The main purpose for IT Certification with desktop publishing is to show that you have adequate skills to take on consulting projects in the area of computer graphics or layouts. The first type of concentration you can have is with delivering effective presentations for your business area. You can do this not only by creating documentation, such as newsletters and flyers, but also by using technology effectively when you have to give a report or a speech. Desktop publishing can make sure that the presentation of your material is organized and has the visual materials to represent what you are speaking about.

The details of desktop publishing rely on making a presentation that is varied. This will include varieties of layouts. For example, if you want to present text by a graphic, or if you want to change the text in the presentation, you can use these publishing tools. You will also be able to manipulate things like color in order to prepare an effective presentation of materials. Not only can you get a beginning certification in this area, but you can also advance in these certifications, allowing you to take several levels of the class.

The first type of desktop publishing that is available is known as Adobe. This program has a large variety of software that can be used for your purposes. They are known for providing those using the material with a professional looking layout that can then be posted on the Internet or sent to someone through virtual use. For example, you can create flyers that can then be posted on an Internet site or sent to someone to give them information. You can also create images for a Web site. Adobe will also allow you to present things such as catalogs to present your information to others in a professional manner.

Adobe Certification is divided into three areas.

The first is known as Adobe Acrobat. This particular type of presentation software focuses around presenting text in a professional manner. You can not only present your text over these files on the Internet, but can also send them to others to edit. Through the tools that are available on Adobe Acrobat, you can use professional tools to revise and improve your text. You can also turn security features on in documents that you create in Acrobat.

The second type of Adobe Certification is known as Adobe Frame Maker. This not only allows you to apply text to a certain area, but also allows you to add in varied formats, graphics and objects. FrameMaker will also give you the ability to have page layouts that differ from regular presentations.

The last type of Adobe Certification that you can focus on is known as Adobe Page Maker. This has all of the above qualities of the other ones, and also provides you with ways to present your material in a publication manner. This allows you to convert your text to HTML, or computer language format. It also provides color and text manipulation. This program is often used for things such as publishing e-books.

Ink jet printers are extremely high quality printers that are very reliable and extremely affordable for home printing. Many ink jet printers that are sold on the market cost less than $100 brand new and some cost less than $40. If you are looking to buy a printer here are some tips.

Ink jet printers are very popular and can be used for printing out document, digital photos and map directions. Many people love their ink jet printers because they offer fast, reliable black & white and color printing. The only downside to ink jet printing is usually the cost of the ink jet cartridge.

Most ink jet cartridges can cost $30 or more. For people that print a lot, the cost of the cartridge can usually exceed the printer in less than one year. If you use your printer a lot especially for black & white printing, look to laser printers for cost per page efficiency.

Ink jet printers are great for documents and digital photos. Today you can get an ink jet printer that prints extremely high quality photos straight from your computer or even from your digital camera with the help of wireless Bluetooth technology. There are many models on the market that focus on photo printing. So if you are looking to buy a printer, choose inkjet jet printers.

You are right if you think it is dangerous and more so it is all over ever ready to sport its tarnishing attack! Current statistical records verify that almost 90 percent of the personal computers housed inside the homes of the users and most especially those that are used for the purpose of networking businesses are now vehemently invaded by spyware software and several other intimidating programs. These launches of the spyware software often results to menacing and disturbing occurrences such as identity theft, loss of files, hacked accounts, and many others.

With McAfee, the description of the spyware software goes as any software that clandestinely crawls and passes on any company or personal data to a third persona. When these informations are sent out, the third party can now start its use in an illegal manner without you actually knowing it! There is no exact and determined time when do spyware softwares haunch your system as you may not be able to precisely detect them. The worst part is that though your computer is endowed with an anti spy software program, it is likewise unable to track the presence of the spyware software! Indeed, the spyware software are intrinsically damaging as these superfluous programs can not just disrupt and pose threats into your business systems but can likewise serve to open the entryway towards the slowing down of your once fast internet access, exhibit an identity theft, send out severe corruption to both the network and the system, reduce the healthy system productivity, and then start up the presence of the bunches of pop-up ads that usually bulk your computer files and interrupt with your daily work and routine.

You may not be branded as a technical professional but it doesn't show that there is not a must for you to be aware of this concern. You are surely gravely affected by this thing. You simply do not know the exact time and the manner as to which it will launch its attack. It will be helpful on your part to get some crash course with regards to how the spyware software works and set out its disastrous tricks. For a much comprehensive understanding of the topic, spyware software is indeed a hazardous beast that scythes and records you're every single keystroke, passwords entered, the sites you've visited, the entire history of your credit card numbers, all of your chat conversations, and other significant confidential and private information. Spyware software collects the user's details as they are typed into the computer. To make it short, all of the activities that you perform on your monitor are clearly seen and observed by the spy–that is none other than the existing spyware software that acts as a director in your network system.

By all means you can safeguard yourself against the spyware software. An always restructured anti spy software program will obviously save you from the worst and most annoying consequences brought about by the spyware software attack. Be extremely careful when you get downloads from the well-known advertised anti spyware software programs offered for free as you may never know the potential risk you are imposing on your entire computer system. Furthermore, do avoid the very suspicious websites and some pop-up ads. You should always be on guard and never take chances.

