In Peter Mattei’s invigorating portrayal, Don Giovanni’s defiance of convention and boldness in the face of death are outward signs of an inextinguishable energy that animates him and those around him. A huge mirror is revealed, reflecting the auditorium and the audience, but more importantly, Don Giovanni has taken control of the stage. Michael Levine’s sets thereafter consist largely of variations on images of the curtain and the auditorium, as the action sometimes unfolds as a play within a play.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:15.0pt;mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align: none;text-autospace:none"&gt;&lt;span lang="EN-US"&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"   style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/10/arts/10iht-loomis10.html?scp=1&amp;amp;sq=don+giovanni&amp;amp;st=cse"&gt;In Act II, when exchanging clothes with his servant, Leporello, to further a lovemaking adventure, Don Giovanni briefly instructs his doubting underling, then sits down to follow the action like a director. At the end of Act I, when Don Giovanni looks cornered, the curtain suddenly falls, knocking his pursuers’ swords from their hands as he escapes through a stage box. As the others launch into the moralizing epilogue, Don Giovanni reappears behind them. It is brilliant in its individual pieces, which include scenes set in imaginative locales, like a church through with the Commendatore’s coffin passes in procession. Mr. Mattei’s potent Don Giovanni not only dominates those around him but also towers over them physically. His seductively sung serenade brings a quick reward when Donna Elvira’s maid appears out of nowhere to embrace him. de Carsen, embora mais comedidos...&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:130%;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;«&lt;em&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.elpais.com/articulo/cultura/Don/Giovanni/publico/elpepucul/20111209elpepicul_5/Tes"&gt;El escritor Anthony Burgess publicó hace un cuarto de siglo en este periódico un artículo cuyo título no deja lugar a dudas: Todos somos Don Giovanni. De esa idea parte Robert Carsen para su propuesta en La Scala. El personaje que da título a la obra está en la sala y sube al escenario para comenzar una reflexión sobre las 1.000 caras del teatro y sus correspondencias con la vida, en un juego de espejos, telones, colores de las butacas y hasta diseños de los programas de mano, que provocan una relación dialéctica enriquecedora entre el espectador y lo que se está contando, intentándose que el público viva desde dentro la experiencia de la ópera en su teatro milanés. Hay cuadros plásticos de una gran capacidad de sugerencia conceptual y hasta intelectual. Por la sala deambulan en algunos momentos los personajes de Doña Anna, Doña Elvira, Leporello o Don Ottavio, e incluso el Comendador aparece, como convidado de piedra en el palco real -por casualidad entre el presidente Giorgio Napolitano y el primer ministro Mario Monti- para aceptar la invitación del libertino y poner orden a los excesos incómodos para las fuerzas de la razón. Es un golpe de humor esa asociación entre los personajes del teatro y la política, que sirve de respiro a una sucesión de hallazgos de continuidad narrativa o belleza conceptual. El trabajo de Carsen es sólido y solamente al final, con la muerte de Don Giovanni y el desenlace posterior, se le va de las manos. No es la de Carsen una reivindicación del espacio vacío a lo Brook, ni una defensa de la naturaleza a lo Guth, ni una apuesta social como la de Haneke, pero funciona la mayor parte del tiempo. No es poco.