1. Be very good at your job

A prerequisite to almost anything related to your career and not only in headhunting business. Your pay and promotion will largely depend on how well you can perform in your job. Continuously deliver best-in-class performance that will build up your reputation.

Build a round which is rounder than a round. Teach a parrot to speak Chinese. Make Jack Sparrow an ally to Davy Jones. Mesmerize your boss, your management and your competitors with your breakthrough achievements.

2. Back your claim with facts and figures

Will you be able to back your reputation with credible facts, figures and evidence? Can you prove that a certain significant result achieved by the company for the past 3 months is spearheaded by you and not by some Tom, Dick and Harry?

Perhaps without realizing it, someone has been stealing the figures and claim them as their own. Maybe, it’s your old good buddy Kumar. It can be even your boss Ming Cheng who wants to take credit for your hard work and effort. Don’t let your hard work be undone.

3. Play only for the champions, and in the champions league

The world’s best soccer players play in the English Premier League or Spanish La Liga rather than the Scottish or Italy’s second division. They also play in the Champions League. Similarly, the industry’s cream of the crop will either play for the market leader. And so must you. Choose a company sitting on top of the industry’s ladder. If you see the company is falling off the rung steeply, you know what to do.

4. People must know you are good and knowledgeable

Accept invitation to be a keynote speaker for events. Speak on behalf of your company. Present your research findings on conferences or speaking circuits. Be in the judging panel for college competitions, or even reality shows. Contribute articles to the local magazines, newspapers or internet publication. Blog. Back your knowledge with facts, figures and evidence. Leave traceable marks that will lead influential people to you.

5. Network, network, network

Make your face familiar with the networking events, especially those related to your industry and specialization. Exchange business cards, trade ideas and share your point of views on the industry’s future direction. Play football friendly matches with your vendors, clients or even competitors. Join their weekly bowling challenge. At the same time, stay as a ‘passive’ job seeker. Let people know what you are doing, without telling directly you’re actively seeking for a job. Headhunters loves this type of people, who are good in their job but do not seem desperate enough to leave.

5. Be a "performer"

But all the hardwork and smartwork that you have done may not be complete without this last method. OR this method also proven if all the hardwork and smartwork you have done does not return as your expectation, then try this last method.

It requires you to be an entertainer, presenter and of course YES MAN attitude. You will see this kind of people anywhere in the working industry, you hate them a lot. They dont know shit about his/her duties BUT he/she goes up easily and well liked among among all. Here's how:
- when your boss tell LAME jokes, please laugh eventhough its not funny.
- always take credit from other people work.
- smile in front of your friend but stab them hard behind you, tell bad stories about him/her infront your superior or your colleagues.
- always pour negative aura to your colleagues, demotivate them so when they resign you have better chance to move up without any toough competition.
- always highlight small chunk of task to your superior, ask question that you already know the answer, get notice!

That's not it, there are lot more. Like it or not this way is proven method, eventhough it is not honest and no credibility but who cares at the end of the day, as long as the goal achieved.

Apache - SLES 10

In this Session I will explain how to setup and configure the Apache Web server in SLES 10. I will also explain what virtual hosts are and how you can create them in Apache.

So, first let's see how to enable Apache in SLES 10.1.

1. After you have a default installation of SLES the Apache web server is installed on your server, but it is not enabled by default. To enable the Apache web server, open YaST and go to Network Services. In the left panel you see "HTTP Server", click it to open the configuration screen.

A screen comes up to tell you there are some packages that need to be installed, click continue and the packages will be installed. When asked, insert the right installation Disks.. After these packages are installed, the HTTP Server Configuration screen comes up

2. In the Configuration screen you can configure the most important settings.

First of all, make sure to Enable the HTTP Services, don't forget it or your server will not work at all.

The second thing to configure is the ip address and the port number the HTTP Server will listen on. You can choose to select All Addresses but this is not very safe. Typically you should use a separate ip address for your web server. You can also choose the port number the server should listen on, the default port is 80.

If you have a private web server, you can choose a different port here. Tell only the people that use the server what the port is so you have a little security.

The second TAB contains all the modules installed that Apache can use.

For now, leave this as default and click the Default Host TAB.

In this TAB we have a lot of important setting we can do.

Lets start with the Document Root.

This is the directory where you put all of the web server files. Normally, this directory contains the index file for your website.

Then there is the Include path.

This is the path where the primary apache configuration file (/etc/appache2/httpd.conf) can call other configuration files from. So if you have other configuration files that also need to be loaded from within the httpd.conf file, you should place them in this directory.

Server Resolution.

For myself, I think this is a very cool option that Apache has. It listens to the IP Address you connect to and then knows what web site it should present to you.

