Join Brooker Creek Preserve volunteers on the last Saturday of each month to help maintain the wildflower garden.  Wear closed toed shoes and bring hand gardening tools, gloves, hat and bug repellent. We will provide breakfast snacks and coffee.  No gardening experience necessary.

Join the Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve for the Brooker Book Club every first Saturday of the month. This club is geared towards adults. Please note that registration is required due to a limited amount of seats. Please meet in the Conference Room inside the Visitors Center. *Note that books will not be provided for you.*

To ensure an enjoyable and positive discussion, please think of a question you would like to have the group discuss about the book for the month. These questions will serve as additions to those the host of the Book Club will prepare each month.

MacDonald adopted Florida as his home, and had a very successful international career of mystery writing, pulp writing, and even science fiction. We chose his mystery/detective Travis McGee series because it is primarily set in Florida.

Reserve a spot for a hike that will sharpen your observation skills as we seek out new small natural treasures.  As we look past the trees and shrubs, we will enjoy the less obvious things along the trail. Possibly something very interesting you’ve never noticed!

Volunteer Hike Guides will meet participants in the lobby of the Education Center 10 minutes before the scheduled start time. We strongly suggest all hikers visit the restroom before we begin as there are no facilities along the trail.

• Hikes take about two (2) hours to complete.

Discover the shady hammocks, pine flatwoods and forested wetlands of Brooker Creek Preserve, where you will learn how the natural communities of the Preserve are connected in much the same way as human communities.  We will explore our connections to the natural areas near us, and learn the possible impacts we have on one another.

NIGHT HIKES

Join the Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve for a one-mile hiking experience along the Ed Center Trail…at night!   At night, the world is full of sounds and smells very different from the daytime. These special hikes are open to the public and limited to 20 people per hike.  A $3 per person donation is requested.  Experienced guides will lead you through an evening you will talk about for some time.

Join photographers and interpretive naturalists Karl and Kathleen Nichter for a hike at Brooker Creek Preserve. We will discuss photography and nature while hiking, stopping when we find subjects to photograph. We start with a short classroom session on some of the basics just to get us all thinking about photography, then we talk about what we might see based on the season and that day’s weather. After that we head out to the trails. Each hike has a slightly different theme based on what nature might have on offer that day, the photo techniques we discuss, and the interests of the group. If it rains, we stay inside for a presentation and lively discussion of nature photography.

Return The Preserve  Work Days focus on areas within Brooker Creek Preserve where we can apply some hands on help. We may be removing exotic invaders or removing overgrown native vines.  It is hard work but it is rewarding work!  Please join us as we work to restore Brooker Creek Preserve to its natural beauty!

We will meet in the parking lot at 7:45am with a goal of starting at 8:00am. Please bring clippers, loppers, & handsaws. Don't forget your gloves, hat & sunscreen! Long sleeved shirts, jeans & closed toed shoes are recommended. 

Breakfast snacks and water will be provided.

This class is only offered in English. The class must be taken independently by the employee. Any type of assistance (language translation etc) is not permitted. 

This class is for individuals who have computer experience and are familiar with online forms, websites, checking email, and online test taking.  If the employee is not computer-literate, cannot read, or needs any type of language assistance, they must be registered to attend in person. The course is offered in person monthly in English AND Spanish. 

This course is to be taken individually by the employee. The employee taking the course MUST be able to READ and ANSWER the test questions INDEPENDENTLY.

Follow the instructions (5 STEPS) below for SkyPrep Online Course. It is recommended that you print this page for successful completion of all 5 steps.

Step 1: Purchase ticket and receive confirmation email from Eventbrite with link to SkyPrep course (check your junkbox just in case).

Step 2: Register on SkyPrep with unique VALID email address. Important!!! An email address can only be used ONCE on SkyPrep so a unique VALID email is required for each person taking the online course.  

Step 3: After registering on SkyPrep you will receive two confirmation emails from Skyprep. (check the junkmail box just in case) The second email will contain the link to the course with a unique password that must be entered in order to login.  

Step 4: Login and begin SkyPrep course. Anticipate 2.5 to 3 hours to complete the course. Upon login, the course is only available for 24-hours and must be completed once started. 

Step 5: After completing final exam, download, complete, and submit the landscape affidavit. 

The resource articles are incorporated into the course and are available for download.

The Landscape BMP certification course is required for those doing work in the lawn and landscape maintenance industry such as planting, mowing, edging, tree and shrub pruning, and landscape debris management. This certification is accepted in all regional counties and cities.

