With 2012 nearing its end, and possibly the world as we know it as well, there is an increasing number of award shows for those who did the best over the past year. So, we decided to create a little overview of some of the most interesting awards and trophies that came out of our creative factory over the years.

WinDays Award

Microsoft WinDays is one of the most important ICT conferences in Croatia, held with the goal of introducing the attendees with the news from the world of technology and providing an insight into the Microsoft technology available in Croatia. The organizers give out awards for the best software solutions in several different categories, as well as a special award for a person from the Microsoft engineers’ community. For the 2012 Windays, we created the featured award made of acrylic plastic with a 3D label.

@neven Twitter Statue

This is definitely one of the more unusual awards we have ever created, mostly because it was made for a very specific awardee – the first Croatian Twitter user under the handle @neven. The award has the shape of the famous Twitter bird and it was commissioned by Ping Pong communications consultancy for one of their clients, emporia Telecom. It presents a kind of a recognition to @neven for a big step he made for the Croatian twittersphere. @neven did not hide how much of an honor it was for him to receive it.

The Award for the INdoor Creatives

We made the 2011 award for the INdoor creatives using the design of Mladen Bohnec. It is awarded as a part of the INdoor creativity competition for the best work in indoor media and beach media. The aim of the competition is giving recognition to the most creative solutions as the most crucial element in the quality promotion in the use of indoor media. In 2011, the award went to Bruketa&Žinić for the series of ads titled “For well-behaved dogs”.

JFF Award

The Jewish Film Festival Award was made of acrylics and the design featured above was used two years in a row. JFF is a movie and cultural manifestation encouraging multicultural dialogue and educating about the Jewish culture, the Holocaust and tolerance through film media. It was first organized in Croatia in 2007, and in its fifth year it grew to 8.000 visitors and participants.

The Judgement Day Medal

From the very beginning of the Judgement Day, the independent creative communications festival, we have been creating the Doomsday Medal, awarded to the best creatives in a number of different categories. It is a festival promoting authorship and creativity, putting authors in the spotlight. This includes designers, illustrators, copywriters, musicians, directors, actors, photographers, cameramen, animators and students.

The design featured above was used in 2011. The finishing was done in silver, apart for the medal in the “Associate of the Year” category which had a black finishing. That particular year it went to the creative director of BBDO Croatia, Siniša Waldinger, and this year’s winner will be known on 21 December. The design of the medal itself undergoes various changes each year and this year’s design will be featured in one of the upcoming posts. We hope you’ve prepared your survival kit for the day.

If we all live through the doomsday, it doesn’t hurt to think about the 2013 and the post-apocalyptic awards. If you’re organizing an award event, don’t leave the award itself for the last minute. When in need of some fresh ideas, get in touch with PES team here. Talk to you after the doomsday.

If you’re in the type of business that requires you to produce creative solutions on a daily basis (and most of us fall into that category to a smaller or larger degree), the worst thing that can happen to you is the loss of creative confidence and the creative block. Thankfully, the cure for this is within ourselves. In the latest edition of the Harvard Business Review, Tom Kelley and David Kelley, the creative engines running the famous design and innovation factory, IDEO, bring us their four tested vaccines against the creative block:

Fear of criticsm
Auto-censorship and shooting down potentially viable ideas often come from the fear that our colleagues of bosses will witness our failure – our business ego is at stake. As a result, the tried out, safe solutions end up being more attractive at times. Or, standing back while letting others take the risk. In other words, half of the battle is resisting the temptation of self judgement.

Listen to your intuition and take small but consistent steps in order to overcome your fear. Instead of letting your creative ideas pass through your mind straight to the idea waste, try to systemise them in some sort of notebook. While generating ideas, aim for 100 instead of 10 ideas. Leave the judgement part for later. Don’t be afraid of the unconventional and the seemingly impractical solutions. Thinking about the completely crazy concepts while postponing the judgement can be your path to the creative insight.

Fear of taking the first step
Every creative person knows the first step is the hardest. A blank slate staring at you and laughing. The only way out of this trap is to abandon planning and simply start doing. And the best way to do that is to turn a huge assignment into small pieces you can attack straight away. Actually, Lao Tzu solved this dilemma 2.500 years ago when he wrote about the journey of a 1000 miles starting with a single step in the Tao Te Ching. In the business world this means asking yourself what is the cheapest and the fastest way to achieve a certain progress towards the larger goal.

The alternative to that would be to set a somewhat unrealistic deadline to complete the task. The Parkinson’s law says the perceived complexity of a task increases in proportion to the time allotted to its completion. Set the alarm and decide how much time you’ll spend on your small step, you’ll be surprised with what you’ve achieved once it rings. .
Fear of the unknown
Creative thinking in business often comes down to developing empathy for the clients and understanding of their needs which can’t be done by sitting at your desk, no matter how comfortable and predictable it is. Instead of waiting for your boss, your clients, or your competition to tell you what to do, start searching for new insights, even without having an initial hypothesis. You could start some sort of an anthropological field research among the people whose problem you wish to solve, talk to them, observe them while engaging in the relevant activities. Ask for their feedback in the early stages of developing your idea.

Fear of losing control
Confidence isn’t just trusting the quality of your ideas, but also the ability to let go of the bad ideas and to accept the good ideas coming from others. Be brave and admit you don’t have all of the answers. Regardless of the quality of your particular group of people, more great ideas will always be outside, not inside of the group. If you’re facing a big creative challenge, gather the people who don’t have an immediate experience with the problem you’re trying to solve or get the most junior team member to lead the meeting. The point is letting go of control and seeking out new perspectives.

PES team will definitely keep working on developing these habits and we invite you to try it out as well and let us know how it goes. If you’re looking for creative input relating to promotional products, business gifts of POS material, get in touch with us here.