This can be used when you would like to have more then one website reside on the same web server. Normally this can't be done or you should do something with the port numbers of these sites.

Now you can tell the Apache that you will host two websites on the server, and that you will connect to them with a separate IP Address.

Website One:

It has the ip address 10.10.10.1. The document root is /srv/www/htdocs/site1.

Website Two:

It has the ip address 10.10.10.2. The document root is /srv/www/htdocs/site2.

When you enter 10.10.10.1 in a browser it will show you website one, and when you enter 10.10.10.2 it will show you website two.

The last TAB will show you the Hosts or website that reside on the web server.

You can run more than one website on one web server. This is called Virtual Hosting. If you would like to host another site on the server, this is the place to configure it. I will come back to explain this option later.

Click Finish and the settings will be saved.

3. Now you have configured the basic settings for your http server. You will need to check if the services are running. To do this, open a terminal window and enter: rchttpd status

In my case you see the apache2 server is running.

The final thing to do is create an index file in the document root directory.

Create a new file called index.html in the /srv/www/htdocs/ directory. Open the file with vi and enter some text in it, save and close the file.

Now you are almost there, you only have to set the rights to the /srv/www/ directory so that other users may read the files.

4. To set the appropriate file rights open a terminal window.

Change the Directory to /srv and enter: chmod -R 755 www

The -R option will set the 755 rights to all the files and directories under the www directory.

Now it's time to test and see if the Web server is working.

5. Open a web browser and enter the ip address you configured.

Notice that the text you entered in the index file is displayed.

6. Now we will make a second web site to run on the same web server. This is called a virtual host.

In YaST open the HTTP Server configuration screen.

To create a second website on this server click the TAB Hosts.

The host in the list is the website we just created.

Before we click the ADD button to create a second host on this web server we first add a secondary ip address to the servers NIC.

Open YaST, Network Devices and click Network Card

Click Next

Click Edit to add a secondary ip-address to the Network card.

When you click Edit, the screen shown below comes up.

In here, click the Advance button and from the drop down button select Additional Address.

In the next screen click Add

In this window you can enter the secondary ip address for you network card. Click OK, OK and Next Next to save the settings.

Now go back to the HTTP Server Configuration screen in YaST. In the first TAB Make sure that the Listen IP is set to All Addresses

Now go to the Host TAB. Click Add.

Enter the Host name of the Virtual Web server. I entered: sles2

Give the Document root for the web server. In my case: /srv/www/htdocs/sles2/. In here I have created an index.html filee and entered the text: Dave Simons SLES2 in it.

Also enter an email address for the web server.

Enter the secondary ip address you created earlier (192.168.1.11) and select the last radio button.

Click Next, and in the following window click OK to save you settings.

Now you see that you have 2 Hosts.

Click Finish to save the settings.

Now its time to test your virtual host.

Open a web browser and enter the URL: HTTP:\\192.168.1.10.

This is the default web site that's created during the installation of the HTTP Server.

To test the virtual host we just created, we have to enter the secondary ip-address 192.168.1.11 in the URL of your web browser.

Now you see a different web site, this is the text I entered in the index.html file of the virtual host we created. The index.html file in residing in /srv/www/htdocs/sles2/

In my test lab I used ip addresses to test connectivity to the web server. You can also create a dns record to use you dns names in the browser.

In the above examples I created 2 web sites. One was the Default and the second was the virtual website. I created them with YaST.

There is also the option to configure your apache 2 server from the configuration files.

The most important is /etc/apache2/httpd.conf.

In this file there are a lot of includes, this means that it reads other configuration files.

One of the include statements is the Virtual host statement: Include /etc/apache2/vhosts.d/*.conf

It reads all the conf files in the Include /etc/apache2/vhosts.d/ directory. If you look in this directory you also see a file "YaST2_vhosts.conf". This is the file that contains the virtual hosts we created in YaST.

There is also a file called /etc/srv/www/htdocs/listen.conf.

In this file you can configure on what port the web server is listening for requests. As you all will know the default web server port is 80. Sometimes it can be very useful to choose a different port for your web site. Lets assume you have a site that's more private the a default web site. You can choose to change the port to a different value so it's harder to find for the basic users.

Finally, you can see if the web server is running and you can reload the web server.

To check if the server is running, open a terminal window as the user root and enter: rcapache2 status.

In the above screen you see the server is running.

To restart the apache web server you have 2 main commands: "rcapache2 restart" and "rcapache reload".

The first one will stop apache and restart it, no matter how many clients are using the web server.

The preferred way to restart the web server in a production environment is to use the second command. So if you have to reload the web server because you have done some changes in the configuration use "rcapache2 reload" This will not disconnect the uses that are currently connected.

You can see the difference in the terminal windows. The restart command will also restart the child processes of Apache.

