It has been five years since I am working in the web design industry. I have worked for every kind of clients and companies from start ups to the big companies. Everywhere I observed few common things which I regard as source for the failure of the projects, company and cliff with the clients.

Client is not a god
This is the biggest mistake done by most of the business leaders who makes compulsion on the designer to follow what the client says. Always remember that client is like a baby who would always like things which are not with him. So client generally see some other website and asks the designer to create the same thing. Now this is the occasion where designer’s heart breaks and he looses the interest in the project.

Always be ready with a plan
As a learner of CMMI I would always recommend to plan out everything before breaking into the project. Because it gives you idea what things would take place at what time and also reduces the risk of rework. So that client will not disturb business people who will ultimately force the designer to complete the task. Always remember if you fail to plan you are planning to fail.

Don’t listen each and every change request
This is the most important thing for the business and all its stakeholders. The change request are not generally billed by most of the organisation in case of UI design. Sometimes these UI changes becomes so big that even the initial UI design and the final UI fails to match. This frustrates designer and all the staff. At such situation we need to educate client about the change and why the change is unnecessary in the design.

Google the image
Ahh!! this is the most frustrating issue I have been witnessing in the Indian client community. When designer asks for an image from the stock website the client simply refuses and ask him to search from Google and add good image. I don’t understand one about these clients that if they don’t have budget to buy just a 1$ image then why they invest in the web market. Just go and shout in the market, you can get lot of customer!

Write the content yourself
This is even more humiliating task for the designer. Many clients don’t like to invest in the content writing for web designing project. Why?? when I asked the answer came in the following way…Nobody reads that much, people just see images on the website..and there is no point in hiring a content writer. So are you planning to hire a SEO, I asked for a expected answer..Yes, the answer comes. Now they want to see their website at the first position for each keyword and still don’t want to invest on content writing. Only possible in your dream. May god bless that SEO professional who want to show results in a month!!

Sharpen your axe explains the ability to one to learn something new as and when needed. This can be coming as assignment or a new task but accomplishing and achieving success is the most important part of the story

Friends,
If you can recall the beautiful story of woodcutter who had his axe fallen in river; and he got three choices to get his axe back. He answered all the questions asked by the angel in puerility and was awarded all the three axes; silver, gold and iron. The story always reminds me of our todays IT world; Surprisingly the most important fact here is not about the wood cutters truthfulness but about keeping the axe sharp so you keep cutting more trees. By trees I did not meant actually green vegetation I meant the cutting edge technology code that you developers keep cutting to earn your living.

Actually this is specifically very important working at any level to any situation or at any stage of experience. If you are not able to cut the problems in two quicker than others it means that the end of your career is approaching and you must be subtle enough to now accept it as your state of future. This would be perfectly OK if you have actually done a lot from your side and are on the horizon of your career. But for people who are starting to do things now and have just now started believing in them. Its going to be a bit burning sensation for you. The competition is going on higher altitudes and you have to keep running the stimuli as ever green pinch.

Most importantly my post is a remembrance in accordance to current Information Technology trends; They say with the rapid speed we are trying to invent different qualities and with the rare speed we are traversing, its become very necessary that you have to keep showcasing the best of your qualities. So any point of time you feel you are very good in Java and can have a handful of salary with this technology; Then remember the recession or depth that stricken us back a decade and half ago, or more sooner before last year. Most people had came back to their motherland because their exists no opportunity in the farthest lands.

So friends I have been working in this particular technology race for more than half a decade now.
Interestingly I have not yet been asked to learn anything indifferent excluding the my daily wages job. But I keep myself always prepared for the job no matter what state you wake looking at anyone’s face the knight can strike you anytime. My suggestions to mostly all the freshers and brewed beans who have been working in real small time, Keep your outfits ready and Ironed. Because any day could be your day to wear a new Armour. Best of Luck Friends Hope to keep pinging you on a sudden day of a sudden evening.

Managing Ateration with increasing pressure

This would look like a pretty obvious topic; for all you readers and I guess most of the SME and MID caps would surely love reading this as it practically adds a lot of personnal touch and feeling because what I am going to spell next is a part of the regular day to day life probelms faced by Human Resource executives and Senior Mangement.

So whats the catch, you have a person recruited under your best team. He does effieciently with all his hard works and you pay him handsome amount of returns which is worth his expectations and then one day he comes cribbing to you that he is under paid, no better opportunities he can see under your roof or even he needs to relocate because his family resides a 1000 miles away from his place of work.

