Fundraising Increases 68%
Three-Year Total Exceeds $25 million

Columbus, Ohio: Pelotonia today announces record fundraising of $13,108,639 for its 2011 ride. This year’s total reflects a 68% fundraising increase over the 2010 amount of $7,846,705.

From August 19-21, 2011, 4,986 riders from 38 states and four countries rode up to 180 miles on one of four routes. With support of family, friends, neighbors, and associates, riders made it possible for Pelotonia to make an extraordinary contribution to The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). Funds raised by the grass roots bicycle tour now total $25,467,212 for its first three years of operation.

“Our community has stepped up beyond even the most optimistic expectations. From riders and funding partners to volunteers, each is doing their part to end cancer,” said Tom Lennox, Founder and Executive Director of Pelotonia. “The passion of this group will not be denied. A cure will be found sooner because of their commitment.“

A differentiating characteristic of Pelotonia is that 100% of every dollar raised by riders, virtual riders and volunteers is invested in research initiatives conducted by the OSUCCC – James. Pelotonia and its supporters are proud of this distinction, which is made possible by Pelotonia’s generous funding partners, Limited Brands Foundation, Huntington Bank, Richard and Peggy Santulli, American Electric Power Foundation, Nationwide Insurance and Cardinal Health Foundation. Pelotonia and its riders also benefit greatly from in-kind donations made by numerous locally and nationally based companies.

Pelotonia staff presented Pelotonia’s 2011 contribution to The Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee and Director of the Ohio State Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute Dr. Michael Caligiuri at LC Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio. Over 1,000 supporters attended this year’s check presentation. Approximately 1,700 volunteers worked throughout the year on behalf of Pelotonia.

“I am deeply grateful to all of those who were part of Pelotonia’s remarkable success,” said Gee. “Few forces are mightier than when people come together in good will to fight a common cause. And I can think of no nobler cause than curing cancer through funds raised in Pelotonia.”

“Thanks to the tireless efforts of Pelotonia riders, donors, sponsors and volunteers, all of the money raised by Pelotonia will help fund ‘high-risk, high-reward’ innovative cancer research at The Ohio State University,” said Dr. Caligiuri. “Some of our most recently funded research projects include team science awards with experts from disciplines across the university working together to generate new discoveries and exploring novel therapies for treating blood, breast, liver, prostate and skin cancers.”

The resources raised by Pelotonia support a variety of research projects addressing all aspects of cancer including diagnosis, treatment, psychosocial issues and prevention. The Pelotonia Fellowship Committee awards fellowships to distinguished student scientists in the undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral and medical school programs. Pelotonia Idea Grants allow promising and creative investigators to engage in a variety of “high-risk, high-reward” cancer research projects. Projects currently funded by Pelotonia Idea Grants include the early detection and prevention of pancreatic cancer; tests to determine the most effective therapies for triple-negative breast cancer; influences of heredity in cancer development and possible new prevention and treatment strategies; and the development of a new drug to fight breast cancer and leukemia. For additional detail, please visit: http://tiny.cc/xfeqp.

Pelotonia 2012 is scheduled for August 10-12. Rider registration will open on January 10, 2012 at www.pelotonia.org.

Pelotonia expecting over 5,000 Riders

Pelotonia today announced Nancy Snyderman, MD, NBC Chief Medical Editor will serve as keynote speaker during Pelotonia opening ceremony on August 19, 2011. Pelotonia 11 registrations are closing in on 5,000 riders resulting in another year of strong growth for the organization. Based on exceptional rider participation, Pelotonia is expecting to exceed $10 million in funds raised for cancer research this year.

