We are looking for a freelance writer to research, write and invite guest writers to our series of online publications tailored to expats, retirees and those looking to buy/rent real estate in Latin America.

The company was founded in 2005 and has rapidly expanded to numerous countries in Latin America. We are currently building something similar to the MLS in the United States and to support this effort we are looking for someone to help us manage some supporting blog sites.

To see an example of one of our sites, visit www.VivaRealMexico.com.

You are able to work from home. We can pay in either USD or Colombian Pesos.

Anyone interested, please send me an email to brian (at) vivareal.com

Ideally, you have experience or a background in journalism or a track record managing a popular blog.

Gracias.

Bolivia Barn Raising

By Peter on Jun 6, 2008, 10:14.

 Hey all,
I decided to try something new: a barn raising week for the bolivia travel guide. We'll take a week to attempt to reach 50 places, 20 guides and 100 hostels for the Bolivia travel guide. The deadline is next week Friday. Not sure if this will work at all, but I figure if we all put our shoulders onder it we can start a pretty decent travelguide to Bolivia?

So if you've been to Bolivia, go add some places, hostels or travel guides. Just go to the travelguide pages and click on the add and edit buttons to start writing.

Travelguide writing

By Peter on Jun 4, 2008, 03:10.

 Hey all,
welcome to the new travelguide writing section. It's all about the travelguides: what should go in them, how to write them, etcetera. So let's discuss.

I've written some initial guidelines here: http://poorbuthappy.com/about/writing/ The most important thing is: these travelguides are for backpackers. The site is called poorbuthappy after all! So it's focused on cheap hostels etcetera.

Apart from that, the vision is that we can write better, more up to date and more interesting travel guides if we write them together on the internet than if we let the professional travelwriters from Lonely Planet and such write them. They're good, but travelwriting for the book publishers has become a McJob, consisting mostly of checking prices and new hostels. They don't add new towns and places, because they don't have more space in the books. They add expensive hotels because more and more people with money (tourists, not travelers) buy the books, and this makes them great money. But even though i always loved the travelguides and I still get them, I have the feeling they're getting worse and worse. More irrelevant detail. More expensive hotels I'll never stay in. Less unexplored places. So I figure we can do better here. So this is the first step to better travel online travel guides. And they'll be free, as they should be.

Most travel guides are still empty right now, the Colombia one has a good start. Let's get them going!
