When I met my friends they asked me how’s the life in Australia. Hmm, not as colourful as expected, and perhaps a little bit disappointing.

True, even with its stable economy and security, I can’t help but cringe at the sight of uneducated, savagely bogans looming on the street at night, shouting and swearing like animals finding for partners during mating season.

And it’s just the difference. The barrier. The feeling that you don’t belong there. The feeling of strangeness.

Don’t get me wrong, because most of the people there are very nice, helpful and friendly. On the second day after reaching Hobart, I met a very helpful guy who helped me to move my big mattress from the city to my house with his pickup truck. When walking on the street, more often than not you’ll see people smiling towards you. The people there say ‘please’, and ‘thank you’. And their driving manners. And courtesy. And much more.

Back to Malaysia, my home.

Everything seems so familiar here just like it's part of you. The weather feels familiar: hot and moist. The road feels familiar: busy and sometimes dirty. The people here feels one of yourself. Heck, even the longkang feels familiar.

There are some things that need to be lost to learn its preciousness. It has never dawned on me that the life here (in Malaysia) is what I really want. It’s the day that I set my foot out of this country that I realise this. Why, for everything here is so good, that I chose to study abroad at a town 4255 miles away?

2nd Semester

Quadriceps femoris, semitendinosus, biceps femoris, adductor longus, tibialis anterior, fibularis brevis, flexor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum brevis, flexor digiti minimi, quadratus plantae, dorsal interossus, popliteal artery, great saphenous vein, sciatic nerve, deep fibular nerve…

Yeah, semestre de anatomie. We also study physiology which is quite fun at the moment, we learnt things like the molecular basis of muscle contraction, development and maturation of the nervous system etc. Quite fun! And oh, besides biology and chemistry, med students also learn physics, maths and law! How awesome/awful is that.

Anyway the new pathology stuffs are killing me. Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, gout, bla bla bla, darn I have no idea. We have like 5 assignments waiting for us, and mid sem exam is coming soon too… Scheisse.

Chasing the Sun

I raced up the hill, towards the pearl-white lighthouse. The sun was eclipsed by a mass of cloud just above the distant hill.

And I reached the lighthouse. I won. The sun was still above the horizon.

Touch Down

Here I am, at Melbourne.

Everything went on pretty smooth. I received the electronic boarding pass from Jetstar in the morning (barely 3 hours before departure time, what efficiency!), took the 10 bucks bus (which arrived a tiny bit late) to the airport (thanks Nancy), and watched half of “L change the world” in the airport while waiting for the delayed flight.

The scenery during the flight was amazing. I looked out of the window and saw a widespread area of altocumulus just beneath the airplane slowly unravelling a lower layer of thin, veil-like altostratus. For a moment the sea of altocumulus looked like the great ocean, another moment the whole scene looked as if the land is a reflection- the puffy altocumulus turned into soil, while the paper thin layer of altostratus, now undulating, looked like a pond of water. The calm water, area which I can see the land beneath, looked like the reflection of world built upside-down on the ceiling of the sky. The cloud performance was so captivating, majestic, and almost magical.

After an hour or so, I was above Melbourne. I peeked through the window and saw the metropolitan city spawning across an immeasurable area of land, with many high rises concentrated at its CBD. Much like a normal graph, I thought.

The first thing I did after touching down is go to China Town and have some authentic Malaysian curry chicken nasi lemak. Well, not exactly authentic, but I’m not that picky to distinct between the basically same taste. Still, not enough spice! Where’s that tongue-burning sensation from Malaysia that I remember? More chilli in the sambal please.

After eating I went and walked around the city. I’m staying in a hotel right at the heart of the city and it’s really convenient. As I walked along I have this elated feeling about Melbourne. Melbourne is actually a city (unlike Hobart where city= town). Just observe: the shops, the people, the streets, the sound, the liveliness, the atmosphere… Isn’t this a city boy’s dream? I say, yes.

But still, the fact that I am stuck at Hobart for 60 months is still, the fact.

After Exams

Drink the beers and hear the cheers! I’m so prepared for an awesome holiday lying in front of me. I’ve had quite a bit of fun in the past few days after exams with my friends here in Hobart, and now I’m preparing to catch my flight to Melbourne and meet up with my college friends. My parents will come Australia 2 days later and we’ll revisit the great ocean road and twelve apostles. Awesome much aye!

P.S: I don’t drink. That’s the first step to become a medical professional.

No choice lah, need to do a bit of notes or else I phail wei.

So yeah, exam is just around the corner. You can imagine me studying hardcore for 12 hours a day but to be frank the truth is pretty much the opposite. Slack, slack, slack… yeah, this is not good, I know. Well, theme 1 is pretty much a pass, but my primary school teacher taught me to aim high, so, hmm, HD? Impossible, lol.

Few days ago, when I was “studying”, I suddenly thought of someone. The special someone. Darn, I thought, why at this time, before exams? And it’s pretty pointless for me to think of her, since we’re like 4255 miles away from each other. But then, I really want to know how’s she now. I want to… talk to her, though I know it’d be awkward to the highest possible degree. So much that I’ve changed since we last talked to each other, I wonder if she’s still the same person…

P.S: Did I just hear someone making food using the microwave at THIS CRAZY HOUR (3:25am)?? Holy scheiße!!

