Purefoods scores 34-point rout of Rain or Shine

The Purefoods TJ Giants recorded the most lopsided win this season, outclassing cellar-dwelling Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 103-69 in the 2009-2010 KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Rico Maierhofer led the Purefoods onslaught with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 3 shotblocks. James Yap and Don Allado, who alsohad 11 rebounds, chipped in with 14 points apiece while Kerby Raymundo finished with 12.

“Our most immediate goal right now is to grab two straight wins and we could do that in our next game against Alaska on Sunday,” he added.

The Giants was merciless in their attack, outscoring the Elasto Painters 32-17 in the fourth after posting a 19-point spread at the end of three quarters.

“We grabbed 65 rebounds and they only had 35. That shows what kind of contrast in the legs the teams have,” he pointed out.

Ryan Arana paced Rain or Shine, who has now dropped to a 1-7 win-loss record, with 20 points.

Santos nets carrer-high 33; Beermen now on a six-game roll

San Miguel's Arwind Santos was again in dominant form, scoring a career-high 33 points on 13-of-18 shooting, grabbing 8 rebounds and issuig 6 assists as the Beermen pulled away for a 104-89 rout of the Barako Bull Energy Boosters for their sixth straight win in the 2009-2010 KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Dondon Hontiveros contributed 21 points while Dennis Miranda had 17 and Mike Cortez 10 for the Beermen as they continued to roll after losing their first two games.

A 16-4 run in the fourth quarter shoved the Beermen to a 90-78 lead, just over three minutes left.

“We had warned the team as early as Friday not to take any team for granted. It’s a good thing we managed to recover. I guess this is also a good lesson for us,” said SMB coach Siot Tanquingcen afterwards.

Yousif Aljamal and paolo Hubalde topscored for the Energy Boosters with 21 and 20 points, respectively. Rookie Ogie Menor, who was having a career game, was ejected in the third quarter after incurring a flagrant foul pemalty 2. He finished with 18 markers. Leo najorda and Aris Dimaunahan chipped in 10 points apiece for the Barako Bull.

Kings survive Whopper scare

The Brgy. Ginebra Kings, leading by as much as 16 points, survived a furious third quarter rally by the Burger King Whoppers to score an 83-79 victory in the 2009-2010 KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Mindanao Civic Center in Tubod, Lanao del Norte.

Enrico Villanueva scored 16 points, Cyrus Baguio 15, Ronald Tubid 14 and Eric Menk 13 for the Kings to maintain their hold of solo second spot with their fifth win in six games.

“We lost the flow, both on offense and defense, in the second half and I really don’t know why,” admitted Ginebra coach Jong Uichico. “Good thing Cyrus came up with the shot that bailed us out.”

Rookie Ronnie Matias paced the Whoppers with 12 points. Ronjay Buenafe and Richard Yee added 11 points apiece while Gary David contributed 10.

Donald Dulay scores 20 as Rain or Shine upsets Alaska

Spitfire guard Donald Dulay scored a career-high 20 points, handed out 5 assists and grabbed 4 rebounds, rescuing the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to an 86-81 upset over erstwhile unbeaten Alaska Aces in the 2009-2010 KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Yanres Center in Antipolo City.

Dulay scored 18 of his points in the fourth quarter, which started with Alaska having a 10-point lead 61-51.

The win snapped the Elasto Painters six-game losing streak as well as the Aces' six-game winning streak.

“I can’t explain everything. I can’t explain the team getting its first win at the expense of the best team in the league right now,” said Dulay.

Ryan Arana scored 21 points and Mike Hrabak 11 for the Elasto Painters, compensating for the combined 13 points on 4-of-21 shooting from Sol Mercado and Gabe Norwood.

Joe Devance led the Aces with 24 oints and 9 rebounds. LA Tenorio added 13 and Willie Miller 12.

