“I have always been creative all of my life, from designing clothes to various arts  and sculpting. But it wasn’t until I had my children and  moved back to the country that I went all in to develop my art practice” said Jayne. 

“Living in remote bushlands gave me an appreciation for both the beauty and harshness of the WA landscape — a strong inspiration for my mixed media artwork — that I would also love for other Australians to appreciate and respect.” 

Jayne is on her way to putting a piece of WA’s iconic bush into the hearts and homes of many Australians through her recent Cossack Art Award win for the Landscape Category in July this year. From humble beginnings, the Awards is now the richest acquisitive art award in regional Australia.

Jayne’s winning entry — Sacred Earth — captured the energy and essence of the Pilbara, depicting the islands offshore to the flat Mitchell Plains, the grasses, the white snappy gums and of course the red pindan dirt that is famous in the north of our State. 

“Winning the Cossack Art Awards against so many talented and experienced artists across Australia makes me so humble and proud,” commented Jayne. 

“I spend many hours in my studio, creating and growing my art so winning inspires me to keep creating, not only for me, but also for others to enjoy, appreciate and respect the land that we are born and living in.” 

Jayne’s dream of sharing a piece of WA’s landscape with everyone continues to be realised with her being selected — as one of three artists — to supply artwork for a large commercial, 4.5 star apartment accommodation project in Geraldton. 

In addition, Jayne’s recent art selection for the Cafe Collective WA’s Karrinyup Gallery is providing Perth art lovers  with an opportunity to have a piece of our stunning landscapes in their homes or offices. 

The busy pace brought upon by all of these opportunities has given Jayne comfort from the isolation she experiences as to where she lives, and importantly, the confidence to “sell” herself as an artist.

“Art marketing and running a professional art business can be a challenge. You are the CEO, accountant, creative director, marketing person etc so many hats to wear when you run your own business. Michelle Jane Williamson (Churchlands), Larissa Nguyen (Subiaco) and Joanne Duffy (Mt Claremont) are three out of 60 artists who have expanded the audience for their art via Art Upmarket — a first of its kind marketplace to connect WA painters, sculptors, photographers, and artisans with art buyers. 

Justine Barsley, Director of Perth Upmarket — commented that the artists, along with their peers, have been able to not only showcase their art to a broader audience but also use the unique marketplace of Art Upmarket as a means to give them commercial experience, invaluable networking and, importantly, self-confidence.

“The art sector, as we know, can sometimes be a challenging industry to succeed and make a living in,” explained Justine.

“Through Art Upmarket, we want to be able to provide for self-taught, professional and budding WA artists that pop up gallery experience – without the pressures of high costs and industry expectations – and also get their art in front of people who are looking to purchase something local, unique and affordable.” 

“In addition, there is the added bonus of meeting other artists who share their lessons learnt and stories towards making it as an artist in WA, which we have seen with our exhibitors, over time.” 

Michelle, of Michelle Jane Williamson Fine Art, is a realist oil painter specialising in wildlife and pet portraits. With a love for textures, composition and colour, Michelle’s works reflect and are inspired by the natural world around her. Michelle’s creations offer collectors an opportunity to take home a piece of nature, as a reminder of the beauty and intrigue that surrounds us. 

“The Art Upmarket has encouraged so much growth in my business over the years. The event has broadened my audience, enabled exposure in the community and pushed me as an artist to grow and improve rapidly over the years,” said Michelle. 

“In October, I will have a completely fresh array of original artworks, centering around Australian birdlife, available for viewing for the first time publicly at Art Upmarket.” 

Larissa Nguyen, of LNART.STUDIO, is a modern abstract artist who enjoys painting intuitively and is inspired by nature and the human response to life. Larissa’s work has been sought after by private art collectors and is featured in the Spring edition of Art Edit magazine.

“I only started making my art available for sale online last year and the Art Upmarket was the first major event where I showcased a number of my works in-person. The event was particularly helpful to me, as an emerging artist, to see how people responded to my work. The positive response and  new collectors who connected with my art was very encouraging and gave me confidence,” said Larissa. 

“At the upcoming Art Upmarket, I will be showing several new large original abstracts inspired by water, minimalist pieces with my signature gold leaf embellishment and launching a new range of limited edition prints.” 

Joanne of Joanne Duffy Art is passionate about depicting the Australian landscape in an Expressionist style, resulting in artworks that are reflective, full of vitality, intense colour and emotion. 