One Month to Holidays

Ice Skating: The Sequel

Again! In 2 weeks’ time!

So we few guys went to Glenorchy again, for ice skating. This time however, Minyoung and Russell replaced Frank and Kenneth’s places.

We met at Franklin Square around 12:00 noon as usual. Boss, Dexter, Jason, Josh, Minyoung and I arrived first, and we had lunch (fish & chips) at Flippers. The fish was nice, but the chips were tasteless. We walked back to Franklin Square and waited for the remainders. Michael soon arrived, followed by:

The Curse of Black and White

I’m bewitched by black and white photography --especially black and white FILM/PHILM, that’s why I’m trying hard to mimic the look of it on my D90.

But, alas! After a few months of filmlessness, I bought an old Nikon F3 film MANual focus SLR camera from ebay. Damn it’s really cheap. Finally I can shoot film again! I’m overjoyed. The first film that I loaded into the classic SLR was a Kodak Tri-X black and white film. Black and white FILM mate! Just imagine how awesome it is. After finishing the roll of film I got it developed for about 13 bucks and voila! Here are the results:

Ok that’s like my dream maybe. I shall save it till I get a real F3.. Anyway back to reality (digital):

This is my first serious attempt of shooting in Black and White. Instead of following the common method of shooting in colour and converting the photos into greyscale when post-processing (so that the photographer can have fine control of every single colour channel), I used in-camera Black and White mode (in JPEG of course, as usual): sharpening +9 (maximum, to make it grainy with high ISO), contrast +3 (maximum), and yellow-filter effect (the most important thing). I’m making the photos film-ish, mate. The yellow-filter is important as many black and white film shooters use a yellow warming filter all the time (because black and white films are less sensitive to warm colours).

Proof that I don’t own an F3.

I realized that shooting in-camera black and white mode can help me to visualize things in greyscale better because as I shoot along, all the images were recorded and displayed on my camera’s rear LCD as black and white- thus I get instant feedbacks on how my images look like in black and white, and from there, I learn to visualize how would a scene look like in greyscale, and shoot accordingly.

Another thing about black and white photography is that it is generally contrasty and therefore suitable to shoot in all kinds of weather conditions- like dark, moody days, which colour shooters will whine about the bad weather (like how I used to). Besides, since colour is absent, it means that there are less distractions in the photographs. But, as the photographer can’t make use of colours to isolate a subject from its surroundings, thus he can only make use of shapes, contrast, bokeh, or other techniques to achieve the goal.

P.S: Hmm don’t you think that something is missing from the photos? Yes… GRAINS. Grains are pleasing, my friend.

Korean Lunch

It’s (was) Easter!

So as the title suggests, we had an awesome Korean lunch at a university hostel (John Fisher’s) where few of my friends are staying at. We met up at around 11am at Woolworths and bought some cooking ingredients for the lunch. After that we walked all the way up to John Fisher’s college and started cooking the fantastic food.

Ice Skating

So two weeks ago, me and my uni friends went ice-skating at Glenorchy, a suburb 15 minutes’ bus ride away from Hobart. It was pretty darn fun! I fell like, 4 times as it was my first time skating. Damn, one of my epic falls was even recorded and posted on facebook already. Gah. Anyway, here are the photos. I didn’t get to take pictures of us ice-skating as I was having fun myself. Haha.

So we met up at Franklin Square at around 12 o’clock and had Japanese lunch.

Amigos!

Having a bunch of friends at uni isn’t only stress-releasing (given the amount of information we receive everyday), it’s also fun and comforting. Like, hey, I’ve already met a few kakis to play table tennis, and a also few photography aficionados like me. Just 8 days ago few of us went for ice-skating at Glenorchy. It was pretty darn fun! There’s even a hilarious (and embarrassing) video of us on facebook already.

One Month

Still surviving.

It’s hard to believe that I’ve left my home for one month already.

Life here is.. so far so good. Nothing impressive though.

Medicine course is quite interesting, but always get bombarded with lots of information.

Many days with 9-5 lectures, and the lectures are often information-overloading. Have serious need to expand brain capacity.

Really need to have a good study plan. The people here in my course are scary. They all have that ‘HD-student diligence’, unlike me.

Hobart Sight-Seeing

Alright, here it is- another pictorial update of my environment.

On the Saturday two weeks ago, I went to Salamanca Market which is a famous tourist attraction of Hobart. It’s only 10-15 minutes’ walk away from my apartment, which is pretty near.

I really enjoy the place- it’s atmosphere, liveliness, music, sound, people.. et cetera. There are stalls selling many kinds of things ranging from barbecue sausages to framed historical photographs. There is even a photographer selling his works there- Wolfgang Glowacki.

Beside Salamanca place sits one of the finest park I’ve ever seen- St. Davey’s Park. It’s a really peaceful, beautiful place to have a picnic (I’m quite obsessed with picnicking, somehow). Damn, my photos just can’t do it justice. I’ll go to the park again tomorrow morning if the weather allows me, to take more photos of the serene place.

