This Sunday is traditionally known as “Good Shepherd Sunday,” a day to explore biblical images of the “good shepherd” who calls, leads and protects us. This week’s scripture reading from John draws our attention to Jesus as “the shepherd” as well as to Jesus as “the gate.” How do we hold these two images together? In what ways do those images challenge us and how do they lead us, in the gospel writer’s words, to “abundant life”?

The Extraordinary Ordination of Adam Edward Marshall

Ordination is one part celebratory worship, one part sacred consecration, and one part solemn mystery. Today Pacific Beach UMC is honored to host the Church Within A Church ordination of our beloved sibling Adam Edward Marshall. In the CWAC tradition, it is the community that confers ordination—not a bishop, or board, or institutional authority.

While You Walk Along

Have you ever had one of those “lightbulb” moments? You’ve likely seen them in cartoons when a character is deep in thought and suddenly — a lightbulb appears over their head! Obviously it’s played for gags in those contexts, but have you ever felt like that in real life? I know for me the lightbulb moment NEVER happens when I need it to. Usually it’s so long after the fact that it ceases to be useful. Have you ever wondered what that “lightbulb” moment was like for the disciples after the Emmaus road? Think about that Emmaus experience from Luke 24 as we prepare for guest preacher Adam Marshall on Sunday.

Strange Glory

Transfiguration Sunday is observed on the last Sunday before the season of Lent begins. Since Epiphany Sunday in early January, we have contemplated the glory of God as it’s revealed in and through Jesus. This Sunday puts an exclamation point on that theme as we witness Jesus’ glowing transfiguration on a mountaintop in the presence of patriarchs of old as well as three of his disciples.

What is the takeaway from this mountaintop experience for the disciples and for us? What might we learn about the nature of God’s glory, not only on the mountaintop, but also on the dusty paths back down into the valley?

In this passage, Jesus calls his followers “salt of the earth” and “light of the world,” imploring them to be more righteous than the religious leaders of that day. What does it mean for us to be “salt” and “light” and how does that relate to being “righteous” in today’s world?