So, I hope that this Session has given you some more detail in how you can configure and install Apache as a web server in SLES. Its really a great web server to use.

PHP 5 and MySQL

This guide is intended for beginners who wanted to install PHP 5 and MySQL Community version 5 and make it work with Apache 2.2 . Installation will be done locally, so that you can test web application such as Wordpress before going live. This is quite a long guide so prepare yourselves for a ride!

Prerequisites : You had already installed Apache 2.2 locally on Windows. If not, please read my previous Apache 2 installation guide and come back later to continue with this post.

Install PHP 5 on Windows

1- Download the latest Windows PHP Binaries (MSI file) from this page. I choose the eZNetworking mirror because it is the closest one to Malaysia. Choose a mirror that is nearer to your country for a faster file download. The latest PHP version that I downloaded is 5.2.4. Save the file to your Desktop.

2- Right click on the file and click “Install“.

3- Click “Next ” once the Welcome page is displayed.

4- Select “I accept the license agreement” and click “Next “.

5- Change your PHP installation path OR just accept the default path - C:\Program Files\PHP\ and click “Next “.

6- On the Web Server Setup screen, select the Apache 2.2.x Module and click “Next “.

7-On the Apache Configuration Directory screen, browse for the Apache configuration directory (conf) OR just enter C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\conf\ and click “Next ” to proceed with the installation.

8- For now, accept the default selection and click “Next”.

9-Click “Install ” to install PHP 5 on Windows.

10- Click “Finish ” once completed. PHP 5 is successfully installed.

11- Start your Apache 2.2 server using the “Monitor Apache Servers” console (Start -> Apache HTTP Servers 2.2.4 -> Monitor Apache Servers ). You can see that PHP was successfully installed by checking the Apache status at the bottom of the console.

Test your PHP 5 Installation

1- Open up your Windows Notepad. Type in “” inside the file. Save this file as “info.php” inside your Apache root directory, C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs .

2- Open up your web browser. In the address bar, type in your web server domain name plus info.php as the file name. Example: http://www.syahid.com/info.php . You should get a PHP configuration page just like the one below.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed and test PHP 5 on Windows!

Tell Apache 2.2.x to Support PHP Index File

What happens if you change your index.html (default web server homepage) to index.php and try to access your homepage? Apache will not recognize it and you won’t see anything displayed on the page. To make sure Apache recognizes index.php as a default homepage too, follow the instructions below.

1- Rename your index.html to index1.html and info.php to index.php (for testing purposes only!).

2- Edit your Apache configuration file, C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\conf\httpd.conf by opening it with Windows Notepad.

3- Find a line that starts with “DirectoryIndex index.html…“. Add index.php at the end of the line . Save the file and restart your Apache Server from the “Monitor Apache Servers” console.

4- Load your Internet browser again. Type in your web server address e.g http://www.syahid.com. You should get a page similar to the info.php page above. Index.php now is recognized as a default Apache homepage, just like your normal index.html page.

Install MySQL 5.0 Community Edition on Windows

1- Download MySQL 5.0 Community Edition to your Desktop from here. If you want to download from a different mirror, click here. Make sure you always download the “Complete package “. Current version during this post was written is 5.0.45.

2- Unzip mysql-5.0.45-win32.zip (the downloaded mysql file) to get Setup.exe. Double click Setup.exe to start installing MySQL. Click “Next ” when you are prompted as below.

3- Select “Typical” for Setup Type and click “Next ” again.

4- Click “Install ” to proceed with the installation process.

5- The setup activity will show you some advertisement. Read it if you wish and click “Next “.

6- Tick “Configure the MySQL Server now” and click “Next ” two times.

7- Click “Standard Configuration” to ease installation process and click “Next ” again.

8- Tick “Install As Windows Service” to make MySQL auto-startup with Windows and “Include Bin Directory in Windows PATH ” to make MySQL system files automatically available for other application.

9- Tick “Modify Security Settings” and enter a root (Administrator) password to secure your MySQL installation. Don’t skip this step! Click “Next ” again.

10- Click “Execute” to start the MySQL Configuration process. Once finished, click “Finish ” to end configuration.

11- Make sure MySQL runs automatically after installation. You can check the status from Administrative Tools Services snap in (Start -> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Services ), also available via Control Panel.

12- (OPTIONAL) Open your DOS command prompt (Run -> cud). Type in “net stat -na“. Check out ports opened by MySQL (3306) and Apache (80) . That means the services are up and running.

13- (OPTIONAL) Run some of MySQL commands to further ensure that the installation is a success. Check out and follow the commands as pictured below. User account is root and password depends on what you have entered previously during your MySQL configuration.

14- IMPORTANT: Reboot your machine! This is to ensure all MySQL system files are rss-read by Windows as environment variables.

