Why should you think about energy when buying a new or used car? In the long run, doing a little bit of shopping and research BEFORE you buy will save you both energy and money.

Most of us only think about how much we can afford when shopping for a car. But if the car we purchase is a gas-guzzler, it will soon be costing us a lot more each and every week.

Before heading out to the dealerships, take some time to do some comparison shopping. Pick up a copy of Consumer Reports or automobile magazines that compare the models. Read about various vehicle "families" and try to determine which size is best for your needs: do you need a subcompact, a compact, a sedan, a two-door?

Compare the mileage ratings for the various cars or trucks you're considering. All new cars have window stickers listing the latest U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's mileage ratings. These ratings are scientifically determined using state-of-the-art testing facilities that run the cars and trucks through simulated city street and freeway driving. The mileage you get on your vehicle, however, may differ from this rating, depending on your driving habits and the actual vehicle itself.

The EPA mileage rating is a good guide about how much the car will cost you to run. If, for example, you had to make a choice between a sport utility vehicle car rated at 20 miles per gallon and a car rated at 30 mpg, it would be wise to go with the more efficient car with better mileage.

If you traveled 12,000 miles per year at a cost of $2.50 a gallon of gasoline, the 20-mpg SUV will cost you $1,500 to operate. The 30-mpg car would cost $1,000, so you would save $500/year with the 30-mpg car. If you own the car for five years, you will have saved $2,500!

You may also want to consider a hybrid vehicle. While the initial cost may be higher, it will pay itself back in a few years by gasoline saved. Mother Earth News in its October/November 2005 issue provided this payback chart on hybrids versus other vehicles.

21 mpg = Average fuel economy of U.S. passenger vehicles. 46 mpg = Average fuel economy of the Accord, Civic, Escape, Insight and Prius hybrids. 55 mpg = Average fuel economy of Toyota Prius and Honda Insight.

Besides efficiency and mileage, also consider how much of a car do you really need. If you will never venture into the backwoods and ride on hilly, dirt roads; if you only use the car to drive to and from work on freeway...do you really need a sport utility vehicle? SUVs, because of their weight and horsepower, are some of the most inefficient vehicles on the market. They typically get only about 16-18 mpg or less around town and 20-24 mpg or less on the freeway.

A smaller car that gets excellent mileage may be what you need for that short daily commute. Most people don't need a super, ultra-fancy luxury car to go back and forth the 10 or 20 miles to their jobs. And if you do commute very long distances, mileage should be a prime consideration along with vehicle comfort and safety.

Another consideration before you buy a car should be how much of the vehicle can be recycled after it has out-lived its usefulness. Auto companies are now making vehicles that can be nearly 100 percent recycled: the plastics can be chopped up and reused, the light metal can be stripped off and reused, the steel can be melted down and re-forged. So rather than being thrown into a scrap yard to sit and rust, vehicles are disassembled, and the parts recycled back into raw materials.

Finally, when planning a new car purchase...consider an alternative fuel vehicle as your main commuting car. The majority of automobile trips are made by a single person who drives less than 25 miles a day. This is the perfect range for an electric or hybrid vehicle. If you own a company with a fleet of vehicles, you may want to consider compressed natural gas (CNG). The cost per mile of using CNG is typically lower than gasoline, and you can refuel them overnight while they are in your parking lot.

If you're thinking about buying a used vehicle, be sure to have the car carefully inspected by your mechanic to make sure it is running properly. A car that is improperly tuned or that has a bad engine or transmission will run poorly and use energy inefficiently.

Used vehicles have many more years of life in them, and driving them helps extend their total energy life cycle - the amount of energy needed to get the raw materials to build and deliver the vehicle to the consumer.

You may consider buying a used hybrid vehicle, but be aware that these cars may carry a premium because they are in relatively high demand.

Finally! Perodua has confirmed the release of the all New Perodua MPV this year November (may be first week). Perodua has never disappointed us with theirs new car like the most sellable and value for money car Perodua Myvi. This car was expected selling below RM65k and it gonna hit the new Proto Exora really bad. Perodua MPV will be expected to be mounted with 1.5L engine like what Toyota Vios and Toyota Avanza has. This new Perodua MPV is based on Toyota Passo Sette and has about 80% similarity of it outlook. Wowwww....now time to count down....

This may look like just another Hari Raya greeting from Perodua at first but for those who are follow the auto industry closely and are expecting something to be launched soon will immediately realise that this is in fact a hidden teaser for the new Perodua MPV!

