Robby Grant is a Memphis indie rock icon. I suspect Robby will find that description a bit jarring, but it’s true. For the past twenty years, Robby has been one of rock music’s backbones in the city that first gave it life. I have enjoyed Robby’s music in every form that it’s taken, from his hip-hop and funk influenced early days with Big Ass Truck to his consistently surprising and even delicate bedroom recordings with Vending Machine.

This is the first time Robby and I have ever spoken; despite the fact that I’ve seen and heard him sing and play guitar dozens and dozens of times. It was a little thrill for me even if it betrays the original idea for the show.

He was generous with his time and thoughtful. Robby even broke a little bit of news about a possible Big Ass Truck reunion later this year.

If you haven’t already, you should check out Robby’s solo project Vending Machine

guaranteed payday loans
<a href='> and his collaboration with River City Tanlines front woman Alicja Trout, MouseRocket.

David has two great blog that you should check out. The first is his thrifting blog Second Hand Underground. It’s both very well written and witty. It’s hard to argue with that.

The other is, Oh Dear God Why. It too is well written and witty but for completely different reasons.

We had fun talking and I hope you like listening.

Finally, this podcast has existed as a pretty constant project for just over a year now. I’m happy about that. Thanks for listening.

Back in 2000, the debut was a local sensation. If you haven’t seen the film, Eric turned a hell of a performance for someone who hadn’t really been in a feature length film before. Try to catch it if you can.

After a several year absence, Eric is back producing, directing, writing and even acting in some projects. Eric, Chad Barton and Shelby Baldock at Piano Man Pictures have made some great shorts this year.

Emboldened by the reception from their shorts, the crew has launched a Kickstarter campaign to make a feature length film entitled Lights, Camera, Bullshit. It looks like an immensely worthy and fun project. You should go drop off a twenty or three at their Kickstater page.

I sat down with Eric and talked about what it was like to be involved with the whirlwind of indie success, deciding to commit his life to moviemaking and where film is going. Eric was a good sport and put up with me as well as could be expected considering we were both bone sober and drinking coffee on a Sunday afternoon.

Steve Ross is a blogger. He is the local political writer behind the impressively deep Vibinc site. Recently the local daily announced a paywall and Steve wrote up one of the best local pieces about it. I thought that was as good an excuse as any to haul him in, mic him up and make him talk.

We talked about blogging as an alternative to traditional journalism, media conglomerates and our culture’s feeling of entitlement. The last few episodes have stretched longer and longer, so I thought I’d try to make this on a bit more easy to swallow. Because of that you may hear a rough edit or two and for that, I’m sorry. I’m still learning as I go. Thanks for being patient with me.

You can read Steve’s posts, here or follow him on Twitter, here.
You should, he’s good at the internet.

<itunes:summary>Steve Ross is a blogger.

</itunes:summary>

Things have not gone smoothly for the podcast the last couple of weeks. I taped an episode with Gary Bridgman and my lack of foresight and preplanning really bit me on the ass. Gary and I talked primarily about nature conservation, his Memphis Flyer cover story on the Nonconnah Creek and Memphis in general. It was a good talk. I was a little unprepared and it showed. Overall though, Gary pulled me through.

When I sat down to listen to it and edit, it was clear this was a disaster. Gary’s mike only recorded out of the left channel but that was fixable. It became clear though that the recording was unusable.

I’ve run into a ton of problems making this podcast but this one was a particular heartbreak. I’m sorry to Gary and to those of you who’ve been asking about a new episode. I feel pretty glum about it. I’m going to try to dust myself off and get another one going this week.

Ugh.
