You can all stop dreaming, ordering a pizza straight from your mobile (without calling obviously) is reality now. Pizza Hut released a pretty impressive iPhone app. Which is comprehesively demonstrated in the clip below. First thing to notice is the playful manner in which you create the order, shaking your phone to toss your salad en tiliting to pour your favourite sauce on your chicken wings. Although it kinda slows down the ordering process it is a lot of fun, and let’s be real, ordering by phone is quicker anyway…

A while ago iPhone developer Steve Sprang released Brushes, at first sight it’s an iPhone app like many others. In Brushes you can doodle, simple as that. But the highly advanced interface and possibilities of the app take doodling a giant step further. Brushes even has its own Flickr Group with the best of the best pictures made with the iPhone app.

I don’t want to be the sales guy that commercializes everything straight away, but this could be a fun part of a mobile marketing campaign. Imagine downloading a coloring from a mobile site or app, opening it in Brushes, giving it your best shot and then participate in a coloring competition. Great fun for geeks and children!

The Portuguese illustrator Jorge Colombo even used Brushes to create the cover of the June 2009 edition of The New Yorker. See the clip below to see how he did this.

I have been inspired to write this article by two very recent market developments in The Netherlands. The first one is that recently the Dutch social network Hyves announced the opening of their own online app store where they will offer both online and mobile apps. The app store will be supported by a payment system, so Hyves can sell paid applications as well. In many respects, they follow the great success Apple had with their iPhone App Store. And I can’t see why they would fail.

The second one is that Nu.nl, the biggest Dutch news website, unofficially (at a conference) announced the launch of their own mobile app store in their very succesful iPhone app (around 80% of Dutch iPhone users has got Nu.nl installed). It will operate as a store but in fact it will suggest iPhone apps from the App Store. The added value lies in the selection Nu.nl makes for its users. Nu.nl will obviously receive an affiliate fee on the apps being bought by users redirected from their store.

It’s easy to digest from these two developments, that the app store model is now both copied in an online model and in a mobile affiliate model. In fact, you could see Nu.nl as an Apple App Store ‘user’ that starts to suggest applications to its loyal visitors. Nu.nl knows its customers a lot better than Apple knows the App Store customers so can offer its customers a tailored offering based on this knowledge. Now it’s also easy to copy this to the situation Hyves is creating. Hyves’ users can suggest their favourite online and mobile apps to their friends. But why would everyone all the sudden start recommending apps to each other? Because Hyves will pay out an affiliate fee for every app sold through your profile page!

I firmly believe this model is a very interesting business model for both mobile media and social media. If you look at the strong growth of the mobile app market, you can already spot the need for some sort of filter. In just one year’s time the Apple App Store has become very hard to oversee, about six months ago it was still reasonably easy to choose what apps you wanted but now it’s just too much. If popular and highly used apps such as Nu.nl start suggesting apps I might like, this would be of great help. And I can’t see why popular apps such as Spotify or LinkedIn wouldn’t start suggesting apps based on its user’s data and preferences. The smart thing is that these aren’t just filters, they’re revenue streams because of the generated affiliate fees.

When it comes to Facebook, MySpace, maybe even Twitter, you could do the exact same thing. You could start suggesting certain applications to your friends in a controlled and not too intrusive way so people can slowly get used to the idea of affiliate marketing on social networks. I don’t think things will get out of hand soon, the social element of social networks will prevent people from overloading their profile with all sorts of applications. Just like in a shop, people will make sure their profile looks nice, tidy, tailored to its audience and not too obtrusive. That’s all, want more like this?

On June 30th I presented at the Next Night, organised by Generation Next. The central theme of the night was ‘Mobile is dead’. Hence the first slide of my presentation. My view on that is that the mobile phone as an information carrier is nearly dead. Even not so tech savvy people sync their contacts and pictures to either their pc or to the internet. By complete coincedence my phone broke this weekend and it had to be sent back to Nokia, and I can’t say I’m in trouble. I still got all my contacts, only a slightly less comfortable mobile browser.

So my presentation is about the future of mobile and how mobile became ‘big’. What happened before and how does this influence all the stuff that is going to happen? You’ll find the answers in my presentation below.

Last week I discovered that programming isn’t that difficult. I never went further with code than copy/pasting it, but it’s easy to do more without having to read a boring DIY programming book. The only motivation I needed was an e-mail from Ernst-Jan, who always helps me out when it comes to code. He was too busy this time and told me to give it a try myself and ask him for help when I ran into problems. I never had to e-mail him.

Truth is that if you take a free Wordpress theme as a start (I used Viewport) and edit it a bit, you’re already halfway. Installing plugins is the easiest thing in the world and editing your code is easy in the admin panel of your blog. In the end I only needed the following tools:

- Adobe Photoshop CS3 for buttons and backgrounds
- FireFTP to login to my FTP server
- FireBug to get some bugs out

Well, you can see what I made from it. Hope you like it, and please let me know if you think I should change some things.