The Perodua MPV will be based on the Toyota Passo Sette (also known as the Daihatsu Boon Luminas) and has been called the codename Perodua D46T for the development stage. Being engineered from an existing Toyota and Daihatsu model, the only surprise for us usually is the car’s refreshed and Perodua-ised exterior looks but even for that, we already have a rough idea of how it’ll look like thanks to teasers that Perodua have released – the exterior at SMIDEC and the interior at MSAM.

The interior teaser shown in April this year had a cream interior and this colour scheme has been repeated in this teaser image – the seats are done up in cream. There will be a small middle seat between the driver and front passenger but in this teaser image, it has been folded down to use as an armrest, and probably that’s how it should be used as most of the time as there probably won’t be any seatbelt for the front middle chair.

Second row shows all three occupants are buckled up – with the middle occupant wearing a lap belt. It doesn’t look like the third row occupants are wearing any seat belts (though there is most likely going to be seat belts equipped for the third row) and I personally don’t think the rear will be that wide – it must be some kind of optical trick.

Perodua’s head honcho Datuk Syed Hafiz has stated repeatedly to the mainstream media that the new Perodua D46T MPV is positioned mainly as a car with a large boot instead of an MPV (I believe the proper term for that is wagon). They won’t be trying to go head to head against the Exora or other MPVs, or at least that’s what they are saying now in the interviews that you see in the mainstream media every month.

This is quite different from the marketing strategy used by “cousin” UMW Toyota for their Avanza promos – the ads clearly show and promote the advantages of having 7 seats (remember the left behind print ads?). The third row is only meant to be used whenever needed – an admission to its extremely utilitarian looks as shown in the Japanese version photos. But of course marketing may say one thing but consumer purchase decision behaviour could go the other way – “it has seven seats so it must be an MPV?”

These interviews also unveiled a November 2009 launch date. Why so late and not in time for the balik kampung purchases you ask? It could be something to do with the impending NAP announcement – perhaps it is not safe to announce one set of prices and then have to change it a few months later?

An interview with Perodua managing director Datuk Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar in The Edge Weekly has revealed some plans about Perodua this year. For one, Perodua will be undergoing a rebranding sometime in the middle of the year, which will coincide with the launch of the new Perodua Kembara. The rebranding exercise will also give Perodua a new logo, which will be more of a restyled evolution of the current one rather than something new.

The new Perodua Kembara will come with a 1.5 liter engine (likely the 3SZ-VE) and will have four-wheel drive. It will not be assembled locally by Perodua but will be a CBU import from Japan. It will be a low volume product, and the expected price tag is likely to be more than the Toyota Rush because of its higher specs (the 4WD drivetrain) and Japan sourcing. It will be targetted at the urban, upper-middle income group. Expect the new Perodua Kembara to be based on the short wheel base Daihatsu Terios with a May 2008 launch date.

Another surprise revealed in the article is Perodua’s plans for 2009. Perodua will launch a new three row 6-seater MPV in November 2009. Datuk Hafiz likened it to a Toyota Wish, but a smaller version. I wonder what could this be based on. Can’t really think of any compact 6-seaters from Daihatsu/Toyota other than the Daihatsu Gran Max, but that’s more of a Rusa-like van.

If you read this article by Xinhua News Agency posted on the 5th of March 2008. it is revealed that Toyota and Daihatsu is developing a new MPV in Indonesia. The MPV is set to be launched in 2009. This model is could be the one that the new 2009 Perodua MPV will be based on.

Anyway whatever it is, it’s something to look forward to next year. 2009 seems to be the year of the MPVs.

It almost official in the news today, Perodua MPV soon will be launched in November 2009. We can expect they will be open for booking late September ( too late for your HARI RAYA ride :) ).
As we know Perodua MPV is launch only after a rebadge of Toyota (Passo Sette) and Daihatsu (Boon Luminas) have their own model market launch early this year.

It rumoured Perodua MPV will use Toyota powertrain 1.5 liter VVTI engine putting out 109 PS at 6,000rpm and 141Nm of torque at 4,400rpm , enough power and zippy to move around KL traffic.

Some reported this MPV measures could be from 1490mm to 4195mm long and despite it long wheelbase its edges located wheel make a compact turning radius.

As mentioned earlier by Perodua MD Datuk Syed Hafiz Perodua MPV will be sold around RM55,000 to RM65,000. Our sources indicates nearly 90% of the car is Malaysian made while the other 10% mostly security system and electronics are imported from Japan.
