Have you noticed in the news over the last year that the numbers of home burglaries and home invasions have dramatically increased? It’s true! If you haven’t been affected by a home burglary, you may know someone who has. It’s a tramatic experience!!

In the security plan for your home, it’s a good idea to take extra precautions to ensure all perimeter doors are impenetrable to a home intrusion and that also includes your sliding glass doors. This is a good idea even if you have a security system for your home.

The following security products are excellent for adding extra strength to your perimeter and interior doors. In my Home Invasion Prevention program, I discuss how these products can prevent a door from being kicked in due to the 20-gauge steel frame and wedging effect they offer. These products are reasonably priced and offer additional benefits and security to homeowners.

Dual Function Door Brace

The dual function door brace is a security bar made of rugged 20-gauge steel, is adjustable, and installs easily under the door knob to provide additional security for your doors. The door brace adjusts to most hinged doors and the cap on one end of the brace can be removed and used on sliding glass doors. With a clean baked enamel finish, homeowners will find the door brace attractive enough to use in their home.

Another recommendation for the Door Brace is in your home’s SAFE ROOM. This may be the master bedroom, a closet, or another room within your home that you and family members would retreat to in the event of a home invasion. If that happened, one of the first things to do would be to press an alarm emergency panic button (if you have a security system), lock the bedroom door, and put the door brace under the knob handle to prevent the door from being opened or kicked in. If you have no alarm system, quickly call 911.

The door brace will prevent the intruder from opening the door, giving the homeowner time to alert the police or grab their personal protection, e.g., pepper spray, TASER, stun gun, or a firearm.

Other ideal uses for the Door Brace would be when you travel, staying in hotels, college dormitories, added security for a son or daughter who lives alone, and much more.

The cost of the dual function Door Brace is $16.95 and can be purchased at The Personal Security Store @: www.thepersonalsecuritystore.com/homeprotection.

Door Stop Alarm

Most security products on the market today will only alert you after an intruder has entered. This device will not only activate an alarm but will prevent unwanted intruders from entering. If an intruder attempts to enter, the door stop alarm will sound a 125 db alarm and the unit will wedge underneath the door. The wedge-shaped design and non-skid pad on the bottom of the door alarm will hold the door tighter the harder it is pushed.

The door stop alarm is placed on the floor below the door knob with the low end of the unit under the door. If the door is opened it will strike the metal plate, preventing the door from being opened and the 125db alarm will activate.

The Door Stop Alarm is also equipped with a movement sensor which will activate the alarm if the unit is moved. A sensitivity switch allows you to adjust the amount of movement required to set off the door stop alarm.

The cost for the Door Stop Alarm is $15.00 and can be purchased at The Personal Security Store @: www.thepersonalsecuritystore.com/alarm.

Remember, protect your home and keep your family safe!!

The new year is finally here and luckily 2008 is in the rearview mirrow! Today we have been celebrating the first day of 2009. I hope this day has been a positive start and your outlook for the entire year is optimistic. This has been a day of being grateful and excited about the future. If there are some things we did not accomplish in 2008 - both business and personal, we now have a fresh start to make them happen in 2009.

For me that starts with setting yearly goals and a plan for my personal and business life. By looking at what I set the year before I can see what I accomplished and what I didn’t. Maybe the ones I didn’t aren’t really that important now. If that’s the case, I scratch it and move on. If I have a written set of goals, I am more likely to achieve them. If I have to try to remember my goals, forget it!!

What are your goals for 2009? Do you have personal and home security goals? Is one of your goals to provide better protection for your home making it a safer place for you and your family? Have you been considering a security system for your home - but have just been procrastinating? How about your personal security and safety? Having a plan of action to keep yourself safe whether at home, traveling, or wherever you are is an excellent goal to have. Carry some type of personal protection if you are a "woman at risk" - whether due to your job or your domestic life. Your personal security should be a high priority the same as your home security.

Now is the best time to set your goals and take action. By focusing on one goal at a time and being proactive, you can accomplish your 2009 goals. And what a great feeling you’ll have knowing you have taken care of protecting the things that matter the most - your family, your home, and YOU!

Good luck. May 2009 be the best year ever for you and your family!!!