Alapag nets 25 as Talk 'N Text rallies past Barako Bull

Jimmy Alapag scored 10 of his 25 points in a searing 21-0 fourth quarter spurt as the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters rallied past the scrappy Barako Bull Energy Boosters, 93-90 in the 2008-2009 KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

Barako Bull captain Alex Crisano hit a three-pointer to give the Energy Boosters their biggest lead, 82-67 with a little over 8 minutes left in the game. That's when Alapag weaved his magic in the stirring run that saw Talk 'N Text grab the lead 88-82. The Tropang Texters won their third straight in six nights.

“Towards the end of the third quarter Jimmy came to me and said we’re not going to lose this game.” TNT coach Chot Reyes related after the game.

“Indeed he came through and made big shots down the stretch. And that is a mark of a great player,” Reyes added.

“We were just lucky the adjustments we made worked,” he said. “We should not have been in that hole in the first place just to be honest.

“Aside from Ali Peek, I really don’t know where my big guys have gone. I think they’re still on vacation or have gone on an early vacation,” the TNT coach tried to explain.

Mark Cardona, who fired 35 points just 2 nights ago, struggled from the field, shooting only 5-of-22 to finish with 12 points, but grabbed 11 rebounds and issued 5 assists. Jason Castro added 12 points and Peek finished with 10 points, 15 rebounds, and 4 shotblocks.

Rookie Ogie Menor led the Energy Boosters with 12 markers. Aris Dimaunahan added 11 and Richard Alonzo and Yousif Aljamal had 10 points apiece.

San Miguel rips Purefoods; extends win streak to 5

Mike Cortez came off the bench to score 22 points while Dondon Hontiveros scattered 20 as the San Miguel Beermen ride a hot start, never allowing the Purefoods TJ Giants a taste of the lead in a 92-76 win in the 2009-2010 KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Arwind Santos and Jonas Villanueva scored and Dorian Pena grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Beermen, who has now won their fifth straigh game after losing their first two.

“It’s another good win keeping our streak. I credit our defense for the streak. Our offense comes and goes but our defensive effort has always been there. Defense is where we get our energy,” said San Miguel coach Siot Tanquingcen.

The Beermen started the game with an 11-2 run and posted several 20-point leads before Purefoods went on a last-ditch rally to come within 76-70 in the middle of the furth quarter. But that was as close as they'll get as Hontiveros led a game-ending 14-6 run to preserve the win.

James Yap led Purefoods with 13 points. Marc Pingris added 12, Roger Yap and Kerby Raymundo 11 each and Paul Artadi and Don Allado scored 10 points apiece.

Mark Cardona fires season-high 35 points; Talk 'N Text wins

Mark Cardona, the league's reigning scoring champion, scored a season-best 35 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc and 12-for-18 overall, while grabbing 5 rebounds and issuing 4 assists as the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters took control with a big third quarter in a 103-94 win over the Coca-Cola Tigers in the 2009-2010 KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Jimmy Alapag went for 21 points on 5-of-9 shooting from thee-point land and Nic Belasco had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Tropang Texters, who was missing the services of forward Harvey Carey.

“Coming into the game I was worried of not having both Carey and Dillinger. But I thought JD showed a great character in tolerating the pain (on his bruised rib),” said TNT coach Chot Reyes, adding he as far from satisfied with their performance.

“Well, it’s nice getting the W. But the point is we didn’t play our best.”

“But the good thing is it’s still early and we can still adjust,” Reyes said.

Dennis Espino led the Tigers with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Larry Rodriguez added 17, Alex Cabagnot 16, Norman Gonzales 13 and Wesley Gonzales 12.

Baguio finds his place at Ginebra

When a player is in synch with his team, there's no telling what the limits are.

Cyrus Baguio displayed this the most now that he has fully absorbed coach Jong Uichico's system with Barangay Ginebra, shining in the Kings' two wins to earn for himself the KFC/Accel-PBA Press Corps' Player of the Week for the period Nov. 2 to 8.

Ginebra was sorely missing the services of injured aces Jayjay Helterbrand and Mark Caguioa while Eric Menk is still trying to fully ease his way back after being sidelined by a fractured toe.