So, we’re back from Düsseldorf, where we attended one of the largest international trade shows for the promotional products industry, PSI Trade Show. And full of impressions and new experiences. Over 20.000 visitors from 75 countries and some 1.000 exhibitors from 30 countries, all spread across some 68.000 square meters. All in all, a pretty impressive platform gathering the manufacturers and the distributors of promotional products, as well as the advertising agencies, for the 51st time.

The idea of the event is to gather the best in the industry and present the latest trends and innovations. So, PES team, more specifically Ivica, Domagoj and Ivan, got ready and headed for Düsseldorf with the goal of making new contacts and strengthening our exports portfolio. But first, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the company’s founding by creating a new visual identity, the elements of which you can see on this website. The credits go to young designers Luka Reicher, Andrija Mudnić, Ivan Vukmanić, Marija Ružić,Marinko Murgić, Ruđer Novak-Mikulić.They are also responsible for the new PES brochure (you can download it here), as well as the design of the PSI trade show booth.

It’s hard to believe it’s already been 20 years, with so many interesting projects and so many challenges tackled. It was one crazy ride, and we encountered the last bump on the road in Düsseldorf of all places. Our German mission was jeopardized by a vicious theft which took place the night before the opening of the trade show. An unknown perpetrator dared to break into our storage and steal 3 boxes full of samples for display. Thankfully, we managed to ship another set of products from Croatia overnight, just in time. We choose to believe that the new visual identity is so good that even the thieves could not resist it.

We also created a special video to run at the booth, providing insight into our manufacturing capabilities. It was also used to start the PES YouTube channel – come over, subscribe, watch, comment…

All things considered, it was one exciting and challenging start of 2013. We’ll be back to PSI trade show next year, of course, but with increased security measures. In the meantime, we’re ready for the new challenges you set before us. If we can help you with your business goals, we’re here for you, so get in touch.

Imagine this scene: you come home after a hard day at work, turn on the printer and print yourself a nice dinner. Perhaps you think something like this is possible only if you’re Captain Picard and live aboard USS Enterprise, but this scenario actually doesn’t belong to far future. While you’re reading this, people all over the world are using 3D printing technology to create medical implants, jewelry, shoes, automobile parts, some types of food and even replicas of fetuses inside the womb, in a cheap and fast way. It’s a technology perfect for manufacturing small batches of custom-made final products. Sci-Fi becomes reality

Engineers and designers have been using 3D printing for the past two decades, mostly for cheap and fast production of prototypes and molds. As 3D printers develop and enable the production with a wider spectrum of materials, including metal and plastic, their use in creating final products is increasing, with lower manufacturing costs, lower risks and expanded possibilities for custom manufacturing. Little further in the future, we might be downloading various types of products over the Internet and printing them in the comfort of our own home.

Print me a bar of chocolate!

3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process in which a 3D solid object is made based on a 3D visualization. The product is created using successive layering of the chosen material. Along with 3D printers using solid materials, there are those who can use semi-liquid ones like cheese or chocolate. Although there are already desktop models on the market, most 3D printers still take up a lot of space, so you can’t actually place them on the kitchen counter and print your own chocolate.

3D print replica of your’s truly

Vaša 3D mini replika

The areas of application for 3D printing are virtually limitless. Smithsonian museum, for example, started creating a collection of 3D replicas based on the scans of long lost or overly sensitive original pieces. It is expected that the first photo booth which will print 3D mini replicas of the users will soon open in Japan. One tech company created a 3D mini chocolate replica of the human brain, using an MRI scan to create the mold.

Meanwhile in PES creative factory

3D print replika pumpe Wilo

In PES, we apply the 3D printing technology to create mini replicas, such as the 3D mini replica of a pump created for the German manufacturer of pumps and pumping systems Wilo, The replica was created in plastic, it is 15 cm in height and it was subsequently painted in green color. As you can imagine, with a technology this diverse, there are very few limitations. If you want to learn more about 3D printing and find out how you can use this technology in your own business, PES team is here for you. We expanded our horizons and showed what we can do.

Over 320 exhibitors presented the latest accomplishments in the fields of outdoor advertising, digital signage, POS displays, packaging, ambiental media, screen printing, flexographic print and many more. This year’s VISCOM included seven special areas or themes: Display PoS Expo, Digital Signage World, Designmaker, European Wrap Star, Web-to-Print, Viscom World of Inspiration and Eco Future

Display PoS Expo
For the first time at VISCOM, Display POS Expo was presented as a “fair within the fair”, and its target audience included marketing experts from the agency sector, retail, industry, branding, visual merchandising, store design and display design. We got familiar with the latest trends and top equipment for POS advertising, discovered new methods of influencing the purchase decisions at the point of sale and the most effective ways of presenting a brand.

World of Inspiration
This section of VISCOM provided a platform for exchange of ideas, knowledge and professional practice in the field of visual communications, through on-site presentations. One of the most interesting features of VISCOM and the World of Inspirations was the so-called “Supermarket of the future”, a pioneer project created with the purpose of presenting the latest trends in store design. The entire trade fair was completely focused on the visitors, through various practical presentations. Through various sections within the supermarket, the visitors got the see options for designing store shelves and displays which are guaranteed to get the customers’ attention.

Superstar 2012
The award for the best POS and display solutions Superstar 2012 was awarded within the Display POS Expo by the German publisher of ‘Display’ magazine in the following categories: “Long-term”, “Short-term”, “International”, “Digital Signage” and “Consumer Packaging”. An independent panel consisting of six members evaluates the entries based on five criteria: design, functionality, communication, technical execution and innovativity. This year Superstar was awarded for the 19th time and we at PES threw our hat in the ring for the first time in the form of a price list holder designed and made for Karlovačka pivovara brewery.