Pepper Sprays are just one form of non-lethal personal protection that you can carry for self-defense. If you are in a high risk job where you meet with strangers, work a late night shift, are a college student, or just want to know you have a way to protect yourself if you are ever attacked, then carrying some type of protection like Pepper Spray may be a good choice.

When you read the daily newspaper or watch the nightly news, you see more and more personal and home robberies, people being attacked when walking alone - especially during the holiday season - and violent carjackings. All of these crimes are becoming more prevalent. What is a person to do to protect themselves? You cannot totally rely upon the police to be there to protect you or even rely on other people who may be nearby. The responsibility for protecting yourself is up to YOU!

If you are going to carry some type of defense spray like the Pepper Spray or Mace Spray, you need to do a couple of things:

Believe it or not the right to protect ourselves with non-lethal protection devices is not always a RIGHT in some states, counties, or jurisdictions. You will need to check with local law enforcement officials to find out what the laws are in your area. I know it sounds crazy that a law-abiding person wants to protect themselves with only non-lethal protection against a violent attacker who may possess a lethal weapon, but that is how the law is set up. (And you wonder who the law is designed to protect).

When you purchase your pepper spray, you will want to do a few practice drills to make sure you know how to spray the device and how NOT to accidentally spray yourself. You’ll receive information with your unit that discusses how to use the product, but it is very minor information. My recommendation would be to get a very informative 32-page booklet entitled "The Facts About Defense Sprays And How To Use Them…" This booklet will give you precise information about how to use the device and if attacked - dropping an attacker to his knees. You can get this booklet and all types of personal protection at www.thepersonalsecuritystore.com.

The Tri-Pack Pepper Spray is an excellent package because it allows you to carry one of the spray units on your keychain. As you are walking to your car with keychain in hand, you are prepared. Always be alert and aware of your surroundings. Because this is the holiday season, we have a tendency is to be preoccupied on things other than our personal safety. For example, as you are leaving the mall with a bundle of Christmas packages trying to find your car in the parking lot, take a moment to look around and make sure no one is following you or that there aren’t strangers hanging around your car. Have your pepper spray in hand along with your keys and know what to do if attacked.

The second spray unit in the package is for your car. You can leave it in the glove compartment or wherever you can easily get to it if attacked while in your car. Before you get into your car again look around to see if there are any strangers nearby and then quickly get inside and lock the doors.

If you have someone carjack your vehicle, evaluate the situation. Does he have a weapon? How has he forced his way into your vehicle - your side or the passenger side? You will need to determine the best way to escape this situation. If he carjacker is unarmed and you are going to use the pepper spray for protection, remember in close quarters when you spray the unit at his face, you may get some of the spray as well. It is a good idea to formulate and have a plan ready in your mind if this type of scenario happens. For me, I would probably take my chances with some spray in an attempt to escape; however, each one of us has to make that decision should it happen to us.

The third spray unit is for your home or wherever you want to keep it. More and more burglaries and home invasions are happening while people are home. If you open your door to a stranger - not thinking properly - and they try to force their way into your home, your only protection may be the pepper spray sitting in the basket near the door. Grab it and spray the perpetrator in the face. If you have your cell phone or portable phone with you, quickly call 911 for help. If you have an alarm system with a keypad near your door, quickly press the panic button to set off the alarm. Most alarm companies dispatch the police immediately on a panic alarm. A loud alarm going off would most likely cause the intruder to quickly leave. However, it could also enrage him so be prepared in this scenario situation as well.

Remember, carry your protection spray with you if it is legal within your city/county/state and practice using it. Having some type of personal protection device will give you a little more confidence and peace of mind that you can protect and defend yourself if attacked.

I also recommend women take a self-defense class to become mentally and physically educated. You will learn techniques and tactics on the best ways to protect and defend yourself against criminal attacks.

Remember, review in your mind various scenarios of personal assaults or attacks so you will be prepared to react should it happen to you! Most importantly - Refuse to be a victim of crime no matter where you are!!

