		 Milton Friedman gave Chileans the intellectual wherewithal first to survive the quake, and now to build their lives anew.

		 Time ran this story on Sunday. I took the same photos on Saturday, the day of the quake of this church in Providencia where the bell tower collapsed. It was old and made of wood, which is why it collapsed.

		 Hi, first time I've posted on this site and this is a very long shot.I've been asked by a friend in England who has been asked by some friends in the US to try to contact a girl in Santiago ,Chile her name is Lorena Gurrea and she is a member of the Lambretta Club of Chile.
That is all I know at the moment ,I will try to find out more .What is the extent of the damage in Santiago ?
I am living in Pereira,Colombia so I normally post on that site.
Thanks for any info ,like I say it's along shot but who knows?
Regards Alan.

		 SANTIAGO, Chile - A devastating earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, toppling homes, collapsing bridges and plunging trucks into the fractured earth. A tsunami set off by the magnitude-8.8 quake threatened every nation around the Pacific Ocean — roughly a quarter of the globe.

		 This trip takes anywhere from 7-9 hours due to big delays from road work and border crossing, but the scenery is no less than spectacular. My bus from Santiago left at 2:00 pm and arrived just before 11:00 pm in Mendoza. The scenery up to the border from Santiago was pretty nice, but the scenery on the way back from Mendoza to Chile was killer. The only thing I have seen that can compare is the Grand Canyon. The bus ride was about $28-30 each way at the time. One of the drawbacks to the bus is that you do not get to stop and smell the cactus, nor stop for photos.

* You can do it in a car in 5-6 hours, but there are some arrangements that must be made in advance to get a permit to take a rental car from Chile into Argentina.

* Next time I will fly into Mendoza (about an hour) and rent a car to take back into the canyons as there is alot to do and see along the way back to the border. LAN Chile runs specials for about $50 each way before taxes if you want to consider the plane ride to Mendoza. You will only see the specials from the Spanish vesion (Chile version). If you need English to maneuver your flight booking, they charge much more.

* There are some cheap hotels right outside of the bus terminal in Mendoza that you can walk to in 10 minutes or less. No safety issues. Or you can keep walking another 5-10 minutes towards Independence Plaza and stay at the Sheraton in style for about $175 USD a night. There are lots of hotels in the area ranging from $20 USD a night to $200 USD.

* You get a peak of the highest mountain in the Americas around the border crossing - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aconcagua

		 So, there I am at the corner of Septiembre and Avenida Pedro de Valdivia and this homeless looking guy approaches me and mutters some street slang. I assume he is looking for some change and as I dig in my pocket, he pulls out what appears to be a knife and narrowly misses my face as he attempts to stab me. I catch him out of my peripheral vision and vear back slightly, so he misses my face and instead catched me with his knuckles on my chest.

Shocked, I take a few steps back and he turns into a ferocious little bastard poised to strike again. So, I take off my boot and go at his ass with some gusto because I am now pissed off. He trips and falls stumbling backwards into some flower bed of sorts on the side of the road. I take a few whacks at his head and he covers up pretty well, so I go to work on his chest, stomach and knees, nuts, etc. After 10-12 good whacks a good semaritan steps in and gets between me and the guy. The street guy then throws the weapon into the street as I guess he sensed that the cops were going to be called and it turns out to be a screwdriver.

I'm still pissed off, but relieved not to have a screwdriver sticking out of my face or neck.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Always be aware of your surroundings on the streets. Even the unlikeliest of characters can cause you to have a real bad day. There are some very skilled pickpockets on the METRO here as well. I just had a friend that had his I-Phone ripped off on the METRO without a clue that it had been lifted from his front jean pocket. Gringo beware.......

		 A while ago I posted a very brief comment about a King in Santiago, Chile.
This king however is a different kind of king, he's known in Chile as the cumbia King or "EL Rey de la cumbia chilena"
Tommy Rey has been granted with the National Music Award by the President of Chile and this event happened several years ago and I do not have the date handy.
Anyway, I thought it was musically worthy to mention the grand journeys of her majesty, la cumbia

Here you can read more details about it.