I have seen this all and heard from my collegues and friends who thought switching a brand is better way to raise there economic ability or potential. I agree tgis is a fact. People understand because you dont raise someone’s salary because it would add no more pace to your business. So lets see some real problems how people reach this level of saturation; I dont mean I will be writting everything but I suppose some part is surely a real life syndrome.

First Excuse “Better Opportunity”

When a employee says this he means He is fullfilled with all the available technology options and levels of management he can climb. This means he is really looking for chnage no etra Pay can keep him binded. So this also means he has been doing enough for the current state but somehow he feels there are better opportunities on the outer edge.

Second Excuse “High Pay”

This excuse means you are paying me less than a neughbour company because the next door client wanted my skills and after probability of good interview round the next door HR has successfully rated his scale of economy better than you. So in this case you must ask him if he has any plans relating to long term relations; probably he will have a answer similar to NO. So this race of employees believes jumping roofs when it somes to getting more scale.

Third Excuse – “Dont want to speak anything; Let me just leave”

This could probably mean you have a solution for this guy, because now there are many reasons which can make sure he has come to this decision. First is the Manager relation he has are not very straight and he believes that this man who is his manager will make sure he has no credibility and will never make him showcase his own skills. Believe me this is a major part of iteration theory most employees dislike there managers and so they opt changing roofs. But this is soemthing you as HR excutive can handle so take a chance ask him for cup of coffee be more practical explain him chnaging roofs is not something which can help him. Better can sustain and have a notable chnage in Manager. Which could work in better way for the company and individual.

Fourth Excuse – “Location change”

This will happen only when a employee spents some time in a place and then he means looking or shifting himself to different Geographical Area, which means if your company has no branch in new location he will insist on changing his job. So best way to make sure you help him would be give him some pace let him talk to his closed ones and convince him to understand that if he can arrange better lifestyle if his family comes where he is now. This would not work in all cases but to some extent a HR executive can really cange individual thoughts.

Final Excuse – “Onsite Opportunity etc”

This means the individual has been very well appreciated by the next door HR and they really have shown him some fruitful promises which makes him loose interest in current area and try his luck. So what can you do talk to him tell him you have kept him up and running in bad times of the company. And may be the skills he learnt are part of your regular excercise. So he better needs to reach better levels and earn more knwoledge because whet he has already may look sufficient but is actually not very in depth. I suggest show him his place and let him understand where does he stands if he leaves now. Explain him where he can reach after sometime time.

The practical theory is You Can/Not Stop Someone Leaving. So better the further is the best policy a few months increase in his resignation plans will provide you scope tyo achieve a better ro similar dignitary for the same chair.

I hope you like reading my posts and specially a big “Thank You readers for your awesome responses” they add life to my words and thoughts.

Management this is the first mantra in doing anything starting from your regular school work to getting your business deals signed. While now who is doing it just creates the priority and pace according to individual experiences. While I would really be surprising you dearest readers as what’s all about the resource management I am going to talk in this post; well let me be very particular I am not going to post anything on managing your systems or processors or neither your technical resources; having said that I believe I will be speaking about managing really important asset of any organization which makes it fully functional in terms of quality & conventional source that’s equity & collectables.

Let’s discuss something on managing your people I would not call them resources as they have brains and they can surely go against you if not taken serious care of them. I will call them people or followers.

So how do you manage them they know your knits and tricks; they understand everything about you they are inspiring because of you they motivate because of you; you showcase or are really a person they love to follow. Yes that’s the point if you have ever fought getting really work done from you private contractor or outsourced agent I believe you will agree to this; Its as good as getting the honey from the bees while you will have tough time when you really don’t have better scaling with your people.

Let’s understand this with some rules

Be purely professional

This purely means you are not recruiting your teams of people to create a family in the office you already have it at home. So be clear in terms of getting and explaining them that you pay them to get something working or developed for you or your management.

Keep things transparent

Let them understand that everything is transparent and you focus on success as well as on failure you don’t feel bad when you fail to really be at par with them. You show up a very healthy atmosphere and make sure every good deed is rewarded and bad deed is well punished and observed for no repetition.

Understand your people’s mind

People behave differently and everyone is a individual expression because no matter where you stand it’s like watching every person in different manner so similar policies may be better if you just want a social equality but everyone has to be treated individually. For you everyone stands at same level and you don’t be biased for some Mr. X or some Mr. Y so in such cases you will always be loved by your people because it always happens you just get carried away by some good thinker or better social guy but it can bring the rapport of yours for other trustworthy humans. They stand with you only when they believe you are with them and one person on top has to assure that’s you have to assure that you are with all and not with anyone.