So yeah, enjoy the photos!

First Week

I figured that it’d be good to post about my experience on the first week of lectures here.. so, yeah. How’s uni like? Well, for one thing, quite different from college. My timetable changes every single week, and my lecturers changes as such. Medical school is in the ~~city~~ town, which is about 45 minutes’ walking distance from main campus.

As you can see, we medical students are pretty isolated from the rest of the group. The main campus is a beautiful place to go, quite different from the Medical school which is part of a research institute and also part of the Royal Hobart Hospital. What’s more, the town gets really really dead by 5:30 p.m, which is really lifeless. Although there’s not so many people in campus than in town, but it’s precisely the equanimity of the library that’s pleasing. Town doesn’t have that air of calmness- all it has is the atmosphere of quietness and dreadfulness.

I had my (boring) orientation session last week. Met some new friends, although not many. Then, had a three-day medical course orientation which was also pretty boring. Took the Mantoux test on Friday, which basically involves injecting a standard dose of 5 Tuberculin units (0.1 ml) intradermally and reading it 2, 3 days later.

On Friday night, we were invited to join a “Chinese New Year Party” organized by the Overseas Christian Fellowship. It was quite fun, and we met a lot of new friends, including senior medical students, and also friends from other courses. We had “Lou Sang” but everyone was lou-ing outwards but not upwards. And thus all the salmon flakes, peanuts, etc. dropped on the table and floor, which is quite wasteful. I met Daniel who uses the same camera as mine, with my dream lens Tokina 11-16 2.8. Too bad I did not bring my camera that day.

On Saturday morning, I went to Salamanca market. It’s such a nice place! The people, the stalls, the music, the scenery, the atmosphere.. I took lots of photos (will be up soon). On Saturday afternoon, we had a barbecue lunch to finish up the left foods. Met more friends (most of them Malaysian) and had fun too.

On Monday, my lecture officially started. Well, there were only two hours of lecture on that day which was pretty relaxing, but things are not so merry after that. I got many 9-5 lectures for the past few days, and some case learning, etc.

To sum it up, well, first week is pretty simple and we learn some basic stuffs. Just warming us up I would say. The histology practical class was fun though, got to play with microscope and those slides. You know, I’m interested in optics and things alike. That’s why.

Alright. I’ll be going to a tour tomorrow, and a first-aid training course on Sunday. Nice. Should be ice-skating next week too. So, yeah.

A Walk to My University Library

February 16th, 2010. Tuesday.

Day 2 of orientation.

Early in the morning, I woke up at 8:15 and prepared myself for the day.

Around 9:15, I stepped out of my accommodation and headed towards the university library which is 15 minutes’ walk away. It was a pleasant morning: the sky was blue and peaceful, and the sun was warm and strong. I breathed of fresh air.

I’m A Survivor

Yes, I’m still surviving!

.I don’t know how to describe my feelings now. Leaving Malaysia is so much harder than I thought.

.Yesterday in the airport I was holding back my tears. My friend Chin Ken had already broken down. I held through the hugs, “bye-byes” and all, but the moment I realize that this may be the last time I can see them, my dearest parents in many many months, tears flooded my eyes

.immediately. I couldn’t stand it anymore. I cried when I saw the last sight of them in the airport. How do I wish to shout “I love you” loudly to them. On the plane, I called them, and I cried again. I called my dear, and tears streamed down my face.

.The homesickness is really killing me. I’m already in tears again. I miss home. I miss my parents. I miss them so much that whenever I hear their voice through phone I’d weep. Even the mere thought of them would affect me. I feel so guilty and I really hate myself. Guilty that I

.did not fulfill my responsibility as a son at all. I hate myself for doing so little in return of the great love my parents have shown me. I really really hate myself. I feel so sorry whenever I hear their voice through the phone, caring for me. I love them, I really love them.

.Well urgh, I want to share a lot of things. But not here. Alright, this is a rare post, without even a single picture. Stay tuned for my next pictorial update. ;)

Alright. Although my appetite has been really low for the past few days (I only ate breads/ biscuits + 1 meal of subway and McD), but I’m glad to announce that my small but powerful stomach is back. Heh.

Okay, so early in the morning I went for orientation. The speech/introduction session was pretty boring, I actually yawned through it. Then, the expo + lunch session. Phew, finally, something to eat! And right, once I enter the hall where the expo was held, I saw the booth of Malaysian Students Society. So me and my friend Kenny immediately joined the club. We were the first two people to register actually.

We walked around and then queued up for our meal. Two pieces of bread plus a piece of minced beef/sausage. Barbequed. Quite nice actually, just that the drink is VERY diluted. It’s not even sweet! Well, we met a few Malaysian students there, two guys from Johor (one of them studying medicine and another one studying law), and another girl around KL. I was also introduced to a Singaporean student who’s also going to study medicine.

Around 1:30 pm we went to Commonwealth Bank to create and account and bank in our money. It’s such a relief, you know, to have our money banked in safely instead of bringing around everyday while worrying for it.