Configure PHP 5 to Work with MySQL with MySQL PHP Extension

Previously, we have installed PHP with minimal modules / extension. To add MySQL support to PHP, you need to change your PHP installation - by adding the MySQL extension on top of your PHP installation. Please make sure that your original PHP 5 MSI installer still remains at its original place .

1- Open the Add / Remove Programs console via Windows Control Panel. Find the PHP 5.x.x entry and click “Change “.

2- Click “Next ” once you are prompted the Welcome page.

3- Click the “Change ” button to proceed.

4- Select Apache 2.2.x as shown in the picture below. Click “Next ” once again.

5- Select your Apache configuration directory (conf) - the directory where your httpd.conf resides. Click “Next ” once done.

6- On the “Choose items to install” screen, click on the plus (+) icon next to Extensions to expand the list.

7- Select on the “X” next to “MySQL” and select “Entire feature will be installed on local hard drive”. Click “Next” again.

8- Click the “Change” button to save all the PHP configuration changes.

9- Finally, restart your Apache 2.2 web server! You can check out that the MySQL extension support for PHP was successfully installed by checking out the info.php / index.php page that was created before.

Congratulations! Give yourself a pat on the back to finally manage it here. Now you can run almost many web applications that depends on Apache 2.2, PHP 5 with MySQL 5 database support. If any of those app complain about any missing extensions, remember that you can always reconfigure PHP by following the steps above.

Whew! This is quite a long guide but I really hope that someone out there will benefit from it!

Now, I can see that I smoke less. I will only smoke in workplace and during drinking session. At home or other place, I rarely smoke, I can count it to Zero.

I did not plan to reduce my smoking habit, but it reduce automatically. Maybe due to age factore, the older we get, the wiser we are if not handsome. Okay, good for me then.

With recession looming, companies in the UK are closing down their business fast and laying off people, giving rise to increase in unemployment to a new alarming rate.

The economic downturn has gone from bad to worse, and with the trend, it is likely that the job loss in UK could hit a million when Christmas comes in December.

The unemployment rate has been the sharpest increase since the last 16 years. Similarly, the number of people applying for the unemployment benefit has risen by 32,500, a number only matched by the bad recession in 1992.

In August, the number of job loss recorded a 6-digit figure of 110,000, the first time such digit was achieved. The August loss, combined with the previous losses, make up a staggering total of 900,000 job redundancies overall. And as the economy continues to plunge downwards, it will only be a matter of time the magic figure of one million is hit.

Workers in banking, manufacturing and services sectors are the worst affected.

On the other hand, while companies are still hiring, it is moving at a snail’s pace and the number of job vacancies made available has gone down significantly by some 15%. It is clear that at the moment, companies are reluctant to hire more staff, and even if they do, they’ve been very selective in getting only the right candidates for the job.

Lehman Brother's EMP

When told that their company has gone under, Lehman Brothers’ employees in the UK packed their stuff and went home, seemingly resigned to the fate that they won’t see their September salary.

That means many of them would not enough money to cover their range of usual expenses including mortgage, hire purchase, rent, food and groceries, and other expenses.

However, all is not lost after the company’s administrator, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) which took over the management promised the 4,000 odd workers will be duly paid their salary. The employees have also been asked to come back to office and complete the month.

The only slight hiccup is that instead of getting the salary payment on the usual third week cycle (around 20th of the month), the workers will get their earning a little bit late, but effort is being made to ensure the staff are paid before the 30th September. No decision has been made on bonus, but from the look of things, bonus give outs are unlikely occasion.

When PwC first stepped into the office, the audit firm was unable to find enough cash, and was seemingly short of $75 million required to settle the September wages. It sparked panic until the winding down of several key positions started to generate some cash flow.

AIG Rescued

For now, more than 110,000 employees of AIG (American International Group) worldwide can breath a sigh of relief, after the US government moved to bail the company out and prevent it to collapse.

The private financial firm was on the brink of a financial disaster and seemed destined for the same fate as Lehman Brothers, which went bankrupt this week, until the last minute intervention by the Federal Reserve.

Ironically, Lehman Brothers went to Fed for assistance but was refused help.

AIG’s main financial problems lie in its insurance of mortgage-backed securities, and risky debts. In the rescue packaged agreed, the Federal Reserve would be injecting $85 billion of fund in return of majority shareholdership with 79.9% stake in AIG. The Fed will now have power to restructure the management team, and is expected to remove some of the senior managers.

The bulk of AIG employees are stationed in their main regional offices, including in New York as their global headquarter, London, Paris and Hong Kong. The company provides a broad range of financial services ranging from property, auto protection, life insurance, casualty, annuity, IT services and investment.

