Enable the GPS on Your X301:

One of the big things that I nerded out over when purchasing my Thinkpad X301 was its integrated broadband modem (an Ericsson F3507G) and its bundled GPS sensor.

I know that Windows 7 was going to have built-in location sensors by default, and I was hoping to enable this. Sadly the drivers weren’t there for either of these devices.

Luckily, Jack (author of the link) has just found out that there are new drivers which both enable the modem as a native networking device, but also enable the GPS device as a native win7 location sensor!

Between this and the recently-featured-on-Lifehacker Geosense, I think I’ll be writing a little widget and an app or two using the win7 location platform. Super cool.

I’m typically not a huge fan of Java, but I’m also not a fan of much of the documentation that passes for “into to the meaning of REST” that exists online.

This is a super good article on web services, and if you’re a believer in building simple web services (which are stateless) this would be a great place to start, even if you don’t like Java.

I love Steep And Cheap, but a lot of the stuff they post isn’t interesting to me. I have a fondness for Arc’Teryx (mostly just the Made in Canada stuff) and am always curious to see when their products make it onto SteepAndCheap.

I created this Twitter account to basically notify the world whenever this happens. I used python-twitter and the entire script is 5 lines total (could’ve been 1, but, you know, Python and whitespace…).

Maybe this will help out some of you other gear whores/snobs out there. It certainly won’t help me at all, and will most likely end up coercing me into spending money on gear I don’t need!
