened” in following 7 days. Why that is acceptable I don’t know. Surely if it is only 500 copies, then selling more in 7 days is still unacceptable? This “scarcity” rule also applies to the length of time an item is available… so no much more, “ends in 24 hours” unless it actually will end in 24 hours!

Clearly Display The Price

The digital product price needs to be displayed in size 12 font. It is not clear if Clickbank means 12-pixel or 12-points, either way they’re fairly similar, and roughly equivalent to a “normal” font size for sales copy online.

No False Discounts

A item can’t be sold as “$27, was $77?, unless is was previously sold at $77.

No “Required” Upsells/Downsells

Upsells, Downsells and One-Time-Offers have to be “enhancements” to the initial item and must not be required. The “no thanks” links have to be clearly displayed in at the least 12 font.

Limits to Upsells

No far more than three upsells (one time offers) and two exit offers for every single sales flow. Does that mean there won’t be annoying popups screaming, “wait, don’t go, here’s the same product for $10 less, for the next three buyers within the next 5 minutes!!”?

No Cheesy Advertising Phrases

… such as “one push button to make money” or “three easy words will provide you avalanche of revenue”.

No Fake Testimonials

Every little thing said about a product in a testimonial (video or written) must be “capable of substantiation” which means you have to have the ability to prove it. You should be able to offer a testimonial from the individual giving it as a signed document if requested. The FTC also needs you to have the ability to provide them with details for every individual giving a testimonial if requested.

And for affiliates…

No Fake Evaluation / Review Sites

Clickbank say, “affiliates can’t pose as neutral third parties evaluating two items so they make a commission on selling one of them.”

Conclusions

Though it’s excellent that Clickbank have lastly decided to stop merchants using unethical and deceptive advertising tactics, it is a real shame that it took them forever and appear to have only instigated these adjustments in response to pressure from “regulatory agencies”.

Hopefully, they vigorously enforce the new Terms and Conditions and attempt to claw back some credibility for their slogan, “The Web’s Most Trusted Digital Marketplace“.
