Understanding Lights….

I’m feeling bad for not being so social for the last 3 months, if not more than that duration. Though my work demanded lot of time. i managed to travel across, but could not spend sometime uploading images online or write a blog post. Having said that, i take this opportunity to kinda update myself with things happened over the quarter Q1 2011.
January 2011: January was hectic… Started the first day of the year with some 700 kms of travel. Some happy reasons to smile and some sad reasons to cry this month.
1st Jan 2011: Somanathapura/ Kanchipuram.
3rd Jan 2011: Navin-Neetha Wedding at the St. Marks Church, Bangalore.
8th Jan 2011: Bombay Circus at the Palace Grounds, Bangalore
14th Jan 2011: Royal Biking home for Pongal via Krishnagiri, Thiruvannamalai.
26th Jan 2011: Kite Festival at the Palace Grounds, Bangalore.
30th Jan 2011: Shreelesh-Deepa Wedding. Chitra Santhe, Kumara Krupa Road, Bangalore.
31st Jan 2011: Cyclist Shoot at Turahalli for TeamShift.

February 2011:
Maharaja Cricket at Thanjavur

5th Feb 2011: Bangalore Fashion Week, Hotel Mathan, Bangalore.
6th Feb 2011: Walking around Leela Palace, with Manjula Sridhar.
9th Feb 2011: Taj Darshan, Visit to Delhi-Agra. Anand’s Wedding.
20th Feb 2011: A quick trip to Tanjore and Thirubhuvanam. Narayanan-Ananthu wedding.

March 2011:
Indian Coffee House Gone…

5th Mar 2011: BWS shoot at the Russel Market. Clicked hardly 4 portraits.
13th Mar 2011: A swift trip to Anekal.. 3 hrs in the village.
16th Mar 2011: Picture Your Passion TVC at the Freedom Park, Bangalore. A mini visit to ICH, MG Road.
18th Mar 2011: Met Sabeer Bhatia. Yay. Proud peevee.
22nd Mar 2011: Fly to Mumbai. Oberai mall at Goregaon was just awesome.
26th Mar 2011: Food Parichay with INTACH in South Bangalore – Thanks to Krupa and Mohan.
27th Mar 2011: A day with Prem Muthu. Interesting. Useful.
So… It was an eventful quarter and looking forward to more better days to come.

When i happened to watch a belly dance performance at Alliance de Francaise couple of years, i didn’t carry my camera to capture the pretty movements of these dancers. But, this time around at the Chowdiah hall, i made sure, i had an entry and a camera permit. Some of the images from the dance show by our own Bangalore based dancers.

Little more about Rags Sharqi:
Belly dance or Bellydance is a Western-coined name for a traditional Middle Eastern dance, especially raqs sharqi. Raqs sharqi (Arabic: رقص شرقي‎; literally “oriental dance”) is the style more familiar to Westerners, performed around the world. It is more commonly performed by female dancers but is also sometimes danced by men. It is a solo improvisational dance, although students often perform choreographed dances in a group.

Experience the energy on the stage, if you get an opportunity.

I got a great opportunity to shoot at the campus of Infosys, Electronic City sometime back. The brief was simple. They were looking for images of their human resource for their internal usage. It was fun shooting with boys and girls inside the low light zones and outside in the lawns. Some of the images from the shoot below. Special thanks to Anita Bora.

The Puttenahalli underpass is being built on J.P. Nagar 15th Cross, which intersects 24th Main and the Ring Road. The Rs. 23-crore project was taken up about three years ago to ease traffic flow from the southern reaches of the city. Work on the project, which was supposed to be completed in February 2009, is going on at a snail’s pace.

After throwing open the overpass on 24th Main, the Minister said that the contractor has not kept his word on completing the project in time. That’s the May 2010 Story. The site is still under construction. Few images of the location.

Built in the year 1927, Russell Market is one of the oldest markets which epitomizes the old charm of our Bengaluru city. Having visited this market many times for shoot, i found this place as a great place to do shoot with a model. Thanks to Neelima. Few images from the shoot here.

Raj Lalwani of Better Photography visited Bangalore on official work and he is kinda heard that Hard Rock Bangalore is the best in the country. Though i visited The HardRock couple of times in the past, this is the first time, we dropped in to Hard Rock on a crowded Saturday Evening.

The ambiance was great and music was rocking, as the name suggests. Guys and Girls of all ages, shapes and sizes were drinking alcohol. I guess, Akash and I were the only two odd men out drinking non-alcoholic drink. Some of the images from the walkin. 28th August 2010. Thanks to Akash, Raj Lalwani and Devkishor for their company.

Oops. I’m not able to believe myself, that I randomly got up an hour ago (2.30am) to know Shiv is no more. It was a sad demise of this sopper cool photojournalist who worked on a spectrum of stories including the ones on forest brigand Veerapan and one eyed sivarasan.

When DNA launched their Bangalore edition, Shiv was responsible as a photo editor to bring in five-days-a-week picture page under PicUp section. It was great meeting Shiv through Selvaprakash, his colleague at DNA earlier in 2009. And lucky me, I happened to have lot of mini conversations on photography with him, when he wanted to bring in a section under iPic, where citizen photographers can share their views through images.

I believe his weekly columns on photojournalism on DNA were priceless and i still keep a copy of one of his focal point writeups on “Citizen journalism way ahead for Media” where he started of with “Chatting with Perumal Venkatesan, fondly known as Pee-Vee”, which was published in Feb 2010. I was quipping something and all on the current trends, cloud computing, citizen contributions etc, and it was really a long chat, went on for at least 12 minutes on the topic for DNA. The last conversation i had with him was in May 2010, that’s after his move to Bangalore Mirror and now he permanently moved away from all of us.

One of his images, taken in January 2004 entitled, Before Bhopal, won 10th prize in the colour section of the WHO photo contest, “Images of Disability 2005″.

Let his soul Rest In Peace. I must say, we lost a real cool photojournalist. WE MISS YOU SHIV.

In spite of all my dislikes for Indian Independence Day, I enjoyed and celebrated this year in a small village in Tamil Nadu with some primary school kids. Shooting these children with 3 great qualities (Innocent, Ignorant and Independent) that are very specific to the remote villages had been a great experience. Kids are so energetic and interested to celebrate the day with my camera.

One fine day, when i was crossing Anil Kumble circle, i was surprised to see 100s of men and women on the road side looking at a new metro bogie, which was showcased on the MG Roadd. There were a lot of cars and bikes park under the newly constructed metro flyover, as if it was a designated parking lot. Infact it is a parking lot for this newly developed Tourist Spot. The scene was great with kids, young men and women with their elders checking the new metro bogie with a smile and lot of expectation. Some of the frames from the shoot here.

M. G. Road is one of the busiest roads in the Bangalore city and is lined on one side with retail stores, food outlets and restaurants. It runs from Trinity Circle at one end to Anil Kumble Circle at the other. It used to house a lot of Heritage buildings and started loosing one after other in the recent past.Presently it is being improved and prepared for the long-awaited Metro Rail line that connects the eastern part of Bangalore with the west. The beautiful Boulevard of MG Road was lost by Bangaloreans for this metro development 2 years back.