Control your Emotions

Always remember people working with you I would not say under you as they are just bifurcated with experience and knowledge and not with any other aspect. And all of your followers will always keep watching every action and reaction of yours so don’t just throw your ideas and qualities or emotions as you would do when you stand with your wife/girl friend/mother; they are your family and you are free to express yourself. But in the work atmosphere do not ever do it. That’s like bringing like thinking great minds together. And that’s what we believe will create rotten eggs in basket. Just be very specific and normalized expressions are allergic and can be hampered in access amount.

Normalize every situation

It’s a big release and everyone is trying hard all are working on same direction but you the leader have that in you in positivity which says Yes I knew this would happen that shows your experience and quality in getting things aligned and making them come positively true. Most of the managers get mistaken and show up with great claps or large round of applauses that’s correct but it must be done in aspect oriented way which would create positive attitude and not jealousy or anger for others. Motivating someone is good but making him feel unconfident is very dangerous and sometimes it can strike back.

So all dearest readers who have tough time managing people and getting them work better and shape smarter for you; let me know if these tips help you and they can be sustainable enough to execute; I learnt this from my experience and I believe its always good to share the proportion where I can also learn a lot of good stuff in form of comments from my readers.

I am sorry for not covering all small points of managing because this is not a post about making people learn the art of human management but just a gist of summary to direct you in that direction.

I have been working in the software industry for half decade now; And have seen that there is a large valley(Gap) of understanding between the clients and developers. Seriously speaking this is an really BIG problem so what most of the companies in the industry do is hire Business developers or Analyst who are really capable of pulling the stream in right direction but most often they end up delivering the wrong message to developers or project managers which leads to either development of wrong software or some features which are over kill for client and they readily end up looking better organization.

So to end this typo and make sure the client is transparent and product is being developed to his requirements we are odd to take some necessary steps which surely will or may look rigid but will bring fruitful results in long term relationship.

Let’s understand this very clearly as being Business Developers or Software developers

Client is the king and we must always give him what he needs

Client must be motivated to accept guidance and trust our knowledge

Client must be educated of the process and mandatory business rules

Client must know his end users and we must suggest the right approach understanding his end users

No matter whatever he says our mantra must be “Everything is possible”

So now how we achieve everything of the above semantics

SO when we sign any business proposal with client keep him very transparent and well educated of the fact that all the requirements are clearly adhered and the software or product will bound all possible processes in its development and deployment. Do not keep any hidden cost it gives a greedy attitude towards the approach. Always make sure you are keeping the client very transparent of the resources needed and tasks completed in very accustomed way which necessarily means he is not been hidden of anything or something that’s going to be miraculous.

Client must be shared with expertise and experience of your in industry with similar executions and propositions already completed successfully. This enriches the idea in clients mind that we know more than him about his market and target audience. And when he gains this kind of feeling he blindly trusts the company and asks for relevant suggestions and queries this would be win win situation because both the client and company are really in appropriate relation which is based on trust.

Client must be educated of the process and be made a part of requirement gathering process. The clients in today’s market have changed they are not nutshell onions but educated and high profile people who have clear vision about their industry. So educate him about methodologies and process that you follow May it be Agile or Traditional or waterfall. Lets tell him how his software or product is important to us and how we make sure that there are no open edges for any kind of obstructive errors or mistakes.

Client must always know why and what is the purpose of his product. This can be clear vision or potential proof of Concept kind of idea. This means you must ideate him and provide him better approaches to do realistic market surveys and help him understand his users, if you see something won’t work the way it’s proposed you must make necessary changes so the client is happy and relentless of his value for every penny spent on the development and offered to you. He must achieve the real value of his expenses. We must always take care that “Every Penny Counts”.

Last but not the least, always propose a solution to every problem may be not right away but after appropriate study and research make sure you have all the exemplary counts and metrics to justify your solution. You last deed is to always be feasible for clients to trust you; they must encouraged to have set of mindsets that everything in world can be done by you in some or the other way.

Just listen to them carefully and be polite and that’s the only magic to start an experimental relationship. With you and your clients being happy you are always winning the race.

“Great Enterprises are not born they are formed with right study and thought”

The year 2010 has arrived and we can see a lots of buzz regarding technology and quickly building or getting a quick start. So the market and the consumers are expecting a very fast development in terms of building websites and promotional aspects. so in this small content I will explain the best suited and freely available tools and technologies which can help a lot of startups to build there portfolio. One thing I believe everyone would agree that today starting a software company is no big deal. we can see smaller syndicates been created all over but the important point is how many of the startups are really successful. how many names just rule the scene.