Joanne’s art has been or is currently available in galleries around Australia (including the Rochfort Gallery in North Sydney), in Perth Metro and throughout regional WA, and have won multiple awards over the last 15 years at the Wanneroo, Rockingham, Stirling and Claremont Awards – amongst many. 

“Through Art Upmarket, I have been able to gain new collectors and followers, allowing me to access a slightly different art market, including new collectors and first time collectors,” said Joanne. 

“For the October Art Upmarket, many of my works are derived from my painting ’en plein air’, a favourite pastime this year. My collection for the day will feature petite works at an affordable price along with a few statement pieces.”

“My husband’s job in the resources sector saw my family and I moving constantly, and along the way I lost my own identity and needed something just for myself,” Hayley explained. 

“I had a career in graphic design back in South Africa and when we moved around I was a stay-at-home mum, a relief education assistant and dance teacher in Tom Price before I injured my back and needed surgery.” 

That injury and surgery proved to be the turning point for Hayley, when her friend sent her a care package including acrylic paint and some canvases for something to do while she recovered. 

A week later Hayley sold her first painting and that success streak continued with her artwork recently featured for the Joondalup Community Art Exhibition campaign, chosen for a bespoke 2022 Collection for Bullet Planner and selected by Australia’s greeting card giant – John Sands – for their new “Our Australia” range. 

“I knew when I picked up that paintbrush that this is what I wanted to do long term. Being in WA inspired the style and subject of my acrylic paints – the strength and architectural form of the native plants here,” said Hayley.

“Importantly, being here in Ellenbrook, Perth has opened many opportunities for me as an artist – something that many people probably don’t associate with when living in the most remote city in the world. But you’ve just got to look and get involved.”

“There are many local arts awards programs, community engagement, amazing events such as Perth Upmarket and of course, the power of social media, that enables you to get your art out there.”

Indeed, Hayley’s first painting sold through her entry for the Pilbara Artists Come Together when living in Tom Price. By entering the 2020 Joondalup Community Art Exhibition, the City of Joondalup contacted Hayley to commission her artwork for Lakeside Joondalup Shopping Centre.

The opportunity to have two of her designs – Splendorous and Sun-Kissed – as part of John Sands’ new Our Australia range (twelve in total) came about through her Instagram account. 

Lastly, Hayley’s bespoke art collection for Bullet Planner – coming out in 2022 – resulted from meeting the parent of one of the children that she teaches at a weekly kids art class in the Ellenbrook community. 

“All of these amazing opportunities – commissioning, licensing, bespoke and direct selling of my artwork – has allowed me to be a full time artist, for the first time ever this year. I am thankful that a hard move almost 16 years ago into a supportive WA community and a city that offers pathways has made this possible,” said Hayley. 

Hayley plans to continue working on her art practice, ensuring it will accommodate for future growth in an ever evolving market. 

She will release and exhibit a new body of work and a diverse range of original paintings to suit a variety of sizes and budgets at the Perth Art Upmarket on Saturday 16 October at UWA.

“My mother was an artist, so growing up, oil paints, cake decorating, and china painting always surrounded me. From an early age at school, I remember enjoying the art classes, then later in high school, tech drawing, woodwork and metalwork, so I have always enjoyed working with my hands. My passion for woodwork culminated from a family friend who wanted a lampstand, so five lathes later, three workshops with Steven Hughes and Vic Wood opened my mind to the fact that lathe-turned objects could be a canvas for art. So I started to explore carving on turning every Sunday on my day off from the farm.

“Working the land, you see and experience everything about the power of nature, and I draw on environmental influences that affect me on the farm and now through my coastal lifestyle to create art that reminds people of the importance of looking after the land we live on and draw life from.”

Indeed, Neil’s unique message of the ageless trait of our throw-away cultures in the form of five amphorae (ceramic jars) was what captured the interest of the judges of the world-class public art event – Sculptures by the Sea.

Neil is one of 70 artists from 14 countries whose artwork has been chosen for exhibition at the 2022 Sculptures by the Sea, from 4 – 21 March at Cottesloe Beach, a perfect setting to share his environmental message.

“Throughout the ages, containers have been used to transport materials. In Ancient Greece, amphorae (ceramic jars) were cheap, plentiful and easily discarded – like the plastic bottles of today – littering the Ocean,” explained Neil.