Data security, especially on mobile devices like cell phones and Blackberries, needs an increase in the level of seriousness given, especially with people doing shopping and business transactions online, and with the lines of technology blurring so much between devices. For instance, email doesn't have to be sent on a computer anymore. Cell phones can be used for email and text messaging. Blackberries combine many functions of computers and cell phones, and are becoming quite common in the business world and for personal use as well.

The need for further security is exemplified in the passing of a California law. This law requires businesses to report to consumers' breaches in their data security resulting in the loss of personal information, like names, social security numbers, driver's license numbers, debit card and credit card numbers, and California state ID card numbers. Some companies have been in the news in recent years when these security breaches occurred. Companies involved include Bank of America, DSW Shoe Warehouse, Household Bank, LexisNexis and even MasterCard and Visa through a third party company. However, it may not be that there are more security breaches these days. It may simply be that the companies are now reporting security breaches that they ignored in the past. Currently the law requires that all businesses that do business in California report all security breaches. Most companies are reporting this information to all of their customers rather than just those who live in California to err on the side of safety.

The situation is serious enough that Congress in 2005 began to look at enactment of a federal law to apply the same requirements on the entire nation. One such bill was introduced by Senator Diane Feinstein and is patterned after the California law. In addition, several states have enacted very similar laws that require businesses and government agencies to report security breaches quickly. Currently the states of Georgia, Minnesota, Montana and North Dakota have these laws and other states are considering them.

Why should security of mobile technology be of such concern? The same reason that your computer security should be of concern. Unscrupulous individuals : crooks in other words : if they get a hold of your personal information, this can make you the victim of fraud or identity theft. With cell phones crooks "clone" cell phone numbers and sell them as clean and untraceable back to the user. These people make calls on your cell phone account without even having your phone in their possession, and you get the bill. People who commit identity theft can buy cars in your name, get credit cards, or use your credit or debit card. They have been known to clean out people's bank accounts quite quickly indeed. In addition to the loss of money, it can take months to straighten out the identity theft mess and get your personal credit rating back in the same shape it was in before the incident happened.

The public deserves protection from the dangers imposed by security breaches, whether that protection is given to them by government agencies or by businesses themselves doing the right thing. Everyone involved in collection and dissemination of confidential information needs to take extra care to be certain that such information does not get into the hands of those who would misuse it. Individuals also need to take steps to increase their own personal security. Memorizing passwords and PINs, personal identification numbers, and not writing them down is a good first step. Imagine having the PIN for your checking account in your wallet, along with your debit card and having both stolen. A thief would have immediate access to your money, but if you had the PIN memorized and not written down, the money would be safe. Also take care with important numbers like bank account numbers, credit card numbers, and your social security numbers. Crooks intent on committing fraud or identity theft love to get a hold of those numbers and many of them can do you financial harm, so keep them safe. Also, be careful of who is listening when speaking on a cell phone and giving out important numbers. That stranger could be an identity thief, so take care when you speak.

Most operating systems are designed to be used without support, but sometimes users will have questions that they need answered.

Luckily, most operating systems have built-in support tools. For example, Microsoft Windows has various help menus that allow you to search help topics by keywords. If you are having trouble with your memory and need to know how to delete items to free up some space, just bring up the help menu and type in "increase memory". This will bring up various help topics that can assist you with your needs.

The Mac OS X operating system also has built-in support tools for user to take advantage of. In fact, the Mac OS was one of the first operating systems designed to have internal support for problems and questions that users might have. It also was designed to be user-friendly and to give answers to the most commonly asked questions.

Another way for you to find support for your operating system is to go online. The companies that design operating systems will have websites that will probably display help sections including frequently asked questions to help answer your own questions. Their websites will probably also have helpful articles as well as tips and tricks on how to best use your system.

They will probably also have help lines for you to call so you can talk to a live person. When you do this you should have detailed information about your specific problem as well as documentation regarding your system specifications and versions, etc. The people who man these hotlines are very knowledgeable about their systems and will be able to help you with any question or problem you might be having.

As we said before, operating systems are designed to be user-friendly so the likelihood that you will need outside support for your operating system is not huge. With the built-in support tools, you will probably be able to find answers to any problems or questions you might be having. The programmers realize that computer users may need a little support from time to time and they have designed operating systems with this in mind.

Data loss can be a very costly problem for most companies. This problem can crop up at any time even though how many precautions any company takes to prevent such a thing from occurring.

Data loss can come in many forms and can be caused by a number of things. Data loss can come in the form of a sudden inability to access data from a previously functioning computer system. It can also come in the form of accidental deletion of data or overwriting files. Data loss can also come from files that have been corrupted and become inaccessible due to physical equipment damage or operating system problems.

If a person can no longer access a drive on his PC or can no longer read a floppy disk, he may be experiencing a data loss problem. If you experienced your company server crashing and cannot serve data into the company network, then your company might be in the process of losing some of its valuable data. If a set of files that you have backed up on a digital tape can no longer be restored, then you might possibly lose some of your files.

