If you love baking and want to try your hand at making your own diabetic dog treats this recipe received rave reviews from both dog and cat owners across the web.

Chef: Barb Maxwell

Ingredients:

1/2 cup whole wheat flour
2 eggs
1  1/2 pounds beef liver, cut into pieces

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a 10×15 inch jellyroll pan with parchment paper.
Place the liver into a food processor. Pulse until finely chopped. If you have room, add the flour and eggs, and process until smooth. Otherwise, transfer to a bowl, and stir in the flour and eggs using a wooden spoon. Spread evenly in the prepared pan.
Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the center is firm. Cool, and cut into squares using a pizza cutter. The treats will have a consistency similar to a sponge. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

Reviewers said that their dogs loved these treats and they used them as a reward after giving them their insulin shots. One reviewer recommended substituting 2 jars of meat baby food for the beef liver as an alternative, especially if the smell of liver turns you off.

If you are looking for a gluten free version of these treats you can substitue whole grain brown rice flour for the whole wheat flour for a gluten free version.

Tips: Use a pizza cutter to cut them into small pieces and store what you will use soon in the refrigerator and freeze the rest. Add 1tsp garlic powder to add more flavor.

Teddy the Kitten & Boots

About six weeks ago we adopted another kitten from the Rogue Valley Humane Society named Teddy. He is the cutest, sweetest little kitten that purrs all the time and is a joy.

Well, as a result one of our female cats named Boots turned into a complete monster around him and us. Boots is normally the sweetest most gentle cat and runs to greet us and rub up on our legs when we get home. Once we had Teddy all that changed and she was always tense, anxious and would swat at us and growl at him and us. When I would pick her up sometimes she would swat at me and act eratic. The complete opposite from the way she was.

I was looking through one of my pet magazines and noticed an ad for Comfort Zone for Cats made by Feliway. Its a diffuser that you plug into the wall and it emits pheremones that mimic the ones mommy cats produce while nursing their kittens. It is supposed to help reduce cat anxiety and make them feel calm again and thought it would be worth a try.

After plugging in the diffuser in our bedroom where Boots spends most of her day I noticed a big difference in her behavior. She seemed more relaxed and calm and when I walked by she wanted me to pet her belly and purred. A huge change from the nervous wreck she usually is. She still wants to swat the kitten but she actually seems to be tolerating him better. He loves to stalk her every move and now instead of freaking out she ignores him unless he gets too close then she bops him on the head. Her growling has decreased and she doesn’t swat and growl at us anymore so that is relief in itself.

The Pug checks are especially cute.  They have three different versions of Pug checks and each has an option for matching address labels too.

My favorite is called Sleepy Pugs. There are four pictures of pugs napping, lounging and yawning that are adorable.  The pug on the main picture sleeping makes me just want to reach out and hug it.
