holding a hand, and chaining a soul
and you learn that love doesn’t mean possession
and company doesn’t mean security.
And you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts
and presents aren’t promises and you begin to accept
your defeats with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of an adult not the grief of a child.
And you learn to build your roads today
because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans
and futures have ways of falling down in mid-flight.
After awhile you learn that even sunshine
burns if you get too much
so you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure
that you really are strong
and you really do have worth
and you learn what it means to unconditionally love another person
because you have first learned what it means to love yourself.
Real, divine love.
In 2009, inspired by Rory Freedman, I started a 30-day exploration of vegetarian eating. One of my favorites on the menu is this chili sin carne (no meat) with mole, a recipe from Vegan with a Vengeance. It’s a rich, decadent chili (you won’t even miss the meat). Takes about 20 minutes to throw together, ready in an hour. 1 large onion, chopped
1 small jalapeno, minced
1 small red bell pepper, chopped
3 cloves garlic, smashed
1 lb. seitan, chopped into 1/4″ cubes
2 Tbsp. chili powder
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cumin
1- 28 oz. can chunky tomatoes in sauce
3 Tbsp. cocoa powder
3 Tbsp. molasses
2-14 oz. cans black beans
2 1/2 c. vegetable broth

Preheat a large pot with a little oil over medium high heat. Add onions and peppers and saute for 2 minutes; then add the garlic and seitan. Cook until onions are soft, then add the chili powder, cinnamon, and cumin, stirring for another minute. Add the tomatoes, cocoa powder and molasses. Then add the beans and vegetable broth. Cover, bringing to a gentle boil, then lower the heat and simmer for about 30 minutes. Allow to sit at least 20 minutes before serving. Better the next day (if you can make it last).

These profound realities haunted me: if all of these statements are true (and they seem true), then I have to forgive myself and him. Otherwise I'd love neither.

Having Max home has been good for my spirits, don't be surprised when you see us running through Hollywood. And my life would be empty without the love of those few old—and many new—friends. While I haven't sung much lately, earlier this year I cut a country track, "Soulmate" as a Valentine's Day gift to a friend. Songs are like relationships: they're never perfect or finished, people come into our lives and invariably, they also leave us. What I know for sure is that I'll never find another soul mate. That space in my heart will always belong to my friend. To quote a popular song, "Yes I will learn to love again, though my heart is breaking I will love again / stronger than before."
I'm proud of how this beautiful recording turned out. You may be reading this right now and already have a soul mate. Or you may have lost yours to death.
HEY SAM, I recently started your Zig Zag meal plan. Can you tell me the names of a few low-carb shakes, powders, or bars you recommend? How do you know if they qualify as “low carb?” Roger, Los Angeles

On the Zig Zag Meal Plan, a food qualifies as “low carb” if a serving contains less than 6 grams of net carbs* per serving. Here are some of my favorite low carb products that you can use as snacks and supplements.

BEST LOW-CARB BARS
Think Thin’s Chocolate Brownie bar “They’re tasty and inexpensive,” says my friend Bronson.
CLIF Builder’s bar (various flavors) $1.49
Power Crunch Bars (various flavors)

BEST LOW-CARB SHAKES (pre-made)
Slim Fast, Low Carb shake (canned) $2.00
Myoplex Lite (any flavor) $2.20
Muscle Milk Light
Pure Protein Shake (pre-canned) $1.49

BEST LOW-CARB PUDDINGS
Instone Protein Pudding (chocolate) $5.99/4 pack. Created by Sylvester Stallone. “It tasted better than I expected it to,” says Bronson.
Muscle Milk Protein Pudding (vanilla) $4.99/4 pack. Features a rich, thick texture.

BEST LOW-CARB PROTEIN POWDER
Isopure Zero Carb Protein powder (chocolate) $42/3lbs

BEST LOW-CARB PROTEIN DRINK ALTERNATIVE
Isopure “Zero Carb” Apple Melon ($3.99 bottle).

BEST TASTING LOW CARB BEERS
Michelob Ultra (2.6 carbs, 95 calories). “I think it comes to mind because it was the best marketed,” says Bronson.
Amstel Light (5 carbs, 95 calories). Not marketed as a low-carb beer, but contains only a couple more grams per bottle.

My friend John saves money buying his supplements online from LuckyVitamin which carries many items at reduced prices. “My first shipment arrived on time,” John says. “The site is legit, products are exactly what they say they are. Go for it!”

*SOME CARBS CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS, while others don’t. Most diets like Atkins and South Beach consider certain carbs (i.e., fiber and sugar alcohol) “non-impact” carbs because the body can’t use them. Calculate net carbs by taking the total carb grams and subtracting the carb grams coming from either sugar alcohol or fiber. The result is the net carb count.

For years I've wanted to own my own gym. Now it seems that the Universe is putting the pieces together, helping this dream to come to fruition. I've identified a location and a great space on Melrose in Hollywood, and I've begun talking with the owner of the space. Here's what I know so far: It's 1,800 square feet, two restrooms, halogen track lighting, polished concrete floors, ceiling fans. So far, seems pretty close to what I would choose. My current locations have been inside the Hollywood Production Centers, in Hollywood and Glendale. These locations have reflected my own personal design, and as I move ahead with a location of my own, no doubt I'm looking for inspiration from other industrial sources on what kind of a space my own gym might turn out to be. I've begun collecting some images of how it might look.