When you or your company has experienced data loss problems and may want to recover those lost files, you may need the help of a data recovery company in order to help you retrieve some lost data from your system. These companies are experts in helping corporations avert further data loss problems and recover damaged or lost files still valuable for the company. Data loss cannot be completely prevented because it can be caused by a lot of things. Just bumping a computer or moving it while in use can sometimes already cause some hard disk problems that may result in data loss. Manufacturing defects and design flaws can also be a cause of data loss and can only be identified once a defective part breaks down. Even sudden changes in extreme temperatures are enough to cause data loss in computers.

To further prevent such losses from becoming critical, it is wise to seek the assistance of a data recovery company. Depending on what caused the data loss, recovery may take time and can be a highly technical problem that only experts could remedy. A data recovery company can help in helping you or your company recover vital files lost through accidental deletion, erasure or equipment breakdown. To some people, computer system data loss may not have some remedies on hand once any equipment breaks down. Not to data recovery experts. They have the expertise needed in order to turn any data loss problem around. They can make use of several data recovery tools and special equipment in order to retrieve valuable data and files still contained in your damaged hard drives or computer system.

A data recovery company can even retrieve hard to reach files from RAID arrays, tape or optical media and even on corrupted databases from multi-user business computer systems. Data recovery companies have the data recovery tools always on hand to help you find a solution to your data loss problem. Seeking their help is a wise decision that will assure your lost files can still be recovered and further disaster prevented.

Trying to pick out the worst five computer viruses is much like giving a person a choice of execution methods: firing squad, hanging, electrocution, gas chamber, all are hideous. But let's talk about a few of the most well known offenders.

The Sasser and Netsky works were created by an 18 year old named Sven Jaschan, a native of Waffensen, Germany. Jaschan was a member of what was called the Skynet Gang, a group of hackers who enjoyed writing these works, which authorities say delivered a crushing blow to corporate networks and internet users around the world. Police said that the Skynet Gang delivered the most significant virus attacks in 2004. Other worms that have caused great harm are the FunLove and SirCam worms, which arrive in a person's email box and can send themselves to different users in a computer's address book. Another notorious worm was CodeRed, which jumped from one computer to another.

Worms and viruses have caused so much Internet traffic when replicating themselves that the entire Internet has slowed down, bogged down and almost ground to a halt. Trying to protect your computer? The first step is always a good anti virus program. You may well have received a trial copy of one of the better anti virus programs when you purchased your computer. Among the good programs to use are McAfee's Viruscan and Virex, Symantec's Norton AntiVirus, Trend Micro's PC-cillin, and AVG. After installing your anti virus software the next step is to keep it up to date. An out of date anti virus program can be even more dangerous to you than not having a virus program at all. The false sense of security provided by the old, out of date program can lead to unwarranted confidence. Keep your software updated often.

Remember that it wasn't that long ago that millions of computer users checked their email one morning and found their inbox filled with notes, bearing the subject line the inscription "I love you." This was the I Love You virus, also known as the Love Bug, a dastardly and fiendish program that preyed on human nature by disguising itself as a love note, with an email attachment. People were not use to viruses when the Love Bug came out. Most people would open email attachments at will, with no regard for safety. It was the computer equivalent of the 1970's, before the AIDS crisis made people aware of the need for safe sex. The Love Bug worked its way around the world, attacking Disney World, attacking the Pentagon, attacking major corporations and government networks, and messing with literally millions of computer users. The world was never the same again.

The Love Bug and other worms point out another method of protecting yourself against these threats. In addition to the use of anti virus software, common sense may be the best weapon. If you receive an email with an attachment, don't open the attachment. Only open attachments that you are expecting, arriving from people you know and trust.

One question that most people have when it comes to viruses and worms is this: why do people create them? What kind of social outcast would spend his time, and expend his mental energy to create a computer virus that has as its purpose destruction of other people's computes, costing them time and money and endless frustration. What kind of person would do that?

Authorities believe that hackers who create computer viruses are usually above average in intelligence, but socially disaffected. They are the same personalities who often abuse drugs and a few years ago would have been out getting into trouble and being chased by the police. In the modern age they can sit at home on a computer causing more grief that would be possible in the real world in person. Many hackers write the viruses and then post them on web sites for others to pick up and use, much like a rogue state buying guns for a terrorist organization. But as the world's police organizations become more sophisticated, more and more of these cyber terrorists are being caught and punished. In the meantime, take all steps possible to keep your computer safe from cyber attack.

Transferring data to other computers can be simple. Here are some great tips.

There are a few ways to transfer large blocks of data, by either USB flash drive, media card or CD and DVD media. USB flash drives are great at transporting files and swapping data across computers. USB flash drives are very small, about the size of a keychain and can hold anywhere from 256MB to 2 GB of data.

Media cards are the cards that you usually take pictures on, but most media cards can also hold and transfer large amounts of data. They are easily read on computer memory card readers and are super small and light weight. Most memory cards can hold between 256 MB and 2 GB of data.

For heavy data loads, use CD or DVD media. CD's can hold about 700 MB of data and DVD media can hold a whopping 4.7 GB of data. It takes only a few minutes to record data onto a CD or DVD and they are extremely easy to use. So if you need to transfer large amounts of data from one computer to another, use some of the above products.

While an operating system is a central part of your computer system, knowing the definition of an operating system is not integral to knowing how to use one. However, when you do know the definition of an operating system, you can better understand what it is doing inside your computer to make it run and to make using it easier for you.