This is a guided hike through mangrove and upland ecosystems of Weedon Island Preserve. Join us to learn about the coastal environment and the early residents of the Preserve.

Participants are encouraged to wear a hat and closed-toe shoes, and to bring a water bottle. This hike is ~1.5 miles in length along a boardwalk trail. All ages are welcome but children younger than 6 years old may find this hike challenging.

Evening with the Author: John & Mary Lou Missal

Great works of literature can be entertaining or educational but they all share the ability to transport the reader to a different time or place through their stories. Join us at Weedon Island Preserve for Evening with the Author, a program that introduces readers to the masterminds behind some of their favorite stories and provides a look into the history of how these books were written. 

This Evening's guests will be John and Mary Lou Missal, award-winning historians and authors whose primary work focuses on the Seminole Indian Wars. These were the longest, costliest, and deadliest of all the nation's wars against Native Americans and spanned a period of over forty years. 

Biography and Selected Works:

John has been a life-long student of history, studies Shakespeare, and has taught astronomy courses. Mary Lou has a B.A. from Indiana University and an M.A. from California State University. 

Their historical works include The Seminole Wars: America's Longest Indian Conflict from the University Press of Florida, History of the Third Seminole War 1849-1858 (co-authored with Dr. Joe Knetsch) from Casemate Books, This Torn Land: Poetry of the Second Seminole War from the Seminole Wars Foundation, This Miserable Pride of a Soldier: The Letters and Journals of Col. William S. Foster in the Second Seminole War from the Seminole Wars Foundation and the University of Tampa Press, The Army Is My Calling: The Life and Writings of Maj. John Rogers Vinton from the Florida Historical Soceity Press, and an Enhanced Edition of Woodburne Potter's classic The War in Florida. They also have articles published in The Encyclopedia of War and American Society.

Their works of fiction include Elizabeth's War a novel of the First Seminole War, and Hollow Victory a novel of the Second Seminole War, both from the Florida Historical Society Press. Both books have won the prestigious Patrick D. Smith Award for Florida Fiction from the Florida Historical Society.

Hike through the mangrove and upland ecosystems of Weedon Island Preserve while learning about the coastal environment and the early residents that lived on the Preserve thousands of years ago.

This hike is rougly 1.5 miles in length and follows the Tower Boardwalk trail at the Preserve which is ADA accessible. Attendees are encouraged to wear a hat and closed-toe shoes, and to bring a water bottle. Hike is recommended for ages 6+

Our Master Gardeners provide solutions for all types of questions concerning garden, lawn, and landscape care. With the backing of research-based information from the University of Florida our staff of horticulturists offer sound expert advice to walk-in customers. The help desk is available first-come, first served, but to assist with staffing we request that walk-ins register for service.

For help with plant identification, please bring in a representative sample of the plant (leaves, stem, fruit or flowers). If it's not possible to bring in a sample, please take a photograph to share with Master Gardeners.

Have you ever thought “What a waste!” when you see rainwater pouring out of your gutter down spout and then down the street? Then join UF/IFAS Extension Florida-Friendly Landscaping agent Brian Niemann for this hour-long workshop on how to save that water in a recycled plastic drum for use in your landscape! The collected water may be used for your plant beds, potted plants, and special plant collections. Each attendee will receive instructions on how to build and install a rain barrel, or you also have the option of *purchasing a completed rain barrel in advance of the workshop.

*Rain Barrels are available only at the class and pre-payment is required when registering. If the rain barrel will be transported inside your car please plan to cover your seats to protect from possible soil or moisture.

Drum Specifications: Plastic, recycled food-grade drums. Please note: color of drum may vary. Approximate Drum Dimensions: 3' tall, 22" diameter. Capacity: approximately 55 gallons. These drums have two 3" diameter threaded holes with caps in a NON-REMOVABLE top. Cutting of the top typically requires a power saw. As part of the installation we recommend the user attach screen to the top of the barrel to exclude mosquitoes and to filter roof debris.

Every second and fourth Thursday of each month, children are treated to a variety of stories and hands-on activities that connect them to their environment. This activity is recommended for ages 3 to 5.

Florida’s coastline provides the perfect habitat for many shorebirds, some are year-round residents while others visit during migration. Join the Clearwater Audubon Society to learn about our shorebird neighbors and how we can help birds thrive and survive. This 30 minute presentation will be followed by a craft.

