MANILA – A few months before the 2011-2012 academic year ends, Kabataan Party-List sponsored a consultative assembly in the House of Representatives regarding the issue of increasing tuition and related fees. The activity was held jointly with the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education. Organizers said the assembly was held in anticipation of the impending wave of proposed tuition increases in the coming summer session and school year.

Kabataan Rep. Raymond Palatino said his group conducted the assembly to provide a venue for students and stakeholders to voice their views on the increasing inaccessibility of higher education. He said these sectors should be able to participate in the crafting of regulatory guidelines to address the long-standing problem of unabated tuition and other fee increases in both private and public universities all over the country.

TORONTO -- The Philippines may have found its next sunrise industry in the medical tourism field.

A study titled “Philippine Medical Tourism Compendium 2011: Facts, Figures & Strategies” estimated that the country earned a total of $1.30 billion from health care and wellness services in the period of 2006 to 2010.

The study also projected that the Philippines has the potential to earn as much as $1 billion in additional annual revenue by 2018 or earlier if it would invest thoroughly on healthcare infrastructures, more open and liberal travel arrangements for medical tourists and lay down an extensive international marketing promotions campaign.

CHICAGO (jGLi) – Anna Lisa Raymundo wanted to be a Chief Executive Officer for some big companies one day. But her big dreams were snuffed away nine years ago by an Iranian American co-worker woman, who was obsessed with Anna Lisa’s boyfriend.

On Friday (Feb. 10) Anna Lisa’s co-worker, Sheila Sara Duvalloo, was convicted by a 16-person jury for the brutal stabbing of Anna Lisa less than two days after a jury deliberation that ended a two-week trial, chronicled by daily, Stamford Advocate.

“I just wanted to have closure on the death of my daughter,” Anna Lisa’s father, Dr. Renato Raymundo, told this reporter at the start of the trial.

CHICAGO (jGLi) – Manny and Marc Aguja are identical twins and they thought nobody could tell one from the other if one of them was away.
In fact, their sister, Servita Aguja-Aguilar, agrees that “growing up, Marc and Manny were inseparable. And they remain inseparable to this day – they are two sides of one coin.”

But Manny Aguja, a prominent Filipino American member of the Illinois bar, specializing in immigration cases, for more than ten years, made the mistake of telling his law office employee, Robert Insular, that when Insular “began working at the law firm, Manny Aguja and Marc Aguja told him that there was no Marc Aguja, only Manny Aguja.”

CHICAGO (jGLi) – Some Filipino Americans urged Sunday (Feb. 12) Philippine senator-judges in the current impeachment trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona to arrive at the truth first before coming to a decision to avoid a constitutional crisis.

Former Manila Bulletin provincial editor Tony Antonio, now publisher-editor of a twice-monthly Detroit’s suburb of Belleville, Michigan-based, Filipino Star News, welcomed in an editorial the stand taken by Senator-Judge Loren Legarda, who made “an encouraging statement when she said the sole basis of her decision will be the truth.”

MANILA -- Mrs. Marilou Japay or “Daday’ lives with her asthmatic husband and three children in a shanty in the South Pier area near Divisoria that has the shape and size of three toilet stalls placed horizontally. The walls are made of rusting roofing material, flattened muddied cardboard boxes and scratched wooden planks. The roof is also made of the same with the addition of torn pieces of old advertising tarpaulin banners and plastic packaging sheets. When it rains, water seeps through the cracks and holes in the makeshift roof, and it was only by some miracle that the last typhoon’s strong winds did not destroy the entire box-like structure.

The initiative is just another example of adverse trends facing the sector and more of this are likely to emerge as the crisis in the US and the rest of the world worsens in the coming years

The recent pronouncement by US Pres. Barack Obama to bring outsourcing jobs back to the US highlights the dangers of relying on business process outsourcing (BPO), and on foreign economies in general, for Filipino jobs. According to research group IBON, even if it is still unclear if Pres. Obama’s proposed “insourcing” legislation will pass, the vulnerability of the sector and the government’s misplaced attention to this is increasingly apparent.

