Spain is a fantastic holiday destination with fabulous weather, golden sandy beaches, great nightlife and so many places to visit and things to see and do, not to mention the fantastic food and drink - there is certainly plenty to keep you occupied.

Cheap flights to Sapin are available in the UK from Jet2.com.

Spanish Language School- your best recc. in S. America!

By backporch on May 22, 2009, 20:14.

 hi,
i'm looking to go for a little learning and a little adventure this summer- what can you tell me about your favorite language school, anywhere in South America?
if you've got several, here's what i'm hoping to find:
-some place w/easy access to nature's adventures
-small town preferred to large city, unless the large city is in a wonderous natural setting
-preferably not so touristed
-moderate to warm temps in june-august
-quality homestay
-good quality 1:1 language instruction for advanced level.

thus far i've been peeking around at other posts about schools, and have found some recc's in ecuador, peru (arequipa, ayacucho, huancayo), and a few in bolivia. any of these places would be fine.... or anywhere else, from where you came home and said, "that was amazing!"

thanks for any of your thoughts, sentiments, random musings, or straight up suggestions.

happy travels!

PRIVATE SPANISH CLASS in La Candelaria, Bogota

By Danny Kim on Apr 27, 2009, 12:11.

SPANISH LANGUAGE is essential to travel Latin America. Many travelers learn Spanish before they start travel, in many places such as Antigua or Quito.
However, in fact, most of the classes in Latin America are managed by non-professional, non-English speaking teachers.

People know that Colombian Spanish is the best as it has neutral intonation and accent, and not spoken too fast.
But still, there are few chances to find a good place to learn Spanish in Bogota.

From now on, you have a great opportunity to improve your Spanish, in the historic center of Bogota.
From beginner to advanced level, our one-on-one, private Spanish class will help you to communicate with Latin American people.
Your journey will be delightful as you can speak more Spanish!

I went to a unisex salon in the Elephant and Castle shopping centre and got a haircut and wash for £10. But I got free Spanish practice with a Colombian from Cali. Fernanda 020 7708 0307. Not as good or as cheap as my one in Cartagena nor was she as beautiful still ... The place is next door to the restaurant the Bodeguida (sp?).

By el flaco on May 16, 2008, 03:11.

I’ve mentioned many times on previous posts the fun I’ve had learning Spanish. The best way for me has been one to one lessons with Spanish speakers, not professional teachers. I pay the same rate as for a cleaner which is what these people do to supplement their income.

As a bonus I get beautiful young women in their twenties coming to my house and hanging on my every word. As a man in his fifties this is intoxicating stuff, how else would you meet them? I don’t know how my wife allows it! You soon get very close and hear all their secrets and problems and you can get stuff off your chest as well. The relationship is more confessor than friend so you can ask things you could never get away with normally. As they are here (in London) on student visas they soon go home and pass you on to another one.

I discovered Colombia through one of my teachers who invited me to Barranquilla for her wedding and allowed me to stay at her house and meet her friends and family.

I’ve read about one to one courses in Latin America (not Colombia) staying with a local family which I thought sounded fun but by then my Spanish was too good.

So my question is, how many of you are learning Spanish this way? I only hear of people going to group lessons which I think is a terrible way of learning.

I've just been reading rocinate's very interesting post 'Levels of politeness when requesting...' and I was struck by the phrase "In certain environments Quisiera could be viewed as faggy, or affected."

Now that intrigues the heck out of me, because that's always how I request things over there. I must have said 'Quisiera una cerveza por favor' hundreds of times. And now it's come to be mentioned, I do recall a slight frisson from the waiter/ess of me having said something not quite right...Or maybe that's the power of suggestion and the post has put that idea into my mind...

Could anyone enlighten me further as to the cultural weight attached to 'quisiera' in Colombia?

My favorite websites for learning Spanish. Wish someone had given me this list when I was starting out.

 1. WordReference.com: An unusually comprehensive dictionary with an extensive set of forums where intelligent native speakers will comment on usage questions.

 2. Spanish5000.com: By far the best site for learning Spanish vocabulary online, since it teaches words in context so that you absorb grammar at the same time you learn how to use the vocabulary you're studying.
 3. NotesInSpanish.com: A broad range of dialogues at varying levels of difficulty, presented in high-quality professional recordings.

All of these are free sites, although the last charges for premium services.

 Hola,
Muchas gracias

 Hi.

My name is Iris and I am a spanish teacher. I can give you some advice about learning spanish!!!!! First of all spanish needs a lot of practice due to the verbs and the conjugations but also because of the SUBJUNTIVO!!!!a lot may suffer with this rigth????? well.

Ojalá (this word actually comes from the musulman and mean the will of Alah).
Ojalá que llueva. (recomed you to listen to Juan Luis guerra Ojalá que llueva café en el campo) there u have a lot of uses for this word.

Hope it was usefull

When you are in a conversation and want to give an opinion, you can use this phrases:

Perdón, pero yo creo que...(sorry, but I think that...)

Perdón por interrumpir, pero (excuse me for the interrupting, but...)

¿Puedo agregar algo ? (Can I add something?)

¿Puedo decir algo? (Can I say something?)

Me gustaría hacer un comentario sobre lo que estás diciendo (I'd like to comment on that)

¿Puedo hacer una pregunta? (Can/May I ask a question?)

Then, to begin the sentence you can say:

En mi opinión (In my opinion)

I personally think, believe (Yo creo que)

No necesariamente estarán de acuerdo conmigo, pero...(Not everyone will agree with me, but...)

First rule is that in spanish you have to write the "¿" in the beggining of the question. For example:

¿Tuviste un viaje agradable ? (Did you have a nice journey ?)

Tengan en cuenta que no se traduce literalmente. Sino que lo que importa es la idea que se quiere expresar.

¿Cuánto tiempo te vas a quedar? ¿Cuánto tiempo vas a estar? (How long are you staying?)

¿Estás disfrutando la reunión? ¿La estás pasando bien? (Are you enjoying the meeting?)

¿Dónde trabajás? (Where do you work?)

¿Te gusta tu trabajo? ¿Te gusta lo que hacés? (Do you like your job?)