In its basic form, the definition of an operating system is as follows: a set of computer programs that manage the hardware and software resources of a computer system. We can add to that definition to say that an operating system rationally processes electronic devices in response to approved commands.

At the foundation of all system software, an operating system performs basic tasks such as controlling and allocating memory, prioritizing system requests, controlling input and output devices, facilitating networking, and managing file systems.

Most operating systems have a command line interpreter as a basic user interface, but they may also provide a graphical user interface (GUI) for ease of operation. The operating system forms a platform for other system software and for application software.

At a more involved level, the definition of an operating system gets a little more involved when you explore what the operating system does inside of your computer. Here are some of the most common tasks:

* Process Management - Every program running on a computer is a process. In general, a CPU can only run one process at a time. The operating system will monitor requested processes and execute them in a pre-designed order often switching between them very quickly in a way called multi-tasking.
* Memory Management - The operating system's memory manager coordinates the various types of memory use by tracking which one is available at any given time. It will also monitor which type of memory can be allocated or de-allocated and how to move data between the memories.
* Disk and File Systems - The way an operating system reads different kinds of file system as well as file storage likes in the way the files are named. Some operating systems read file names as case sensitive, while others disregard this.
* Security - All operating systems come with some type of security already built in. Because access to a computer and its often privileged information should be restricted to only authorized users, this aspect of an operating system might actually be its most important function.
* Networking - In the Internet age, networking capabilities of operating systems are very important. Networking capabilities can be either with an outside computer as in accessing the Internet or computer to computer as in a large mainframe operation. The operating system will coordinate all of this below the surface without the user even being aware it is happening.

The definition of an operating system can be simple or it can be more involved. Either way, knowing how your operating system is running your computer can be a very important part of being a responsible computer user.

The question is, "can you be tracked down on the internet?"

Your IP address is no secret. It's a basic part of internet communication protocols to send your IP address whenever you connect to another site, request a web page, chat, play an online game, etc. Without your IP address, the computer on the other end wouldn't know where to send the reply.

But that doesn't mean that Evildoers can find your house if they know your IP address. Each time you go online (if you have dialup) or each time you start your computer (Cable or DSL) you are assigned an IP address, randomly selected from a pool of IP's assigned to your Internet service provider (ISP).

So a person MIGHT be able to get a general idea of your geographic location, based on your IP address, by doing a lookup on the WHOIS database, but that will only tell them the physical location of your ISP — not YOUR home address.

And if you use a large regional or nationwide ISP, the IP lookup probably reveals nothing of interest. For example, if you are an AOL subscriber, your IP address lookup will show the location as Dulles, Virginia — regardless of where you live.

There is an exception to every rule. If a stranger calls your ISP and wants to know who was using a certain IP address last Tuesday, the ISP will tell them to go away. But if an officer of the law hands your ISP a court order to reveal that information, they must do so. Your ISP's logs will enable them to determine which customer was using a certain IP address on a certain date & time, and they must reveal that information if a court has found probable cause for criminal activity.

But for the truly paranoid (or the criminally inclined) there are ways to surf the web anonymously. There are services that will act as a proxy between you and your ISP, and they claim that your information cannot be subpoenaed because they do not store it.

What About Email Addresses?
The same concepts apply to your email address. The part that follows the "@" sign is your ISP's domain name. And given the domain name, one can determine the ISP's physical location, but nothing personally identifying about the email user without a court order.
Web-based email accounts are not truly anonymous, either. Even if you don't provide your real name when signing up, they can capture your IP address and track you through your ISP if necessary.

The information is usually sent to the spyware creator via your internet connection without your knowledge. In order for it to work correctly, it must be able to run without the user shutting the computer down. Being hidden also helps the program to get installed in the first place. Because of this, spyware is usually disguised as a Trojan horse. This is a program that quietly runs in the background, inviting the user to run it, while spreading its malicious code. This code can do any number of things. It can start right away or it may simply install a program that won't start for sometime. Once it does start, it can delete all of the files on the computer or it can infect the computer and try to infect other computers on the network. There are a number of ways spyware is delivered, and as a Trojan horse is the most common. It usually comes with other pieces of software that a user might find interesting. This software is usually shared through a file-sharing network or downloadable off of the internet. Once the user installs the software, the spyware also gets installed.

The most common reason spyware is infecting computers is for the profit of the spyware creator. In most cases, it gets information about the computer user and shows them pop-up ads related to their needs. It can even redirect internet search engine results to the benefit of the spyware creator. In addition to these things, spyware can infect your e-mail address book. Once this occurs, spam will be sent to every single person in every single infected address book. This spam will usually be an advertisement of some sort for the spyware creator's website. Once infected with spyware, the creator can also profit from it by stealing important information like bank account information, credit card numbers, or contact information. It can steal the password information for your software licensing. Spyware can also take control of your modem to make expensive telephone calls from the creator. There are currently five major spyware threats to your internet security.

The first major spyware threat is Gator or GAIN. This program displays banner and pop-up ads based on your internet surfing habits. It comes bundled with many popular software programs. The major difference between Gator and most other spyware programs is that users are clearly notified of its download before it occurs.