		 Like I said, Chileans are master cheese-makers

Local cheese, queso mantecoso las parcelas de Valdivia

<img src="http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee243/IncertidumbreDesconcertante/P9061175Medium.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket" />

I cheated and bought a selection pack, camembert, queso mantecoso, edam, gruyere and a pretty fine attempt at a roquefort. behind a second mini Camembert and a wedge of parmesan

<img src="http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee243/IncertidumbreDesconcertante/P9061176.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket" />

The parmesan was a bit young but grated nicely with my baby travel cheese grater. A super accessory for those emergency grating situations where you would not otherwise be prepared.

<img src="http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee243/IncertidumbreDesconcertante/P9071216.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket" />

Washed down with a couple of beers, local disco piss cristal, and the awesome kunstmann torobayo pale ale. See that 5%? that is 5 times as much as Aguila pretends to contain.

		 Not a detailed report as Azunoman suggested in the other thread, but certainly a few observations. It is 5 years since I went to Chile and this trip was not so much for pleasure so I was not on the tourist trail.

1. SCL

Santiago Airport is very modern and airy but I always had a gripe about it, that being the number corrupt pirate taxi drivers on the make hitting on unsuspecting travellers. They seem to have sorted it out a bit, there are still lots of taxi drivers and they seem to be licensed, they wear big badges around their necks. That said there is no need whatsoever to get a taxi because Tur Bus offers numerous excellent services, TurBus Aeropuerto takes you straight to terminal Alameda for CLP1700, If you have a hotel of hostal booked then Tur Bus transfer will take you to the door in a shared minibus for about CLP7000. Simply no reason whatsoever to take a taxi.

Things have been reorganised at passport control, Yanks and Aussies must have pissed off the Chileans at some point and they still have to pay to get in, there is a wee desk and cash machine in the passport hall.

Immediately after passport control, it was possible to buy an Entel PCS chip for pocos pesos, this has now moved and they no longer sell chips, you can only rent one with a deposit of US$200 which is bloody ridiculous and completely hopeless if like me you were leaving from a different airport and couldn't take it back

2. Terminal Alameda

Terminal Alameda still does what it says on the tin, it is a fantastic bus terminal mainly operated by Tur Bus with departures as far north as Arica and as far south as Punta Arenas, here you can buy a cellphone chip, but apparently only from the girl in the basement that sells handbags. You can leave your suitcase here for CLP2000 if you have a night time departure from the terminal and have a few hours for a nose around Santi. The terminal is right next to Metro Station Universidad de Santiago which is on the same line as la moneda in the centre and Providencia where there are a few cute hostals. In terminal Alameda, you will get your first indication that Chileans eat a lot of hot dogs, they are feckin everywhere.

3. Tur Bus

Tur Bus is fab, I got an overnight departure in "salon cama" which is a nearly flat bed. 800km, nearly 12 hours and it cost CLP18000 with a snack in the morning aboard the bus. Stops in Temuco just long enough to have a smoke if you happen to be awake.

Tur Bus have however recently made it difficult to buy tickets in advance so for that they take the arepa of shame award http://bogdirectory.com/arepaofshame/index.html

4. Valdivia

I left my heart in Valdivia back in 2004, so had to go back as I was having some difficulties pumping blood to my extremities. Didn't see much of the city for personal reasons, but if there is a pleasure greater than opening the curtains on the bus, sitting upright, sipping on a shitty pot of jugo de durazno and taking in the view then I know not of it. The approach to Valdivia is beautiful, but probably a bit less beautiful than hiring a car and just having a drive around.

Valdivia lies on the confluence of the Bio Bio and Rio Valdivia, really it is simply delicious and slightly germanic. I sat in Cafe Palace in the city centre, wearing my greatcoat and sipping on a delicious doble cortado. Nothing has changed in there since 2004, even the faces, but looking at the decor, not much has changed since about 1970, and you can smoke there too.

Just outside of Valdivia is Torobayo, home of the German Kuntsmann brewery, so Valdivia is home to numerous great beers, cost about 600 pesos for half a litre in a nice cafe

5. Food

Chile is a bit like Britain, haven't really got a cuisine of their own to shout about but they are closet foodies. Certainly the food scene has improved in the last 5 years, you name it, they make it well. I had my first half decent chinese there that I have had in ages, cost about 3 mil pesos and didnt kill me

Cheese, say no more, you name it they got it. They also have bread that doesn't taste like fucking cake. Compared to Colombia the supermarkets are dirt cheap.

6. Iquique airport

Look guys, I know you are in the middle of the Atacama desert, but please do try to make an effort. What am I supposed to do but look at the sand during a 3 hour layover?
