If We Ran The World

You may have heard mention recently about a brand new online action platform that’s beginning to creep into Ireland. It’s called IfWeRanTheWorld.com (IWRTW). The site poses the very simple question: If you ran the world, what would you do? We like this, we like it a lot. We stumbled across it last week while reading Paul Dervan’s idea for helping charities. Paul’s idea is to hook marketing graduates up with charities and not-for-profits in Ireland to provide quality voluntary work for 6 months, in return for which the graduates get marketing classes and workshops from the best in the business. Paul has received a huge response to his call-to-action, you can read all about it here. You can also join in the fun over at IfWeRanTheWorld by registering and joining the action. I spoke to Cindy Gallop, the key figure behind the website, over Skype on Wednesday and the plans for the site sound incredible. The site is currently in Beta testing, so there are still lots of bugs there. Listen to an interview with Cindy on part two of this podcast (direct MP3 link) from Saturday’s The Business show on RTÉ Radio One – Cindy is on after Patrick Collison talks about the iPad on the 10th April.

Grace iPhone App

Speaking of all things ‘i’, you may have missed the release of a new Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) app for the iPhone. The app was developed by Lisa Domican and Steve Troughton-Smith after Lisa saw an advertisement for an O2 iPhone on a bus. The app aims to make communication easier for children with autism. You can find more information about this app over on the (award-winning) Irish Autism Action blog.

Comedy Night Fundraiser

You’re all cordially invited to our first fundraising event – a comedy night in the Laughter Lounge on Eden Quay on Thursday 22nd April. The event promises to be brilliant, with entertainment provided by a “Whose Line is it Anyway”-style show called ‘Text in the City’. The audience will send in texts to the GIANT mobile phone (see the picture above!) and the comedians will perform improvised routines based on the texts! On-stage will be Ian Coppinger, Paul Tylak and Joe ‘Father Damo’ Rooney! This promises to be a wonderful night, with tickets costing just €25 available by calling (01) 894 2765. The proceeds from the tickets will go towards providing tuition for young people in our centre in Mountjoy Square.

You can also donate to PBI by going to http://short.ie/give2pbi

The event is over 18 and ID is required.

Facebook users – go here to RSVP to the invite!

Board Positions Available

We have a number of positions available on BoardMatch at the moment. Unfortunately I can’t link directly to them from here. The positions we’re looking to fill are:

Secretary

Treasurer

Chair of Parent and Carer Training Sub Committee

We anticipate the workload to be no more than 12 hours per month. Please feel free to e-mail info@pbireland.ie if you are interested in getting involved with PBI in this manner.

Study Group

As we mentioned last week, we’ll be running a supported study group for teenagers with Aspergers Syndrome from the 22nd April in Mountjoy Square. Check the previous post for more details, or speak to Jennifer on (01) 894 2765

NAMA For Charities?

Keith Duffy, the patron of Irish Autism Action, had an opinion piece in The Irish Times last Friday, for World Autism Awareness Day. “A Nama for charities and a bailout for volunteers would be great. The only thing certain after the week we’ve had is that we won’t get either.” It’s a good piece overall, so have a read of it here.