Another major spyware threat is CoolWebSearch. This spyware can do a number of things. First, it can hijack your current internet settings, making things display wrong, and causing other system problems. It can reset your homepage, and despite the number of times you try to change it, you will be unable to reset it to your desired site. It can also take over your web searches, displaying only advertiser sites when you search for information on web items. It installs bookmarks to pornographic websites in your "Favorites" menu. It can cause your system to continually reboot. It can also cause serious system slow downs.

The third major spyware threat is 180searchassistant. This program has both pop-up and pop-under ads based on the user's search terms. Moreover, once a site is clicked on, a new browser window opens to display more advertisements based on the search terms. It constantly updates by itself, and it can display pop-up ads even when the internet is not running. It can cause system slow downs.

The fourth major spyware threat to your internet security is ISTbar. This spyware program displays pornographic pop-ups, even when the internet is not in use. It can hijack your browser settings, reset your homepage, and cause continual cascading pop-ups while you are using the internet. It will continually download related files without your knowledge. Moreover, it can cause system slow downs.

The final major spyware threat to your internet security is Internet Optimizer. This program redirects your computer to its advertising sites. It also downloads and continually updates itself without your knowledge. The worst part about this spyware, though, is it leaves a back door open to your system so other viruses can penetrate your defenses.

I just had, by mistake, a plug-in called Intelligent Explorer attach to my browser. What a nightmare! I have another article on this topic, but this brings home a point. Spyware or adware items are continually infecting computers. Most computers have no protection from them. Most frightening is the frequency of them. From the InfosecWriters web site, "According to a 2004 survey by America Online and the National Cyber Security Alliance, 91% of users questioned were familiar with the term spyware. Only 53% believed their computers were infected, but a scan found that 80% of their PCs had some type of spyware installed on them." It goes on to say, "…The average number of spyware components per computer was 93 with one computer having well over a thousand."

What is Spyware?

Butte College (www.bctv.butte.edu/support/spyware.html) offers this definition:

"The term 'spyware' is broadly defined as any program that gets into your computer without permission and hides in the background while it makes unwanted changes to your user experience.
Spyware is generally not designed to damage your computer. The damage it does is more a by-product of its main mission, which is to serve you targeted advertisements or make your browser display certain sites or search results.
At present, most spyware targets only the Windows operating system (Internet Explorer)."

To be fair, spyware can be harmless, for example tracking cookies don't do much. While such things infringe on your privacy, they don't really harm anything. Others, however, are extremely dangerous.

So what do you do about it?

No spyware program seems to do everything, but there are a lot of goods solutions out there that can help. Here is a list of some of the top Spyware tools to look at:

1) Try Ad-Aware 6.0 Professional from LavaSoft (there is also a free version with less functionality)

2) Spybot Search & Destroy from PepiMK Software

3) Xoftspy form Pareto Logic

5) Spyware Guard from Javacool Software is a free program

4) Pest Patrol (now part of Computer Associates by acquisition)

5) McAfee Anti-Spyware

One thing is for certain: you do need to take spyware seriously. For some reason, too many people out there think anti-virus solutions are the end-all solution. They are not.

And, when all else fails?

Finally, as drastic as it seems, if your computer has been infected with a large number of spyware programs, the only solution you may have is backing up your data, and performing a complete reinstall of the operating system.

Even though they may be a big help with some cases, there are other times when they don't do anything. In the event of software programs not being able to recover your lost data, you can count on professional services to be there for you.

As we all know, the process of data recovery is very time consuming and requires quite a bit of technical prowess in order to recover the data that has been lost. If the recovery is performed in the wrong way, it can lead to the hard drive being damaged beyond repair, and quite possibly the information that was stored on the hard drive to be lost forever.

Even though you may know quite a bit about computers and hard drives, data recovery is something that is best left to professionals. They have all the equipment and knowledge to recover files, without bringing more damage to the hard drive. They can also recover any type of file that was on your hard drive, even preview the files before they recover them. This way, they will be able to go over with you which files you wish to be recovered.

Professional services can also offer you is the emergency boot media. This methods allows you to recover any data from computers that cannot boot Windows due to a failure, virus, damage to the hard drive, or loss of data. This is ideal for times when your computer will start up, although it doesn't want to load Windows. Normally, this method can bring everything back to your hard drive, in a matter of minutes.

Professional data recovery specialists offer a variety of services and skills to help you recover any data that you have lost. They work with hard drives on a daily basis, and know everything that they can and can't do. Even though you may be able to do it yourself, you also have to look at the time it takes as well. Professional services have the time to put into the recovery process, as they do it for a living. Recovery takes a lot of time - which is something that many of us simply do not have.

Anytime your hard drive crashes or you experience a loss of data, you can always count on professional data recovery services to retrieve your data. Although it may take a few days or even a few weeks, you'll get your data back. They can retrieve any or all of your files, no matter how bad the hard drive may be damaged. Even though it may appear there is no hope for your lost files - professional data recovery services can make it happen.

Instant messaging has grown in popularity in this fast paced world. If you are corresponding with someone via emails, there are certain steps you need to take. You will click on the e-mail, read it, reply to it, and send it back. Then you wait for the e-mail you just sent to be opened and you have no way of knowing if the person you are emailing is still on line or at their computer. Instant messaging cuts out many steps and provides instant communication with any of your contacts that are on-line.

