So you can understand Sony’s reasoning! This project is a year long contract so we’ll be adding new web videos over the year.
All the videos were scipted in house, directed by me and produced by Marcus. James Davis operated the camera and we edited in house delivering full HD and a variety of optimised files for use on the net.
We have lots of ideas for online video and are entering a phase of pitching these new ideas specifically for the smart TV market. We are also moving into 3D production, again specifically for smart TV.
To make full use of the playlist player click on this icon and all the videos are displayed along the bottom of the screen.
Once they are all live we shall publish a playlist of all the videos. Thanks to Alex Kramer for presenting and to the Pepper Rafferty Team for doing such great work.
The videos were scripted, shot and edited entirely by Pepper Rafferty. We shot the video at Sony UK, once again cutting down of costs for the client. We edited in house and no chromakey or powerpoint were used in this production! Our client is delighted with the end result.
Here is a sample of what is to come,

In particular a script to be delivered by someone on screen. I have written and edited many scripts for television while working at the BBC and ITV o some of the UK’s most popular Entertainment shows.
Writing a script is a joy, especially for me, having Irlands Syndrome meant English was not a subject I looked forward to at school. I loved creating stories, but getting them down on paper was an issue as this form of word blindness is debilitating and confidence bashing. I can remember the first words of mine spoken on Television, they were by Anneka Rice on a Show called “Combat”, it was a simple piece to camera and Anneka said what shall I say? When I heard my words spoken on the TV some weeks later I was like a big kid, very exciting. I am happy to report that excitement is still there.
When I lived in London my balcony over looked a courtyard and I could hear neighbours watching their TV’s. I was working with Davina McCall at the time on a show called “Don’t Try this at Home”. Writing for Davina was great fun, and I would sit on my balcony during the transmission of the shows and listen to people laughing at some of the lines I had written, I know it was her delivery, but I’d quietly think to myself “I wrote that!”
So my credentials over these are my top tips for writing a script of an online video.

Write as you speak.
This is perhaps so obvious it may seem patronising! I think my writing is better for never having been a “writer.” We speak very differently from the way we write. We use simple plain English and our grammar is very different. We don’t use words like “whilst” (a particular pet hate of mine) we write it, if you must, but we never say it. There are many instances of this type of word. If you read out loud what you have written you should hear any words you wouldn’t normally use.

Find a Voice.
When you write a script hear your voice as you write, if you are writing for someone else hear their voice, it will help you with point one.

Personality.
When we write personal email or text we are chatty. A script has to be chatty, you need to add words like “Right” at the beginning of sentences, even the odd “OK” don’t forget this script needs personality, don’t fill it with your normal ticks – mine is the old “Yes, No” prefix in answer to a question. But do give the script the personality of the person delivering. Even if the script is a technical demonstration or educational, the temptation is to write perfect English. It will sound written and really boring.

Be Authentic.
This is probably the single most important thing when writing. Particularly when writing for someone else. You must use their voice, and their thougts. If you are selling you company and employ a presenter to make the video, remember they are “a presenter” not an employee. Don’t write it as if they were working at the company, you have to write in the third and not first person to maintain authenticity.

Simple is good.
Don’t try to be cleaver, use words you know, it you have to look up words for their meaning don’t use them, don’t use a thesaurus unless it is to jog you memory.

Repetition
If you listen to people talk they often repeat themselves, don’t in your script, sure set out an outcome, deliver the content and summarise. But if you are talking about a company, a product or a concept don’t keep repeating their names. Even is you are describing how to use a TV remote don’t keep saying “remote”.

Editing
If you give your script to someone to proof read, you are often say, can you check over this? Often the people who proof read for me are good at English, I am not so I am really saying, can you check my spelling. What I am not asking is for them to remove all my personality, take out all my carefully placed redundant words of personality. SO if you are asked to edit or proof read a script, you too must use a voice, the voice of the person who is going to deliver the words on screen.

Conclusion
Writing a script is very rewarding, it can be great fun and it is certainly very creative. I am sorry if any of the above seems so simply as to be patronising. In mitigation I would say that I have seen enough bad scripts and heard enough bad video to justify this post. And remember professional script writer make a living because written for the screen in any context is not as easy as it sounds, partly because if you stick to my guidelines you will hear the most natural and effortless words when your script is delivered.

It’s great stuff, having built a fair few of their products I can personally attest to the quality!

We kept costs to a minimum on these shoots, mainly by actually going to their warehouse to shoot the footage. We set up our portable studio in a quiet back room. The main advantage for the client is the reduction in transport costs. Shipping the product to our studio is expensive. It is much more cost effective for us to go to them. There is another saving in time too, it can take us a fair time to assemble the chairs and repacking them afterwards is a nightmare. By going to the warehouse the items can be assembled by experts and either repacked or taken directly to the factory outlet to be sold as ex-demonstration models. This reduces the amount of time we take to shoot. All these savings are passed onto our clients, they get a cost effective video and we have fewer back problems and broken nails.

It is also a good time to look at the playlist player. At first glance it doesn’t look any different. Yet it contains as many videos as you can fit to a playlist in the same space as a single player. And you can update the play list at anytime without having to re-embed the player on your web site or blog. Simply delete or add videos to your playlist.

Now to get to the playlist features on the player. Simply hover over the video to reveal the control bar, then click on the icon I have highlighted below. NOw you will get access, through a nice tabbed set of thumbnails, to any video in your play list. You can scroll and click on any in the window and they will play on the large player, neat!