This article was written back in April 2008 but I thought it was worth bringing back for the holiday shopping season. With all the excitement and holiday festivities it is easy to become unconscious to what is going on around us. The criminal perpetrator is looking for that one person who is not paying attention to either steal their purse or wallet, rip off their holiday packages, or violently attack them. Staying alert and aware this holiday season will help you maintain your overall safety - whether shopping, at home, or wherever you are.

Have you noticed how unconscious some people are (especially women - and young women) when they leave the shopping mall or even the grocery store? This holiday season - like none other - we should be especially observant and aware of all the people we come into contact with - especially at the malls, shopping center, and the parking lot areas with our holiday packages in hand.

Here are some quick safety tips for staying aware, alert, and safe when leaving the shopping mall and making your way out into the big parking lot areas where criminal types can hangout and just wait for their victims. I have highlighted in red additional information that a friend reader, Larry Kaminer, passed on to me. Thanks Larry. Please pass this information on to other women.

7-Safety Tips To Know When Leaving The Shopping Mall

1. Ladies don’t be talking away on your cell phone not paying attention to what’s around you. If you have your cell phone, ipod or mp3 player hooked to your head, you’re not really paying attention to what’s going on around you. And that really is important, especially if you are going to your car way in the middle of the parking area by yourself. This is exactly the type of person the predator is looking to attack. Be fully aware and totally alert as you walk to your car.

2. Have your keys in your hand and ready as you walk to the car. Be prepared to use your keys as a weapon if you are assaulted or attacked. A great secondary weapon would be to carry pepper spray in your hand slightly concealed. You should definitely know how to use the pepper spray. Don’t wait until the last minute to learn how to use it. The last thing you want to do is spray yourself. Prior practice is highly recommended. Also as you are approaching your car take a look UNDER your vehicle when you are still about 40 feet away. Carry a flashlight at night (or a personal alarm with a flashlight) and use it to briefly illuminate the underside of the car upon approaching. If there is someone underneath the car, he might not have the strength of hold onto your leg or ankle from such an awkward position. However, if he slices one of your achilles tendons before you realize he is there…now you can’t walk.

3. If you have a newer car, you can probably unlock your car from quite a distance away. Wait until you are fairly close to your car before unlocking the door and then only unlock your side. If you press the button more than once it may unlock all doors. You don’t want a criminal following you or hiding on the other side of your car jumping in. Double check in the back seat to make sure no one is there. Once inside your car, immediately lock all doors.

4. Before getting into your car (especially at night), check to make sure there is not someone hiding inside. Get a personal alarm with a flashlight built in so you can easily check your car at night. Some people are not in the habit of locking their car doors – they should get into the habit – and it makes it easier for the predator to get inside your car and be waiting to attack whomever owns the car. Always lock your car doors when getting in or getting out.

5. Don’t leave your valuables unattended. This is a great time for the criminal to rip off your packages or your purse. If you’re trying to get a baby strapped into the seat, look around to see who is nearby. If it looks okay, get your child strapped in and then put your valuables in the backseat or trunk. Always be looking around and monitoring the situation. You don’t want somebody seeing you bend all the way into the trunk or backseat putting in your bags and actually push you into the car. This happens because these creeps are opportunistic!

6. If you’re going to be shopping for awhile be sure to wear comfortable shoes…and that’s not high heels. If you are attacked as you head to your car, you may not be able to get away quickly if you have on 3” high heels. Nix the heels for some comfortable shows. Think safety first.

7. And lastly, avoid parking near large vehicles or shrubbery or up close to a building – especially if you are by yourself. If you are walking out to your car alone late at night to an unlit area covered with shrubs, you may become a target for some predator looking for an easy prey. If you can’t find a parking spot and have to park there, come back before it gets too dark and move the car closer to the entrance. Or you could have the mall security walk you to your car. When returning to your vehicle, be leery of large vans or utility type vans with sliding doors parked right next - almost too close - to your drivers side of your car. If your gut tells you this doesn’t feel right, go back into the mall and have security escort you out to your car. If you decide to get in without security, do so from the passenger side but make sure you lock doors immediately upon entering and exit the parking lot right away.

There you have it - simple little Safety Tips for holiday mall shopping that can keep you safe…and alive!!

Always Remember..Stay Aware..Stay Alert..Stay Alive!!

