"A friend of ours told us that when a guidebook says there's nothing to see in a certain town usually there are many things to discover, and he was damn right. According to the lonely planet Chiang Rai is a gateway more than a touristic attraction so our plan was to just stay one night but plans change especially doing a trip like this." http://angelonny.blogspot.com/2009/03/aint-no-mountain-high-enough.html

Funny this one, from the Lonely Planet forums: "...and on top of that, you want us to tell you secret places that are not in the books. Well, let me burst that bubble right away: there are no secret places that are kept out of the guidebooks deliberately by the locals..."

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?messageID=14737830&tstart=0#14737830

I do think that, on occasion, travel writers will leave out a place. But I don't think it happens much. The best way to find good places is to listen to the word on the street once you're in a country, anyway. Or to go where no man has gone before, yourself, I suppose :)

Of course, they are a competitor, and they publish their own guide. Arrest warrants issued for Man City owner Thaksin Shinawatra

Thailand's Supreme Court said it would issue arrest warrants for the country's former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife after they flew to Britain while facing trial in Bangkok....

"I must apologise again for deciding to come to live in England. If I am fortunate enough, I will return and die on Thai soil, just like other Thais," Mr Thaksin wrote....

A figure as controversial as he is popular in Thailand, 59-year-old Mr Thaksin rose to power in 2001 riding a massive wave of support from the country's rural farmers and urban poor. His populist policies saw him win a second term as prime minister. But his style of leadership coupled with allegations of corruption and abuse of power earned him enemies among the middle class and Bangkok's establishment, which culminated in the military ousting him in 2006....

Mr Thaksin, who had returned to Thailand only six months ago, faces several corruption investigations. He denies all allegations. His wife was sentenced to three years in prison on July 31 after being found guilty of tax fraud. She is currently on bail pending an appeal....

Thailand for travellers

The Kingdom of Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist country, and one of the finest countries in the world in which to spend a vacation. Blessed with a tropical climate that is neither too hot, too dry, nor too wet in the monsoon season, it is possible to travel comfortably in Thailand at any time of the year.
Travellers, upon arrival in this land, are safe from the turmoil of life. Even in Bangkok, the Thai uniqueness in its food, architecture, language, customs and religion enliven and please the senses.
For travellers, Thailand is the only gateway in which to experience the special life of Southeast Asia. Due to the fact that the country has never been colonised, the Thai individuality blooms and remains vibrant. When the journey is over, the Kingdom will leave visitors with the desire to return again and again, as the smells, sights, and memories of the land and people remain indelible in their thoughts, for Thailand is a feast that they will always carry with them.
Thailand's climate is tropical, high both in temperature and humidity, and dominated by monsoons. April and May are the hottest months of the year, when even the locals are moved to complain about the heat. June sees the beginning of the South West Monsoon, and brings with it the rainy season, which continues intermittently until the end of October. From November to the end of February the climate is much less trying with a cooling North East breeze and a reduction in the humidity level. This is also the main tourist season, and the best time to visit Thailand. The north and north-east are generally cooler than Bangkok in winter, and hotter in summer.

Ill be visiting friends in Taiwan in September but i only plan on staying there a for a few weeks. Whats a good way to travel from Taipei to Bangkok thats both flexible and affordable? Expedia had flight from the 700USD and china airline had flight around 300USD. Does that sounds fair? Any input would be great.

Thanks

 Hey all,
what's the quickest way of getting out of Bangkok when your flight lands there, without making the whole trip much more tiring? I don't particularly want to spend my first few days in Bangkok, rather in some relaxed place, but I don't want to make a really long local trip after a gruelling flight either.

Any ideas?