NEW YORK -- The National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON) is calling on President Benigno Aquino III to assist more than 12,000 Filipinos who stand to be deported from the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) this year.

The CNMI is located in the western Pacific Ocean.Based on previous US census counts, Filipinos comprise almost 30 percent of all residents in the islands, surpassing even the total number of the native Chamorro people. There are an estimated 12,000 Filipino workers in CNMI who are now being threatened with deportation despite maintaining legal immigration status.

MANILA -- Environmental groups in Batangas are crying foul against dramatic actor and Batangas Provincial Board member Christopher de Leon ’s alleged support for mining operations in the region.

Saying that the recent tragedy of Typhoon ‘Sendong’ remains fresh in the minds of many, the Bukluran Para sa Inang Kalikasan (BUKAL) is appalled over how the local government has already approved and endorsed the operations of destructive large-scale mining in the province.

Bukal officials said they received a letter from the office of Governor Vilma Santos-Recto inviting its members to a meeting to discuss mining in Batangas. Earlier on, the group came upon a report released by CrazyHorse Limited, a Canadian Mining firm venturing in Gold-Exploration Project in Taysan, claiming that the firm has already secured the endorsement and approval from the Provincial Board. The endorsement, the company said, was settled May 11, 2011 through the passage of Provincial Board Resolution no. 253.

CHICAGO (jGLi) – The rape case filed by a 21-year-old woman against a 36-year-old Filipino immigrant has been dismissed after Circuit Court of Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas in Chicago, Illinois “found that there existed ‘No Probable Cause’” during preliminary hearing on Dec. 19, 2011.

A court order issued Dec. 30, 2011 was made available to this reporter Monday (Jan. 24) by Ms. Blanca E. Jara, public information manager of the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County.

CHICAGO (jGLi) – An ill-informed, if not ill-advised, wife of Philippine Senator Lito Lapid has enriched the coffers of the United States government again.

Instead of proudly informing the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) authorities that she was in possession of more than $50,000 in U.S. currency and more than 10,000 Philippine pesos (US$356.00) when she arrived in the U.S. last November, she underdeclared her cash declaration below US$10,000 even if there was nothing wrong in declaring the actual amount in her possession.

If it was true that Mrs. Marissa Tadeo Lapid was telling the CPB’s Albert G. Giangregorio, Special Agent for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), that she was applying “as a Lawful Permanent Resident” upon her entry into the US, her alibi that she was taking in US$50,137 and US$356 in foreign currency (Philippine pesos) would have been perfect and valid reason for her to carry such amount as she needed it to start a new life in America.

Teddy Casiño and Neri Colmenares have filed House Resolution 2049 to probe the alleged anomaly, and call on the Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability to conduct an inquiry on the irregularities involving the SC’s Judicial Reform Support Project (JRSP) funded by the World Bank.

According to an official briefing paper released by Malacañang on the JRSP issue, the JRSP aims to make the judicial system accessible in order to foster public trust and confidence. It supposedly aims to improve case adjudication and access to justice; enhance institutional integrity; strengthen institutional capacity; and assist in strengthening support for the reform process.

Schumer (D-NY) to serve as a judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

In a statement released January 23, Schumer said that when he selects judges, "I always look for three things - excellence, diversity, and moderation - and Schofield exemplifies all of these qualities. I'm pleased to recommend her to President Obama for the Southern District Bench."

There are five openings on the Southern District bench, and the White House has advanced nominations for two of them: Jesse Furman, the deputy chief appellate attorney in the Southern District U.S. Attorney's Office, and Ronnie Abrams, special counsel for pro bono at Davis Polk & Wardwell. If nominated by the White House and confirmed by the Senate, Ms. Schofield would fill the seat held by Judge Shira Scheindlin, who took senior status last August.