In 2008, Forbes named AIG as the 13th largest company in America, and 35th largest in the world with $110 billion revenues.

Workplace - Surviving Tips

Now, it is no secret. Work is hard. Surviving in a workplace is hard. Gone are the days where people stay loyal to one company their entire life. My mother worked 1 job for 30 years before she retired. Growing up, I was amazed with that fact and I told myself when I got my first job, I would stay for 30 years. As of now…my current job is my 4th.

Working in human resources, I have seen people come and go. I have conducted many exit interviews…trying to figure out the how to stop people from leaving their job especially those whom are unhappy with their work. I wish I could find a solution that will help them as well as myself.

After 7 years of observing people and myself, in my personal opinion there are 3 factors that can really help you to stay longer in a company and create job satisfaction for your career longevity.

1. Your Boss

When I am asked, what is the most important thing for me in a workplace, my answer is simple - ‘my relationship with my boss’. This can make or break your career. Your boss determines your career path, your promotion, your increment, your visibility and your development. Always maintain a good relationship with your boss. It is your duty to make your boss look good. Always make your boss your #1 priority at work. Most importantly, always make sure you communicate well and openly with your boss about your work and be willing to take feedback.

2. People at Workplace

I used to go to work thinking it would be great if I can make friends. It does not work for me and I think it probably does not work for many people. There are some many personalities at work and workplace politics are so complicated.

If you become emotionally involved with the people around you, it distracts you, it frustrates you when you don’t get what you think you should get from your ‘friend’, you feel obligated, you want obligation etc. See people with a professional eye not with an emotional eye.

Socializing is the last thing you should be worried about instead talk about work. Make sure, you create an impression that your #1 thought is work and nothing else. Now, this might sound anti-social but it is not, the more you are less emotionally involved with people around you, the less chance for you to be frustrated by people. Take note : I said emotionally involved …not totally don’t get involved with people…you can be friendly and nice (you should) in a professional perspective. You’ll be a lot happier.

3. Work

You really need to watch this. It can bring you wonders or it can totally destroy your career. This is what you are paid to do. This is your value to your company, your boss and to your colleagues. ALWAYS, be on top of your work. It is ok, if you have to slug it out for while, but make sure you are always in control of your work. Always plan your work on time and always produce the best quality of work in the shortest time possible. When you take charge of your workload, you will feel less pressured and a lot more excited to take up other challenges. You will send a positive message to your boss and you will earn the respect of the people around.

These 3 factors link up with each other to make your work life more happier, fruitful and longer.

• Eat at planned times. Waiting until you're famished can prompt unhealthy options to satisfy cravings. Scheduling lunch is especially important when your day is hectic.
• Instead of buying chocolate or chips, bring snacks such as fruit and cheese.
• A proper work-home balance will reduce stress, a trigger for weight gain.
• During breaks, take a walk. Even a 15-minute walk can help your fitness - and clear your head.

I hope this will work well with me, my new job function requires me to work more than 10 hours a day sometimes. (8.30 am to 10 pm)

• Be prepared to pay extra for software. Even the basic Microsoft Office is absent from many packages.

• Due to their rough life, laptops are more prone to failure, making it vital to back up data: a second, external hard drive makes this easier.

• Buy a decent and hardy laptop bag to protect your computer, like nowwadays people prefer to have backpack style instead of old lame style of laptop bag.

Selamat Gawai Dayak to all my readers

Gawai Dayak, which falls on the 1st of June every year, is a day for all Dayak races in Sarawak to celebrate the end of the harvest season. It is a tradition whereby Dayaks will go back to their own village or “kampung” and celebrate Gawai Day together with their families. The way they celebrated Gawai Day is similar to the way the Sabahan etnics celebrate their own harvest festival: have a big feast at night which will last till the next morning.

Every Gawai celebration won’t gonna be perfect without a traditional alcoholic drink called Tuak. Tuak is made of rice that were soaked inside a pale of water together with some herbs to produce alcohol. The soaked rice will then be kept for at least 6 months before the celebration comes. Some may even preserved the Tuak for years since the theory stated that the longer the Tuak being preserved, the nicer it is.

It is important to know .. that we only have ONE mind. Our one mind has two very different functions.

The first function is of the conscious mind .. its job is to direct us .. the thinking part that helps us to go about our daily business and enables us to learn new things.

The second function is of the subconscious mind .... this is the part of the mind that absorbs all the things we learn and experience. It is like our own personal library storing all the information that we've put into it .. It also becomes our blueprint .. the place that we operate from automatically.. so it would be correct to say that our subconscious is programmed by our conscious ... Yes ?

The other thing to know about the subconscious is that it is the part of our being that is filled with unlimited power .. it is through this that we connect with our... Super conscious .... God .. Universal power .. or whatever you want to call it .. Through this power we create our external existence our health and joy ..OR ... our misery pain and suffering..