Instant messaging programs allow you to have a list of key people that you want to interact with. Called a buddy or contact list, you will know when your buddy is on-line and can type messages back and forth as in real time. There is also the added benefit now of being connected to your buddy by web cam. This is a wonderful invention when it comes to children and grandchildren far from home. I love to see my granddaughters who live on the West Coast. It allows them to see my face and keep me fresh in their memory.

Instant messaging offers many advantages including chatting between friends on line, and creating your own chat room with family and friends. You can share web links to your favorite sites, play sounds to your friends and share files and photos. Many IM users use the computer instead of long-distance phone calls to talk to family and friends. One advantage to Instant Messaging that I like is that I can chat with more than one friend or family member at a time. The trick is to make sure you don't post a message in the wrong window!

Instant messaging, with many other innovations on the Internet can sometimes carry a security risk. Without security measures, some users could potentially expose sensitive data and information to outsiders. Virus protection programs don't scan these instant messaging files and that causes a real threat.

There are three basic ways that Instant Messaging can compromise your Internet security. One concern is that because you are unable to verify whom you are talking to, you could be giving out information to a competitor or someone intent on harming your or your computer. The second is, worms and viruses can be sent through Instant Messages, and Stealth programs can gain access to your computer and all your information. Third, it is easy to eavesdrop on IM conversations. If you have the computer knowledge, and many do, they can listen in on your chat conversations and learn important information that you would prefer to be kept private.

There are security choices when it comes to protecting your instant messages from being pirated. Some large and small companies are banning all Instant Messaging from company computers. They can install closed IM programs that will allow instant messaging as a useful tool within the company but keep out the threats from outside. Some companies are storing all instant messages sent and are able to pull them up and view them. If an employee is using an open IM to chat with their wife then the company is at risk for viruses and hacking. Software developers have created special software programs to make IM possible between company computers but no outside messages can be sent or received.

Monitoring of all company instant messages is widely used to combat the use of Instant Messaging for personal use and wasting company time. This allows small companies as well as the large ones to monitor what their employees are doing with their time. Companies are using archived instant messages to discourage sexual harassment and other workplace behavior, which is unacceptable.

Instant messaging is a wonderful tool but can expose your computer to viruses or worms. If you receive an instant message from someone you aren't familiar with, it's a good idea to not click on any links that are provided. The message may look like it comes from a friend but could harbor a virus or worm by downloading an applet that can install Trojan programs and install Spyware and adware. One popular link allows you to play a game, which pretends to catch Bin Laden. Computer operators who clicked on the game downloaded a program that snatched all of their IM contacts and sent them the same e-mail.

Protect your chats by being aware of the dangers. Don't' click on hyperlinks that you don't recognize. Check your antiviral news page for current threats to instant messaging programs. As with all computer programs and innovations, common sense will help to protect your computer's security.

Who you are you going to call? Or better yet, what is the best thing to do? The answer? Free spyware downloads.

In these days of hackers and viruses, the only defense you can ever have are spyware removers. It does not matter if you have the best and the most expensive computer. All your important files and data can be exposed to risk in a matter of seconds. All that is needed is for the spyware to get an access into them.

There are other grave issues that have been associated with spyware. Consider yourself lucky if you have become a victim of one that only targeted files and database. Some of the more unfortunate individuals had been victims of identity thefts because of spyware.

Just imagine what it feels like being credited for something that you are not even aware of. There are even cases wherein their accounts have been wiped out without them knowing about it. Only to be discovered later on when they are charged or upon purchase using these cards.

These are just some of the examples of what spyware can do to your computer and to you. If you do not want to fall prey into and become a part of the victims, then you should consider spyware removal.

How do you choose one?

The first thin that you need to do is choose from among the many free spyware downloads available. The easiest way to get them is online. A lot of sites are offering these programs with different varieties.

Before you decide on one, it is best to check out some of the offers that you think is best. Compare their features and capabilities. In addition, take into mind the kind of need that you have. Is it just simple spyware? Or is it something that needs more advanced methods of removal? Whatever requirement it is that you have, there is always one or two out there that will serve your purpose well.

What spyware removal is available online?

When you search on the internet, you will be given choices of spyware downloads that you can get for free. Most of these are offered as free trials and for computer users to have an initial taste of what their programs can do.

Majority of these free spyware downloads can be upgraded so that you will have you very own spyware removal software. For a minimal fee, you will get to enjoy the benefits that the software can do for your computer.

You can have as many spyware programs as you want if you feel that one is not enough. The initial cost that you have to pay will be worth it once you see that you are well protected from any further harm that your computer may encounter.

The thing to remember is that you get the free spyware download from a reputable and trusted site. There are fake spyware removals out there also. You probably would not want to gain more problems when you want them solved in the first place.

Ask those who have availed of free spyware downloads. They will be the ones who can point you in the right direction of which spyware to get. Take the time to look and ask around before you decide on one.

Millions of dollars were fraudulently stolen from merchants and credit card companies. While many inroads have been made, there are still certain problems with fraud online.

