Why do puppies need different dog food?

During the first six to eight weeks of a puppies life it should stay with its mother and be allowed to nurse from her as it wants to. Royal Canin was established by French veterinary surgeon Jean Cathary in 1967 from his veterinary practice in the Gard region of France.

Convinced that many of the health problems he saw in the pets he treated (especially skin and coat conditions) were caused by poor diet, Jean Cathary devised a cereal–based recipe, which he prepared in an oven in his garage.

The food he developed was so successful at alleviating the problems the pets he was treating were experiencing he closed his veterinary practice to concentrate on manufacturing and distributing Royal Canin pet food.

He imported an extruder, a new type of food processer at that time, from the U.S., and became the first manufacturer of dry pet food in France and the first European pet food company to use an extruder.

Royal Canin’s primary market at that time was breeders (particularly of German Shepherds). The Royal Canin brand was also one of the first pet food brands to utilise TV advertising to promote pet food products. Production steadily increased and in 1970, the company was incorporated as “Royal Canin S. A.”.

A larger factory was opened in Aimargues, France (which is still home to the Royal Canin headquarters) and distribution throughout Europe began. Forty staff were employed in the annual production of five–thousand five hundred tons of feed.

In 1972 Cathary sold the company to Guyomarc’h, a much larger, family run, animal feed business (founded by Jean Guyomarc’h in 1954) which specialised in livestock feed.

Under the ownership of Guyomarc’h Royal Canin continued to grow and a dedicated research centre was opened in Saint-Nolff, Brittany, during 1973.

In 1990 Paribas Bank purchased Guyomarc’h Group and in 1994 separated Royal Canin from the other businesses in turn floating it on the French stock exchange. Funds raised from the flotation were used to buy Crown Pet Foods in 1999 and the James Wellbeloved pet food brand in 2000.

In 2001 Royal Canin was bought by Mars and removed from the stock exchange.