Explore the Riviera Trail at Weedon Island Preserve on this two-mile, guided hike. The natural dirt path through uplands and scrub habitats goes over an ancient midden and along portions of Riviera Bay. This walk helps participants experience how a small clan of the Weeden Island Culture, part of their larger prehistoric tribe, may have lived in and interacted with the natural environment they found here. This story is told through the lens of the gopher tortoise, the sabal palm, and Florida’s ancient crystalline sand. Walking slowly, this hike takes about 1.5 hours.

Ever wonder what archaeologists do with all that stuff they dig up at archaeological sites once the fieldwork is finished? At the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) Volunteer Lab, you can come find out for yourself! Learn all about how artifacts and other archaeological material get processed in the laboratory so that we can use them to learn about the past. You will get the chance to sort through, identify, and wash artifacts and other material from real archaeological sites!

Join the Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve Beekeepers Club kick-off session! This club is run by Friends member and bee hobbyist, Bob Burkard. He is excited to get this group started, and looks forward to helping us become beekeepers and share our love of this fascinating hobby.  

This kick-off session is intended for those people wishing to join the Beekeepers Club.  Everyone is welcome to attend this kick-off session.  However, because of insurance requirements, only those folks who join the Beekeepers Club can help build equipment and visit the apiary.  The fee to join the Beekeepers Club is $25/year/person, and all persons in the Beekeepers Club must also be a member of the Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve.  You can join the Friends and the Beekeepers Club the day of the kick-off session if you wish.

Evening with the Author: Dr. Eugene A. Shinn

Join us at Weedon Island Preserve for Evening with the Author, a program that introduces readers to the masterminds behind some of their favorite stories and provides a look into the history of how these books were written. 

This Evening's guest will be Dr. Eugene (Gene) A. Shinn, a world renowned scientist among geologists, marine biologists, and petroleum engineers, and Florida native. Dr. Shin is the author of Bootstrap Geologist: My Life in Science (2013), and co-author of Geology of the Florida Keys (2018). He is the recipient of the Twenhofel Medal, the highest award given by the Society for Sedimentary Geology. Currently, he is also a courtesy professor of geological oceanography at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg.

Both English & Spanish classes are offered on the same day at the same time at the same location. 

This is the required class for those doing work in the lawn and landscape maintenance industry such as mowing, pruning, and landscape debris management. 

1.Photo ID is required. Without photo ID you cannot attend the class and will have to pay to re-register.

2.Please arrive 20 minutes prior to class start. Class will start on time. If you are late you may be turned away and will have to pay to re-register.

To obtain certification you will need to pass a test. By passing the test, you will be awarded a certificate and a Pinellas County vehicle decal at the end of the class.

This is a guided hike through mangrove and upland ecosystems of Weedon Island Preserve. Join us to learn about the coastal environment and the early residents of the Preserve.

Participants are encouraged to wear a hat and closed-toe shoes, and to bring a water bottle. This hike may be up to 2 miles in length depending on the trail chosen for the trip. All ages are welcome but children younger than 6 years old may find this hike challenging.

Lara will walk participants through the process of collecting, filtering, and analyzing a water sample for the presence of microplastics. She will also showcase how to enter data into online database. Interested participants can sign-out a sample bottle to collect their first real-world sample and then bring it back in to filter and analyze. Contribute to a relatively new field of science by getting involved in the Florida Microplastic Awareness Project. In this family friendly presentation we will explore some of Florida’s most unique archaeological sites and the amazing finds that archaeologists have made there. Learn what it was like to live in prehistoric Florida long ago, complete with real artifacts and replicas of tools that ancient Floridians would have used to survive. There are 46 native species of snakes in Florida and most occur in the central peninsula. Despite playing important ecological roles as both predators and prey, snakes remain highly misunderstood animals. Only four venomous species occur in central Florida and these snakes present little danger when left alone. Well known local herpetologist and environmental educator George L. Heinrich (Heinrich Ecological Services) will present on why snakes are cool! Mr. Heinrich will discuss Florida snake diversity, natural history, conservation, and snake safety. 

A selection of live snakes will be available for viewing and handling if participants choose to do so (we hope that you will!).

Evening with the Author: Scott Deitche

Join us at Weedon Island Preserve for Evening with the Author, a program that introduces readers to the masterminds and histories behind some of their favorite stories.