There is a storehouse within you from which you can extract everything you need to live a glorious, healthy, abundant life ..

Many people are closed off to their own potential because they do not know about this storehouse of infinite intelligence.

Some people do believe in this power but don't know how to connect to it.. I am still trying here !

Your subconscious mind is always working, day and night and you are always using it .. Its job is not to quality control what you are putting into it .. it will always just accept what you programme it with and then produce the result in your reality .. so if you constantly think , I don't feel well .. I don't feel well .. then that's exactly what you will manifest in your life ..

I have one colleague that always thinking like this all the time, too bad for him …..

A lovely analogy of the subconscious mind is to liken it to a garden ..

You cant plant Thorn bushes and Weeds in your garden and expect Roses and Daisies to grow .. !!!

What seeds do you plant in your garden? seeds of .. despair , ill health , lack, confusion , intolerance, victimisation.

These types of seeds are not going to grow into a beautiful garden, where one would want to live {or even come and visit }. Now I feel regreted for buying this phone, should have waited for IPAQ 612, Hewlett-Packard launch HP iPAQ 512 Voice Messenger (RM 899 , that was on July, 2007). “Voice Messenger” word refers to special feature related to voice. For example the gadget ability to reads e-mails. Moreover, we can reply the email with voice record, where the voice record would be in form of attachment e-mail with wav format. According to HP, this way enables message delivery which more practical and personal.

Targeted to bussines segment, iPAQ 512 of course is supplied with lot off features that is supporting productivity like push e-mail and VoIP. To connect to network, there is available GSM, GPRS, WiFi b/g, and Bluetooth connection. And because using Windows Mobile 6 Standard operating system, all computing activities in PC or your notebook can be synchronize with this gadget.

Compared to all PDA phone which been released by HP, this design have been more closingly to a phone. It’s fit and comforts to be grasped. Possibly we can say alike Nokia N70. Even it’s covered by plastic, combination of black and grey makes it seen classy. Fingger track also not seen; of course except at the screen.

Button formation in keypad it’s relatively close, so maybe will annoying big thumb people. Backlight facilitates sees the button in dark place. Besides left-right menu button and Call-End Call button, there is a Home button to returns to initial windows and Back button to return to menu before.

1,3 Megapixel camera in backside only accompanied by mini mirror; no addition flash lamp. It’s also no camera shortcut button. So, to apply camera, we must open Start, Camera. Looks in default menu, in Shortcuts menu there is shorcut button for Take a Photo. Otherwise, we can modify one of them to make shortcut to Camera.

On the top of camera there is a speaker. According , the voice is standard and tends to soft, even at maximum volume. Its more comfort applies the headset to listen music. Headset line-in in phone left under side, adjacent with MicroSD slot.

With feature bases on sophisticated voice, iPAQ 512 Voice Messenger gives satisfaction to its busy user, which I rarely use. Moreover with its average price, makes it more reached compared to one class peripheral like 02 Xda Atom Stealth or Dopod C720w. Unhappily, in the middle of 3G network trends, this peripheral only supports GPRS and EDGE only.

Abdul Taib Mahmud

Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Abdul Taib bin Mahmud (born 21 May 1936 in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia) is the current Chief Minister of Sarawak of Melanau descent.

Personal life and education

He undertook his early schooling at the St. Joseph's Schools in Miri and Kuching, before receiving a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Adelaide in South Australia in 1960.

Returning to Sarawak, he worked in the judiciary until 1963 when he joined the State Legislative Council of Sarawak, where he held various ministries in Sarawak and the Malaysian Parliament, before succeeding his uncle, Abdul Rahman Ya'kub, as the Chief Minister of Sarawak.

He is the father of Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib. He is better known as "Bai Mao"(白毛)in Chinese which means "White Hair". Among Malay speaking communities, he is known as "Pak Uban", which translates as "Old Man with White Hair". Being the Chief Minister of Sarawak for almost 27 years, he has successfully and securely made Sarawak as a kingdom of corruption.

Corruption and Sarawak's logging industry

Charges of deep corruption have surrounded Taib Mahmud on numerous occasions and the dominance of Sarawak's political elite including Taib Mahmud's family in the logging industry is well documented ^[1]. Most recently a foreign wire agency reported on March 29 that Taib has been implicated in a 1.1 billion yen (RM32 million) timber export kickbacks.^[2] It said nine Japanese shipping companies, which transported timber from Sarawak, had allegedly failed to report some 1.1 billion yen in income over a period of up to seven years.The report claimed the money was paid as kickbacks to Sarawak officials via a Hong Kong agent linked to Taib and his family.