Dr. Snyderman graduated from Indiana University with a BA in microbiology. Snyderman attended medical school at the University of Nebraska and continued with residencies in Pediatrics and Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to joining NBC News, Snyderman served as Vice President, Consumer Education for the health care corporation, Johnson & Johnson. Snyderman’s reports appear on Today, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, Dateline NBC, MSNBC and MSNBC.com. Snyderman’s medical work has been widely published in peer review journals and she is the recipient of numerous research grants from the American Cancer Society, the Kellogg Foundation, and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

“Dr. Snyderman has dedicated her career to helping patients with cancer and we are fortunate to have her as our keynote speaker this year,” said Tom Lennox, Executive Director of Pelotonia. “I’m confident Dr. Snyderman will be impressed with the similar commitment our riders have made to end cancer.”

Pelotonia weekend kicks off at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 19, 2011, on the campus of Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), 2540 Olentangy River Road, with rider check-in, live entertainment and dinner. The opening ceremony begins at 7:15 p.m. including remarks from Keynote Speaker Nancy Snyderman M.D.

Due to the strong financial support of Pelotonia’s funding partners, 100 percent of every dollar raised goes directly to cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. Partners taking a leadership role in Pelotonia 11 include Huntington Bank, Limited Brands, Richard and Peggy Santulli, American Electric Power Foundation, Nationwide Insurance, Cardinal Health and Chemical Abstracts Service.

Pelotonia’s riders will cover as many as 180-miles between Columbus and Athens. Pelotonia offers four distinct ride experiences appealing to a wide range of riding abilities. Riders choose between a one-day 23-mile ride, 43-mile ride, 102-mile ride, or a two-day 180-mile ride. Each rider makes a personal financial commitment to raise a minimum of $1,200 to $2,200 for cancer research. Over the past two years, riders on average have exceeded fundraising minimums by a significant amount.

Following breakfast on Saturday, August 20, Pelotonia’s riders will start their tour from CAS at 7:00 a.m. and travel south along Olentangy River Road past the Jerome Schottenstein Center, through campus and down Neil Avenue.

Turning left at Nationwide Boulevard, Pelotonia riders, led by police escorts, will turn right on High Street, riding past the Ohio Statehouse before heading southeast past Groveport toward Canal Winchester, Amanda, Lancaster, Logan and Nelsonville before stopping in Athens, Ohio.

The CAS campus will only be open to Pelotonia riders and staff on Saturday morning, and spectators are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to view the action from one of two locations: either the Jerome Schottenstein Center or the Ohio Statehouse lawn.

More than 1,600 volunteers will support riders by providing snacks, beverages, first aid assistance and bike maintenance services.

Between 7:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Saturday, 23-mile riders will arrive in Canal Winchester while 43-mile riders will arrive in Amanda, Ohio. All other riders will continue on the route, with most arriving in Athens by mid-afternoon.

Saturday night, over 2,000 riders will enjoy dinner and entertainment. Nearly 600 riders will stay overnight in the dorms at Ohio University before riding back to Slate Run Metro Park Sunday morning, completing the 180-mile tour.

Two-year total surpasses $12.3 million

Columbus, Ohio – On August 21 and 22, 4,047 riders rode over 328,000 miles to raise money for cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. Today during the first quarter break of the Ohio State vs. Michigan game, Pelotonia will present a check for $7,846,705. The funds raised by the Riders in 2010 bring Pelotonia’s two-year total to over $12.3 million.

“We are thrilled with the fundraising results of our second ride,” said Tom Lennox, Pelotonia executive director. “The success of this annual experience is driven by our Riders, Volunteers and their supporters who understand the importance of funding innovative cancer research. Our community has the passion and willpower to cure cancer and there are no better researchers to fund than those at The Ohio State Comprehensive Cancer Center. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2011 to continue that fight.”

Thanks to Pelotonia’s funding partners, including Huntington Bank, Limited Brands Foundation, Richard and Peggy Santulli, American Electric Power Foundation, Nationwide Insurance and Chemical Abstracts Service, 100% of the $7.8 million will go directly to cancer research.