“My Sculptures by the Sea installation comprises of five amphorae-like objects, cast in Jesmonite from a mould of my hand-turned wooden vessel, made to look like clay. Positioned to appear to have been washed up on the beach as a time-travelling reminder of the persistent human behaviour to pollute and endanger our oceans.”

“Through my Sculptures by the Sea art installation, I hope to provide a visual reminder of the impact of waste on our beautiful oceans and marine life, and motivate people to make a considered decision on what they do with their rubbish, to lessen our environmental footprint.”

Neil will continue to spread his message of seeing, appreciating and experiencing nature via his wooden sculpture exhibition at the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial October and installation of two pieces of public art at the new Koolinup Emergency Centre in Collie, both in October, and private commissions for collectors in the USA.

Those keen to view Neil’s latest artwork in the Perth metro region are encouraged to attend the Perth Art Upmarket on Saturday 16 October at UWA, which Neil has indicated might be inspired by his upcoming travel to the Goldfields region.

What started as hobbies and creative outlets in baby fashion, quirky gift cards and embroidered homewares for Claire Turner (South Perth), Belinda Werndly (Carlisle) and Emma Giblett are now going to be showcased at WA’s biggest design market on Sunday 19 September.

“Claire from enid., Belinda of Scary Bare Creations and Emma who is behind Carl and Co Handmade are part of the First at Upmarket feature — an incubator concept that helps newly established local artists get into the marketplace,” explained Justine Barlsley, Director of Perth Upmarket. 

“The concept has been developed to encourage and support new creative small businesses to test a ready Perth market in an effective way without the risk of high costs of a brick and mortar store or a delay in getting a brand in front of buyers.”

“Since we opened the opportunity in March this year, we received hundreds of applications for a spot of 20 for our quarterly event, which are then assessed against strict criteria such as being locally made or designed, business viability and product quality. So, a big congratulations to Claire, Belinda and Emma for being selected.” 

Claire Turner — designer and dressmaker at enid. — will be showcasing her handmade baby wear label which she started just this year as a way to express her creative side. Her handcrafted clothing is made out of cottons and linens, so that they stand the test of time when worn by little ones, offering a sustainable, fashionable option. 

 

“I am a creative person and I am happiest when I am creating. Through First at Upmarket, I hope to be able to give my business a platform to extend local word of mouth, test the market and also to meet, learn from other established exhibitors on how to grow my creative dream,” said Claire.

Belinda Werndly is a veterinarian by day and the business person behind Scary Bare Creations — a handmade gift card initiative — at other times. The small home-based business involves all her family members and started as a way to entertain her two kids, inspire their inner entrepreneur and teach them about money, while spending more family time together. 

 

“All of our gift cards have been created from scanned original artworks of our two children — Adira (10) and Eli (8) — with added puns and technical support by my husband and I. Creating this business venture has had so many positive outcomes for all of us as a family and First at Upmarket will help enhance that by creating more awareness for Scary Bare Creations to a bigger, ready market,” explained Belinda.

Carl and Co Handmade creator Emma Giblett might be thinking data from 9am–5pm as an analyst for a bank, but any other time she’s always thinking about what’s the next thing to make! What started with sewing clothing, gifts and homewares for friends and family has evolved into a creative outlet that Emma would like to grow via opportunities like Perth Upmarket. 

 

“Creativity is such a happy outlet for me and being able to make something fun, unique and useful such as a sensory block educational gift for a learning toddler, durable clothing for children or wall art that are not part of the factory line is so powerful,” said Emma.

Through director of Perth Upmarket Justine Barsleys own personal experience of being a puppy raiser for Guide Dogs WA, she gained an appreciation of the important role Guide Dogs play to provide safety, freedom and mobility for a person who is blind or vision impaired.

When Justine floated the idea to create a partnership with and collaboratively raise funds for Guide Dogs WA with Upmarket retailers as part of Perth Upmarkets ‘giving back to the community’ commitment, many quickly jumped on board to help.

Being a design market, Upmarket retailers approached fundraising for the community partnership with Guide Dogs WA in their own creative way. 

Designers donated their time and products to the partnership by designing and filling limited edition designer Goody and Doggy Tote bags, which sold out immediately upon their release at Upmarket.

Creative Upmarket bakers designed and made dog biscuits for sale at each quarterly Upmarket.