&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.elpais.com/articulo/cultura/Don/Giovanni/publico/elpepucul/20111209elpepicul_5/Tes"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:130%;"&gt;A Barenboim un espectador le censuró a gritos en el intermedio que los tempos eran "troppo lentos". Peliaguda cuestión. Especialmente, porque Barenboim mira con el rabillo del ojo a Furtwängler y siente al fondo el pensamiento de Kierkegaard sobre el seductor. En Salzburgo, cuando hizo Don Giovanni con Chéreau no extrañó a nadie esta aparente lentitud. Debe ser cuestión de sensibilidad latina o que los fantasmas de Muti aparecieron por momentos. La versión musical tuvo serenidad, rigor y densidad. No quiero decir que sea mejor o peor que otras. Es simplemente así. Se presentaba como de primera el elenco vocal. Ahí tengo más dudas. Excepto en el personaje de Leporello que, gracias a Bryn Terfel, estuvo sencillamente genial. Compuso muy bien Peter Mattei el personaje de Don Giovanni, fundamentalmente desde la perspectiva teatral. La supervalorada Anna Netrebko (Doña Anna) es superior en su capacidad expresiva y presencia escénica que en su matización lingüística. Barbara Frittoli se entregó al límite como Doña Elvira, pero se las vio y se las deseó en el aria Mi Tradí. Giuseppe Filianoti transmitió muy poca cosa de Don Ottavio y la pareja popular de Zerlina y Masetto, así como el Comendador, pasaron sin pena ni gloria. Robert Carsen y met certes sa patte, pétrie comme toujours d'intelligence sensible (la scène du bal avec ses dérèglements progressifs est l'une des plus réussies), émaillée de trouvailles poétiques - ainsi l'encerclement des personnages mangés par le noir. La baguette du nouveau directeur musical de la Scala (Barenboïm dirige en tant que tel pour la première fois depuis sa nomination en octobre) polit un son rond, une esthétique raffinée, distille des nuances dans l'alambic orchestral, mais cela sonne symphonique, pas théâtral.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;font-size:130%;"&gt;Sur le plateau, la meilleure distribution du moment. De permeio, &lt;em&gt;faz ainda uma perninha&lt;/em&gt; no musical, seja via Kurt Weill, Bernstein, ou Cole Porter! Se seguir as pisadas da grande Von Otter – &lt;em&gt;La Camaleónica&lt;/em&gt; –, ainda encerra a carreira a interpretar êxitos &lt;em&gt;pop&lt;/em&gt; dos &lt;em&gt;eighties&lt;/em&gt;…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Aos 47 anos, Kirchschlager encontra-se no auge da sua carreira. Domina os quesitos desta arte &lt;em&gt;buffa&lt;/em&gt;: mímica expressiva e rica, frenesim constante, sendo bastante convincente nos momentos mais poéticos, que convocam certo recolhimento (“&lt;em&gt;Mein Lippen&lt;/em&gt;…” e “&lt;em&gt;Im Chambre séparée&lt;/em&gt;”).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Saltita, de seguida, para a &lt;em&gt;Carmen&lt;/em&gt;, inundando-a de sensualidade e brilho!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nos duetos – “&lt;em&gt;Belle nuit&lt;/em&gt;” e “&lt;em&gt;A boy like that&lt;/em&gt;” – é magnificamente acompanhada (Patrycja Gabrel), acusando aqui e ali alguma fadiga, particularmente visível na respiração menos dominada.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Encerra com chave de ouro – Kurt Weill e Cole Porter -, oferecendo uma &lt;em&gt;September song&lt;/em&gt; terna e doce…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Quanto a Foster, recomenda-se mais contenção! A orquestra, maioritariamente em fortíssimo, abafou as vozes e o ritmo proposto enfermava de excessiva aceleração! poderia ter marcado a minha reconciliação com o &lt;a href="http://www.saocarlos.pt/"&gt;São Carlos&lt;/a&gt;, que deixei de frequentar na sequência do escândalo protagonizado pela dupla Pires de Lima / Vieira de Carvalho, que se consubstanciou na nomeação do incompetentíssimo Chrostopher Dammann para a direcção do teatro. Foram anos de ausência justificada.