The results of the logging industry under Taib Mahmud is that less than 10% of Sarawak's primary forests remain, logging many of the ancestral lands of many of Sarawak's indigenous communities, despite their continued petitions and road blockades ^[3] where forceful dismantling has led to several deaths and regular violent coersion by the Malaysian army, police and logging company enforcers ^[4].

Ever since good Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s exciting anti-corruption programme saw the arrest of Eric Chia and Kasitah Gaddam, “Why only hunt ikan bilis in KL and Sabah? Why not also audit some bigger fish in Sarawak?” For example, many know that the Chief Minister (CM) of Sarawak since 1981, Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s family, has a rags to riches story. Abdul Taib Mahmud insists his family made their money via hard work in business. But many observers remain sceptical and wonder how his siblings and children came into all that wealth, both locally and overseas.

Born into impoverished circumstances in 1936, Abdul Taib Mahmud is an ethnic Muslim-Melanau who traces an aristocratic link to the Royal Court of Brunei. But since becoming CM, Taib has been previously described, at various times, by the international media in the following terms: He is “flamboyant with expensive tastes” and is said to have “purchased the piano of the late American showman Liberace for close to US$2 million”. He “lives in a well-guarded palatial home in Kuching and rides in a cream-coloured Rolls Royce. A dapper dresser, he is partial to double-breasted suits and sports a ring with a walnut-sized red gem surrounded by small diamonds”. Presently, he lives in a palatial private estate outside Kuching along Jalan Bako in a choice location called Demak Laut fronting the Sarawak river.

In the late-1980s, clients loyal to Taib collectively were estimated to control 1.6 million hectares of timber concessions. By 2000, Mahmud family members had major investments not only in Sarawak and Malaysia but also in other parts of the world. Taib Mahmud’s sons, Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib and Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib, are the two key directors of Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS), a multi-million ringgit financial and infrastructure conglomerate listed on the KLSE that thrives because it receives lots of patronage projects from the Sarawak government via PPES Works, a CMS subsidiary company jointly owned with the State government. CMS also owns Bank Utama that engineered a reverse takeover of RHB Bank in 2003. And CMS continues to eye the Bakun mega-project.

Abdul Taib Mahmud’s spouse, Laila Taib, and his children are the majority shareholders of Sitehost Pty. Ltd., Australia, a company which owns the Adelaide Hilton Hotel. Company records dated December 2000 show them holding 95 percent of the company or 9.5 million fully paid up shares of Sitehost. Onn Mahmud (Taib Mahmud’s brother), Taib’s daughter Jamilah Hamidah Taib and her husband Sean Murray, are listed as director-shareholders of SAKTO Corporation, a major real estate operator of non-residential buildings in Ottawa, owning and managing over half a million square feet of prime office space with affiliate offices in the US, Asia, the UK and Australia. As well, they own SAKTO Development Corporation, a multi-million dollar development and construction company in Ottawa, while Jamilah is the sole director of SAKTO Investment Corporation.

Now, it may well be that the Mahmud family is one of the best and most astute business families in Malaysia. And more power to them on that account. But much of their known wealth has arisen during the tenure of Abdul Taib Mahmud as Sarawak CM. Is there then any wonder why there exists so much public scepticism about the sources of Abdul Taib Mahmud’s family wealth? Would not a transparent audit do well to quash such obviously unscrupulous rumours once and for all?

Corruption and Nepotism

In 2008, Mahmud gave his son Sulaiman a seat in the Malaysian parliament. After the son was elected, he was made a deputy federal minister despite not having any political experience. It is almost certain that the son would not even have a political career if the father was not the chief minister.

Mahmud's sister Roziah is one of the most powerful businesswoman in Sarawak with extensive holdings in property and timber business.

Mahmud's brother in law, Tan Sri Aziz Hussain, was appointed state secretary by Mahmud and when he retires, Mahmud appointed him executive director of Sarawak Energy and other companies.

Politics, law and the logging industry

The influence of the logging industry on the politics and laws of host countries should not be underestimated, particularly with regard to obtaining licences to log and to forest policy more generally. There is often a mutually beneficial relationship between logging companies and political elites, involving the acquisition of large private wealth for both parties through bribery, corruption and transfer pricing, at the expense of public benefit through lost revenues and royalty payments and at the expense of social, environmental and indigenous communities' rights.

At the very least, these relationships equate to a conflict of interest; at worst, they suggest an institutionalisation of cronyism and corruption. In most cases, there is a fundamental imbalance of power between economic interests, the State and civil society over the control, use and exploitation of forests. The long-term consequences of this are logging at unsustainable rates for quick profit; illegal felling and illegal trade; disruption of successful local economies; social instability; environmental degradation; and social, cultural and political oppression.

