Review: Lay Back by This Window – A Journey in Shadows and Light

The video for Lay Back unfolds like a short, self-contained noir film set within the opulent, time-suspended dining car of the Orient Express.

In striking counterpoint to the film noir narrative it fractures into moments of warmth: a woman, smiling and happy. These scenes arrive like sunlight breaking through a stormed sky, their emotional clarity heightened by the claustrophobic gloom that surrounds them. Her perspective feels like the true voice of the song — the lyrics, when paired with her gaze, take on a tone of reflection, perhaps even quiet defiance. By the end of this three minute video, the viewer is left with the impression that the song’s emotional truth belongs to her, not him.

Visually, the piece thrives on texture: the grainy 8mm home movie feel, the muted glow of the table lamp, the rhythmic sway of the train, which feels like it is following the beat. It’s a world where every surface seems to hold a memory, and every glance could be a clue. The noir influence is unmistakable, but it’s the interplay between shadow and light — suspicion and tenderness — that gives Lay Back its lingering power.

The track doesn’t just reference Leonard Cohen’s Favourite Games and Beautiful Losers — it seems to inhabit their rooms, borrowing the scent of their cigarette smoke and the weight of their silences.

The vocal delivery is intimate yet detached, a voice speaking from the edge of a bed at 3 a.m., where desire and disillusionment lie tangled in the same sheets. The instrumentation is sparse but deliberate — synth tones and low, percussive murmurs that feel like the hum of a radiator in winter, or the faint static of a radio tuned just off-station.

Where Favourite Games toys with the erotic as a form of self-discovery, and Beautiful Losers drapes its characters in the sacred and profane, “Lay Back” channels that same duality. There’s a sense of bodies as landscapes — not romanticised, but mapped with scars, pauses, and the occasional flash of tenderness. The lyrics (or their implied imagery) seem to move between the tactile and the symbolic: a hand brushing over skin becomes a metaphor for the way memory brushes over time, never quite touching the same place twice.

The song’s pacing mirrors Cohen’s prose rhythms — languid, elliptical, and unafraid of stillness. It resists the modern urge to fill every space, letting the listener linger in the gaps, where the real intimacy happens.

By the time the track fades, it leaves you with the same aftertaste as Cohen’s novels: a mingling of beauty and ruin, of longing that doesn’t seek resolution. “Lay Back” isn’t just a song — it’s a room you step into, dimly lit, where the air is thick with the ghosts of lovers and the quiet ache of things left unsaid.

‘This is War’ another sample from our 2026 release, which is due out in February, if everything goes to plan.

Love as War: A Battlefield of Emotion

“Love, in its most intense form, can feel like a warzone—where vulnerability becomes armour and every word fired carries the weight of longing or betrayal. This Is War by This Window captures this emotional combat with haunting precision. The track pulses with tension, echoing the internal conflict of hearts caught between desire and defence.”

When love feels like war, the silence between battles can be the loudest cry.

“In relationships, we often fight not against each other, but for understanding, for closeness, for survival of the bond. The song’s raw energy and lyrical defiance reflect how love can demand strategy, endurance, and sometimes surrender. It’s not always about winning—it’s about what remains after the dust settles.”

The History of This Window – This Window (UK) was formed by Peter Bright around 1985; earlier tape experiments exist from 1979 to 1984. These tape experiments formed the basic philosophy of This Window. The analogue tape machine became the main instrument used to create ‘songs’. This interest in experimentation had been nurtured whilst being a member of the Exeter College of Art and Design bands, T.34 (1978 – 1980) and The Urge (1979). The Urge supported Adam and the Ants and Bauhaus and were offered a record contract with 4AD but decided to split up and consequently didn’t sign. In A Glass Darkly (1981) was a project with the lead singer from The Urge, Russell Young and two ballet dancers who performed to a tape backing track of a dripping tap, only a handful of gigs were played in London. This project ended and Peter later joined Finish The Story (1981 -1986) as guitarist. Read more…

In 1982, the Squier brand was reactivated by Fender to become its brand for lower priced versions of Fender guitars. Squier guitars have been manufactured in Japan, Korea, Mexico, India, Indonesia, China, and the United States. In the late 1970s and early 1980s Fender was facing competition from lower priced Japanese made guitars. The higher priced Fender guitars were made in the United States and could not compete with the lower prices of Japanese made Fender copies. In the early 1980s, Japanese labour and production costs were much lower than in America and to compete with the Japanese made guitars, Fender moved the lower priced Fender guitar production from America to Japan.

Fender was also losing sales in Japan to Japanese guitar brands such as T?kai, Greco and Fernandes and the establishment of Fender Japan would benefit Fender sales in Japan, as well as overseas. Fender began negotiations with several Japanese musical instrument distributors and reached an agreement with Yamano Gakki and Kanda Shokai to establish Fender Japan.

It is Good Friday and a time to doubt

It is ingrained into our psyche from an early age that failure is a bad thing. From birth to death we are compared, or we compare ourselves, with people that have failed or succeeded. To be successful is to appear to our peers as socially, financially and intellectually superior. To fail is the complete opposite, to be ostracized by this successful society. Our preoccupation with success and its consequent obsession creates within us a crisis of identity. ‘Am I successful?’ ‘Do I appear to be successful?’ ‘Do my friends think I’m successful?’ Is it all just a facade, we have been taken in by what we see and what we are being told.

How arrogant are The Arts Council

How dare the British government and The Arts Council waste my money on propping up outdated institutions. Theatres, galleries, community projects. How dare they tell the tax payer what is ‘good for them’ and then deliver shit.

What is this middle class obsession with Art being good for society?

The frontiers of creativity are in creating video games, smarter bombs and creating more audio and visual ways of distracting us from the reality of the real world.

I want the money wasted on Arts Council Grants to be spent on the NHS, Netflix and a stronger more powerful and destructive armed forces and weaponry.

Art is dead – close Art Colleges

The constant questioning and declassification of what art is and what the content is has lead to this so called crisis in painting and art (there as always been a crisis in painting) – Painting is dead – the exponents of Conceptual Art tried to destroy the art object but failed – thought and the idea is the object. The primary aims of Conceptual Art in the 1960’s was to carry out a theoretical examination of ‘art’ and through understanding propose ‘concepts as art’. Two and three-dimensional art was in the doldrums, the essence of creating was the new Holy Grail. This was considered to be a bold step – proposing an idea as a work of art left the Artist with very little to exhibit or sell, the written word was usually all that was physically evident.

It has taken me nearly 35 years to realize that what I do isn’t pointless and that my unwavering trust in the conceptual philosophies (of artists and writers from Duchamp to Art and Language) has been misplaced. I’m enjoying my painting – for the first time. The ‘world of art’ and the ‘world of everyday life’ had already been discussed in Dada. “Life and art are one,” proclaimed Tzara. Ultimately Dada reduced itself to vandalism, drawing mustaches on the Mona Lisa, instead of destroying the Louvre and genuinely starting again, something a real revolutionary movement would consider as its first option. It increased the status of the most banal object or event into something that ultimately provoked nervous laughter, a childish prank that has been taken seriously ever since. Conceptual Art attempted to be more serious in its approach. Unfortunately the original aims became diffused and the quality of thought became diluted and suffered a similar fate to Dada.