Today many companies have stepped up and offered guarantees that if fraud occurs while you buy or sell a product, you are covered up to a certain limit. For most people this is great news. Not only does it help them limit their liability but also adds confidence to their online shopping habits. If you are either a buyer or merchant, here are ways you can shop and sell with confidence.

Many people choose to shop with Paypal, and many merchants like to accept Paypal as their payment processor. Paypal is different from many credit card processors. Paypal stores all of the merchants and buyers data on their own servers. When a buyer makes a purchase to a merchant, the credit card information and bank information never gets passed along to the merchant or buyer, all the financial and personal data always stays securely on Paypal's server. This is great for lots of people, which boost their confidence that neither the buyer or seller now has important personal information.

Credit card companies have also stepped up and offered limited liability on all transactions. For instance, American Express covers you against online fraud. If you buy something and get over charged or never receive your item, you are covered. So for confident online shopping, check out the above products.

Each time you put new hardware or software on your system, or you reinstall programs or hardware on your system, information about that install is placed in your system's Registry. The system Registry is a log of everything that happens on the computer in terms of programs, services, and processes. Even if you follow all of the recommended steps to uninstall the software or hardware in the future, bits and pieces may be left behind in the Registry. It is essential that you clean your Registry because the redundant and useless entries can wreak havoc on your system's stability. They can slow the overall performance, and this can mean that you will have problems installing new software or hardware. Moreover, your computer is more likely to crash multiple times if you have never cleaned your registry. You are also more likely to encounter continuous error messages. Even if you clean up the bits and pieces programs leave behind after un-installation found in the "Program Files" folder, you still need to clean up the Registry keys and values. It is not a terribly difficult procedure. It is important, though, that you be very careful while cleaning. Deleting things from the Registry is permanent. It cannot be undone. If you delete something your system needs to run, you will be out of luck in terms of restarting your system.

You can start by searching your Registry to manually delete and eliminate all entries related to a recently uninstalled application. Open the Registry Editor and click on the My Computer icon in the left panel. Click Edit and Find. Put in a word that has some relation to the program you want to be sure is gone from your registry. You could put in the name of the program or the program's publisher. Be sure to check the box labeled "Keys, Values, and Data," then click "Find Next." Examine the first thing you find. If you do not need it, highlight and press delete. You will need to press your F3 key to continue. You should then repeat the process a few more times. After you have finished, a box will appear with the following message: "Finished searching through the Registry."

If you want to fully clean your Registry, though, you must also do so during the startup process. Windows launches all .exe files during startup and uses information contained in your computer's Registry.

You can see what is running by clicking on your "Start" button. Choose "Run" and type "msconfig" and hit enter to launch System Configuration Utility. Once you've done that, you will see a series of tabs. Click on the "Startup" tab, and you can see all the programs that are set to run during the startup process. Even though the actual files are stored on the hard drive, the instructions to run them are in the Registry. Even if the check to remove an application has been uninstalled, the Registry entry remains to clog your system.

The best way to get rid of this is to open the Registry editor. You want to click browse to HKEY_ LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run. That will help you see a list of programs that runs during startup. Simply highlight the programs you no longer want running at startup. Then press delete. The programs are now forever removed. If, however, the list of programs is pretty long, you may need to do some further registry editing to get rid of everything. There are a few other things you can check to get rid of those unwanted entries. Try HKEY_ CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Shared Tools \ MSConfig \ startupreg.

Just like you did before, highlight the entries you do not want, and delete them. You might also try taking a look at the Services section of the System Configuration Utility. These list the processes that are supposed to run while your version of Windows starts. These are not really registry keys, but they, like registry keys, can take up necessary space. They can slow down your system's performance. If you are uncomfortable editing your system's Registry yourself, and if you are an inexperienced computer user, you probably should ask someone for help or consider purchasing or downloading a program to help you. There are a number of shareware and freeware programs written specifically to help you clean your computer's Registry and make the most of your machine.

There are sites that prompt to install adware in computers while connected in the net. After installation it downloads advertising material to the computer while it is being used.

Once this adware is installed to the computer, the computer's security is at risk. Some of the adware often takes in the form of spyware. It tracks the user activity and sometimes re-sold without the consent of the user. Due to its privacy and security concerns, many computer users consider this as a threat.

Today, there are software companies that develop adware removal tools. Some of them are being sold by companies in their sites and some can be downloaded for free. Agency such as United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team or US-CERT suggests installing these adware removal tools.

Now how will you know that you are infected with adware or spyware? First, you will notice that when you're surfing the net you will experience the endless pop-up windows. Sometimes you are redirected to other site rather than what you typed into the browser. There are new toolbars appearing in the web browser and new icons that appear in the task bar at the bottom of the screen. There are also sudden changes like browser's homepage and when you click search, the search engine browser changes. You will also notice that the performance of your computer and the processing suddenly slow down.

The Adware Removal Tools were developed to remove, quarantine, and detect adware and spyware. By using this, your computer will be much safer from infection of adware. Some of the Adware Removal Tools are Ad-Aware by Lavasoft, SpySweeper by Webroot, Spyware Doctor by PC Tools, Spybot Search & Destroy and SpySubtract by Intermute. These software programs are engineered for antispyware detection and this would not work on viruses.

