The tension of mediums collides in a multi-media tangle all asking the same question: utility or non-utility? Painting, sculpture, screenprinting, embroidery, crafts. The avenues as well: embroidery hoops, stretcher bars, fabrics and clothing, zines and papergoods. Trained as a painter, Penny Spencer (turned fibers artist, aka Madam Chino) has been colliding, joining, and bending mediums and avenues into somewhat strange features. Bound by the terms of social accessibility, utility rules the majority of work produced. The underlying urge to create forces its way through an expectant room, leaving evidence of its unruly nature in completely unusable forms. Narratives that leave viewers wondering who and what=for?

Positive Posters by Penny Spencer is a series of brainstorms for posters created while working with a group of kids at Agape Community Center. We each published our own positive posters, but this was my set created for group projects with students to join in on when their attendance wasn't perfect; doing both t-shirt screenprinting and poster-making.

Giant file cabinets are time capsules both purposefully and accidentally.

Organizing the proper system to match a process is an architecture in itself, yet again, a note slipped into the wrong file or simply a folder becoming a now-defunct process can temporarily or permanently sever an item from relevancy for pure dislocation.

Once in a while, we go back in to clear out, add to, and reconfigure, finding new life for old items or maybe placing the item with its original purpose after all.

So Penny alas, is currently formatting this small set of copywritten images into mini-zine format! This is ya pre-release preview!

{WCAP: FIELDWORK} Painting and Drawing Outdoors

This last summer I was invited to do a class at Waukesha Community Art Project and came up with the course "FIELDWORK: Painting and Drawing Outdoors" (tm) to gain inspiration, appreciation, and observational skills in nature.

We created journals and pressbooks:

In the end, we took our favorite items and framed them with thrifted frames and background mats that brought out the best of our colors. There was a small group show with these paintings in WCAP. Usually, items sold are donated by the students and funds return to the centre.

Recently while spending more time at home, due to cold weather and an awesome boyfriend, moving computer printer and scanner to the house has been a giant catalyst for doing new work outside of the studio.

India ink has great appeal on its own: it dries dark, it's easy to photocopy and reproduce for zines and screen prints, it can be used on a light table and painted on typing paper (the perfect size for scanning), it doesnt require heavy toxins or much space to use and store. But, combined with photoshop as a tool, the possibilities are limitless because black and white is no longer a limitation. It's almost hard to believe that this isn't a preliminary phase for all great paintings, as watercolor once was not even considered a genre but to test draw for larger oil works, but for people who require instant gratification, do not have patience or much storage space, this is the best alternative.

Water colorist and fashion diva, a collection of both landscape paintings and fashion model figurative works arose from the depths and organized themselves on my computer. From the combinations of these figurative and landscape works experimentally, and the fashion stage name gifted by life enthusiast Theresa Columbus, the new blog $TAR HAMILTON was birthed. It is being updated with one or two new images each week. Follow on tumblr! {LOOK NOOK: Flyer Heaven}

Flyer Heaven is the place where all of the fliers I have designed from years past now live. FLYER HEAVEN is a set on Flickr that you can go to visit them. The history of my flier designs dates back to pre-photoshop-skill days when I would paint on vellum and go to kinkos to do all the enlarging and shrinking physically with the xerox, scissors, and glue.

Thankfully, I have been developing greater skills in Photoshop, and no longer have to spend days in the dreaded Kinko's. I have also found a great source for copy-right free images on Flickr, called The Commons where you can use any of the photos as long as you give due credit to the archive that took the time to scan and list them.

I have been learning a lot of secret tricks and keeping files of scanned textures and drawn shapes, enlarging my fonts collection, and learning to use wingdings graphically. Using Automation I have constructed buttons that allow me to do many functions such as "floating objects", "black and white", "black layers" and other such useful steps.

A MONTESSORI MURAL

This fall the Montessori School that I am currently working at as a Paraprofessional Teaching Assistant, has moved to a very amazing old public high school building named after one of the founders of our city (Milwaukee, WI) Solomon Juneau, which has been combined with Montessori High School and renamed to become MacDowell Montessori k-12.

For those unfamiliar with Montessori, it is a style of learning that focuses on intrinsic motivation and independence within a community. The materials are conceptual, exquisite, beautiful, and promote the natural unfolding and deeper understanding of concepts through the visual presentation of mathematical and language functions.

Milwaukee Wisconsin is top in the country for both its Montessori program and Montessori teacher training.

I was asked to bring my personal skills in art/design/murals to the walls of our new cafeteria with drawings inspired by Montessori materials. I was charged with the duty of creating a composition based on these tools of learning. The process entailed drawing materials, inking them via light table, scanning the inkings, converting them to both color and black and white, and finally rearranging the black and whites into compositional arrangements to be projected via transparency onto the walls.

The final image will have a Montessori quote made out of sandpaper letters and a beadchain boarder! It will be completed with the children. In the mean time, we took advantage of General Electrics Volunteer Day and used their employee volunteers to commence with the project.

{WCAP} Hero Mural Progress~!

