I’m guessing (I do a lot of that) that Perfume for most, is a very personal thing. Until we manage to get scratch and sniff laptops most of us won’t buy a new perfume on the back of a description. Most of us will have either have heard a friend discussing their faves or visited a shop and checked out a scent or two by way of a tester on a shelf somewhere.

My Good friend Harish, runs a chemist in Hackney east London and has set up a nice Perfume website called Perfumecare.co.uk. His shop is nice and his staff are helpful but it doesn’t quite translate on his website. But then, like my point earlier touched on, it is difficult to convey that personal touch online. Sure, you can allow people to choose colour and font styles and all that stuff but it’s hardly touchy feely now is it? Which sort of gets me to my conclusion that if you have such a website then the reality is that most people who visit your site are doing so on the back of a highly targeted keyword looking for the best price for a perfume product that they’re already familiar with, which long term is hardly a recipe for success, especially in these days of search engines and their so called quality evaluators.

I’m going to think of ways in which I can help Harish convey a more personalised touch, maybe he can put up a few photos or add a few articles, create a forum, a blog etc. Yet all that takes time and Harish is a busy enough man already. What do you think? What does his site say to you?

Duh, I missed the boat on this one!

I did plan on writing a post about gifts for valentines day and how perfume might have fitted in with all that, I was going to research the whole valentine gig and make it one of those informational type posts with lots of info and ideas on what to do, what to buy and all that stuff. But…yeah . I messed up and didn’t get around to it. See, I’ve been too busy with my day job really. My life has suddenley gotten busier, I’m spending time on trains commuting, at work for 10 hours a day, getting home, dealing with my kids, feeding them, getting them home and well, I just don’t seem to have as much time on my hands as I’d like. I think I need to find something nearer to home.

Still, getting back on topic I guess there’s no harm asking what others got up toso, what about you, did you get anything nice for Valentines day? What did you buy your loved one? What did they get you? Did you both go out somewhere nice, or did you have a nice night in together? Heck, maybe you are single even! Did you try and woo any honey’s? Or flutter those lids at a beau perhaps?

I won’t talk about my relationship status as it’s kind of complicated - what I can share is that I bought my daughter a £10 mobile phone credit and then called her to let her know about it. She was very pleased to say the least. It’s nice to be so easily pleased dont you think? We could all learn a lesson or two from our children.

I wondered in general what others around the world had done so decided to look at the blogosphere. The blogosphere is a great way of getting in touch with what others are doing worldwide, it’s surprising how similar we all are really.According to these guys some girl named Hayden went out for dinner with her little brother (awww). Dawn had a good time of it (double awww), Lauren and her BF did something nice (awwww) and some guy named Lorenzo was perhaps just hoping to get something nice!

Heh, seems New Yorkers were encouraged to ‘get some’. I’ll leave you to decide, of what exactly!

NEW YORK CITY – February 13, 2008 – Staying safe in New York City just got even sexier. The Health Department today unveiled a brand new look for the NYC Condom and launched a cutting-edge media campaign to encourage New Yorkers to “get some.” Tomorrow, street teams will meet commuters at busy crossroads around the city – including Union Square in Manhattan, the Atlantic Avenue station in Brooklyn, and 149th Street and Grand Concourse in the Bronx – to hand out the new NYC Condom for Valentine’s Day.

So Christmas day has come and gone, I’ve written about Burberry products before, this year my kids bought me a bottle of Burberry Touch (100ml). It’s nice, it has a subtle not in your face type of scent that hangs around for a while too. Not cheap mind, I happen to know that it cost £43-00 that’s around $80 to our American cousins.

I had a few minutes to kill so I thought I’d do a quick recce online to see if the online perfume retailers made any adjustments post xmas and was amazed to see the variance in prices. One online retailer was offering it at almost half the price that my kids paid in their local perfume store!

How can that be? Well it seems that the simple truth is that we shoppers on the high street are paying for the running costs of the high street retailer and paying through the nose for the priveldge. I am genuinely amazed that my kids could have bought my present for just half the price they paid.

Buy Burberry Touch Cologne by Burberrys, 3.3 oz Eau De Toilette Spray for Men

Have you had a similar experience? Do you usually buy your perfume or aftershave in the high st? Or are you a smart cookie who knows the benefits to be had from the off street world?

We all like to feel good about ourselves - Most of us, consciously or unconsciously take all manner of everyday steps to make this so.Who we choose to hang with, what we choose to wear, the way we style our hair, the actions we take to satisfy a need, a favourite food, a sexual stimulus, an affirmation of one form or another, courting compliments, perhaps getting a remark that we look or smell good, the knowledge of our financial security… and so on and so forth. The point being that they all contribute in one way or another to our state of inner contentment.

If you want my body and you think I’m sexy…

It’ll be of no surprise to readers of this piece that I’d like to focus on the ’smell good’ aspect of what I just said. If I may, I’d like to ask how you choose what perfume or aftershave you use? Are you inspired by TV adverts or movie trailers? Do you like the idea that you are wearing the same stuff that the beautiful or handsome model in the poster or sexy sensual ad wore, do you want to be like them, sexy desirable, wanted, is that the trigger for you?

Memories…like the corners of my mind

Or is it a case of you having received a perfume gift from a lover and then liking the associations that wearing it brings? Does the aroma, whilst intrinsically pleasant, have a further reaching, emotional pull that touches you elsewhere?

Don’t you, forget about me…

Conversely, do you have old perfumes you no longer wear for the associations they remind you off? Does the ending of a relationship propel you to choose anew, simply to escape from a memory of old?