These adware programs can be downloaded in internet sites but you can purchase it or try the free version or demo version. Then, purchase the best adware removal for you. Be aware also of the free software that you download because some of them might be adware and spyware. And this may add up to your problem.

Now how can you prevent this adware from infecting your computer?

While browsing the internet, do not click pop-up windows that contain advertisements because these pop-up windows sometimes are product of adware or spyware. If you click this, it may install the adware software on your computer. So, if this happens, just close the pop-up window by clicking the 'X' in the title bar instead of close button within the window.

Always choose "no" when you are asked to perform a clean-up of your computer or just click the 'X' button to close the dialog box. Unexpected dialog boxes like this will not clean your computer; instead it will install adware application in your computer.

Beware of the different adwares that install to your computer. Set up your operating system to block pop-up windows where adware starts from. Install adware removal tools to be more secured and the performance of your computer can run more efficiently. Don't wait for this adware to infect your computer, once you prompt to install adware close it immediately.

A free operating system is one that is available to the general public. It is software that can be used, copied, studied, modified, and redistributed with little or no restriction. Therefore, software is free if its source code (the human readable form of the software) is available with a software license that grants recipients these permissions or if the source code is in the public domain.

The concept of free software came about as a reaction by several people who felt that big companies like Microsoft were limiting the software market by making their programs available only for a fee. They felt that computer usage should be free for everyone. That includes the software that comes with the computers.

Free operating systems have been in development for years. Free software, and especially free operating systems have a very high market penetration in server side Internet web applications. Completely free computing environments are available as large packages of basic system software as with the GNU or Linux operating systems.

Free software developers have also created free versions of almost all commonly used desktop applications such as web browsers, office productivity suites, and multimedia players. It is important to note, however, that in many categories, free software for individual workstation or home users has only a fraction of the market share of their proprietary competitors. Most free software is distributed online without charge, or off-line at the marginal cost of distribution, but this is not required, and people may sell copies for any price.

Large corporations are recognizing the economic advantages to offering up free operating systems. IBM, Red Hat, and Sun Micro Systems are endorsing free operating systems like Linux as a viable alternative to Windows or Mac OS X. They are using these operating systems as models for creating their own free software for distribution to the mainstream public.

When free operating systems are made available, you can certainly see the advantages that will result. Proprietary software - that which is sold - will probably have lower prices as the companies who develop that software will have to compete with the free movement. They will also have to develop newer and better products that will give them the operational capabilities that free software won't have.

There is some controversy over the free software movement as well as the distribution of free operating systems such as Linux or GNU. Opponents say the free operating systems can't offer the same security or capabilities that Windows, for example, can. However, there's no doubt about it that free software and free operating systems open up the computer world to new and radical ideas that can change the way we operate our computers.

As you surf the internet, you surely have encountered pop windows. Most likely you simple close them and keep going on with what you are doing. However, what you may not know is that closing those windows may be the worst thing you can do. The people who create pop up windows are sneaky and are certainly not out for your best interests. In many cases, what you think may be a simple move to rid yourself of an annoyance is really a way for you to end up with a virus or spyware on your computer.

You will find that many pop up windows and ads look like they are standard windows boxes. They have in them a message or alert and likely a button at the bottom. It usually asks something to the effect of "would you like your system scanned for spyware" and then offers you choices of buttons for "yes" and "no." Sometimes it's even an alert and only one "close window" button. Either way, you must be alert with these pop ups.

The boxes that show up on your screen may seem pretty innocent or even useful. Plus, you probably don't pay it much attention because you saw that there was a way to get rid of the box quickly by clicking "no" or "close window." The truth is that if you are getting a pop up in the first place, there is cause for concern. In most cases, those buttons are not what they appear to be. In a large number of cases, if you click either button or anything on the pop up, you will end up downloading a virus or some sort of spyware. So by simply trying to close the window, you are probably causing harm to your computer.

There is a proper way to click out of a pop up box. Many system security experts will tell you that you click on the "x" in the corner of the pop up window, instead of those option buttons it gives you. The only problem is that many of the windows will mimic that "X" and trap you once again. Remember to always be a little bit suspicious when it comes to pop up windows. Just the fact that someone is even using pop windows is reason to be very cautious of anything having to do with that window.

There is another option, and it is likely the one that will be the safest with any pop up window situation. The way is to find the pop up in your task bar. Move the curser over the window and right click it. You will get a menu and from that you can select "close." However, from time to time you may get a pop up that is not listed in your task bar. All is not lost in such a case. Simply right click on the task bar and you will get your task manager. Find the pop up in there and click the "shut down" option for that window. This will safely and easily rid you of the pop up without putting you in danger of accidentally downloading spyware or viruses onto your computer.

We live in an age of technology. With that technology, comes danger, because as with anything there are always people trying to take advantage. Viruses and spyware are certainly no exception. Even though you are most likely fully aware of the dangers of downloading software about which you are unsure, you may still be doing it without even knowing what you are doing. Often times, those annoying pop ups that spring up all over your screen as you surf the net are actually traps. You click the button to close or to say no and actually end up clicking a link to download spyware. There are, however, safer ways to close those windows. Whenever you are confronted with a pop up window on your screen, take precautions so that you do not end up with unwanted viruses or spyware on your computer.