The awarding of concessions and other licences to log as a result of political patronage, rather than open competitive tender, has been the norm rather than the exception in many countries. All too often, the identity of concession holders is surrounded in secrecy, as is the actual location of concessions. Occasionally, this information has been leaked from forestry departments or made available through unofficial channels.

Sometimes, the only information available is a list of the local concession holders rather than the identity of the ultimate owners and/or the sub-contractors who usually reap the rewards. In the case of Sarawak, for instance, the publication of a concession map became a political tool in 1987, when the present Chief Minister succeeded his uncle after an election campaign full of accusations of cronyism and corruption on both sides.

Trans-national logging companies, including Malaysian-based ones, often operate abroad through numerous private, locally-registered companies or as subcontractors to national concession holders. In this way, not only are each company's financial details difficult to track, but the actual links between operations (both nationally and internationally) are also obscured.

On paper, for example, the licence holders may appear to be separate entities. These practices have enabled companies to dominate the forestry sector of a country, for instance Papua New Guinea, or to circumvent maximum concession holding limits, such as those in Cameroon.

In countries which are now opening up their forests to timber exploitation (Guyana and Suriname, for instance), huge concession areas are sought by Malaysian and other trans-nationals. They put pressure on governments to issue logging licences over these areas despite the inadequacies of forestry departments to monitor operations effectively or to enforce legislation, despite indigenous and other local peoples' titles or claims to land and despite the lack of enough state forest to cover their requests.

Companies are not the only beneficiaries of patronage systems which facilitate the obtaining of concessions and other licences to log. Political elites—at both the national and local levels—also benefit through the receipt of funds and the support of wealthy patrons. Whilst these are inevitably difficult to prove, especially in a secretive licensing system, allegations of bribery and attempted bribery of government and community representatives have been made in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands on several occasions.

The world's largest trans-national logging companies are headquartered in a number of home countries, including: USA, Japan, Germany, France, Finland, Sweden, Indonesia and Malaysia. Many have poor environmental and social records in their host countries. Malaysian-based companies have expanded both in size and in geographical spread over the last five years, and now represent a significant presence in the forestry sectors of a number of countries.

A national forest policy was promulgated in Malaysia in 1978, but forestry is managed by the separate state governments. Most tax revenue is collected by the national government, but state governments are allowed to collect land-related revenue, including timber export duties. These policies have encouraged state governments to maximise these revenues, in some cases to the detriment of sustainable forest management.

The development of export-oriented forestry industries in Sarawak first began in the 1950s, with the export of round logs and, to this day, log exports still dominate the state's timber interests. Log production has increased dramatically from 4.7 million cu m in 1970 to a peak in 1991 of 19.5 million cu m. In 1996 it was 16 million cu m, still double the rate recommended by an ITTO mission of 1990. Logging activities have continued at high rates and are widespread all over the state.

About 70% of Sarawak's land area has been licensed to logging companies.

The rapid expansion of the logging industry in Sarawak, including the rise of a few dominant players, is the result of co-operation between corporate leaders and politicians who have control over access to the forest resource.

The top politicians in Sarawak have long been awarding logging concessions to themselves, their families and their supporters. In the 1987 state election, the present Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Abdul Taib Mahmud, accused his predecessor of awarding 1.25 million ha of logging concessions worth RM22.5 billion to himself and his relatives. In retaliation, the previous Chief Minister, Taib's uncle, accused the incumbent of awarding 1.6 million ha to his own friends and family. Datuk James Wong holds at least 180,000 ha in logging concessions himself.

In 1992, a Malaysian academic institute published a detailed study of the relationship between loggers and Sarawak politicians and their families. A case study of Belaga district identified successive forestry ministers from 1966 to 1992, all of whom held shares in companies that had been awarded logging licences. The Lembahan Mewah timber licence, for instance, was 70% owned by the daughters of Rahman Yaakub, Chief Minister from 1970-81. The remaining 30% shares were held by the wife of Tajang Laing, state assemblyman for Belaga district.

Where politicians and their families hold concessions, they take no risk; they invest nothing in the logging operations and pay nothing for the logging licence itself. Some of the licence holders who subcontract logging simply collect a percentage of the income from logging operations as set out in the agreement made with the logging subcontractor.

Such connections between the political elite and logging companies persist to this day. Besides the fact that licensing decisions are made by the Chief Minister in his additional function as state Minister of Resource Planning, new legislation has been introduced that grants the Chief Minister alone the power to revoke timber concessions. No legal challenge to the revocation of licences is now possible and no reasons need be given. This ensures that anyone with a logging interest remains loyal to the Chief Minister or risks losing their licence. Such close connections between politics and timber exploitation means that there is little incentive to protect forests or to protect and enforce native people's rights.