Whilst artists from their sister event Art Upmarket painted iconic Guide Dogs WA collection dogs for a “Pup Art” exhibition where shoppers voted for their favourites with gold coin donations and then the completed “Pup Art” dogs were auctioned off to raise more funds. 

Introducing Graham – the Perth Upmarket/Guide Dog WA Community Partnership Puppy

The $35,000 raised by Perth Upmarket has enabled sponsorship of a new Guide Dog puppy called Graham – named after Upmarket founder Justine’s late uncle, who dedicated his life to training dogs. 

Lauren Shepherd, Corporate and Community Partnerships Coordinator at Guide Dogs WA, congratulated Perth Upmarket, its retailers and supporters for their creative fundraising efforts.

“It takes two years and $50,000 to raise and train just one Guide or Assistance Dogs. Guide Dogs WA relies on the support of the community to help fund Guide Dogs’ training program,” said Lauren.

“We are grateful to Perth Upmarket and their supporters for this amazing partnership. Puppies like little Graham will one day change the life of a Western Australian and their family.”

The Upmarket extended family of staff, retailers and shoppers are excited to follow Graham on his journey to becoming a WA Guide Dog.

“Graham is one of the largest dogs in the program and his legs are still growing, just like his enthusiasm! He has a cheeky, playful nature and loves being around people. Graham’s a handsome boy and loves to pose for the camera, as shown in the photos attached. Unfortunately his friendly happy nature makes him quite excitable around strangers and other dogs. He does show signs of maturing which will hopefully relax him a little. Graham’s Puppy Raisers went above and beyond with his training, taking him for many group walks all over Perth each week. Graham recently said good-bye to his Puppy Raisers as he transitioned from the puppy program to early formal training and a new Formal Boarder. You’re making great progress Graham, well done!”

Chef Cedric Manile and his business partner, Laura Allieres, are turning well-known French patisserie recipes – croissants, Mille Feuilles and eclairs – on its head as they create Perth’s and possibly the world’s first 100% plant based pastries, through their bakery W.H.I.P (Whole Hearted Inspired Patisserie).

Inspiration for W.H.I.P came from Laura’s search for plant-based pastries when she developed a dairy intolerance. Transitioning to a plant-based diet was not easy for the French-borns, Osborne Park residents, especially as they missed their traditional French tarts, croissants and cakes.

“Food is an important aspect of French culture that Cedric and I grew up with. Not being able to eat my usual croissants and tarts was hard but then I realised, I have here with me a trained pastry chef with extensive experience in Michelin restaurants across France, London, Tuscany and Perth,” said Laura. 

“So of course, Cedric saw this as an opportunity to be creatively challenged and turn the much-loved, famous and traditional French patisserie into plant-based goodness.” 

Previously a Zagat London’s 30 under 30 nominee and a pastry chef at Perth’s top-tier restaurant Wildflower, Cedric turned his skills to turning French favourites to meet the increasing, modern demand for plant based foods.

“At first when Laura mentioned the idea to me, I thought, yes why not? I started experimenting at home just for us to enjoy but when we started bringing our plant based pastries to dinner parties and as gifts, we discovered that there’s an unmet and growing demand for vegan French sweets,” explained Cedric. 

“Part of our mission is to show that it is possible to offer dairy-free and egg-free pastries, while keeping the high quality, flavourful and creative elements that many love so much in French baked goods,” said Cedric. 

Since opening in January 2020, W.H.I.P has certainly addressed Perth’s modern tastes for plant based French patisserie, evident through sold-out products at local food and farmers markets. 

The beautiful pastries have also attracted the attention of some of the biggest and well-known Instagram food bloggers who are open to the creativity of W.H.I.P’s pastries. 

True to their love for Western Australia, Cedric and Laura have embraced native ingredients such as thyme, Geraldton wax, warrigal (native spinach) and macadamias in their changing with the seasons menu of French treats. 

“There is so much goodness that the Western Australian natural landscape provides to give us exciting, new flavours that you won’t get anywhere else around the world. From our suppliers to clients, we can feel that there is a passion, like the one we have, for handmade, quality plant based pastries,” said Laura. 

Laura and Cedric will debut new winter season French based treats at the Winter Perth Upmarket on Sunday 13 June, at UWA. Lovers of all things French patisserie, good food and local ingredients are invited to sample the limited, handmade pastries and treats from W.H.I.P.