I am not being very biased but what i saw is what i learn, and based on my experience I suppose RubyOnRails as a technology can be best suited for any startups. so what do you need to start your project on RoR. let me be more clear that you would need absolutely nothing to start your project on RoR. so everything is purely open source that means you have the ability to develop and distribute. Ruby On Rails applications can be developed without any traditional approach like waterfall or SDLC model. So you can start an rails application with according to clients requirements. that means you developed a small component and your client needs something different than in rails you can very quickly make these changes.

Which means your clients are happy because they can see working structure getting developed in incremental fashion and they know how the whole ecosystem is getting created. they act as very important part of the development process. They can guide the developers at most of the aspects specifically with Business or Domain knowledge.

Now this also solves a lot of problems for developers as while developing you dont have to worry about the domain related questions but directly start building the application in a way which will make sure developers spend time doing better coding and developing applications rather than in requirement gathering and getting workflows clarified with clients.

So the best possible way to get more building blocks ready for your startup and progress consistently in getting the real problems solved for the consumers or end users.

This article is continue with last post on “Ruby On Rails Always Wins The Race For Its Simplicity”

Plugins are code blocks bundled as we have packages in .NET.

so there are a lot of plugins which the developer can integrate in his application and get his app running, so rails application use the concept of DRY (Do Not Repeat Yourself) and Convention over Configuration.

Some Plugins we already worked on:-

Will Paginate

Acts as Authenticated

FCK editor

TinyMCE editor

Attachment Fu

Acts as Tree

Acts as Rateble

Acts as polymorphs

Annote Models

SSL Requirement

Comatoes

Faster CSV

Merchant Gateway

Account location

RESTFUL

Restful architecture is the open module to intercommunicate between two different technology applications. Eg Facebook or twitter app’s uses restful architecture to involve third party development into its domain.

Why REST

REST is Representation State Transfer, Data is transferred in meaningful manner so that their needs no parsing at clients end, most used format are JSON and XML. Rest brings the power of accessibility in rails application.

Deployment architecture we follow

Linux, Apache, Mysql Rails.

Nginx, Thin, Mongrel, FastCGI.

ActiveScaffold

This is a nice way of data representation in rails, using active scaffold can reduce overhead of creating nurturing UI elements for basic views like Listing, create a destroy, edit and update. It helps by using the same UI elements with variety of combinations. To suit the end user requirement.

Ruby on rails is a web framework created or developed by David Heinmer Hannson, in 2004. Ruby on Rails is human interfaced language used to develop some very robust web applications which could possibly never eat up your memory as normal desktop applications do. Ruby on Rails always wins the race for its simplicity and the ability to crunch hard core algorithms giving them face to speak about.

what are the benefits of using Ruby on rails:-

1. Ruby a dynamic OOPS oriented language.
2. Rails a robust framework build using ruby.
3. Ruby is scripting language so development is as fast as it can be.
4. Ruby using interpreter, against patrons like C, C++, .NET, Java etc use compilers.
5. Rails uses Agile web development methodologies it means run time code generation is possible, for clients it means you dont like it, we dont need it. The ability to adapt at quantum level leverages the possibility of using super imposible designs in Rails.

6. Rails can be pretty much used as structured programming language or can be simple used to write noting scripts which can quickly quench any developer’s deadline requirements.
7. Rails has a boost of domains which make it popular, help on rails is freely available and “The GOOD NEWS”!! Rails is Free, it means using rails for development will not cost any development architecture pennies. Rails comes under MIT Open source license which increases the sweetness of using it in development.
8. Rails supports most RDBMS, and natively evolved with MySql, then Db2, Postgress and Sqlite.
9. Rails has a good hosting spaces available like Media-Temple and GoDaddy.

Rails natively supports

Database

JavaScript

Jquery

Windows

Linux

Captcha

Image magick

Paypal

GWT(Google Web Toolkit)

Dojo

Scriptaculous

AWS Cloud

MT Grid hosting

Now listing all these features, means rails is a boon for developers and Elixer for Organizations which cab quickly get there domains up and running.

Why rails applications can be build quickly

Rails applications have a good sense of schema and migration management system which is know as RAKE DB so these beautiful rake commands are nothing but scripts which basically can tear down your database in one go and rebuild in just few seconds even faster before you get a cup of coffee from the vending machine.
so the workflow is designed by the developer himself as against traditional systems where the document speaks and developer just retains to follow the sense dictated in document but in creation of rails application the developer is the sole identity to manage the system, he can generated code snippets and build the whole system which can be dropped at any time and is also possible to roll back at a version far back away.