Holiday Shopping Season officially begins on Friday, 11-28-08 and is known as BLACK FRIDAY. That name alone should cause you to be a little more cautious as you make your way to the mall or favorite shopping area. Although most people are heading to the mall with the thought of being thankful for what they have and the ability to buy gifts for those they love, there are criminals lurking in and around the mall aiming to take what you have.

Here are a few Holiday Shopping Safety Awareness Tips to keep in mind as you do your shopping and enjoy the holiday festivities over the next twenty-eight days until Christmas. Keep your personal safety and security a priority whether you are at home, shopping, or traveling.

Stay Aware Of Your Surroundings At The Malls, Stores & Shopping Centers

Be sure when you leave your vehicle that you lock your doors and keep windows closed. If you have an alarm on your vehicle, use it.

Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Don’t advertise large rolls of money in public. You don’t know who may be watching.

If using an ATM at the mall, be especially vigilant and aware who may be around you. Try not to make large cash withdrawals. Remember the malls may be extremely crowded and this would be an excellent time for a criminal to catch you off-guard and grab your cash.

Shop during the daylight hours whenever you can. If shopping at night, try to go with another person. If shopping alone and leaving the mall late at night, ask a security officer to accompany you to your car.

Always choose a bank with an ATM located in a highly visible, well-lit area. If you notice anyone suspicious approaching, cancel your transaction and leave.

Avoid using ATM’s where you must go inside the ATM area unless you are with others. This leaves you highly vulnerable to a criminal attack. Use the drive-up ATM whenever possible.

Don’t leave valuable items inside your car that are visible to others. Place packages in the trunk of your car.

Avoid carrying too many packages that may make you a target. Make regular trips to your car to drop off packages.

Keep your purse tucked close to your body at all times. Don’t let it dangle from your shoulder as this may be a perfect setup for a purse-snatcher.

For men – carry wallets in front pocket rather than back pocket or jacket. Thieves are looking for easy targets as they move through the crowded malls.

Park only in well-lit parking areas and as close to a mall or store entrance as you can. Don’t settle for an isolated parking spot just because you’re in a hurry. Hold out for a safe spot to open up.

As you walk through parking lots, make sure you are aware of your surroundings and walk with authority. Don’t look like a victim.

Don’t be talking on your cell phone as you leave the mall walking to your car. You need to pay close attention to your surroundings and anyone who looks suspicious.

Approach your car with car keys in hand and survey the exterior and interior of your vehicle before entering. Place your packages in the trunk all the while aware of anyone who may be nearby or approaching you.

Don’t get into your car if you are being followed or are suspicious of anyone standing near your car. If so, return to the mall or store or where there are other people. Ask for store security assistance.

Beware alert and aware of strangers who may be approaching you for whatever reason. At this time of year there are “scammers” trying various methods to distract you with the intention of taking your money and belongings.

Carry some type of personal protection device like a Taser C2, Pepper Spray, Mace, or a Stun Gun. Your safety and those of your family members should be a priority. If a criminal attacks you for your purse or packages, give him your belongings. Your life is more important! If he tries to hurt you or a loved one, use your personal protection to protect yourself and those with you.

The news media is bringing us pretty grim stories almost daily about the violent home invasions that are happening all across our country. I have been collecting these stories since our company is hosting a Security Lunch & Learn Series entitled "7-Steps To Proactively Protect Yourself Against A Home Invasion." As I review this information one thing seems to stand out the most — and that is people have become complacent about their overall security and probably need to review simple common sense procedures that will ensure they don’t become a home invasion victim. When a perpetrator can bust right through your front door — you have not done the best job of securing your home and keeping your family safe.

Homeowners need to be better educated in the best options available to protect their home. Just having a home security system is not going to give you the most complete protection…you need more. By the time someone has kicked in your front door at 3:00 a.m., it may be virtually impossible for you or your alarm company to respond before the perpetrators have violently attacked you and your family. In our program we discuss how to strategically design your home protection so you are in control and not the perpetrators.

By being proactive in your security protection you are less likely to become a victim of a home invasion or home burglary crime…..and you will know well ahead of time if and when you have "unwanted visitors" on your property. Then you have the ability to react and respond accordingly.