A kiss is still a kiss, a smile is still a smile…

Or perhaps I’m looking too intently, perhaps its not as complicated and beneath the surface as any of that. Perhaps its a simple choice of point and sniff in some shop, or the look of a bottle or a price tag even.

I’d love to know, can you spare a second of your time to tell?

A London store launched an eau de toilette for pampered pooches on Monday that costs 38 pounds ($78.60) for a 50 ml glass bottle.

Upmarket pet shop Mungo & Maud hired perfumer Lyn Harris to create a fragrance exclusively for man’s best friend.

The result is “a gentle fragrance inspired by nature with notes of French blackcurrant, Tunisian neroli, mimosa and violet leaf on a base of sweet vanilla bourbon with a little almond”.

The shop’s creative director Nichola Sacher said she hoped the perfume, called Petite Amande, would “refresh the dog and appeal to the human nose”.

I’m all for a bit of deodoriser for animals and what not, but jesus, how ridiculous, what a statement this is! I won’t even go there on the whole social question of why we’d scent our pooches at a cost of nearly £40 quid a bottle, probably distressing them taboot! Lets get it right, dogs much prefer the smell of dog shit! I think the makers of this dog perfume stuff are missing out on a trick here, Sandy (my dads dog) would really go for some of that, “ooh she’d think, eau de dog poo, my favourite”

Christ, the worlds’ gone mad I tell you.

I think this will make an ideal present for a brother or a parent or a friend. It’s relatively affordable at just $25.95 (at time of writing this) and in comparison to similar type products from other brands is in some cases almost half the price. Take the Drakkar Noir Gift set below as an example currently selling for over $50 and you’ll appreciate what I mean.

Granted you get some small additions, but overall I think the Coolwater product is both more affordable and better VFM.

I know one thing for certain, my little brother wouldn’t bat an eyelid and would appreciate either.

Top tips for choosing a perfume gift for xmas

If you are anything like some of my friends, then you might be pretty rubbish at the whole gift buying thing, especially at xmas - like it or not xmas will soon be here and many of us will be faced with those yearly headaches of buying the right gift for those we love and care for.

Buy a bottle of perfume for her!

Perfume to me is one of those win win excellent choices - most women like perfume (at least I never met one who didn’t), yet when you look further it isn’t as easy as it seems, there’s just too much to choose from and we can end up buying something that’s either inappropriate, thought being just cheap and nasty or completley ill suited to the person. By taking a few pre-emptive steps you might be able to save yourself both time and money too.

So much to choose from

It’s amazing how many different brands of perfume there are out there.

Alfred Sung Perfume, Bulgari Perfume, Burberrys Perfume, Cacharel Perfume, Calvin Klein Perfume, Carolina Herrera, Christian Dior, Clinique Cologne, Coty Cologne, Dana Cologne, Davidoff Cologne, Dolce & Gabbana, Elizabeth Arden, Elizabeth Taylor, Escada, Estee Lauder, Giorgio Armani, Giorgio Beverly Hills, Givenchy, Gucci, Guerlain, Hugo Boss, Jennifer Lopez, Lancome, Liz Claiborne, Oscar De La Renta, Paris Hilton, Paul Sebastian, Perry Ellis, Ralph Lauren, Thierry Mugler, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent

Buying online can save you lots of money on high street prices, yet comes with a down side of you being unable to sample before you buy. It’s ok if you know the brand as you’ll already know if it’s a winner or a loser.

There’s no sniff test online

Buying a perfume online, especially a new or unknown scent can be a tricky affair. Take the description below for Beautiful by Estee lauder

Beautiful Estee Lauder

Women’s Gift Set - 2.5 oz EDP Spray + 2.5 oz Body Lotion + 3.4 oz Shower Gel + 0.27 oz Perfume Pen. Beautiful was created by Estee Lauder in 1985 and is recommended for daytime wear. This feminine scent possesses a blend of blooming fresh cut flowers rose jasmine and carnation. Accompanied by fruity notes of fresh citrus melons peaches and plums.

Descriptive, helpful even, but without a smell to sample it’s difficult to know exactly if you, or the person you would like to treat for Christmas will even like like it.So how do you choose the right perfume for you or your partner or friend or relative.

Choosing that perfect perfume gift for xmas

Visit high street perfumiers and retailers

Take notes - Just to state the obvious here, most high street stores have testers whereby you can spray some of the scent on your skin and smell it. Why not arm yourself with a notepad and pen and go out and sample a few. It might take you 20 minutes or so, but look on the bright side, you’ll get to smell a nice few aromas and will come away with a handy little reference point to use when you go online to make your purchase.

Check out online perfume forums see what others are saying

By visiting perfume retailers (see banners to the right) you’ll be able to read up on all the various opinions and views of people who have used or are familair with the product.

Bring it up in conversation

If you are subtle enough and are looking to buy her something new or just test the waters without being too obvious that you are thinking of buying her a perfume gift for xmas, then you could always bring the topic up in a conversation. You could try and say something dumb like “laugh a friend of mind was asking me of all people about what I thought would be a good perfume choice for his girlfriend. I know you like x, but do you happen to know of any scents that are new that are really nice that I could suggest..” She might reply with an “Oooh yes, so and so is just to die for, she might like that..”

Ask her friends

You could ask her friends too. Women are more likely to discuss girly stuff with their friends. They talk about new stuff, things they like, why they like them. A two minute phone call to her best mate or her mum might be all it takes to find out what you need.

If we remember that scent can be such a personal thing and what is good on some may not be so good on others then we’ll be on the right road to choosing the right xmas gift that will bring a huge smile to the face of our loved one or friend.

Happy xmas shopping!