This Evening's guest will be Scott Deitche, local author of sevens books on organized crime, including Cigar City Mafia: A Complete History of the Tampa Underworld, and The Silent Don: The World of Santo Trafficante Jr. He has also written dozens of articles on organized crime for local and national magazines and newspapers and was the senior writer for Tampa Mafia Magazine. Scott has been featured on The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, A&E, C-SPAN, Oxygen, American Heroes Channel, and both national and local news and radio shows.

The program will begin at 7:00pm with complementary refreshments available between 6:30-7:00pm.

Increase the number and diversity of birds in your landscape by following the advice of Sensing Nature’s Wildlife Biologist Jeanne Murphy. Learn what providing food, water, and cover, and being sensitive to the seasonal needs of resident and migratory species means. Seeds and berries are only part of the story... plants that harbor insects also provide food, especially during nesting season, creating cavities for nesters, and watching how birds use your yard are all ways that will help improve your important slice of Florida habitat. Then after the presentation, put your green thumb to work! Plant a native cutting or some seeds in a pot to take home.

Exploring Environmental Education Curriculum Options (ECO) Teacher Training Workshop

The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension Pinellas County's Natural Resources Agent has teamed up with St. Petersburg College, College of Education Professor to offer this nationally award-winning, week-long environmental education workshop for pre-service elementary & ESE education students, current elementary & ESE teachers, and non-formal educators.

The aim of this workshop is to provide participants with tools and information to interpret the natural world and impart the need for resource conservation to their audience. Using local, state, and national curricula correlated to Florida Standards, participants will be given activities and resources to help foster environmental knowledge and good environmental stewardship in their students.

Each day will feature different environmental subjects and professional speakers will be brought in to provide background knowledge to participants. Workshop sessions will conclude with a reflection and an evaluation of the day’s activities. Certificates will be awarded for the completion of specific portions of the training as well as a final certificate of completion.

Note: Curriculum taught each year is different, so if you have participated in the past, you can participate again for a whole new educational experience!

Have you ever thought “What a waste!” when you see rainwater pouring out of your gutter down spout and then down the street? Then join UF/IFAS Extension Florida-Friendly Landscaping agent Brian Niemann for this hour-long workshop on how to save that water in a recycled plastic drum for use in your landscape! The collected water may be used for your plant beds, potted plants, and special plant collections. Each attendee will receive instructions on how to build and install a rain barrel, or you also have the option of *purchasing a completed rain barrel in advance of the workshop.

*Rain Barrels are available only at the class and pre-payment is required when registering. If the rain barrel will be transported inside your car please plan to cover your seats to protect from possible soil or moisture.

Drum Specifications: Plastic, recycled food-grade drums. Please note: color of drum may vary. Approximate Drum Dimensions: 3' tall, 22" diameter. Capacity: approximately 55 gallons. These drums have two 3" diameter threaded holes with caps in a NON-REMOVABLE top. Cutting of the top typically requires a power saw. As part of the installation we recommend the user attach screen to the top of the barrel to exclude mosquitoes and to filter roof debris.

Join us on Saturday, August 18, for an informational meeting!

It will be held from 2-3pm, in the Preserve’s auditorium.

This is the first and informational meeting for the Brooker Creek Explorers 4-H club, for 2018-2019. This club meets at the Brooker Creek Preserve monthly. They do a variety of 4-H projects, exploring any topics that might interest your child. This club is open to ages 5-18 (with older members serving as teen leaders). 

Club is limited to 25 members, so be sure to attend this meeting and get on the list for next year!

Pinellas County is a watershed!

A watershed carries water "shed" from the land after rainfall. Drop by drop, water is channeled into soils, creeks and streams, making its way to Tampa Bay or the Gulf of Mexico.

Every bit of land drains to water and everything we do on land has an impact on our water quality!  Common items like dirt, grass clippings & yard debris, pet waste, and fertilizer become pollution in our waters.

Each year, community members and organizations like Keep Pinellas Beautiful, work with local governments to identify areas that are inundated with marine debris. The Great American Cleanup is a national campaign through which volunteers remove debris from our creeks, watersheds and oceans.

Won’t you join us for this Waterway and Mangrove island cleanup in Pinellas Park? You can bring your own canoe/kayak or borrow a canoe from us (assigned morning of event, first come first serve). We'll provide all the cleanup materials you'll need.

Please Note, this is an 18+ event. 

Participants must wear a closed- toe wading shoe (old tennis shoes, keens, scuba booties).  Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, cover up) and insect repellent is highly recommended. All participants must abide by the safety policies and recommendations of Pinellas County Staff.
