I will be one of the featured composers at “L’Espace du Son 2019” in Brussels in December along with Francis Dhomont, Francois Bayle, Hans Tutschku, Daniel Blinkhorn, Denis Dufour and Ingrid Drese.

I will also be delivering a masterclass and serving on the jury of the Concours de Spatialisation.

Research trip to Argentina and Uruguay – Sep 2018

From Monday 10th to Sat 15th Sep I will be in South America.

On Tue 11th I will give a talk to composition students at the Escuela Universitaria de Música, part of the Universidad de la República Uruguay as well as attending research meetings with staff and research students there.

On Friday 14th I will be giving a paper (Listening to Place; Music, Sound, Heritage, Memory) at the Mundos Sonoros Conference at Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero in Buenos Aires.

I will also be rehearsing with Eliseo Tapía on Pichuco, the piece for bandoneón and fixed media I composed in Visby, Sweden earlier this year.

Launch of Hilton Soundscape – August 2018

Sunday August 12th 2018 sees the launch of my latest sound art project – the Hilton Soundscape.

In August 2003, the School of Education at the University of Aberdeen moved from its Hilton campus in Aberdeen to the refurbished MacRobert Building in King’s College, Aberdeen. Shortly before the move, I emailed members of staff to ask if there were any sounds (loved and not so loved), that they would like me to preserve through recording before the buildings on the campus were pulled down.

I wanted to create what R. Murray Schafer calls a “sound romance” – any past or disappearing sound remembered nostalgically, particularly when idealised or otherwise given special importance. Many such sounds were often regarded as unimportant when actually current; yet later, hearing them may trigger strong memories.

Clicking on the pins on the map allows you to listen to the sounds and re-imagine, through memory, the locations they belonged to 15 years ago. You are encouraged to make a comment about the sound, reflecting on memories that it might evoke, developing sound conversations.

BEAST residency – August 2018

From 15 to 24 August 2018 I will be working on a new commission from BEAST (Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theatre) at the studios of the University of Birmingham. The piece will be composed for the BEASTdome, a 30+ channel sound system semi-permanently installed in the Bramall Building’s Dome Rehearsal Room at the University and will be premiered as part of BEAST FEaST 2019.

Composer in Residence during April 2018 in Visby, Sweden

I will be Composer in Residence at VICC (Visby International Composers’ Centre) in Visby on the island of Gotland in Sweden, for the whole of April. During this time, I will be completing Pichuco for bandoneon and fixed media, for Eliseo Tapia and a possible premiere in Buenos Aires in September. AS well as this, I hope to complete another piece for the Aberdeen Bestiary series to go along with Of the Swan and Of the Bat (as well as my colleague Suk-Jun Kim’s Of the Wolf, Of the Owl and Of the Caladrius.

Whilst here, I’ll also be giving a seminar on my music to students at the Gotland School of Music Composition.

Radio 3’s Hear and Now programme on Sat Dec 23rd (10pm) will feature acousmatic music from invisiblEARts, including my piece ABZ/A. The broadcast is dedicated entirely to the music from sound festival 2017 and will feature an interview with me and Fiona Robertson, festival director.