As a law-abiding citizen, if the Government took your gun(s) away, the only ones who would still have guns are the violent criminals. And the last thing we need is to let these criminals take charge.

Criminals will always have some kind of lethal firearm/weapon to do their dirty criminal deeds with. Everyday citizens needs to be able to protect themselves, their family, and their homes.

Protect your home and family by having an impenetrable home perimeter and security system, keep non-lethal personal protection like Taser C2, Stun Guns, Pepper Spray, or Mace in your home, in your purse, in your car, on your keychain, and maintain a strong self-defense attitude and awareness. If circumstances warrant and you must have a firearm for protection - be sure to get thoroughly trained and be prepared to use it if attacked by some low-life punk as seen in this video.

Home Sweet Home - Or Is It? Ladies (and men), be alert and learn how to protect and defend yourself, your home, and your family. In our current economic condition, burglary and home invasion crimes are one the rise. Don’t become a victim of this senseless crime…install a home security system for your best protection!!

If you are a woman who lives alone, whether you are young or old, consider your security and safety as a top priority. There are too many predators who will take advantage of young women thinking they are easy prey. That’s not to say that older women aren’t attacked by predators - it may be that older women view life differently and are more aware of things that younger women blow off as not being that important or urgent. And that is your personal security and safety.

The first step to your protection is knowing you may be vulnerable to some kind of criminal attack. Your goal is to do whatever it takes to reduce that vulnerability and avoid becoming a victim of a home invasion or burglary crime.

Here Are 7-Steps To Proactively Protect Yourself Against A Home Invasion:

1. Install a quality security system in your home and include a panic button. Keep the panic button or a second keypad in your bedroom. Make sure all entry doors to your home are protected, windows that are especially vulnerable, and combine with interior motion detectors. Your alarm rep can make recommendations on the best protection. And always consider fire protection too. (As a security consultant for 20 years, I know how valuable fire protection is).

2. Make sure you have strong locks and updated deadbolts on your doors (with extra long bolts) and that the windows also have strong locks. You can add some extra strength to your windows by placing dowel rods into the track of the windows. Make sure you keep your doors and windows locked even while at home.

3. Your perimeter doors should be solid core doors with reinforced frames. Weak doorframes with high quality deadbolt locks can be kicked in with the frames giving way, but the door with the strong deadbolt is still intact.

4. Look at putting a door guard at the front and back doors to your home that open in. This again will add some extra strength to your doors. If someone is going to intrude upon your home, make them have to work hard at getting in. Most burglars don’t want to have to exert a lot of effort breaking into homes. If you have built a strong and hardened perimeter, chances are the intruder will give up and go away. HARDEN THE PERIMETER OF YOUR HOME.

5. Because the master bedroom is definately where the intruder is going (at least at some point), have a good quality lock on that door as well. Consider changing your door to a solid core door with reinforced frames. You may want to have your master bedroom become your "Safe Room" as you wait for the police to arrive.

6. Have a Safety Plan of Action on specifics you will do to maintain your safety and any family members’ safety. The plan should include your taking a self-defense class to learn techniques and tactics to defend and protect yourself and carrying some kind of personal protection products like pepper spray, mace spray, Taser C2, Stun Gun or Pepper Gun that can be used to fend off an intruder. These are all non-lethal devices only meant to throw off an attacker giving you a chance to escape to safety and call the police. Many women who have been stalked or previously attacked are resorting to firearms for personal protection. Lethal or non-lethal - make sure you follow the legal requirements and that you are properly trained in how to use the device.

7. Develop a safety and security awareness about things around you, the people around you, and any gut feelings about social situations you may be in. You will want to develop a more heightened sense of security and common sense about situations you may have ignored before. My daughter told me I am too paranoid about personal security and safety. I tell her it’s not being paranoid, it’s been realistic and using common sense about safety, being aware of what is going on and knowing how to protect yourself so you don’t become a victim of crime.

For women who have experienced an assault, a violent attack, or a rape, their whole outlook on life has totally changed forever. Please consider the above recommendations and make sure you place your security and safety high on your priority list.

Again, put a security system in your home! Check this link on how to get a high quality, affordable security system monitored 24-hours a day by the world’s #1 alarm company - ADT Security.