“The success over the last two years has been inspiring not only to me but to the entire community,” said Dr. Michael Caligiuri, director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. “Funds raised by Pelotonia Riders help Ohio State researchers – some of the world’s brightest minds in cancer – understand, prevent and cure cancer right here in central Ohio. We are making real progress on the frontiers of discovery, and together, we will realize our shared vision for a cancer-free world. On behalf of the thousands of Ohio State researchers, oncologists, faculty and staff who work every day to bring us closer to a world without cancer, thank you for riding, for volunteering and for donating to Pelotonia.”

Pelotonia is supported by 1,600 Volunteers who dedicate their weekend to ensuring an enjoyable and rewarding weekend for the Riders. This year’s 4,047 Riders were supported by over 63,000 donors from around the world.

“Pelotonia’s remarkable and growing success is a testament to the power of collaboration and our common determination to discover a cure for cancer,” said E. Gordon Gee, president of The Ohio State University. “The event has quickly become a celebration of courage and tenacity that extends well beyond the University, the community and the state. To my mind, Pelotonia is nothing less than a public confirmation of the human spirit. I am enormously grateful for the good work and tangible progress it makes possible.”

Partners Ensure 100% of All Rider Raised Donations Continue to Go Towards Cancer Research

Columbus, Ohio, April 6, 2010 – Pelotonia announces its new funding partners that will ensure 100% of all proceeds will continue to go directly to life-saving cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James). Three Major Funding Partners, Huntington Bank, Limited Brands Foundation and Richard and Peggy Santulli, have agreed to make gifts totaling $2.5 million each over a five-year period.

Supporting Funding Partners American Electric Power Foundation and Nationwide Insurance Foundation have agreed to make one-year gifts of $250,000 each.

Additionally, Chemical Abstracts Service has once again offered its campus as the launch site, as well as substantial in-kind support. Cardinal Health has made a $100,000 cash donation to Pelotonia 10 and will make an additional in-kind donation of medical supplies to stock first aid stations along the route. Pelotonia’s mission has a positive impact on the entire community, which makes this partnership more than a financial donation," said Abigail Wexner, Chair of Limited Brands Foundation.

Columbus, Ohio – The inaugural Pelotonia tour was a total success. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.

With participants from 31 states and Canada, including Lance Armstrong, Pelotonia’s riders were welcomed by cheers, handmade signs and an out pouring of support along the route and throughout the entire weekend. Based on the success of the inaugural tour many riders have said they will ride again and bring friends and family to join them.

"The feeling of achievement is incredibly addictive," said Tom Lennox, executive director of Pelotonia. "This was our first Pelotonia, and although we were optimistic about the success of the event we are even more pleased with the outcome. We are looking forward to making Pelotonia 10 and even bigger success."

"Each and every one of us has been affected by cancer in some way, and we all want to take the battle into our own hands," said E. Gordon Gee, president of The Ohio State University. "Pelotonia gives us that chance. The inaugural ride’s remarkable success testifies to the tremendous partnership among individuals, communities, corporations, and the University. I am grateful for Tom Lennox’s energetic leadership, for NetJets’ support, and for the very real ways in which the funds raised enable our physicians and researchers to improve the lives of patients and their families."

Fundraising for the 2009 tour closed October 31, 2009. Rider and peloton profiles, all available to view online, demonstrate a community united against cancer.

"We need a world that’s cancer-free," said Dr. Michael Caligiuri, director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of the James Cancer Hospital and

Solove Research Institute. "And because of Pelotonia, we have additional, much-needed funding resources for discoveries that will help prevent, detect, diagnose and treat cancers."

From the first rider to achieve her fundraising goal, Lisa Metzler (on Feb. 23rd), to the individual rider who raised the most, John Sokol (at $29,883), Pelotonia was a team effort.

The youngest rider, age 11 and the oldest, age 77, joined the largest peloton, the Cardinal Health Cyclotrons (70 members) and the highest fundraising peloton, Limitless ($106,545).