Since my original post about returning to Waukesha Community Art Project we have been very busy on our HERO MURAL! Here are some of the photos of our progress! First, our kids chose heroes/heroines based on a long list of significant social issues that we brainstormed together. After learning about their lives, we determined what their OBSTACLES and ACCOMPLISHMENTS were/are. Then, we converted these ideas into symbols. Our first project was to create a stamp using styrofoam plates and/or carved foam board as block prints of the heroes' accomplisments. Next we began a series of drawing projects on colorful paper using SYNECTICS a very interesting way of creative seeing, to create our own patterned paper, that we would thenceforth cut down to create quilted boarders for our portraits. Quilts have a symbolic significance that represents community! Not only do they visualize how the "whole is greater than the sum of its parts" (gestalt) but they take a whole lot of time to create and in the process invent the meaning of working for a greater good. Our students learned how quilt patterns are invented through a process of paper folding, and created their own inventive quilt squares in the corners of their final works. and finally we were able to use the process of decoupage to apply the newly formed quilts and apply the handmade colored paper synectics patterns in an interesting color scheme and pattern formation along the boarders of the wood. The kids have also been working on wallpaper patterning of their heros OBSTACLES, and we are exploring the ELEMENTS of art and PRINCIPLES of design to translate the pictures of our heros into legible areas of lights and darks for our portraits! {It's a SIGN} Rochambo Business Sign

Here is the Rochambo Sign I painted over a series of steps! This sign is double sided so it took twice as long. I used Latex Indoor/Outdoor Enamel Paint. They discontinued the orange, so the last one on the shelf was old as heck and like bbq sauce, and required 12 layers which I ended up having to cut back and forth with the green. In the hurry, the layers didn't dry, and now they are already wrinkled in 4 days. Beware of bad paint! I will have to redo it. We also are going to really seal the heck out of it. Sign painting isn't a fast job when layers and doubles are required.

i had a struggle with this image because although i was drawing my inspiration from native american culture, i did not wish to create a stereotypical image.

i redrew my friend in a different pose, but decided that it didn't fit in the composition which was drawn for the original pose. The image is one i captured on my camera of my model friend Samantha Sanborn wearing my dress from last year.

in the end I took out the headband and turned the arrow into a heart to soften the effect.

Transums: migrating geese paper cutouts with fishingline and magnets
Doors: printed cloud animals with blue glass film for shadows, raindrops painted on them in navy blue
Side: black paper painted balloons with nylon and magnets, random clouds, cardboard city and mountains

wax paper on the window is cool, but also pretty translucent depending on the light.

I used rubber cement which i'm not sure is the easiest clean up. maybe as much as paint. not a prefered option.

printed black on clear, animal footprints will scamper through the lower portion of the frames of the swarmway

painted cut outs of animal silhouettes leaping from one direction to the other, leading to the cinema

there is a nylon string across the segway with magnets holding these objects: a fabric leaf, and a 8x10 cardstock cutout leaping hound. They did not feel too heavy on the strand

paper forests will expand the floor to ceiling on side panels and enclose the central area. green paper chains with leaves and tendrils will drape through. possible grass border with painted cardboard

i pinned the butcher paper down to the carpet. it cut easily as i removed the negative space with an exacto blade

finished cut out with enclosed shapes and closed configuration for easy placement on the window frame. top and bottom edges can be taped for support, wrapped around a dowel like a scroll for transport and retaped on the window frame over the taped edge. mini peninsulas are kept short and dont flop down.

leaf links are applied directly to the branches, but can be applied to a paperchain and strung through the window. Another technique includes spirals for tendrils.

Taking things apart into their basic forms is a great way to reach new results in putting them back together. I am interested in portraying landscapes of places i perhaps may never go. Building pictionaries helps with practice in seeing things as parts. The fun is trying to see what repetition goes on around you, and examining it as a single unit. The units are then conjoined and become a series. This allows your hand and eye to speak fluently the language of pictorial representation.

Egrets are a type of Heron. They were hunted mainly in the time when millinery demanded long beautiful feathers for fancy plumed hats. Egrets feathers are exquisite, long and delicate during the mating season so that they can be identified by mates.

{MYtinerary} news

This is the practice template for the day pages of MyTINERARY 3rd ED. that is still in the works. In the mean time there is MYtinerary 2nd Edition still available for the new year! SHOP PENNY SPENCER

I am experimenting with digital coloring and using drawings as objects that can become patterns. The page structure is set up as a central focal area with bordered areas filled thematically. The object is to create backdrop for planning.

Some news for MYtinerary: I am planning on making quarter sheets, and printing the covers professionally so they can be uv coated for extra sturdiness.

There are nature themes that move through in a seasonal fashion for each week, although they will still be fill-in-your-own dates so that they can also be academic too.

I've been writing under the blog: http://www.madamchino.blogspot.com/ as a clothing artist and gallery showroom owner. But i also have the guise "Penny Spencer" as a writer and self publisher. In a push to solidify my contents, I am starting this week a new blog as a place to put my illustration work and book publishing content.

Recently I was inspired to create a new set of work: Portraits. Who is worthy of having their portrait done? All, for one or another reason. But i realized that endangered species are the most worthy. I have commenced!