No problem as Baguio led the gritty bunch of remaining Kings in posting back-to-back wins over Barako Bull and Rain or Shine that gave them a 4-1 win-loss slate, just behind unbeaten leader Alaska.

In those victories, the 6-foot-2 Iligan City native came off the bench to average 19.5 points, 3.0 assists, 1.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in an impressive show of all-around talent that made him edge out the likes of two-time MVP Willie Miller of Alaska and national teammate Arwind Santos of San Miguel Beer for the honor.

More important for Uichico is the fact Baguio has now totally embraced his system.

"It took some time, pero now nakapag-adjust na siya," noted Uichico. "It's a very good sign dahil naka-regain na siya ng confidence and I hope nakahanap na siya ng niche sa team."

For the 29-year-old player acquired from Burger King only in the last Fiesta Conference, he was merely trying to repay his coach and teammates' trust in him.

"Tina-try ko lang talaga 'yung best ko para makuha ko sistema ni coach. At least nakakapag-adjust na ako kahit papano kasi nahirapan din talaga ako nu'ng una," he stated.

"At the same time, gusto ko ring ipakita na team player ako," he added.

The former Slam Dunk King indeed struggled in Ginebra's first three games but rose to the occasion when Helterbrand sat the game out last Friday's game against Barako Bull due to a hurting knee, scattering a game-high 22 points on an 8-for-11 field shooting in a cruising 94-86 win.

He had a more modest 17 points but still led all scorers and also dished off a game-high six assists as the Kings stamped their class over Rain or Shine, 86-77, last Sunday.

Cyrus skies high; leads Brgy. Ginebra past Rain or Shine

Still without The Fast and the Furious tandem of Jayjay Helterbrand and Mark Caguioa, Cyrus Baguio stepped up once again, scoring 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor and issued 6 assists, leading the Bargy. Ginebra Kings to an 86-77 win over the winless Rain or Shine Elasto painters.

JC Intal added 11 points and Celino Cruz 10 for the Kings, who improved their win-loss card to 4-1, good for solo second place behind league-leader Alaska Aces.

"We survived another game with an unhealthy lineup and hopefully we can survive some more," said Uichico.

"Ang laking bagay ni Cyrus in our last two games. He's carrying the scoring from Mark and Jayjay, and it's certainly a good sign. He's improved his confidence and I think he's found his niche in the team," Uichico added.

Helterbrand and Caguioa are both out with injured knees.

Jay-R Reyes and rookie Jervy Cruz paced the Elasto Painters, which has dropped their first six games, with 14 points apiece.

Maierhofer gets double-double; Purefoods rips Talk 'N Text

Rico Maierhofer scored a career-high 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked 4 shots as the Purefoods TJ Giants rebounded from a loss to the Coca-Cola Tigers with a convincing 108-102 victory over the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters in the 2009-2010 KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

KG Canaleta added 16 points, Kerby Raymundo and James Yap had 13 points apiece, Marc Pingris scored 11 and Roger Yap produced a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Giants, which moved up to fourth place with a 3-2 win-loss slate.

“Players usually have this mentality, that when we lack some players they think, 'Now we can lose,'” related Gregorio, who missed the services of the injured PJ Simon (knee) and Rafi Reavis (hamstring) and the ailing Don Allado.

“I told them that even if we're down to only six or five players, we must still go all out to win,” Reyes said.

“(Assistant) coach Koy (Banal) said the only way to beat Talk ‘N Text is to grab those rebounds kaya doon ako talaga nag-concentrate, sa mga putbacks,” said Maierhofer, who had five offensive boards.

“We're pretty much trying to manage our excitement level,” related Gregorio. “Obviously today we were able to control our excitement level, wherein I told the players to do a little celebration after the game and not before.

“Going quickly back to our last game I thought we were so arrogant and it was a lesson in humility. When we looked at the tape of our last game we looked like a bunch of high school players, celebrating every made shot. Today, we fought from the opening tip to the final buzzer.”

Harvey Carey topscored for the Tropang Texters with 20 markers. Reigning scoring champion Mark Cardona added 19, Jimmy Alapag 18 and Nic Belasco 17.