We like playlist player but would love even more customisation. Particularly the ability to default to having all the thumbnails revealed in the initial state. We’d also like more control over all the players. I know you can get third party solutions to make up players using the google youtube API, or you can design your own players using the API straight. But its not that easy for the regular web user, it needs a knowledge of actionscript etc. Still you can easily set up what we have here as an example. Together with some great new pepper Rafferty videos delivered at a great price!

I have recently been involved in a spirited debate on Linkedin entitled “How Much would you pay for a Video?” An interesting and diverse set of opinions. Ranging from the usual mob declaring that because they are so experienced people will pay the earth just to have them near their brand, right the way across the spectrum to no one cares about quality when they can do it on a flip cam and post it to youtube.
I always come in for a fair amount of stick in these arguments. My view is that it is actually horses for courses and people will pay according to the value they place on their vision for their video. My mission is to stop people being fleeced by the extreme ends the spectrum. The top end where people still charge advertising budgeted rates, with vastly over specced equipment, and the bottom where people still get robbed by handicam man ending up with a video they could probably have done themselves for nothing.
But there is also another issue that is really close to my heart. People who judge quality on their perception of high technical standards. A good engaging piece of video can come in any quality, from good to bad. It’s just as true that total rubbish can be delivered in the best technical quality money can buy. I am sure we have all seen great examples of that in the cinema, where the promise of a multi million pound blockbuster simply leaves you wanting both your money and the 67 minutes of your life paid back in full.
My point is that we should judge things on their ability to fulfil the intended purpose. Did that video tell me the answer to the question I had in my head when I pressed play? Did it sell me the product, did it make me laugh, did it inform me? If it did those things then it was worth exactly what you paid for it.
Yes, I know you need to have been able to see and hear the content but really that’s it.
My own personal test is the moment I start looking at the quality, the second I ask myself – “how did they do that?”, the instant I start giving the talent performance notes or wardrobe pointers, then I know it is a bad video. If I am not absorbed by the content and my professional head goes into gear, then the video has not captured my audience head and it fails and I give it no second chance, my mind is made up in about 7 seconds.
Online video or web video is still finding its price point, pay to little and you may as well have done it yourself for nothing. Pay too much and you are throwing money away. Do pay for experience, and that experience should be used to deliver you a great video that looks really good on the net, it plays without stuttering, you can see and hear the content but above all else that experience is used to deliver you great value for money.

The event is staged by Two local independent women’s clothes shops. Boudoir Femme an award winning boutique, stocking a unique mix of stylish clothing, accessory & shoe brands. And Prohibido Lingerie offering an exciting range of lingerie brands which cover the spectrum of fun fashion, luxury everyday, exclusive designer and classic elegance as well as beautiful silk nightwear and cosy pyjamas.
The Charity the event is supporting does really great work, Red Balloon Learning Centres provide full time education and suppport for children who can’t go to school becasue of bullying. Do take a look at their web site here.
I think the event is sold out now which is great news, we are very happy to support the important work of this charity.

These videos will be part of their “How to…” series, showing the brilliant solutions Sony equipment offers to its users. There are some really exciting new ideas too, particularly from Sony TV’s. The log line is “Where TV meets the internet” and “make.believe”, there are some great new developments. The videos will be “presented” and are designed to show what you can do with sony equipment and how easily you can do it. Destined for the Sony youtube channel and anywhere else we can get them viewed, these will be high production value videos but again we are offering our client real value for money. Our experience enables us to reduce the amount of time we spend shooting and editing the videos, without it impacting on the quality. As we know the how “how to..” category is the most searched on youTube, the videos will show how Sony products solve problems making it easier for people simply use technology rather than get frustrated with it. So watch this space, we are developing the scripts as I write and we shoot very soon.

We shot all the product video and the faq video content. I wish the site the very best of luck.
We are very happy with the product videos, it is always a challenge to make so many videos in one go. We think we have maintained a very high quality throughout.
The issue with all video is that it isn’t as easy as, make video, post and watch the dollars roll in. Careful planning and a strategy needs to be in place. The videos may need uploading to a public site to benefit from the SEO opportunities. Each video needs very clear links back to the main site. A promotional video to drive shoppers to to the site is another good idea and should be distributed freely on al the public sites. This video should ideally be information based and not a simple hard sell or out and out advert. I am going to write some pointers for a video strategy over the weekend. In the mean time this is worth reading.

I have had time to explore the player design element and you can see the rough and ready first attempt below. the QR code and blog banner are click able. Every thing is customisable in terms of size and position. The interface is drag and drop. The back ground is a png file I quickly made up on photoshop, I used png to get the rounded corners as the files is on a transparent back ground, but jpeg etc are all supported. The interface lacks a bit of accuracy, especially if you are used to photoshop, but you can punch in the numbers of you need pixel perfect size ad positioning.
I like the platform and I am sure it is a work in progress. I’d like to see a few improvements. More elements in the build section to play with, so I can add more artwork. As you can see I couldn’t rid the thumbnail section of the padding on the right. I am sure these tiny issues will improve as they get feedback.
My biggest issue is that the only adjustment available on the control bar is the colour. I think the supplied controls are a tad ugly and far too large. And the play button on the still is a bit large and the background should be transparent, once inplay the central play button is great. But all in all I would happily recommend this to anyone even these low rez videos have great quality, very sharp and the play back judder free. If you’d like to know more or would like us to design and build players for you do contact us. Depending on what you need we could easily design and implement a player to your specifications.
PS if you use the platform yourself do remember to activate the player o the final screen. The player will not render on your site unless you do, took me a few moments to work that out. I would suggest this is an issue with the examples on the site as they come up player not available.
