LensFlare 35 is a weekly show brought to you by Dave Warner. In this week’s episode, Dave interviews film maker Shane Hurlbut. Shane is the pioneering leader of the team who first recognized the creative possibilities of the Canon 5D Mark II camera for shooting film. He has described it as a “game changer” because the platform is uniquely suited to both commercials and features due to its small size and infinite versatility.

A wonderful sense of humor and memorable personality are Shane’s most endearing traits. He is passionate about making moving images come to life, thinks quickly to generate a solution to the myriad of challenges that arise when shooting and is always able to make it work.

In this episode, Shane talks about his background, how he became interested in film making, the first project that he used the HD DSLR’s on, initial problems, unexpected surprises, hardware that had to be invented to use them, and projects that he’s currently working on. In addition, he covers how these cameras are going to change not only the film industry, but still photography, as well as whether it’s better to just get a good HD Cam, or bite the bullet and buy the accessories needed to shoot video on the HD DSLR’s.

The Focus Ring returns with a new format where each contributor submits 2 of their own images to discuss the topic of Light & Shadow. Contributors Chris Marquardt (Tips from the Top Floor), Jeff Curto (The History of Photography and Camera Position), Martin Bailey (Martin Bailey Photography Podcast) and Ibarionex Perello (The Candid Frame & Shooting with Alas) join together to discuss the importance of shadow in the creation of a successful photograph. The diverse selection of photographs can be found below.

Focus Ring Ep. 18

Let us know what you think of that format and what topics you might be interested in hearing discussed on the show. And yes, I realize I announced the show as being episode #13 when it’s actually #18. It reminds me that there was a lot of dust on this old podcast. If I get a good response to the program, I hope to produce these once a month.

LensFlare 35 is a weekly show brought to you by Dave Warner. In this week’s episode, Dave interviews Conservation Photographer Daniel Beltrá. Daniel is a Spanish photographer based in Seattle. He brings the sensibility and craft of a news photographer to the fields of nature and the environment, making images which he hopes will spur greater respect and conservation of those subjects. He has documented several expeditions by Greenpeace to the Brazilian Amazon, the Arctic, the Southern Oceans and the Patagonian Ice Fields, among many others.

This year, Daniel was awarded the Prince’s Rain Forest Project given via the Sony World Photography Awards. The award, granted by Prince Charles, sent Daniel for three months to the Congo, Amazon and Indonesian rain forests to create photos for a book, website and traveling exhibition about the perilous fate that the world’s rain forests face.

In this episode, Daniel talks about being a photojournalist in Spain, the things that caused him to convert to conservation photography, the Prince’s Rain Forest Project, the environment, Greenpeace, and what it was like to be ABC News’ Person of the Week.

LensFlare 35 is a weekly show brought to you by Dave Warner. In this week’s episode, Dave interviews Canon Photographer Aggie Villanueva. Aggie lived in rural New Mexico’s Madrid/Cerillos area without water, electricity or plumbing, hauling water by hand, the only light the kerosene lamp, with no phones or cell phone. She spent those years roaming the mountains, sometimes sleeping on the ground under the vast, crystal expanse of southwestern skies; sometimes in her van.

In 2001 she moved to an even more remote sector, into a tiny log cabin in the foothill forests of the San Pedro Wilderness area, getting snowed in for most of every winter, but with the luxury of “water pouring right out the wall when she turned the knob.”

In this episode, Aggie talks about her nickname and background, why she decided to be so remote and what every photographer can learn from that experience (one that is clearly NOT for every photographer), things she learned from that isolation, her work, Aggie Logic, her virtual photo shoots, where her work is being shown, and how she uses social media to promote it.

There are a lot of tutorials out there for “The Other Program”, also called Adobe(R) Photoshop(R). (I hope I got the Rs right, can’t find the page where Adobe(R) told the world how to call this program.) A lot of that stuff is easily translated to GIMP, but there are some serious differences. One are the “Adjustment(R) Layers(R)”. This is a way of applying a curve, gradient, hue or saturation change….. without changing the real image. You can come back later and tweak the curve or the slider – non destructive editing.

There is an easy way to work around this: make a new layer of the visible image and work on that. You have to redo that, if you decide to change something in the lower layers.

To show how to do this I have ripped out a part of John Arnold’s Photowalkthrough podcast and redone the same in GIMP. Photowalktrough is a really good resource for everybody who is into the digital darkroom – independent from the program used. And John has his #100 out! Congratulations!

GIMP will have non destructive editing in a year or two – it’s the main reason for getting GEGL into GIMP and making this big effort of writing a lot of the program again.

In the second part of the show I get the blackboard out and start a new segment in the show. I try to explain how film and sensors are working. I’ll expose you to some of these lessons for about 5 to 190 minutes and will then decide upon your reaction if I should keep this on. I’ll have them at the end of the show – if you are bored you can just skip the rest.