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pois bem, a verdade é que a dita reconciliação terá de sofrer mais um adiamento, posto que este &lt;em&gt;Don Carlo&lt;/em&gt; deixou muito a desejar…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A opção de apresentar a versão da ópera em quatro actos é absolutamente legítima, mas comporta problemas. Desde logo, o espectador menos familiarizado com a obra terá dificuldade em compreender a lógica da trama, dado que o acto de Fontainebleau se encontra ausente. Há muito anos, em conversa com a mítica Karita Mattila, percebi a que ponto a ausência em questão era comprometedora. Aliás, Mattila recusava liminarmente interpretar a versão mais curta da ópera, ela que foi a maior Elisabeth de Valois dos últimos vinte anos – vide &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.amazon.com/Verdi-Original-Version-Pappano-Chatelet/dp/B00008DDRK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1320066049&amp;amp;sr=8-2"&gt;Don Carlos&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt;, sob a direcção de Pappano.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Começou mal a coisa, pois.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A encenação de S. Langridge roça o desastre, sobretudo pela transposição da trama para a época presente, mal conseguida, incoerente e trôpega. O jogo de ténis é absolutamente imbecil e causou embaraço no coro, quase estatelando uma das intérpretes no chão, que tropeçou numa das dezenas de bolas espalhadas pelo palco; lamentável. A gaiola / prisão (onde decorre o acto do auto-da-fé) é uma solução desastrosa, dramaticamente, mergulhando a trama no ridículo; inaceitável. Depois, há uma exploração do universo &lt;em&gt;dark&lt;/em&gt;, que exaspera. Tudo é lúgubre…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Os cenários são foleiros, contando com detalhes pindéricos – a coroa sem cabeça, o túmulo do imperador, omnipresente, digno de um sem-abrigo, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A direcção de Martin André foi trágica. Pergunto-me se o senhor em questão conhece a voz humana? Sistematicamente, a orquestra – em &lt;em&gt;fortissimo&lt;/em&gt; – abafava os solistas, obrigados a berrar e esbracejar, para se fazerem ouvir. Entradas fora de tempo e desacertos, foi mato… Sem subtileza alguma, fomos bombardeados com uma sanfona ensurdecedora. Talvez André opte por mudar de vida! É que há feiras e circos ávidos de animadores musicais deste calibre…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;O coro esteve coeso e harmonisos, particularmente inspirado no auto-da-fé.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Os solistas salvaram a honra do convento, com reservas…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Enrico Iori compôs um Filippo equilibrado e digno, austero e sofrido &lt;em&gt;qb&lt;/em&gt;. Brilhou no &lt;em&gt;Ella giammai m’ammo&lt;/em&gt;, bem acompanhado pelo violoncelo lírico, apesar do enquadramento cénico deplorável: levanta-se da cama, onde se encontra uma cortesã (?), em cuecas (!!!), compõe a fralda da camisa… fiquemos por aqui.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don Carlo foi interpretado pelo jovial Giancarlo Mansalve. De um modo geral, cumpriu, abrilhantando a prestação com agudos ousados e afoitos. Embora a figura ajude, o jogo cénico torna a sua prestação pouco credível. Ladeou-o o Roderigo do grego Dimitri Platanias, também ele cumpridor e brioso, de voz lírica e melodiosa.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ayk Martirossian propôs um Grand Inquisitor convencional, de voz baça e volume limitado. A pouca credibilidade da caracterização foi reforçada pela cadeira de rodas imposta pela imbecil encenação…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A Princesa Eboli foi interpretada pelo meio-soprano Enkelejda Shkosa, actriz versátil e generosa. Começou muito mal – &lt;em&gt;Canzone del Velo&lt;/em&gt; -, com estridência e dificuldades na coloratura, terminando com um &lt;em&gt;O Don Fatale&lt;/em&gt; correcto e digno. A voz apresenta limitações evidentes e sinais de desgaste, mas enfim…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Termino com a grande decepção da récita, a Elisabeta de &lt;em&gt;La&lt;/em&gt; Matos.