Ok, I admit, this is not very recent news, but I recently discovered the Grazia application and couldn’t curb my enthousiasm. Grazia succesfully collaborated with the biggest shopping mall in Europe to create an iPhone application. But that’s not what I want to talk about. I want to talk about the business model behind these sort of applications.

The Grazia application is technically just a guide to get around in a shopping mall, but the fact that it’s whitelabelled by a fashion magazine gives it a lot more appeal and makes it a one-to-have for all the fashionistas reading Grazia. This is how I envisage the future of mobile applications, great applications that in itself don’t make money, monetized through whitelabelling to brands that use the application to promote their brand in a new, innovative kind of way. The brands give the applications a ‘face’ that appeals to their customers. These brands engage with their customers. They do ’something nice’ for them. Something useful and meaningful. Like Grazia did for their fashionista readers.

Brands that advertise by giving their customers something useful is actually completely opposed to the era we have lived in for approximately the last fifty years. The era of shouting. Over the last couple decennia brands have found all sorts of different ways to shout at their customers: billboards, tv commercials, radio commercials (the ones I hate the most), print ads and much more. But with mobile applications brands finally have a choice to do something else. By releasing a mobile application they can create something of value for their customers against a reasonably good price. It’s the ultimate way for brands to utilize the mobile medium. That’s all, want more like this?

And apparently I wasn’t the only one thinking about this. Look at this conceptual clip below to see how all our lives will change when it comes to the supermarket and everything related.

And how refreshing is it that this little clip was originally found on the digital design blog by Razorfish, a media buying agency. We all know what it means when the media buyers get it. It means that advertisers almost get it.

These days, most brands still haven’t even touched mobile, but there are always those brands who do keep up with the latest developments in media usage and take every chance to communicate with their target audience in new and innovative ways. Many of them have launched a mobile marketing campaign or created a mobile website, but very very few of them have done what I would consider the best thing: getting on people’s phone. There aren’t many more engaging things a brand can do to establish a relation with its customers than releasing a (good) mobile application. And making beautiful and helpful applications is just what Apple has made much easier with the iPhone (Google is doing a great job with Android too, but their Android Market is far from mature and reach through Android-enabled handsets is still too low).

Although it may sound easy, releasing a mobile application isn’t anything like putting a banner on a popular site. The marketing department has to realise that the application has to be downloaded and used by people to make it truly succesful. So how do you do that? Well, you have to think of the different needs people have while using their mobile phone as opposed to surfing online on their PC. People use their mobile for two reasons (besides calls and texts).

They are looking for a quick and practical solution, so they don’t have to turn to their PC when it’s not around, turned off or simply ‘all the way in the study room’.

They are looking for a boredom killer to get them through moments of waiting or commuting when there’s no PC around.

Below I’ve listed a top five of brands who have done a great job and definitely raised the bar in consumer interaction.

5. Audi
To promote their new an redesigned A4, Audi released Audi A4 Driving Challenge, a mobile gimmick that gives potential buyers a chance to get behind the wheel of the A4. Done racing? The iPhone app gives users the option to go online to book a real test drive or download a brochure.

.

4. Coca Cola
Coca Cola has always been on the forefront when it comes to new media developments, and they proved this again by developing two iPhone applications. The Spin the Coke and Magic Bottle apps aren’t the most useful ones but definitely provide their target audience with some entertainment while playing Truth or Dare or having relationship issues.

3. Paramount
To give both the cinema and DVD release of their picture Iron Man an extra push, Paramount released an Iron Man iPhone game to invite users to get in the famous iron suit of weapon scientist Tony Stark and start shooting some airplanes. In most cases these sort of games aren’t a joy to watch or play, but Paramount made an effort and the Iron Man game actually looks great and is very addictive, which makes the fact that you have to pay a small fee to download the game a lot easier to digest.

2. Carling
A lot has been said and written about Carling’s infamous iPint application. If you have an iPhone you have probably downloaded it and if you don’t own an iPhone one of your mates has defintely shown you how he was drinking his digital pint. The amount of positive publicity Carling received with this app has been enormous. It’s probably the best decision of their marketing department since sponsoring the Carling Cup.

1. Nike
The absolute number one in this top five is the marketing department of Nike. They have developed two apps which are both very useful and entertaining. Nike Women released Nike Training Club, an application with preloaded clips of all sorts of aerobic training exercises that can be ticked off on a daily basis, which generates a nice overview of how well you’re training. The other one is Nike Goal, a release by Nike Italy. This app gives an overview of the latest news and football scores from the Serie A, and whenever someone scores with a Nike boot (they obviously have this data), there’s a link displayed next to the goal and the player’s picture, which sends the user to a commercial of the particular shoe. And the commercials are beatiful and entertaining as we are used to. If (or when?) Nike integrates all the big football leagues they would have instant global success. Hats off to Nike.

.