&lt;br /&gt;A voz de Elisabete Matos é – no momento presente – enorme, volumosa e robusta. Estará em casa no território &lt;em&gt;spinto&lt;/em&gt;, mas no lírico, a conversa é outra. Pagaria para não assistir a uma Amelia (Boccanegra) sua… Pago para não assistir a outra Elisabeta!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;O vibrato da intérprete – omnipresente – incomodou-me muitíssimo, comprometendo a composição do personagem. Elisabeta é uma mulher digníssima, nobre e imaculada. A voz quer-se límpida e graciosa. Matos apresenta-nos uma Elisabete nos antípodas da concepção verdiana, terminando com um &lt;em&gt;Tu che le vanità&lt;/em&gt; banalíssimo, sem ponta de elegância.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As boas-línguas disseram-me que a senhora se encontrava a recuperar de uma constipação. A mesma obra, juntamente com &lt;em&gt;Maria Stuarda&lt;/em&gt; (de 1835) e &lt;em&gt;Roberto Devereux&lt;/em&gt; (1837), forma a ilustre trilogia Tudor, uma das mais célebres da lírica.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Trata-se de uma ópera tipicamente &lt;em&gt;bel cantista&lt;/em&gt;, com longas frases, ricamente ornamentadas e elaboradas, que demandam intérpretes ágeis, resistentes e detentores de uma veia lírica apuradíssima. Dada a grande exigência desta peça – sobretudo no tocante ao papel titular -, apenas em inícios do século XX assistimos à sua ressurreição. Não será por mero acaso que o Met jamais estreou esta obra!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;De entre as mais distintas protagonistas de &lt;em&gt;Anna Bolena&lt;/em&gt;, destacam-se Maria Callas – que a interpretou numa extraordinária produção, no alla Scala (1957), a partir de uma encenação luxuosíssima de Visconti -, Leyla Gencer e Joan Sutherland. Beverly Sills distinguiu-se de igual modo neste papel, tendo cometido a proeza de interpretar os restantes papeis titulares das duas outras obras que compõem a trilogia Tudor. Os mais interessados leitores encontrarão a trilogia encabeçada por Sills à venda… nas lojas &lt;em&gt;on-line&lt;/em&gt;!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;O libreto de Felice Romani sugere uma protagonista profundamente narcísica, absolutamente centrada na defesa da sua honra e orgulho. Anna não ama Henrique, nem de perto, nem de longe. Aliás, não sei se terá, alguma vez, amado alguém… Henrique constitui um apêndice fálico, que abre à Jovem Bolena o acesso à glória e poder. Para &lt;em&gt;condimentar &lt;/em&gt;a protagonista, o libretista decide dotá-la de uma cena de loucura. As &lt;em&gt;mad scenes&lt;/em&gt; eram imperativas, à época – vide &lt;em&gt;I Puritani&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Lucia di Lammermoor&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Dinorah&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Hamlet&lt;/em&gt;, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;O labor do encenador McVicar – profundamente simbólico – assenta numa concepção hiper-realista, elegante e faustosa (embora aqui e ali frugal) da obra. Os cenários (Jones) são imensos e grandiosos, de uma austeridade assinalável. No guarda-roupa (Tiramani) o luxo e exuberância transcendem-se.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;McVicar joga, sobretudo, com as tonalidades, que definem estados de espírito e dimensões semi-ocultas dos personagens: cinza e preto traduzem o lúgubre e trágico; o leito real da rainha, escarlate, muito vivo, sugere uma Bolena algo pecaminosa…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No plano artístico e vocal, indubitavelmente, Anna Netrebko é magnânime, &lt;em&gt;regina assoluta&lt;/em&gt; da récita. Compõe uma Bolena altaneira, orgulhosa, aterrorizada pela humilhação e vergonha. A voz, apoteótica, encontra-se absolutamente dominada. Pontualmente, haverá quebras no volume, mas o protagonismo e disciplina arrebatam. Sem sinais de fadiga, olimpicamente, Netrebko enforma em &lt;em&gt;pathos&lt;/em&gt; as longas frases, iluminando as ornamentações assassinas da partitura.
